Automotive In-dash Tablet - Galaxy Tab 2 General

I've been doing the whole in dash tablet thing for a few years now. I've used the nook color, HTC flyer, and other gingerbread based tablets. I bought a Galaxy Tab 2 p3113 and was super stoked about it- but have run into a major obstacle that so far cannot be solved somehow. I've spent months trying to figure this one out with no success.
CM9 or any ICS rom for that matter, at a lcd density of 160 on a 7 inch tablet is uncomfortably small, especially in a car. 240 has always been great in the car on GB roms. But considering the Tab 2 has no hard keys, at 240 the soft keys not showing correctly renders the tablet useless. Market apps like soft keys for root and gesture controls are a joke flying down the highway.
I've read and used some local.prop entries with no success. I'm stuck with either squinting at a screen or jumping through hoops to navigate around it. This seems so easy, yet a Google search brings up next to nothing. All I want is my car tablet to stay in tablet mode above a density higher than 160. Simple right? It was simple to do in ginger bread.

Agreed. I'm in the same boat. I have searched for hours and have come up with nothing.

i never really messed around with cm9 but in aokp(would assume they have some of the same things) u can change the nav bar stuff around have u guys tried any of that?

I'm using CM10 on my OG Galaxy Tab 7, on screen navigation enabled, and LEFT Navigation enabled (240 DPI of course).
Works great.
I bought a Galaxy Tab 2 to do the same setup with, but couldn't get the CM10 Developers to help me get the left navigation going, but it DID work just fine at 240 DPI.
I've been using this setup in my car for a year and a half.
Tablet mode is cute and all, but the bigger navigation in phone mode is better in my opinion. Also, the quick widgets in phone mode are much easier to use while driving in my opinion.

I tried CM10 a week ago or so and had the same problem as CM9 and the buttons messing up. Even when the bar shows to the right, the buttons go from left to right, instead of top and bottom. It is very strange. AOKP did nothing better either.
Since I have the thread open, I've had a few other minor issues that you guys may know something about: I set up Tasker to script wifi/bt/gps/sync on and off with power as well as screen timeout and wake lock on charge. This is to shut down everything with ignition off and wake it all back up with the ignition. For some reason this only works about 80% of the time. It almost seems like a deep sleep or an embeded task killer is destroying the scripts that Tasker is trying to run. There is really no rhyme or reason to it. Tasker just fails sometimes and either I go out to a dead tablet or a tablet that wont stay on.

I'm looking to get this SGT2 7" to put in my car dash. I'm not clear exactly what the issue is not having one yet, can anyone post screenshots of the issue or how the keys look? Or let me know if this is no longer an issue? I have not looked into various custom ROMs yet, just figuring out if this is going to work for my car at this point.

If your nav buttons are whats giving you trouble, get rid of them and use lmt launcher.

Nice alternative to sucky Samsung desktop dock app

I have the overpriced desktop dock accessory, and contrary to some others here, I really like it. This thread is not for arguing that point, please -- there are already several others where you can't vent your hatred of this accessory
Like others, I find the Samsung docking app buggy, crappy, and, after seeing the screen burn-in from some others, I got rid of it. Only tried it briefly anyway.
So, what to do?
Well, if you have tasker and the clock app from the Syndicate ROM (is that the stock clock app? I never tried it before Syndicate, so I have no idea), you come real close to achieving the same result -- i.e., have the app start when you dock, quit when you undock.
Two things I like most about the clock app vs. the Sammy dock app: It shows the local weather, and this can be set up to work off of GPS (if you want -- optional) so it's always local no matter where you are, and most important, it has a nice dim green time/date display after the device sleep times out that jumps around on a black background so there's no possibility of screen burn-in.
Now the one downside: Tasker doesn't seem to capture dock/undock events from Eclair on the Epic. These events are obviously there, somewhere, as the Samsung app can detect it.
So, a alternative must be used to detect the docking. I chose to use the AC Power state, as this is as close to narrowing down a state that is always "on" when docked.
I tried playing with adding some orientation conditions, but it turns out that when tilted back in the dock, it's neither "on left side" or "facing up" according to the sensor interpretation.
Anyway, this works very nicely. If anyone can come up with an even better context for tasker to further narrow the trigger to just docking, it would be much appreciated!
Of course, the ultimate solution is for tasker to correctely detect docking state on the Epic, for which I am going to write the dev.

Thinking about getting a Nook Color, have some questions first.

As many of you have likely already seen, the Nook Color is available for 179.99 today only (factory refurbished) at http://1saleaday.com/
I've been looking into getting a tablet lately, mostly for play - things like games, reading, and netflix. It seems like the Nook is a great "bang for the buck", and the devs have done some amazing work on it. I have a few questions before I take the dive though...
1. Battery Life.
How is the battery life while watching Netflix? While watching a movie on the SD-Card (let's assume 720P encoding). I notice that the Nook is rated at 8-10 hours with WiFi off, does that mean Wifi kills the battery, or just shaves off an hour or two?
2. Speed.
I understand that the Nook wasn't supposed to be a full fledged tablet, but the Devs have gotten some great ROMs for it that make it so. How is the speed? I want to make sure I'd use the tab over my phone when I'm at home, but my phone is actually quite fast (Atrix 4G, rooted, unlocked, running Alien2 with the OC kernel). Videos of the Nook with CM7 making it look very smooth with everything which is a huge plus (MotoBlur sucks, all animations on my phone are clunky... waiting for CM7 which is in alpha right now).
3. Gaming
I use my phone for moderate gaming, but it kinda sucks. I think that this will be my main focus on the Nook. Using emulators on my Atrix is a lesson a patience... The touch screen times out after 30 seconds of a finger being on the screen, so in games where you have to hold buttons a while, the screen becomes non-responsive. Because my phone's screen is small, it also makes playing a lot of emulators difficult as the buttons are on the screen itself. How do emulators run on the Nook? It looks like games from the market run just fine, which is great.
4. Shared Google account
My google account is tied into my phone right now, if I use the same account on the Nook, will I be able to install all of the same apps / games off of the market automatically?
5. Text Messaging
The Nook is Wifi only, so I know that Gtalk will work. What about SMS style messaging? Is there an app (or native in a ROM) ability to send / recieve text messages from the Nook while its on? This would make it so that I don't have to switch between devices at home in order to play games / watch a movie / whatever and talk to my phones.
Lastly.. what do you use your Tablet for? I know that I will play with this thing non-stop for a while, since its a new "toy". But other than running "old school" console games for a while (and Heroes of Might and Magic), I'm not sure what else I'd use the Tablet for considering that I own a very high end PC for gaming / programming, a MacBook Pro which sits on the coffee table in the TV room, an XboX for netflix streaming to the TV, and my much loved Atrix. I know that the tablet will be awesome while I'm playing with it and flashing ROMs, but from the experience of others... is it a passing fad for fun, or do you get a ton of use out of your tablet? If so, what do you use it for?
Any comments / questions are greatly appreciated. I've been looking into this for a few days, but now I'm on a time limit to buy the Nook on sale today, or wait for the next sale of a tablet.
DK
1) Battery life is amazing with the newer releases of CM7. I'm running 7.1 RC and left the wifi on when I finished charging it. After 24 hours in sleep I was only down 5%. After an hour use to update apps, browse online, etc, I was only down a few more percent.
2) Speed is great and just seems to get better with releases. Most people clock theirs to 1200 or 1300 (stock is 800) and run it daily like that. There is a lot of room to adjust for what you need/want.
3) I don't do a whole lot of gaming, but running something like Pocket Legends isn't a problem. I know some people are able to get Honeycomb only games running without problems. I think some require Tegra 2, so it shows how well this little thing performs.
4) Yes google account is shared. You purchase an app for your account and you can download it to both devices. The new market is device aware, so you may be able to purcahse and download to your phone, but not the Nook (if, for example, the app requires GPS), but there are ways around this.
5) I know SMS can be done, but I've never done it. Can't help here.
I love this little thing. For the price I don't see how you can pass it up. I use it for a little of everything: media, web, email. Probably the most use for me is having a nice little device to carry around documentation for work when I need to reference it.
If you have the money, thought about getting a tablet, and can do without camera, cell connection, it is definitely a great device to have.
I already have a NC but I went ahead an ordered one for the wife. She is a little jealous of mine so I figured why not for the price.
I use google voice to sms (can't call though without network), if you don't have a google voice account already, you can set it up, and connect it to your own phone number.

New A7 owner with a few questions please

An existing Asus Transformer owner who just picked up a factory refurbished A7 for $129 (let me know if interested in source). I really like this device - however, I did have a few issues for which I can't seem to find an answer for via search - wanted to see if someone could please help:
1. And way to enable the g-sensor fix without installing a custom ROM?
2. Any way to force wifi to stay on all of the time, so that I get alerted when new emails arrive instantly?
Thank you! Only rel drawback I see with this device is the lack of multi-touch, but other than games, I don't really use it much anyhow...

Factory firmware is crap period, your best bet is to load one of dexter mod, froyo, gingerbread or honeycomb rom, the dextermod 141 and patch 142 will solve both of your problem, 142 is by far the best thing that ever happen to the elocityA7..

Ok, thanks for your input. I was hesitant to upgrade to a custom ROM because they all seem to break bluetooth... But, I can't remember if dextermod breaks bluetooth or not. I think I'll start flashing away and checck out the alternatives out there (I also just realized that there is no ad-hoc support in stock firmware either).
Awesome little device though, especially for $129 - Same CPU as my Transformer in this little bad-boy! True honeycomb would be nice, be want do you want at this price level. Plus I saw that they are introducing the A7+ now, with true mutli-touch, higher-res, etc - so probably not much interest on their part in upgrading the original A7...
One last question - what about a TUN-capable kernel or the A7? Would love to be abe to VPN into my Cisco-powered office....
Thanks again!

Where did you source an a7 for $129? I was looking to pick up my first tablet and the best I've seen on a refurb is $169.

I can almost gurante you that no one who own the A7 will recommend the 7+, the reason i buy mine was to support an american company in pennsylvania, every time i call all they are intrested in is your personal info they never correct any shortcommings in their software if it wasn't for dexter this table would have die a long long time ago, i wonder what become of the 10" they were suppose to release..

- build.prop (ro.kernel.android.checkjni=false) enables Skype to function (and maybe other apps)
- usb stick support added.
- changed sdcard handler to stock, but with exception it only work until you eject sdcard/usb , and a reboot is only way to remount (or restart vold daemon which is from a shell)
- honeycomb bootanimation added.
- Files app added (for copying network files to tablet) is buggy with pictures handling in folders. (might be removed again)
- VPN (script + vpn settings enabled/added)
- HDMI resolution changer added in settings (480p -> 1080p output available)

Really? I was pretty impressed with this little device even with the stock firmware (especially for $129!). I might even consider the 7+ when it comes out. I owned a $250 B&N Nook Color and this is WAY nicer than that was!
Although, I do believe that Asus has spoiled me with firmware updates, etc - I've never seen a company support their products like Asus does - I love all of the constant firmware updates....

Where did you get the A7 for $129 ?. I just got one from 1saleaday for $149 and thought that was the best price around. I went back to 1saleaday for another one and like it says, it's for one day only. I would like to get one for my son at college since I think it is great once you put on Dexters Rom. Do you have a site????
Thanks Demi
Sure - you can get them @ MicroCenter for $129 everyday, BUT, I found that is an in-store only thing - can't order online. Not sure why they are so cheap, especially being sold @ retail stores! I'm wondering if they should have been $229! Shhh - don't tell anyone - I want to pick up another one for my son too! I originally bought this one for him for christmas, but I liked it so much that I decided to keep it!
So, unless you live close to a MicroCenter, the best I've heard of is $169 @ NewEgg I think it was....
Anyone know of a wifi keep-alive program that works with the A7? I want my wifi to be on 24/7 so that I get alerted instantly of new emails, etc... Besides that, I've found that it just takes way to long to reconnect and go through all of the new email checks, etc every time I turn the unit on it takes the A7 a few minutes to "get caught up" (system is too slow to use while this is occuring), which kind of defeats the purpose of "always on".
I've tried the CM7 setting to never turn off wifi, but it doesn't seem to work (wifi is still off when i turn the A7 back on).
This is the LAST stumbling block I've run into with the A7 - everything has been solved (ad-hoc, G-sensor fix, Market, TUN-capable kernel) - if I could fix this last thing I'd be really happy!
Anyone? Please?
Thanks in advance!
Unfortunately, tablet will turn off all connections if backlight = 0
The only way to avoid this problem is BackLightKiller. It turns backlight to 0.1 or less but not equal 0, so tablet will work and wifi will work
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=967931
Additionally you must use another app to restore WiFi it it suddenly turns off...
Interesting - I never had it be so hard to force wifi to stay on before on any other device - now I know why (disabled backlight=disabled network connections) - strange.
Thank you very much for the explanation and the workaround - I'll give it a shot today! Does it really destroy your battery life? I guess it would be nice if it were easy to swtich between always-on (w/backlight hack) and the default scheme - this way you could just "enable" forced-wifi whenever you needed it....
Thanks again - I'll give it a shot a report my findings!
Couldn't get BackLightKiller to work... I installed it on my A7 and when I run it, I just get a blank screen with the title "BackLightKiller" at the top. If I press the Menu button, I get an About and a Settings. I'm just not sure what I'm supposed to do with this app to make it work....
Has anyone got this app working on the A7 (and actually keeping wifi on during sleep)??
Thanks!

What do you want this app to do? This app only sets backlight to 0.1, so tablet consumes less energy, but still working and wifi is working, and you able to get email.
Nvidia was freaky when constructed first reference plate on tegra2 aka harmony.
When you pressing power - you pulling tablet in sleepmode like hibernite in microsoft windows. Even alarm stopping work and tablet does not receive any signals except power on.

That exactly what I want - everything on, but brightness set as low as possible. However, this app doesn't seem to do anything with the brightness... When I run the app, all I get is a black screen with a white title bar that says the name of the app. Is the screen supposed to go completely black when you run the app (by turning the brightness down)? If so, thats not happening with mine. The white title bar is at normal brightness and never goes away....

In our case we can not do more. Backlightkiller paints black on 95% display and it consumes less power definitely.
You can use Screen Filter from my list - it sets brightness.
I don't know more solution.

Interesting.... Oh well, thanks for your help! I'm not sure it uses any less power though, becasue the backlight is still at the same brightness, just a blank screen....
This is a major issue with this tablet for my use, which really sucks - I really liked this little thing! But, if it can't even tell me when I get a new email, then it's not very useful to me. Time to rebox it and give to it my 9-year old fr Christmas, I guess! Damn...
Do you think there is any chance the CM7 wifi-disconnect policy will ever work properly for the A7?
Thanks again!
EDIT: Ouch - it's even worse than I thought - even things like Alarms will not wake up the device in order to sound the alarm! Ugh! Surely, I'm not the only one that sees this as a huge usability issue?
Market Help?
I have the Elocity A7, have had it for a few weeks now, running Dexter's 142 update. Works great in every respect ( I can deal with the multi touch lack) except that I cannot get the Market to allow me to purchase apps. I can get the free ones all day long, but get an error every time I try to purchase one. I am using the same account as on my phone, which works just fine. I have tried installing the latest market update and cleared the cache for the market app, still not working for apps that require purchase.
Any ideas?

Gyroscope issue on nexus 7

Has anyone had any issues with the gyroscope? Is there anyway to recalibrate it?
When playing games I notice it veers to the left, for example temple run on a flat surface, character is running along left wall. I guess this could be an app issue.
Anyone else experience this?
Thanks
Does it use the accelerometer at all? If so, completely close the app, hold the tablet in the perfect "Centered" position, and re-launch. This will re-calibrate the app to the accelerometer.
I get an issue in Modern Combat 3 were within about a minute of play the character ends up looking at the ceiling very annoying. Tried recalibrating in app etc. but to no avail. Anybody else experiencing this?
Similar issue, I have to hold my device completely straight up before the screen rotates. Problem with the gyroscope maybe? But when I play games like Rip Tide GP, it works perfectly, senses every single movement, no matter how slight. I'd hate to have to return it, since this unit has no other issues .

I'm having the same issue!
Everything works fine except the screen rotation, which I have to hold the device completely vertical (or toward me) to make it rotates.
In games, it seems to work fine though.
I have no other issues, and would hate to return it back too.
Is there anything we can do to calibrate this?

Ditto here.
My case with stand sits at angle of 15-20 and when a new app is launched it fails to detect that it should be in Landscape mode?
Here's a demo of the issue:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIYzn54uN9Y
I had to recalibrate my compass to make it work right. There are instructions on youtube -- open an app that uses compass, etc. and spin it three times around on three different axes.
Don't know why, but some apps seem to have compass issues when others do not.

But it's not a compass issue. I downloaded a compass app for my N7, it works perfectly. Just can't get the screen to rotate unless it's held at a perfectly vertical angle.
I don't know if this is just me, but I'm so used to just kinda giving the device a little shake to point the gyro in the right direction (for landscape or portrait), so I haven't noticed anything weird.

I also have this. I've gotten used to the fact that I need to just quickly hold ot vertical. On a positive, I find my phone is too sensitive, and when I lay it flat on the table it sometimes switches orientation when I don't want it to, but obviously my Nexus 7 does not have this 'issue'.
I'd say mine rotates automatically at anything beyond say 30-40' from horizontal and while very slowly tilting it to that angle. I definitely do not have to bring it to anything near 90' for this to happen. I am not sure that I'd call it not rotating at 15-20' an issue other than one of sensitivity, and if it becomes overly sensitive it has a tendency to flip at the smallest movement/vibration, which occurs in a number of phones on different roms.
if anyone else is still having this problem I figured out how to fix it. Close the app/ game, then restart with tablet flat on a table or surface. That should reset it at center.
I have been having this problem since day 1. In temple run if i hold my nexus straight he runs down the right wall, i have to hold it about 25-30 degrees to the left to center it. Other games and apps exhibit the same problem. I have yet to find a solution. I have tried all the tips suggested here and even flashed back to stock. No luck yet.
I had an issue where the gyroscope endlessly turns towards one direction. Going to erase the tablet and see if that fixes the issue. Will report soon.
--update
erase and reset resolved the issue for me
I got my new one today (already have one with bad screen) and it has this problem.
Have to hold the tab directly facing me to rotate, games veering off to the right etc.
Calibrating with compass makes everything work until I remove it, then all screwed up again.
Been on to Google for a replacement
i'm developing a 3d augmented reality app and i tried it on my nexus 7 and after a few other apps that i tried that use the gyro it looks like google swapped the x and y axis or something. so it's not really a hardware error, but more on the software side...
edit: or maybe not. but there's definitely something going on with the gyro.
edit2: on further research it seems that the timestamp of the gyroscope sensor is broken, somehow i end up always getting the same timestamp. on my other android devices (galaxy nexus and galaxy s 2) this is not the case. if this is true (and my findings are correct) then this is definitely a bug that needs to be filed to google. can some other developer confirm this?
Hi,
I just started having this problem :crying: :crying: very sad with it.
It worked perfect since I received it a few days ago, then I locked (on the top bar) to use in an app and after I unlocked it it stopped working.
The behavior/test goes as follows:
- on the home screen, click on Chrome (or any other app that is supposed to rotate freely)
- turn landscape CCW, the app turns
- turn it back to portrait, the app does not turn
- back to home screen, open the app again
- opens in portrait
- turn landscape CW, the app goes landscape but upside-down (to be viewed as if it was turned CCW)
- tries rotating the app, it doesn't ever rotate again.
I would hate having to return it, but if it stays like that, I don't have other option.
------
edit:
I've just checked for games that uses the gyro:
Temple Run: the character is always on the right-hand side of the screen.
Highway Rider: although it's possible to turn the moto left, if I center the screen it will go to the right hand side
that's it,
just gave back to Carphone Warehouse (UK) and now I have to patiently wait for them to receive a new one so I can go pick it up.
I installed this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=imoblife.androidsensorbox app that left me without any questions that the accelerometer was not working horizontally on the screen (if you holding in portrait) :crying:
let's just hope that the replacement doesn't have any of the faults that we've been reading around the forum.
I found a "workaround". I installed the "Compass" application from Google Play and use the "Calibrate" option... and it solved the problem.
However, I need to re-do the same steps when I shut down and start my tablet again.
That's the best I found so far...
There is an app called GPS Status & Toolbox https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2&feature=search_result
It has a calibration tool and I had to run it a few times but once it got things working, it did stay that way even after shutting down the Nexus 7.
It even stayed that way after removing the app altogether but after altering the DPI to try tablet mode, it knocked the gyro off again so had to reinstall the app.
Such things really are just workarounds though and I certainly wouldn't consider keeping the device and having to keep messing like that.
Fortunately, my replacement has a perfectly working gyro.

Button Position

Hi Folks,
I am considering getting a G2. I mostly keep my phone in my jeans front pocket. I was wondering due to the button positions is there any issues with pocket dialling, waking up the screen etc if you keep it in your pocket?
Cheers,
Trev
I have the phone for a month or so, didn't have any problems regarding waking up the phone, starting apps or anything. Actually, this button setup makes it less likely for me to turn on the screen while getting the phone out of my pocket

No problem for me either. It's actually pretty handy because I can adjust volume through my pants pocket now.
To make stuff like this not happen, the threshold for how much force is needed to push down the button is maybe a bit high, the buttons are not super responsive. All in all I'm not over-excited about the whole thing, but they don't annoy me either.
Thanks folks. Are you happy with the G2?
I have had the phone for 2 months, I am a contractor, phone is in pocket all day long and I have never activated it in pocket. I am surprised, I actually am bending all day, putting pressure on that area, and it hasn't turned on.
Not problems whatsoever. If you are worried about it, just set up the lock screen for either a password, PIN, or pattern swipe in order to fully access the phone.

I've had numerous cell phones over the past 22 years, rooting / modding for the last several years, and most recently came from a Galaxy Nexus that must have seen many dozens of ROMs. The G2 is the best I've owned or used. The hardware button on the back is certainly different and takes a bit of getting used to, but it's fine where it is. I have a TPU case on my (Cruzerlite), and the cutout around the button makes it easier to locate the button by touch. Also - I've gotten to really like Knock On/Off -- I can easily use it one handed. So far, radio has been great, sound quality / calls excellent, battery life phenomenal. Screen superb. Fast, fluid -- and for the first time ever, I actually like most of the vendor skin: lock screen animations sync'd to weather (maybe it's the weather app? don't know) are very cool; unlock touch/drag is beautiful, windowed apps and qslide are sweet.
Much as I've insisted on Nova or Apex on other Android devices I like the stock LG launcher enough to be holding off so far. I love the view of the home pages that shows them on a carousel up top, with app / widget drawer below, so you can drag items right up and drop them on your chosen page (Next has something like this too -- very reminiscent!). I *love* being able to drag the corner of an app icon and have it transform into the appropriate widget. The *only* think I miss on this launcher right now is custom swipe assignments (one/two fingers down/up, etc) -- but I'm fine without for now.
The phone is a powerhouse and positively flies, even though the stock rom is still 4.2.2. Really looking forward to 4.4.2 on this. Might try it with Maladus ROM, or might just wait for official OTA. Truly superb phone. Extremely happy with it.
