problem to update to 4.3 with TWRP installed - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys. I have a small question and maybe a problem. I have Nexus 4 rooted with unlocked boot loader, and TWRP installed on it. And as I think with stock rom, because only done everything to root, but nothing else.
Now I have a problem: phone offering to update to 4.3. I press update. It updating and restarting, but after restart it loads TWRP. And what should I do next to finish update? Because I don't know how to make it finish updating with TWRP? What should I do with TWRP to do so? I will be very thankful for any help. Because twice was making update, but still on 4.2.2.

You need to flash the stock recovery because you can't update via OTA with a custom recovery.

You can actually OTA with TWRP.. The device should load into TWRP and complete the update. After the update you will lose TWRP and root

I have seen this in 4.2.2 but not on 4.3. Could you please elaborate a bit more? How did you accomplish this with all these new security policies in 4.3? Thanks.

This is incorrect. The best way to update is download the ota zip from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2145848
Go to twrp recovery flash the ota zip then SU zip v1.51 reboot done. Now you got 4.3 with root and you won't lose your recovery

Sorry if it sounded incorrect to you but what you just suggested, although it works, it is not an OTA update per definition as far as I know. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

When you get the notification saying there is a update on your phone you select it and it downloads flashes the ota zip. What I said is the same thing except you download it and flash it your self and by doing it this way you can flash the SU zip at the same time and not lose root or recovery.

Thanks, your post above made me read that thread you linked and while it works, it's not a real OTA (notification from Google or OEMs), but let's not fall into semantics here, the thing is it works and does the job pretty much like a real OTA. Thanks again, I learned (and downloaded) something new today

I know my friend I'm just trying to say that the affirmation "yes, you can update via OTA using a custom recovery" is not valid for someone getting the notification which is the common scenario for most people. Anyways, it's all good

Little bit confused

I've been looking at the threads but so far I don't believe there's one that tells you what to do if you've actually installed the official OTA update?
I.e. I have an rooted 2.3.4 GT-I9023 with an unlocked bootloader. With no clockwork or anything, as to be honest the last time I used it (on my old HTC DHD) it made my phone unstable (the phone would sometimes boot up of its own accord and stop at the clockwork screen).
Does anyone know how to re-root the NS after it's installed the official OTA update without clockwork?
Thanks
Edit: Downloading the OTA update won't relock the boot-loader will it?

You cannot get root back without a custom recovery. OTA will not relock the bootloader, you'll just lose root and custom recovery.
You need to flash custom recovery using fastboot, then flash superuser to get root back. There are plenty of guides in the stickies describing the process.
Ok, so i'm updated to 2.3.6 but of course have lost root (never had CWM to begin with on this phone). Anyone know where I can DL CWM (i'm assuming it needs to be flashed via platform-tools directory in the android sdk per normal) and the latest su file?
EDIT: nvm, I found the latest CWM and successful flashed (my method was correct). However I've not been able to find the latest superuser.zip to flash yet. Also, I don't know why ppl say to use the market as I don't see how that method can work. I've already got superuser installed from before I updated but that doesn't help me get root. Only flashing the zip from recovery (as I understand it) would. Which renders the market useless in this regard.
/confused
The superuser app checks to see if you have the latest superuser binary and will download and instalk it. Or download superuser from within rom manager.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
Ok..the binary update fails (because i don't have root) so it's chicken and egg as far as I can tell.
You where already told. Flash custom recovery via fastboot. Boot into it and flash su.zip Same way it was done prior to update to the ota. Same as it always was and will be.

You're welcome.
If you stick with a stock ROM then recovery will reflash every time you reboot. To prevent this you can go to system>etc, and change the file install-recovery.init to something else like install-recovery.init.bak.

[Q] Will i still get OTA Updates.....

I'm fairly new to rooting and I just rooted my nexus 4 on 4.3. I was wondering if I would still get ota updates or have the option to flash the new version of android on to my phone. I'm on stock ROM and I have twrp. Also, if I do get ota updates or have the option to flash to the next version, dobi lose any app data, pictures, etc or do I just loose the root

Someone said that root does not matter, but you'll get OTAs if you're on stock. BUT you'll get an error trying to install the update if you're using TWRP or CWM.
You will keep your data and files, but will lose root.

Welcome to android and rooting your phone. Rest assured if a new version of android comes out it will be here just as fast as it will come to your phone. No need to worry about what may happen. Enjoy your rooted Nexus and try some enhanced stock options. Believe me the development in here will make you never miss a stock phone.
But to answer your question you can always use fastboot to obtain your factory recovery again but honestly its a much better world with custom recovery, kernel and enhanced stock rom... T9 missing from stock is a joke in my book
Edit: Also in the future its always good to google your question since I guarantee anything you can think of android related you probably was not the first. Your question is quite common and you may find answers from what others have said could be quite helpful to you
Take Care - welcome again

[Q] Do I have to unroot 4.3 to get the OTA?

I have a rooted (no CWM changed) and unlocked Nexus 4 with JB 4.3.
I did not get the OTA yet and I wondered if it is because the phone is rooted. In addition, I read some problems with people who tried to update to 4.4 with rooted phones and are getting infinite bootloops.
Do I have to unroot my 4.3 for getting the OTA and achieving a successful installation?
Thank you all on advance

I am rooted and received the OTA notification yesterday. You 'SHOULD' be able to install if ALL you did was root. However, if you applied any mods that made changes to the system, the OTA will fail.

First step after installing custom recovery is to wipe data/factory reset, so yes, you will lose your settings.

What I would like is to update to kitkat without losing my data.
I have the bootloader unlocked and the phone rooted, but when I go to recovery mode I get "No command" screen (is that normal?).
I was thinking of getting the phone unrooted, then update through the OTA, then root it again, just for making sure I don't break anything, but the "No command" screen does not look very good...
On the other hand, Would I lose my data if I "unroot" the phone?

To unroot, all you need to do is go into SuperSu, disable root, uninstall the app and then reboot the phone.
If all you have done is root the phone, and didn't modify anything else, then the OTA update 'SHOULD' install without a problem.
You can go to Android Police and download the OTA files and flash them via ADB, or you can just wait for the OTA to be pushed to your device.
If you decide to do it the manual way, there is one additional step you must take to ensure to keep your data I believe.

Thank you for your help gbarayah, I really appreciate it.
One last thing: I'm not pretty sure the only thing I modified was the rooting. I did not install any zip to modify my stock version, but there is something weird. I will explain:
At first I had 4.2.2, then I rooted and installed CWM. When 4.3 was released I got the OTA update correctly but I lost the root, so I rooted it again, this time without CWM.
Is the "No command" screen what is supposed to appear when I go to the recovery mode from fastboot menu? Or I would get a default recovery mode program?
If everything is right I will unroot for getting the OTA, but if not, I'm afraid I will have to flash CWM and the stock version, loosing my settings...
EDIT: Ok, I've just realized to get into stock system recovery I have to press VolUp and Power buttons once I'm in the 'No Command' screen, so I'm pretty sure I don't have problems installing the OTA update. Thank You!!!

Glad I could help. In the future, as long as you don't modify the system by flashing any modifications, you should be able to get the OTA update to install. Root doesn't affect this, and if you're worried about it, you can always uninstall it.
I opted to update using the stock zip files that were posted above and it worked just fine for me.

No, my lack of response was because of the reading I was doing here on XDA as why I wasn't seeing the OTA zip file under cache. Then I realized that I did not download the OTA, I thought that it was downloaded already as I had data on and it was just asking me to whether it should install or not.
Now I downloaded the OTA, and it's there under cache folder, and now at a safe place on my desktop.
I would never install it on my phone without flashing back stock ROM again anyway. I like to do things fresh.

Thanks. It's always nice to have the latest of Android. The new dialer is meaningless for me, again, it just changed it's viewing type, nothing else has been changed! Need to install ExDialer as usual. Will see if there's really something done with the camera, can't take any meaningful photos at 3:30 in the morning
Just one thing, as I have taken the OTA after a fresh install of stock ROM, now I don't need to format it again from recovery right?

No, you don't need the full OTA to update to 4.4. You can update using the following steps:
Flash the boot, recovery, system images from the 4.3 recovery files.
Flash 4.4 delta update using stock recovery.
Flash TWRP and root.

It's certainly a messy thread the way that the OP is laid out that's quite awkward to find anything in! You have to click the grey buttons in the Op where there appears to be a link which will then take you to Mega so you can download at something around 0.5Mbps per year! Have a look at https://mega.nz/#F!bt4UCYiC!LkwGvQqJx4orzQJUDQS13g which appears to be the link once you finally manage to find it. (look under OTA and Incremental)

What?

No, you don't need the full OTA to update to 4.4. You can update using the following steps:
Flash the boot, recovery, system images from the 4.3 recovery files.
Flash 4.4 delta update using stock recovery.
Flash TWRP and root.

Did this work, cause the link i grabbed from the last page of the stock roms thread downloaded fine, but when i installed it, it didn't actually take me to 4.4. I still got the update notification, and my about device still showed 4.3.
