Does anyone use them?
Heard from some guys at verizon they can actually be bad for your device not sure if I believe that so what is your opinion ?

Care to explain why they're bad for your device?
As yes, I use them
Well he said on newer devices they can slow them down , I was super convinces by this either

It does more bad than good. Its forcing applications to be removed from the memory. Which is uneeded as android will handle its own memory there is no need for you to use a task killer. When you clear apps from the recent apps list.. that does the same thing as a task killer.. but natively. It will remove the apps from the background and will indeed stop them. Dont worry about task killers.

Exactly what ÜBER said, task killers are a no-no.
In theory they slow your device down, cause extra battery drain and are not needed since eclair 2.1.
They remove running services which the device loads back up into memory again using CPU cycles which uses battery.
Leave android handle all memory, it has had a major overhaul since it was first created.

it's the main reason for the major battery drain (every time there's a significant drain, i open up advanced task killer and notice there are 10+ apps running). i'd like to know what the point in this is? some of these apps are useless, and i can't see why the android would want to load them to make anything run more efficient. so is there an app that lets you choose the apps you want to "disable"?
and is it going to be better when froyo comes out?
if you have root, you can uninstall them
Just cause atk shows an app doesnt mean the app is actually running. This ignorance is precisely why task killers suck.

Get root, get Titanium backup, uninstall.
A program like system panel will show you which apps are actually active (running)

Coming from the cliq rooted with a 2.1 rom, atk was a necessity IMO.But ive hard that task killers are not needed with froyo and that it hurts more than it helps. But ive noticed that even with atk on froyo, apps aren't being killed unless I go to settings/applications/manage apps to force close myself. Ive tried just not force closing or killing apps and ive noticed it being a memory hog and decrease in performance and battery, but thats just my own personal testing.
What's your opinion on task killers and such? do I need it or am I better of without one?

I am using "advanced app killer'. A number of stock apps will restart right after, but most others will not.
I use it right after starting up, and after closing some apps (they often keep running in background). I think this is helping materially with my battery life - which is fairly good.

is a horrible thing. the second u close an app and it instantly reopens itself your cpu shoots up 100% and you end up killing more battery by doing that.
Haven't seen the need for a task killer. I run System Panel app and what I'm seeing is the majority of the apps listed are on background and not taking up CPU power at all.
If anything, once I root, I'll probably use Autostarts just to minimize the number of apps that run at startup. But right now... not even necessary.

now im constantly running a $hit load of ram, 277mb/326mb, and the phone is not particulary any faster. if anything its kinda slow actually. just really stuttery.
any tips?

As to the memory usage, Android, and Linux in general, use and allocate memory differently than in Windows. High memory usage is not necessarily a bad thing due to how the system works. Odds are, there is something else that is causing your slowdown, an app that you have installed or something that you changed. Do you have a task killer installed, or do you have a bunch of widgets installed in running? Are you using TouchWiz, or another launcher? You can use an app such as Watchdog or the built in Task Manager to see if any apps are taking up a bunch of CPU time as that is what will cause more of a perceived slowness compared to high memory usage.

Your question has nothing to do with development, thats why it doesn't belong.
OSMonitor also works well. Sounds def like an app. Task killers, lookout (an app) and virus free (app also) have been known to cause issues and are generally culprits of lag issues. Check to make sure those aren't installed

I did that tutorial so I am using launchpro. The only extra apps I have installed BESIDES what was needed ffor the tutorial are angrybirds, robodefense, doubletwist(with all of my music),snesoid, romgripper, and I think that's it. Nothing too crazy. Is there anyway to check if that whole voodoo thing worked? Or if I did the tutorial correctly? Oh wait, isnt there like a bench mark tester orsomething?

The only widget I have is for doubletwist. But it doesnt consistently run just by having the widget on my homescreen does it? Do I still need an extra task killer app?

Then what can I do to ensure my phone is running correctly? Cause it really doesnt feel like it is.
Try Watchdog or another app that records cpu usage and see if you have a rogue app hogging cpu time. Even before installing a new rom that was cleaned up and a new kernel, I didn't have any significant lag or anything, so I'd guess that you have something running in the background causing your issues.
His lag could be from rfs working too hard.
Install one of geeknik's stupid fast kernels or install one of jt's voodoo5 kernels if you want to convert rfs to ext4. rfs and stock kernel tend to generate ridiculous lag.

That is only true if he has an app that is constantly writing which means the above suggestions to find said app are the best. Also on regards to kernels only voodoo kernels will address rfs problems. Only voodoo.

Task killers are okay, just not needed. The real issue is the auto killing and killing system apps.
Long press home, use that instead if really necessary.
I use automem killer and keep it on a strict setting

(at least You can be sure the task killer is not some mallware program stealing Your identity)

where you using autokiller? because if you where thats a different type of task management app.
auto killer is used to tune androids natural task killing abilities. also galaxy tuner also has these features built into the app.
Here is some informed info on using these types of memory managers.

Oh well check out that info I posted. Besides having auto kill on lowers your battery life because its constantly killing stuff. Your phone uses the same amount of power regarless if you have things in memory or not.
WOW , i didnt say battery preformance decrease because of task you kill BUT! it increases loading times ! which also decrease your battery !
No one said you said anything bro. I was just sharing information I know to be true as confirmed by developers that I follow. My info was not directed at anyone or anything.

No... No.....
I get better battery life without it.
Don't use it for any version. Android has its own management and frees memory as needed. The only way it'll help battery is if you need to close a rogue app causing drain. For this use Samsung task manager or system panel.
Thanks for the info

Anyone know if it's possible to remove the TouchWiz 2.2 Task Manager via Titanium Backup for example (or another method if possible), without repercussions to the stability of my phone?.. If someone could answer this or direct me elsewhere it would be greatly appreciated. I figured I would use this thread as an opportunity to plug another question as I was also curious about the OP's question too.
I choose to use the advanced task killer on the market on auto kill, while I know it's not necessarily needed for Android with JIT I feel the freed memory launches apps more quickly. It might just be mental but it's always done good by me so I use it

Unless you're using Android 1.x, there's no reason to use a task killer.

I use it too and increased my battery life. Now I use only about 1% battery drain per hour of none use.
you dont need to remove it unless if its like a AUTO killer.
I keep ATK advanced task killer on my app list.
I mean who knows when a apps just gonna go crazy on me?
and the Android Task Manager doesn't see all the apps so... thats lame, i keep mine, but use it when a app is like freezing/slowing me down
Agree while in general task killers are not needed on 2.2+, there are some applications that still missbehave and need a force kill to function properly again. Personally I just use the stock Samsung task manager and widget, which does not mess with any system services.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
I hate atk, but I do use the task manager that is included in the roms I flash. I use the task manager ONLY when an application freezes or doesn't operate correctly.
I've removed mine through Titanium. If you're uncomfortable just freeze it.
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.
