I am currently changing my family over to T-Mobile and had ordered an HTC One for both my wife and I and we received them yesterday. I activated my wife's phone as well as my daughter's phone but I have not done my phone yet. Honestly, I have said for awhile that I want a Nexus Phone, and since the phone is almost half the cost of the HTC One it helps saving money to be able to get a Nexus 5 when it comes out.
Now here are my questions and hoping you all could help guide me: With Google I/O starting tomorrow should I get the phone now or wait to see what is announced at Google I/O (Though it sounds like the Nexus 5 won't be announced until October / November)? I ordered these phones via phone so can I return this HTC to the T-Mobile store? And since I want to return this and I they already requested my phone number to be transferred should I get the Nexus 4 from T-Mobile or order from Google Play (I have NO IDEA why the same phone is $130 more on T-Mobile but I will look that one up).
Any advice would be very helpful! Thanks!

While there won't be any new/major hardware revisions, it never hurts to wait, especially if it's just a day more.
I'm personally curious if tomorrow is when we'll see the fabled white Nexus 4.

The reason why it's cheaper on the Play store because Google sells them at a loss. More precisely they don't make any profit off the phones at such a low price tag. That's why T-Mobile and perhaps some other retailers will sell them for a higher price to make a few bucks off of it.
Since all Nexus 4 are the same you might as well get one from the Play Store. If anything goes wrong, Google can get you a replacement. It's also much cheaper. It comes unlocked so feel free to use it on any GSM carrier.
I think you should wait and see what happens tomorrow at the I/O conference. It seems though a new Nexus smartphone won't be released until the very end of the year.

Interesting... So they aren't making money selling the nexus 4? Why ate they doing it then? Is it just to win over competition?

Lol. They don't need the money. I'm not really sure why they do it. When the new Nexus 7 tablet comes out this summer they're gonna lose $5-$10 for each device sold.
Another interesting thing is that the Galaxy S4 costs about $237 to make. Buying it without a contract will cost you over $600-$700. Crazy, huh?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
They are trying to introduce more people to the play store and android experience, that's why the price is lower. Wait a day and see what happens. But if it comes down to your question about should you return HTC one for the nexus 4, I would. You'll have extra $200 to buy accessories or maybe donate some $$ to charity.

Wait until tomorrow just to see if there will be a storage bump. You can return to tmobile within 14days (30 in CA) as long as you are a new customer, for renewals tmobile no longer has a "cooling off" period so I'm not sure what the process on returns is. Buy from Google. The Samsung S4's BOM (cost of materials) is <$250 now the cost to research/market the phone I find hard to believe would come in at $500 (assuming a $750 unlocked selling price) and yet that is what they want you to believe...my point is Tmo sells the N4 for $130 more because they can and that is what people are used to paying.

So the first article has conjecture and rumor from "analysts". The last 2 are about the nexus 7, a different device, but also say that google is making very little money or selling at cost (which means they aren't losing money and is believable.)
None of the articles have anything to do with you contradicting yourself nor do they have any info from google concerning the cost of the device so...you still contradicted yourself and you still don't know how much money they are/aren't making.

Yep, "we" have known for awhile that these devices only have $200-$300 worth of parts in them and google is using their size to push down prices for devs. Unfortunately it isn't doing anything for the general price of phones, in the US at least, since most people are still on contracts
Google is an advertising company at heart, everything they do is geared towards getting people online 24/7. Hardware is a loss leader

My best friend has a $200 gift card burning a hole in his pocket since July, And loves my Nexus 7 and I keep telling him to wait because demand was so high eventually Best Buy will sell the NExus 7 but time has passed and its not looking that way.
What gives?
i actually called my loacl best buy a few days after release because i was looking for one and customer service informed me that they would have it in stock soon but i have not called back since do to finding one elsewhere. however i do think they will get it, at some point.
A few years back I had a best buy gift card for 50 bucks, didn't need anything at the store....so I found something for 50 and returned it the next day and got cash back.
Not sure if it would work in that amount, buy worth a shot.
You could sell it on Craigslist for not much less, I've done it before.

I got a bunch of best buy cards from that viggle app in hopes of buying a nexus 7. When I realized that they weren't going to sell it I sold the cards on plasticjungle. Com for 85%. Transferred the cash straight to my PayPal account.
I just bought mine at best buy yesterday...? But this was in Canada so maybe it's only Canadian best buys? Weird that Canada actually gets something before the states haha

Its really weird that the don't. Google is losing a lot of sales by not being there.

On that note, I only knew that best buy sold it because I made a spur of the moment decision to check the website. The store didn't even have them out on demo so I almost left empty handed but decided to ask an employee.
I think they're still having stocking problems. My local Walmart only have 3 each, and they just received them in the past few days. I have no idea why Walmart would have them instead of Best Buy, but maybe they just sold out fast? That's my opinion...

BestBuy has them, in stores here the US.. At least that is where I got mine.
Try calling the stores in your area. I had to called 4 of them until I found one that had a 16GB in-stock.
Could always has the person they got the giftcard from if they still have the receipt, then return it for cash.
i bet apple is restricting the sales at best buy. best buy is really apple friendly, at least here in so Cal.

You can go there, use your gift cards for other gift cards they have. I believe they have Amazon as well there.
huh...
At my bestbuy even if I just mention the nexus 7, a worker says "we don't carry the nexus 7 and will never carry it " I've heard that 3 times now, once when I was just talking to a friend about the one I bought at office depot. SO its kinda like they are obligated to say that? Hah who knows!
Before continuing on, I work for Best Buy, for another week.

Best Buy Canada does carry the Nexus 7. Best Buy USA does not. The reason is BBYC has different agreements than BBYUSA.

We are not obligated to say that. It's just that Samsung and Amazon contracts make it so that BBYUSA cannot sell the Nexus 7 due to agreements between the two.

I thought I read somewhere that Apple demanded certain Google products not be sold at Best Buy...not sure why something like a GS3 or Galaxy Tab 2 doesn't qualify....but I'm willing to bet thats the main reason BB hasn't carried them from DAY #1.
Anything can change at any time....and hope it does.
It probably has something to do with the price and the threat the nexus 7 poses to Apple.

It's actually amazon's fault BB is not carrying the Nexus 7 or 10. They threatened to pull their products out if BB decided to carry those tablets. Obviously with so many variations of the Kindle BB would end up losing money if Amazon did pull their products so it makes sense for them. it's just stupid retail politics

Sucks to live in a country where unethical behavior like this is allowed...
If this is true, it clearly falls foul of several of these:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_antitrust_law
When I went to the US in October (Portland, ME) I had a really hard time finding an N7. Best Buy told me that they "Don't sell Google products" and I was like, ooookay. So after a bit of muffing about I finally found one at Staples. And they only had one in stock, so I snatched it up immediately.
Best Buy just had your standard iPad's, Nook's, and a few Samsung tablets. Really horrible selection, at least the one I went to was like that.
Hi, unfortunately my Nexus 7 fell out of its case and now the screen is cracked. I'm using it with a mouse and keyboard now, as the touchscreen is the only thing not working.
I'm travelling right now and will be in the States for a few days, Fort Lauderdale and Miami to be exact.
As it'll be my first time in the country, I was wondering if someone could tell me if there are shops where I could sell my cracked Nexus 7 and how much I could expect?
Also, where can I buy a used Galaxy Nexus there?
Thanks!

Hey, yes it'd be cool if we could work something out. I am going to be in Miami between the 18th and 21st of this month. If you're going to be in the USA for more than 3-4 days and you know someone here, I would recommend you just buy it through the Play store (or have them buy it and pay them back when you get here). It's 2-3 days shipping as they force you to pay for that and it's about $10 on top of the cost of the phone + tax.
The main reason is that if someone is selling what is more or less a new phone on Craigslist, there is a VERY high probability something is wrong with it. Like a friend of mine who going a Galaxy S III off eBay and now is stuck with a piece of crap that reboots itself randomly 5-6 times a day...or like when I bought a GS2 off Craigslist only to find it randomly powers off whenever it feels like it. So even if it seems fine when you check it out, you might be buying crap.
In other words, you are probably buying someone's problems in the high end phone area. You might also consider buying it new from a place that sells phones off contract. Most retails stores allow that as well. Not worth the $50-75 you might save buying it "used" off Craigslist.
if you want, id be interested in purchasing it from you. just let me know how much you are asking and maybe we can work something out.

Thanks for the info. Do you know how much tax it will be? From what I've read it should be 6% in Florida. Is that right? Buying it brand new is also an option for me, as it is still considerably cheaper than in the UK. From a quick search it seems most retailers don't sell the Galaxy Nexus for $349, as offered in the Play Store. Am I right in believing that?

Looks like 7% in Miami. Yes, $349 is the MSRP, so $373 should be your price when all done. Unless you go Play store, then add about another $9-12 for shipping.

I am ready for a new phone... but can still wait for a couple new months.... Want to get the Nexus 4 --- stuck on SGS2 and G2X.
I know the Google I/O is in May, so trying to figure out, wait till May - to see what happens, and then buy a new phone in May (if a new one comes in at that time).. or does the new Nexus not really become available till late in the year for purchase.. about Oct/Nov.
If its that long, I would rather by the N4 right now.
Any Ideas from you guys?

AFAIK, Google never released a Nexus smartphone at I/O. Nexus phones are usually released around Oct/Nov. Nexus 4 was released last Nov. I wouldn't expect another Nexus phone in May. There might however be a Motorola phone during I/O, but I don't think it'll be a Nexus device.
You can expect a successor for Nexus 7 as it was released last I/O.
When they feel the need of more money....
Changing the vendor for the nexus device is just not working for them. This time even they cheated the customers with n4 with all the junky hardware when they knew that new arm designs are coming just after a month.
So a futuristic hardware is what we all need.

I have no idea what you're talking about. Nexus devices are intended to be reference devices to showcase the latest versions of Android in their stock, unfettered form. They're for developers. Nexus devices (outside of the Nexus One) have never been top of the line in terms of hardware. They don't need to be. Nexus isn't marketed as a premium brand, nor does it have the premium brand price tag that comes along with it. My God, they're selling the Nexus 4 for $299 8GB and $349 16GB off contract. What do you expect for that price?

You won't see a new Nexus phone before fall. So if you want a Nexus, pull the trigger on an N4. It's a great phone, the price is right, and you're basically guaranteed Android version updates through at least the middle of next year.

Subjective opinion is subjective.
As for ETA of Nexus 5, I too doubt Google will announce it at Google I/O. Although it has been done before (HTC Dream), recent trend shows Google I/O focuses more on tablets. But you never know, just be patient.
We will see, last year Google launched two tablets. Rumours are that Motorola X will be launched on Google I/O. I hope they will, but if you need a phone now, N4 is still very good choice.

Like said by most, look more for the fall for a true Nexus device. This might talk about KLP but not new hardware on the phone, maybe preview an update to the tablet though.

There is a thanks button but is there a "ignore this person who has no clue" button?
Junky hardware? The most recent marketed ARM architecture in a quad core phone with a decent GPU, spangly glass back, HD screen and all for nearly the subsidized price of every other phone on the planet (the SGS3 is like $600 without carrier subsidy).
This phone is easily the bargain of the century, which is probably why Google was caught off-guard when they launched it. The previous Nexii were only bought by nerds, now I know a dozen people who used other Android phones or iPhones that jumped to unrooted Nexus 4s just because of the cost savings.
Thank you guys... as I stated, I can easily put of a couple of months, its mainly the G2X that is killing me and want to replace that....but if its till fall, then I might as well bite the bullet and get this one.. instead of waiting till later on.
does anyone think the Motorola phone will be thru google also.. or would that be thru carriers? because I am DONE with carriers.. want it straight from the source.
Right now its sounding like its not going to be a Nexus, so no guaranteeing that its going to be on the cutting edge of Android. Also, it might be available unlocked but I suspect it wont be unlocked for $300/350. Probably more like the $600 everything else goes for unlocked.
Even if it was only $400 Id rather have the Nexus 4. Every rumor seems to be stuck on the Tegra chip, I have had two devices with Tegra chips and both were massive disappointments. Qualcomm seems to be really good at beating Nvidia in the mobile space without breaking a sweat.
Ditch the carriers now, its amazing how satisfying it can be. Not only is your bill cheaper but you always know in the back of your mind that if they ever angered you that you could tell them to shove it at any time.
Yeah .. I am ready to ditch the carriers... just need to have my number ported over to GVoice so that I can keep my number....unless there is another method?
How does keeping your number work with prepaid?
And Yeah I am going to go ahead and get the Nexus then, since fall is too far away to deal with G2x --- cant believe its another LG I am going to go to after that fiasco
You can port it to pre-paid as well, they are still under the rules set by the portability act. Being said you might as well just port it to GVoice and use that. Then you could change carriers and sims at will without worrying about the number.
One thing to note, voicemail is a bit wonky with pre-paid because only AT&T right now supports conditional forwarding, so if someone got a hold of the actual phone number you will get an old fashioned voicemail instead of GVoice. Otherwise it works well (I call out using the app). Calling the Google Voice number though gets you the transcribed voicemails.
I am with straight talk and can flip back and forth at will between AT&T or T-Mobile sims month to month based on where I am. I just cant flip numbers back and forth, so that is why the Google Voice number is key.
As far as the phone itself is concerned. I read the reivews (short and long term) for the Optimus the Nexus was made from and everyone, virtually unanimously, said it was an incredible phone let down by ****ty software. Well, making it a Nexus and putting vanilla android solved that. Add that stupidly low price and its a done deal.
Just ordered it from the Play store... I guess they are shipping within about 2 weeks or so.. should get it by April.. hopefully.

What? I ordered mine I think 2 weeks ago when starting my day in the office and got it waiting for me the next day after work. Well the yellow delivery car was still parking in front of our flat while my wife happened to receive the delivery. This happened to me almost twice, when I ordered the first Nexus 4 a month ago for my cousin in Romania, they needed one more day...
Cheers, Lucian

Changing the vendor for the nexus device is just not working for them. This time even they cheated the customers with n4 with all the junky hardware when they knew that new arm designs are coming just after a month.
So a futuristic hardware is what we all need.

What? With one of the best mobile processors available (the best at launch), 2GB ram and a very good 720p HD display; the N4 is faar from being 'junky'.
Get your facts right.
I agree to users who say that n4 offers this much in this price tag. If ur a price centered person then why not go for cheap huwavei phones they have even more to offer in half the price of n4.
Nexus should be a premium device sith futuristic hardware. A average hardware, means that samsung or other oem are giving u more futuristic device that can get more updates on a single version than nexus.
Price should not be a justification.

That makes no sense...when the n4 came out it came with the best processor on the market and 2 GB of ram...those $200 crap huwavei come with single core 1ghz processors and 512mb of ram and a ****ty screen...so how exactly are they better when they use specs from 2 years ago?

I was planning to get the Nexus 4 this weekend then I heard a rumor about a 32gb version.
http://androidheadlines.com/2013/04/rumor-lg-nexus-4-with-32gb-of-storage-lte-and-key-lime-pie-launching-at-google-io.html
I wanted to get the 16gb version tomorrow. I didn't get my N7 until after they release the 32GB N7 and they got rid of the 8gb n7 and lowed the price of the 16gb. I'm a college student trying to say money.
Do you this might happen to the N4 too? The article says it might be launching at Google I/O which is less than a month away.
Should I wait another month and see what happens or got ahead and get it now?
Thanks!
Then get the n4 32gb. duh.
Smartphone these days gets older quick the more month you wait

This makes me sick. This is companies testing how stupid consumers can get. I made a post when the nexus 4 first came out stating that they will do this. "Hey let's make a ****ty amount of storage and months later release the same exact phone with more space" why? People people will gladly throw their money at it. People need to open up their eyes seriously

Smh they should ve did this from the beginning I would've paid 500 for a 32 gb nexus 4 lol...

Will be the same case as Nexus 7 !?
The rumor going around is not only will it have 32gb but will also have Key Lime Pie first. So really at this point you might as well wait if you are patient enough.

I not trying to get the 32gb version. I just want a price drop of the current 16gb I'm originally going to get.

Who knows, the other rumor going around is that a new Nexus 7 will be announced at a price point of $150. So if that is true that a new one with better hardware is released at that price range then have no reason to drop the price or remove the old ones off the play store.

NEXUS⁴
I doubt it will have LTE (unless the just reenable band 4) but I could see 32gb, not a big deal it's 6mos. after release.
Yes I just bought one the other day... Fml-___- why Google why.
And to the guy above me: I think they're actually putting a new radio in the phone (cdma gsm hybrid)

@DEFJAMVAN that make two of us. I'm in exact situation and dilemma. Just wish that 15 May could come faster so can decide
Get it while its hot this machine is great even with its storage limitations which help me take the leap to cloud storage which is cheaper than SD cards anyway
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I'm on the same boat. Was gonna buy a N4 this week but will hold till May to see if this rumor is true. What I find difficult is the addition of LTE without carrier involvement (see Verizon GNexus) and if the carrier is involved it most certainly will not be sold for $350 - $400 off contract.
Hopefully they do a different design and also with better camera. Got bored with the current one and need some new design on the nexus. Also throw in lte and higher storage. Don't do CDMA as usual because Verizon sucks.

hope it will gets more improvement , especially overheat !!! and instant massage delay !!!
Wait this one out
The best thing for you to do is just wait after google i/o... they probably aren't going to release anything before, I wouldn't risk the money when you can save some if you get it after they announce an update n4 or the next nexus
I love how everyone in this thread is taking this article as gospel.
What would be the point in disabling LTE if they are just going to re-enable it?

I want to move back to Android after a stint with Windows Phone 8. Where can I get the cheapest price for the Verizon Note 3 off-contract? The Verizon online store has it for $700.

Try craigslist. You are not going to find the Note 3 off contract for less than $550-600.
Way too early to get it cheaper. It's a highly anticipated device so everyone is gonna get asking price for it. Like ericdabbs said, try craigslist after its already been released. There will be people who bought it then found it too big for them.
I paid $745 via Verizon website

Won't buying on Craigslist risk your phone being banned after someone defaults on payments?

No, because that phone will be assigned to your account not theirs.

Perhaps Verizon and Sprint still ESN block and attach to account.
GSM phones block across the board and are only attached to the original account.
I thought with LTE they would do the same. Glad they don't. It's very scummy.

It's all junk on cl to mean anymore. Buying a $600+ phone on there scares me anymore. I will pay full retail and know it had been in my hands it's whole life

You will have to pay ~$700 unless you find someone dumping their used one. But that won't happen for at least a couple of weeks after launch.

I have bought & sold many phones on craigslist. You just have to be careful who you're dealing with, and you have to know what you're buying. And make sure you verify the ESN status before handing over money.

I have bought and sold tons in years past. Until this year. Too many shady people with shady phones and mix matched boxes for phones and stuff. I looked at half a dozen s3 for a backup phone then I threw the towel in. They were all junk. Won't risk that anymore. I always esn check and usually activate them on the stop. Never any issues with that just the stuff on there anymore is no good

Yep, I've met sellers with oddball stuff that didn't match their ad, or they just seemed shady, and I didn't waste time bailing out. Trust your gut. If something doesn't seem right, there is usually a good reason why it feels that way.

Moving to Q&A
I would say eBay from someone who bought one and decided it was "too big" and was too late in returning it, also check swappa.com
Craigslist always has people who buy the phone at upgrade price and immediately sell for a couple hundred off full retail. They make some easy cash and you save some. Just make sure you meet the seller at a Verizon store to verify not stolen. On a side note if you live in a marginal coverage area you can open a new account and get phone for discount price. Wait 15 days and complain about signal. They let you walk from contract with no charge. Then you just pop your sim in and bingo bango bongo. Im on my parents family plan with unlimited so this worked for me last year.
beamed from transporter room 3
Check Swappa. I'm not sure I'll be keeping my glitch-ordered white 32gb Note 3. I already bought my GS4 at full retail.
Will have to see what my first impressions are...
