I will use the Android TV stick mostly for watching movies on XBMC, and I also want to know if any of them is capable of playing 1080p. So what'd you choose at the moment? I found the Imito MX2, and maybe the MX808 or 809, but what do you find the best stick at the moment?
I would be interested to read people's opinions also on this. I currently use two Xbox 360's with media center but Android sticks could be a nice alternative.

I chose the iMito MX2 due to it's speed and the fact that it had Bluetooth built in. I have two, and the only real problem I've had is that the play store can't seem to differentiate between them... I'm assuming I'll have to hack a serial down the road in one of them to fix it. It plays 1080p though, and is fast enough to handle dead trigger and retro arch with a gamepad, and blows my raspberry pi out of the water in xbmc smoothness. There are likely better sticks out now due to the quad cores, but these work really well for me.

I just bought MK 802 III for 58 dollars and It looks and works fantastic. It is dual core with 1GB ram. I read some reviews about it and most of them were positive. Android app to control it makes it better. I played some HBO Go movies and they were flawless and very clear. I also tested some 1080P videos from youtube and they works without any issue. On netflix I could see how the video started choppy but then turned into clear HD. I havent played with it much I think I am going to like it.
I also used FAVI smartstick, it was nice too but couldnt play 1080P videos. HBO go was low quality as it is single core.

Hi all, from my search the new quad cores look like they could actually be useful HTPC replacements.
They run the new RK3188 Chip, which means 1.8ghz (Quad core) CPU and MALI 400 GPU. I am still waiting for some custom ROMs and XBMC compatibility tests, but so far they look very promising.
From the reviews I've read/watched the MK908 looks like having a much improved WIFI reception, Bluetooth 4.0 and 2GB of RAM (most new sticks with the RK3188 have 2GB of RAM).
So let's see which Android pc stick will get the developers support , and then choose accordantly.
The competition is on.

Android stick for mothers day - need advice
I need to order an android stick and I need it fast, but I need product advice. I'm buy it for my mother for mothers day so that she can stream video over netflix and from my Plex server in my home a couple hundred miles away. I want her to be able to Skype rather seamlessly and since she's not very good with computers, less peripherals = better gift. Please advise on everything that I need to get her setup. I'll need either a stick that has a camera built in or I'll need a compatible web cam to buy separately from the stick. Same goes for the keyboard. I'd like it to be already set at or upgradeable to android 4.2 so that she can use it for Miracast. Please let me know:
- Which stick I should buy
- Recommended airmouse/air keyboard w/ mic and speaker if necessary
- Recommended/compatible wifi and/or USB webcam to clip onto the TV
- Recommended USB hub if I need one
If possible recommend devices that can be bought off of Amazon or somewhere in the US so that I can get it by Saturday. If not that's OK too I guess, it'll just be a bit late.

Really depends on ROM support. Seems most get the mk808 models. I have one and the 809 and 809ii. All work the same. Slight performance gain on 808. 1080 works on all but not very good for me. Gets choppy.
I am waiting for quadcores to hit the market before i get into them more. They should work alot better then!

I have the MK809ii and I purchased it because it has 8gb memory, dual core, and bluetooth. From what I remember the 808 had less memory and no bluetooth. I think the 808b has bluetooth but If I remember correctly that one also had 4 gb memory.

Once the quadcores get down near the $60 range I'll be moving towards one of those, best to watch which quadcore gets most development attentions. ROM developers help make the stick faster and better. I'm sure once the MK808B has an overclocking kernel I'll be able to get close to the freescale quadcore in benchmarks. 1080 over wifi not possible, not sure I've seen anyone posting success with wifi 1080.
I have an 802IIIs plugged into a 1080p 60 Hz TV. It works well, it was exactly as I had expected.
I use it only really to watch Youtube, Netflix, and other TV/videos online. It does an excellent job doing that. Pair it up with a wireless mouse or Droidmote and you got a pretty good set up. If you're using Droidmote via your phone or tablet, you can even enter text in the 802 via your phone or tablet's microphone.
Angry Birds runs smoothly on it too. GTA III and Vice City (you have to sideload Vice City) all work very well. I've never played them on PS2 so I can't compare the graphics, but action and frame rate are actually very smooth, no lag at all. You can hook up a PS3 controller to your tablet/phone running Droidmote and play with a physical controller.

My first Android Stick was the Uhost U1A and it is down to $30 on Geekbuying.com. It has a single core cpu and is more than capable of streaming online content. Most single core devices score about the same and Uhost U1A has the best firmwares. I ran a bunch of benchmarks and you can use that to compare to most dual core systems or your android phone/tablet.

I constantly have the operating system asking if it should end a process because it was running too slow. I didn't have many issues gaming, but I didn't play too many games on it. I can watch Youtube without any hiccups, it uses almost no cpu power to play NO HD content. MX Player offers hardware acceleration so 720p videos are possible.

how is the performance for running this for many hours. I mean if you are watching youtube/online streaming for 3-5 hours continuous, does it perform well or any degradation in performance. Any issues of heating up, also how is the wifi radio does the connection stays stable with your wifi router so that online stream plays without any issues.
Also does anyone know if geekbuying.com does shipping to MiddleEast?

If you've already got another Android device give the free MK802III wifi controller app a try (despite it's name it works fine on MK808b - the server side is pre-installed on the device and is called ehome media)

I have used mine for online streaming for 3 - 4 hours at a time (Youtube, BBC iPlayer, various tv episode streaming sites) without any issues affecting performance, no over heating, no signal loss or dropped connections. The only thing that was mildly irritating was that the default web browser (which works surprisingly well with flash) was set to iPad as the default user agent - change it to Desktop and it calls exactly the same version of websites as your PC browser.
I am still using the stock JellyBean 4.2.2 ROM that shipped on the device.
I just saw that Geekbuying is selling the Tronsmart T428 quad core tv stick for only $99 w/ free shipping.
This based on the newest quad core chipset by rockchip, the RK3188 with 2GB of Ram. It should be a real winner.

I've been looking forward to this one since the announcement last month.
As usual shipping from china takes some time. However in the USA there isn't much problems with customs.
I've ordered plenty of stuff via Hong Kong of Singapore shipping and at worst have only had to go to the post office to pick it up.
I ordererd with DHL, but I also ordered some other items to make it worth the extra cost.
Plus it costs me $10 to get to the post office and back so express shipping just makes sense to me.
I'm sure these will show up on ebay in about a month for $10-$20 more with a usa seller.
That's the way these things usually go.

The current stick with the most support, roms, and development would be the original MK808.
It's based on the RK3066 dual core with 1GB ram and 8GB nand. This is considered last generation hardware.
I love/hate this stick. It uses the RK901 wifi which has signal drop problems and maxes out at 65Mbps.
It's also one of the few android sticks with a heatsink which allows it to operate at over 1.2Ghz without issues.
It can be had for under $45 shipped. I own several of these.
I just received news that another RK3188 stick is being released.

The MK908 does have an extra mini usb port with OTG support.
The MK908 has a female mini hdmi port instead of a male full size hdmi connector.
There's also a price difference. MK908 is $89 vs the T428 at $99.
It's a good deal if you don't need/want 5Ghz wifi.
I also ordered one of these so I should be able to provide a review when it comes.

As of right now you can't put ubuntu onto the rk3188 devices.
There is no kernel source released or leaked. Hopefully we'll get some kernel source like we did for the rk3066
It may be possible to do ubuntu the old way with a vnc viewer, but I won't know until I get my sticks delievered.
I'm willing to be the guinea pig for any testing that needs to be done once I have these speed demons in my hands.

The controller at the top of my list is the Logitech K400. I like the position of the extra mouse button on the opposite side from the touchpad.
It's a bit big though.
I've also had success using the Rii Mini, and the Measy RC12.
I'm using that K400 keyboard and it works great. It has about 90% functionality in Android. Now about this Quad stick. I'd stay away from the thing or any Media box/stick unless you can mod it with a heat sink at least .. TV boxes get pushed more then a smartphone does and while these CPU's run cool enough in a smartphone and tablet, not so much in a Media box. I have the Promethius and it didn't have a heat sink. Playing Angry Birds or any 3D game caused it to lock up. I added a heat sink and it worked fine but ran really hot even at stock clocks. Now that I've moded my box with a tall heat sink and fan, this is no longer the problem and It runs super cool, even overclocked to 1.3GHz. These products are being made half ass. Be warned !

Both the T428 and the MK908 have heatsinks. So no worries on that end!
The Prometheus really needed a heatsink as did the original UG802.
Anyhow I'm expecting delivery by Tuesday so hopefully I'll have preliminary reviews up by Wednesday.

I received both the T428 and the MK908 last night. So I've started the review process and should have something up within the next day or 2.
The link you provided for the UG802B has screen shots showing that it also is running at 1280x672.
From what I've seen with the RK3066 kernels it's just a matter of selecting 1080p when they compile the kernel.
So any of these devices should be able to support native 1080p if the manufacturer compiles a kernel for it.
The real trick for rockchip would be for them to finally figure out how to enable real switching of resolutions. They generally make these chips for tablets that have set screen sizes so they haven't gotten that down yet.

I've never used miracast before, so I've been trying to set it up with my phablet.
I know that the T428 has support for it, I just don't seem to be able to connect properly with my phablet.
The T428 says connected, my phablet sticks at connecting...
In other news I've uploaded the stock 4.2.2 firmware for the T428.

I have had my shield now for a few weeks and I thought I'd share my opinion.
This thing is amazing. I do not understand why NVidia is not marketing this little machine. It's amazing.
I've got a 64 gig micro SD in it that has only 2 gigs free because I have it filled with ROMs
I have very few gripes about it.
1 - No camera. I really would have liked a camera for skype capabilities.
2 - R2 and L2 don't seem to be mappable on all the emulators. I think that is emulator problems not the shield itself.
3 - The lack of marketing. It's not very popular so developers are not really making many games strictly for the shield.
I have not played my PSP nor my exploited PS Vita since I got the shield. I honestly did not expect it to be this good. While the Vita has that super beautiful OLED screen, the Shield has a much better looking picture on EVERYTHING I have put on it.
This is my first android device. I have an iPhone 5, I may have to go straight with android from now on. This is great. I love how you can just use micro SD cards and you don't have to go spend a fortune on a memory card because you have no other choice.
This device is so highly under rated that it makes me sad.
I am actually looking into this. At $250, I say it's well worth it

Yea. But in my opinion I think it is still well worth the price tag. Look how much the vita costs and then how much you have to put in it for games and memory cards. The Shield costs a lot less in the long run and it has much better specs.
Shield is the the best portable gaming system yet. With the absolutely best controller - real joystick.
Best speakers also. 64gb card cost 40$ vs 100$ vitas 32gb.
The problem is that n64 emulators are very slow, no dreamcast emu also.
Mame support is limited.
Only 2 hardware/software problem. Lack of vibration and slow start up. Sleep state kill the battery.

i5 + 4gb ddr3 + sshd + gtx650 above you can play with a good quality, first gaming on the small Shield display you dont need use AA, and you can play 720p (Shield display native resolution) and your games will still be nice and beautiful running medium quality or more, its less then us$3000.
I recently upgraded my PC to a gtx 770 with an i5 (+ram, SSD, etc) and paid less than $1000 if I was targeting the minimum specs streaming requires you could get away with under $500. $3k is so completely overkill on a system if all your doing is streaming. I bet most people can get away with just a GPU upgrade if they have a normal PC bought within the last 3 years.

You could get away with a $500 set up for streaming.
I don't understand how the shield could be held in such high regard when an original psp for 50 to 100 bucks will do all the things op said.

If we're talking only about emulators, then I don't think its even close. I remember the PSP having a hard time with snes emulation. I also don't think a decent n64 emulator exists and playstation games look so much better on the Shield (retroarch). There's also a DS emulator for Android

The psp does not have the beautiful high def 5" screen. It also does not have the amazingly comfortable controller. The shield also runs the DS emulator and the psp does not. The sound quality, video quality, overall quality of the shield is leaps and bounds ahead of the psp.
Also, there are a bunch of my favorite games that I cannot map R2 and L2 triggers on the psp.

I use ppsspp and it works great. I have had only 1 game(assassins creed) that runs slow on it. Everything else runs excellently. And you can use those extra triggers to fast forward through those stupid scenes that you don't like.
with amazon continue need to block root and a locked bootloader. I was wondering how many of you dont want to deal with the cat and mouse game and just get a Nexus Player instead.

You can be 100% sure this thing will be locked down just as hard as the Fire TV. Just look at the Chromecast.

I agreed, It probably locked bootloader and unless Google changed their mind letting us have a unlock bootloader = addicted flasher custom ROM. I might email some google developers and see what their response regard the bootloader status.

While the idea of a stock google variation interface is appealing, the less ram, lack of hardwire ethernet and even less buttons on remote make it a significantly less attractive candidate IMO for XBMC, I'll stay with my fire TV (especially since I'm lucky enough to have 3 of them with root and CWM already w/blocked updates)

100% sure? Google TV and Chrome products have been locked down. ChromeBook and Chromecast. This device is called a Nexus, and i cant name one Nexus device that is locked down. Even my nexus q was easily unlocked!!! Even though i can see them locking the device i disagree with the level of certainty you have (100%)

Less Ram: Good point, but one of the android forums mention this wont be a problem with the intel chip. Time will tell.
lack of hardwire ethernet: the fire tv has FastEthernet which is limited by 100, Wireless N gives fastethernet a run for its money and this device supports AC. Way faster than fastethernet.
I will be giving it a shot I think. Need an extra unit for the bedroom TV anyway. Will wait to see if it is rootable first though I think

This is only one device released by google, nvidia could release their own android tv device along with htc, samsung, acer, asus, motorla, hisense.... Etc... Even though i doubt nvidia will release a box since they already sell an nvidia shield tablet (which doesnt support dts pass through). Even though im sticking with my firetv i am interested to see others join. Especially if this pushes amazon to properly support vc1, 24p, 4k, dts-hd/truehd, 802.11ac.
I don't think you guys are remembering exactly what "Nexus" means. It means do whatever you want to the device.
Yes the Nexus 7 was locked but they made it easy to unlock for us to mod. The whole nexus line is the play ground line if you want to mod and have fun with your device.
I for one am going to be jumping ship because quite frankly, Amazon has, and always will be, absolutely garbage when it comes to making anything interface related. Their app sucks, their web interface sucks, their amazon fire TV interface sucks, everything they design is garbage when it comes to UI.
I've had a blast with this device but with them locking it down...no bueno.
As per the wireless worry, it's 5GHz AC. If you're doing anything that's going to be able to tax THAT, having an ethernet cable isn't going to save you.

Since Nexus Player is x86 and it has an Intel Atom chipset,does that mean it utilizes the Houdini processing for running arm apps in the x86 architecture?
Still sucks because of crappy limit of RAM.
I saw that the price is going to be $99 like the Fire TV's original price.
Make a 2GB RAM version of Nexus Player for an extra $20.00 to make it more appealing.
Heck,replace them all with 2GB RAM for only $10.00 more cost.

1 GB is fine. Unlike phones we wont be multi-tasking as much. The Nexus Player will mostly only worry about the active application which is why 1 GB will be fine. As for the CPU its an Inel Atom which has been shown to run as fast as a Snapdragon 801, for comparison sakes the FireTV uses a Snapdragon 600.
Its not exciting enough for me to jump over to it. My AFTV is doing everything i need right now, not to mention the lack of ethernet is a deal breaker. Unless wireless AC has come down quite a bit in the last few months, Im not ready to make that move.
Will have to wait and see how the Nexus Player performs. But one major drawback I see already is the limited storage just like FireTV but no true USB socket. Why would i want to mess with a OTG cable even before having to deal with a USB Hub or just a USB device. MicroUSB on a phone is fine. But on one of of this devices is stingy. The Nexus Player is going to have to really WOW me to get me over the lack of a regular USB socket.

the specs are really irrelevant, this is the first entry into the android TV market (besides the ADT-1) sure, this box is specd a tad low and surely isnt going to be an enthusiasts dream machine, but im sure we arent going to see google release anything else anyways, what i do think well see is all the manufacturers incorporating android TV into their own players in the very near future (think a high specs "Samsung Galaxy Player" or something like "Sony Xperia Player") and if google is successful with their play services like music and video on demand like im sure they will be i think within the next year or so many TVs and things will be running android TV on them also. should be an exciting year for people who like android stb setups. they kinda failed before with googleTV or whatever it was but i think the timing is right this time and "android TV" is going to be the next big thing for internet media on demand lovers everywhere.

Would love to see one with OTA Antenna & PVR built in. Would be the perfect machine. For now a rooted FireTV will be the best for the price.
I'll wait for the actual user reviews to start showing up before I make a final decision, but at this point I'm leaning toward no. The biggest drawback to the FireTV for me is lack of storage. 8G is just not enough, I will not buy another FTV game until an official firmware update includes support for USB drives. Just a wild guess, but I suspect the Nexus Player has this same limitation. I'm willing to wait a bit longer and pay a bit more for a different Android TV box with better specs and hardware support.

My elderly mom gets lost in her Windows PC, but does OK on her Android tablet. I'm looking for a high-powered Android box to replace the Windows PC, doing mostly Skype and Mail/Web/FB/News. That rules out the mainstream Amlogic-based boxes (weak CPU, low RAM), but I'm worried the RK3399 boxes are marginal/amateurish/not well supported. The plan is to make the UI the exact same as her tablet, with the extra comfort of a mouse, big screen, and loud sound. She'll be doing he exact same things as on her tablet so I'm unbothered by Android/Desktop limitations. Skype support (so, no ChromeOS) and reliability/dependability are a must.
The Vorke Z3 has disappeared. Does anyone have feedback on the Cloudnetgo CR19 or the CSA96 ? Or at least their OEMs ?

I agree, the CDR19 looks great. 4 x USB + SATA + external antenna, plus extra audio ports and front display.

However what about the limitations I keep reading about RockChip? No one actually specifies what these are, and all my online searches reveal nothing, except old pre-2015 reviews of older architecture.

I got the $80 H96 max. It works OK as a PC once you switch Launchers (for some reason only MS launcher will install, no Nova, Google..).
The one limitation I ran into was DRM support; not an issue for PC use, but I'd avoid it as a media player/HTPC.
Performance, reliability, features are otherwise fine.

Once I replaced the default TV Launcher with a more normal one (strangely, only MS Launcher would install, most would bug out), she's happy with it, it's stable and runs the double-handful of apps she needs (Skype etc...). The cloudnetgo is a dynamic promising device, I'd like to have one. Still supported minimal, don't do it. My little mecool m8s Pro with a magendanz custom ROM is a powerful fast extremely stable device. The pro L model comes with enhanced DRM abilities, meaningful high-def capability for streaming. I truly suggest you go look at the developers first. Look for the boxes I support. And you're better off to stay with an amlogic SOC, they just a wider and deeper support base. The amlogic S922 will be out shortly, and it'll be the best thing available oh, I am sure. Yet it will take awhile for support and custom roms to be available. That's my two cents, good luck
