Hi i'm a freelancing graphic designer/ web designer / anything creative....
I goto coffee shops alot and I always use Mobile AP.... works like a treat on my Vibrant w/ Froyo Rom (Axura)...and that got me wondering....
is it possible to have a landing page for my Mobile AP....basically i was hoping to make a webpage with advertisement about my "graphic design services"....
and add a button labeled "Connect".... this way the people with unlimited data plan... can offer internet to the "less fortunate" ....
and if people are interested... how about implementing paypal

your bandwith would skyrocket if lots of people in a coffee shop used your mobile ap and tmobile would throttle you before you can say "what the hell just happened?"

unlimited plans are never really unlimited when it comes to 3g

Thanks for the post OP. I had totally forgotten about Mobile AP. I had been using Barnacle to tether wirelessly. GREAT thing about Mobile AP is that my PS3 finds it and I've been connected all evening!
As far as the above quote, it will only allow up to 5 devices to be connected and also, I put a passcode on my wifi so anyone attempting to pick up my signal will have to know my passcode.
The Icon to put on one of my screens as a shortcut really helps a lot.
Thanks again!

...and the landing page changes to T-Mobile tethering notification page.
And your unlimited data plan with T-mobile is up to 5gb before they throttle you to the point where some have reported pages timing out because it's so slow.
Nice thought though.
I understand that i could be throttled down ..... I'm sure you can limit the number of devices that could be connected..... and maybe if i can restrict it to "Browsing only" .....
but my question is.....is this possible?
heres the basic outline of what i think should be featured on the app:
*landing page customizable
*option for password
*option to restrict to only browsing or only email?
*option to restrict the amount of devices that can be connected simultaneously
*integration w/ paypal ...so android owners can setup their account so they can charge for the internet service they're providing...
*referrals make commission
ofcourse this will be a project... but i'm sure we can all benefit from something like this..
Still a Great Idea
Just Googled for this idea. I agree it would be awesome. I have a little home-grown business, and when the wifi goes down at school, I'd love to use my unlimited plan on my phone to allow the class to connect to my wifi AND have then be forced to the homepage of my business first.
Still nothing? I'd love this.
no idea any one

I have a USA AT&T GT, and have installed the WPA_supplicant, which allows the GT to serve as an adhoc network to allow some sharing of internet capabilities. But this application (grand as it is) lacks choice of encryption (WPA, WEP, WPA2), and does not provide an infastructure network (instead it provides ad-hoc). Lack of infrastructure network raises policy issues and prevents some devices from being able to connect.
I saw a USA Verizon GT that had a slick pre-installed application that allowed personal hotspot capabilities including infrastructure and those encryption methods. Is there a way for me to obtain the APK for that tool? I've looked all over the ROM and Applications sections of this forum, searched Google and the marketplace, and cannot find anything similar. Am I the only person interested in such a thing?

Thank you, b0ricuaguerrero, but that is what I have (and that's where I got it). What I'm looking for has capabilities not included in the googlecode version, including infrastructure mode network and other encryption methods.
i can do that with my euro tab

oh yea forgot about mobile ap. that should do the job
Thanks! That is an improvement since it has infra network, my primary need. This will serve very well, though it still lacks the alternate encryption mechanisms.
I really appreciate the hint!
Need an apk that signs my update.zip files from titanium blackup.
I don't understand why it hasn't been done. The code to do it is already in java! Search the forums for testsign.jar
I know everything you need to do to get it done but I don't have a development environment at my disposal. Help me out and I'll show you how to convert your jarred up code libraries to run on android!
Please and Thank You.

New application proposal: ZeroNetAccess (ZeNA?)
Concept: an app that can block other apps network access.
Market alternative: DroidWall (root only, low market potential)
Methods: Maybe by modifying the apk manifest and resigning? Im not sure if there is a framework you could subclass for this.
Why: i turned off stats reporting for an app and i saw it writing reports to the web from logcat. Google took our rights away by not letting us do this from the application settings. Its my device and i have to pay the bill not google or the rude ppl who made the app. I will never understand why we were not given the right to administer mobile data access rights.
Potential: highly lucrative. People want to save money nowadays. In that respect voiding phone warranty for root access may not sit well with potential customer.

For rooted devices try DroidWall
Application Proposal: Web Page to PDF/HTML Safari Plug-In
Concept: Seriously?
Why: Cant save pages from the browser I safari always reloads the page when you come back to it from other activities (pointless nethog!) whats the friggin cache for anyway? It is better to save an article copy that you could view on the computer later or add to your info library if you write books or do any kinda technical research than it is to save a bookmark that may become 404 not found. Researchers nightmare!
Methods: execute shell command wget on page source. Use regular expression to get media list. Build directory tree. For each media call wget. Done.
Potential: medium. Not many people are so technically inclined.
Usefulness: extremely high, especially with zip/+email caps.. Roundabout source code viewer for nosy/curious folks.
Average potential, stream lehigh usefulness I would sell for a buck 99. Free (1 ad per saved page, no zip email)

Application proposal: WarBastard
Concept: wardriving app featuring google my maps! Maps are shared globally by locale. Signals can be pinpointed by triangulation through cross reference of mac address, signal strength and previously detected locations in a global locale based database. While we are at, throw in a google navigation intent, and a compass with distance to closest accesible AP! Dont stop there! I wonder where that cell tower is located?
Purpose: to aid weary travellers and cheap bastards to connect with their loved ones and services over open networks. Services could also be used for cellular network signal diagnostics across hundreds of thousands of devices.
Potential: astronomical I would pay 5 bux. Better yet 12 bucks per year. Free (1 ad per download of database, 1 ad per connect to AP. Possibly integrated with APs for increased revenue potential across the board.) The map data can also be used to find good places to set up an advertising AP 4 even more potential earnings.
Anybody wanna pay me to sit around and do this all day? Lol.
SERIOUSLY you are looking at my qualifications. Asking 50k p. yr. to start Project Mgr./Analyst/Sr. Developer. consulting options available. Willing to relocate. Pm for inquiries/proposals.

You are correct. I should never have assumed that this wasn't already in the market. Actually I didn't really plan to use this to sign titanium backups. For my purpose however the concept is the same.

New application proposal: Launchpad Homescreen Widget
Concept: a widget that will pop up an on screen menu (complete with icons) onClick similar to pc desktop start menus. Customizable shortcuts Horizontal or vertical (and scrollable) layouts by preference and Customizable folders.
Why: I would rather have a feature like this than an app drawer any day. This would allow individuals to organize launcher short cuts by task. It would also be great if it were possible to open files in the system such as pdf, video, music or text files with appropriate application. Another great feature would be the ability to launch shell scripts. I have searched the market and nothing like this was found.
Potential: high. will save customer time allow them to become more visually organized and task oriented as well as adding more visual appeal to the home screens. $5.99 I would buy it! Time limited trial only.

!!! updated 12/28/2012: add code to detect and use mobile hotspot to enable sharing among devices !!!
I'd like to invite people to participate an open testing session for app "PeerDeviceNet - sharing thru WiFi and WiFi-Direct".
It runs on android 2.2 and above. It is free at google play:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xconns.free.peerdevicenet
I have done tests using Nexus 7, Samsung Tab 2.0, Kindle fire(1gen), Galaxy Vibrant. I'd like more complete coverage of devices and vendors.
It supports 4 kinds of device-device connections:
1. for devices at the same wifi net: start PeerDeviceNet at devices simultaneously will allow them find and connect to each other automatically.
2. for devices which are all wifi direct enabled: from system preferences, you can setup wifi direct group connection; PeerDeviceNet will pick up this group info and connect devices in group automatically.
3. if only one device is wifi direct enabled: you can use PeerDeviceNet to create a softwareAP/hotspot at this device (PeerDeviceNet->Connection settings->Create wifi direct hotspot), other wifi devices can use generated ssid and passphrase to connect.
4. for devices with mobile hotspot, you can use mobile hotspot to connect devices and enable sharing.
It extends android's "share/send" feature to allow sharing of the following data:
1. photos/videos (single or multiple) (gallery), audios(astro, solid-browser, or other browsers)
2. web pages (browsers)
3. contact info(Contacts)
4. pdf, word docs (astro or other file managers)
5. apps (google play)
I'll highly appreciate it if you can spend some time installing the app and try out some of the above scenarios. If you encounter Force Closure, please post your device info, android version, or ROM info.
Thanks!
This works fantastically between all of my devices, ranging from Ginger Bread, Honey Comb, and Jelly Bean.
WiFi hotspot also works very well.
This really is a handy app, something like this should definitely be implemented into base Android. Sharing files between devices that have NFC is a breeze, but legacy devices can be troublesome. This is an excellent solution for both worlds.
downloading
looks good
Installed and gave it a test drive.
Works perfectly on our Galaxy S III, Galaxy S II, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Xperia X8, Packard Bell Liberty Tab G100 and Wildfire S - after adding the devices manually. For some unknown reason they don't see each other, though the local LAN has no restrictions put into place.
Hi, I´ve been testing this between SGN2 N7100 (Stock Rooted) and MyTouch 4g Slide (CM9.1 R8) and it works great (no FC etc.)
I have several questions though:
a) I´d like to buy you a beer. There is a paid version but that one is far behind the free one in updates...
b) chat works great (as long as I have signal. but within a flat its mostly great). Will there be an implementation into the full version?
c) if I buy the full version, will you be updating it?
Thanks! Keep it up!
EDIT: seems to me that your app fights with anyconnect VPN (even if that one is running in background I get FC from anyconnect and superuser permissions asked all time... I´ll look into the behavior a bit closer if I find some time) else everything works good.
EDIT: after reinstall of anyconnect it works flawlessly. Keep it up!

Agree with that. It's quite painful to close an app by going into settings instead of hitting some button from the home interface.
Testing now
Downloaded and tried it..
I have a GS3 that it seems to work on, and a Nook color (the original one) from like 2 years ago running CM7 that it just gives a black screen on. I can use the regular wifi connect from the Nook and connect to the hotspot from your PeerDeviceNet but there's no sharing of data back and forth, unfortunately. If the app worked on both I'm sure it'd be much better, but I don't suspect the older Nooks will be a big percentage of your users.

Thanks for your feedback. The failure to see peer devices in LAN could be related to one issue i fixed in the latest release; please give it a try.
Also PeerDeviceNet's "search and connect" is based on peer-peer "pairing": no one is acting as server and waiting for other clients. All participating peer devices must start search at same time or in same short time period so that they can find each other. If one peer finished its searching when a new peer starts searching, the new one cannot see the one just finished. It is for security reason.

File expert is a powerful browser with many nice features. PeerDeviceNet is a totally different creature.
As a app, it plainly extends android native "sharing" protocol (send/send_multiple) to connected devices, to allow you share content from one device to another. (As a framework, it provides the components and runtime to support connected mobile apps). It has minimal GUI to support connecting devices and monitoring send/recv sessions. It has strong support for connecting multiple devices, run multiple concurrent send/recv sessions, and running in background.
So normally you will use your favorite apps to browse/view content, and when you want to share the content with another device, you hit "share" button and PeerDeviceNet will be there to help connect to other devices.
So you can use Astro file manager or Solid explorer with PeerDeviceNet to share files across devices similar to file expert.
Also PeerDeviceNet allows you share contact info, web links, or apps from google play to connected devices.

Mmm, too many button presses to get there. It would be easier to have a "Shutdown" button in the notification shade. Otherwise well done! I tested sharing files between LG Optimus 3D (p920) and Xperia Mini (st15i) connected on the same LAN. Everything worked fine.

When will we see full version updated with chat and unlimited data transfer?
