So, I'm trying to use this tool to root/s-off my buddy's T-bolt. It connected to the tool fine and started up. I selected option 1, and is now stuck on the "rooter" section where it mentions static across the screen. This is on my VM. The drivers have been installed, and there is no other program that would connect to the phone. Any ideas?
***EDIT***
NM. . . I am a douchebag. I'm having to "allow" the phone back through USB on my vbox for everything to move through. . .

I made it through. I'm pretty new to VM's. . . and have DEFINITELY come across a few hateful hiccups trying to set this one up. All this while I'm still attempting to get used to the Ubuntu Unity toolbar!!!
Anyways, I gained S-off, but it didn't flash CWM or SU. Revolutionary got hung up on "rebooting to fastboot once moar". I should probably give up on this vbox and run it all through Linux since I do have S-off. . .
Regardless, awesome tool!!! Thanks for the huge improvement to this community!!!
-Paul T.

Uh yeah, trying to root and do other low level sophisticated stuff to your hardware from a VM is pretty suicidal. Just use a spare xp/Win7 box.
Anyway, major props to OP for being such a badass and making this. Also downloading to add to my arsenal.

Root JI6 (Froyo) by Swapping Kernels

For those among us who aren't terribly comfortable using the RageAgainstTheCage method to root this sucker there is an alternate method! This method DOES however require some familiarity with Odin, so if you aren't cool with that or if you have zero experience using key combinations or flashing I wouldn't recommend this.
Things you'll need:
JI6 Kernel
http://www.multiupload.com/FEJ1YHMM2I
JF6 Kernel
http://koush.tandtgaming.com//test/kernel-captivate-stock.tar.md5
Root via update.zip
http://www.multiupload.com/02RXSWORVC
And Odin of course (NOT THE ONE CLICK DOWNLOADER)!
http://www.multiupload.com/DLS7TWUVPY
1. Place the update.zip on your internal SD card.
2. Power down your phone
3. Boot into download mode and set up with Odin
4. Place the JF6 kernel into the PDA slot, and uncheck auto reboot, hit start
5. Once Odin has finished, remove your battery and close Odin.
5.5 Also remove the USB cable!
6. Put your battery back in, press and hold both volume buttons, and power on
7. You SHOULD be in stock recovery now, select "Reinstall Packages" the root update.zip should run.
8. As soon as the phone attempts to reboot, remove the battery, start Odin, use key combos to get back into Odin
9. Flash the JI6 kernel back to the phone
10. Profit!
Lovely post fellow name sharer

Why am I too entoxicated to flash my ****?! Zilch I blame you...

whoa...definitely a weird way to go about things, but also seems easier (for the average user) to successfully root.
on the other hand, i would be willing to bet a one-click will be up tomorrow (someone said they would do it, don't remember who).
anyways...like always zilch pulls through! nice job man
The reason you have to switch, is that the JI6 kernel enforces Signature Verification on update.zip packages, so using the root zip package fails horribly. However JF6 does not share the same opinions on unsafe update packages and will eagerly gobble up whatever you feed it

Did you dump the JI6 kernel your self? Do mind sharing a link or a quick PM on how you dumped this?

Actually credit goes to designgears for grabbing the kernel first, he beat me to root by about 5 minutes haha, I did however repack it for flashing myself =P But if you're interested in how to pull it, you need root first obviously, then from adb shell:
Code:
cat /dev/block/bml7 > /sdcard/zImage
Then you just have to pack it up properly to be "Odin friendly"

[ROM]GingerJane 1.3 - Sense 2.1/Gingerbread 2.3.4 - FixedSh*t Edition

Due to potentially dangerous problems with the Gingerbread leak radios, I have pulled my download links and suggest you go back to froyo.
As many know, I don't do real custom roms, just repacks of stock/leaks for users. Due to the bugs in the leak this is based on, I am unable to stay stock. I will do my best, and will list any modifications I use.
Wanna report a bug?
Did you do a data/cache wipe before installing? If no, please don't report.
Can you provide logs if it is a crash? If no, please don't report.
Did you do any modifications? New kernel? If yes, please don't report.
Otherwise please PM me details, with a log if available.

Gingerbread leak is alpha software, it is buggy. All roms based off it will be buggy. If this bricks your phone, it is your fault not mine. If it causes any harm, your fault not mine.
DOWNLOAD LINK REMOVED
Radio flash is not needed if you are upgrading from another Gingerbread Sense rom. Data/cache wipe is recommended.
Installation Instructions:
Download both the ROM and the radio.
Rename PG05IMG_gingerradio.zip to PG05IMG.zip and drop it onto the root of your SD Card.
Put mecha_gingerjane_1_3.zip onto the root of your SD Card
Boot into recovery
Do a Nandroid Backup!
Perform a factory reset
Flash mecha_gingerjane.zip, DO NOT REBOOT
Using ADB, reboot to bootloader
adb shell
reboot bootloader
If in fastboot mode, switch to bootloader mode and allow the updated radios to flash.
Enjoy!
Since everyone wants screenshots, here it is. It looks ...like...stock.

This question had to be asked at some point.

I would suggest trying out cyanogenmod 7 (link below) first to get used to flashing a new rom. The installation steps are quite straightforward and you will have lots of fun (!!) flashing all the roms on offer.

yeah now trying to unlock the boot--if any i"ll post here...thanks...
Remember to be very carefull when unlocking the bootloader, and flashing a rom for the first time, it can brick your phone. Good luck!
I'am also and noob, but this is what I did to instal CM7 Rom. Don't forget to back up your stuff.
Go through the instruction on this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871
Download from megaupload is not available, the alternate link is
http://www.mediafire.com/?x4m1ul78tzwsdmc
Follow the instruction.
After this download superuser from market and then root manager. Open root manager and select Flash ClockworkMod recovery, it will download CWM and CWM will be flashed. Open root manager again and select back up your current ROM, it will ask confirmation and then reboot and do its thing and again reboot. After that download the rom you want to flash and copy it to your internal SD card (don't unzip it, copy the zipped file). Go to the ROM manager and select Install rom from the SD card and select the rom you just copied. It will ask confirmation and then reboot and do its magic and you will have your ROM installed

[ALPHA][RECOVERY][2012-04-27] TeamWin Recovery Project (TWRP) 2.1.2 - Touch Recovery

Based off of my work in #twrp on irc.freenode.net documented at
Team-Win-Recovery-Project-Samsung
Team Win Recovery Project 2.1 for the Samsung Galaxy S Captivate
THIS IS AN ALPHA RELEASE
Install at your own risk! Be prepared by making a backup before installing and being prepared with Heimdall or Odin in case something goes wrong!

This has been one crazy week. I never imagioned going from TWRP2 as impossible on samsung devices, to a one click zip so fast.
Simply flash the zip below, you will have the exact same kernel as before, except with TWRP recovery magically replacing cwm.
This means that this can be flashed on CM7,CM9,AOKP,Gummy,CNA,etc regardless of whether you are using the stock kernel, glitch kernel, or anything else.
Note: You must be rooted and/or have a custom recovery already installed!
Disclaimer: Team Win strives to provide a quality product. However, it is your decision to install our software on your device. Team Win takes no responsibility for any damage that may occur from installing or using twrp.
Features:
Touch based recovery
Flash zips
Backup / restore roms
wipe cache,dalvik,/data
Misc.
Known Issues:
No usb support (adb, mount usb storage)
No /datadata support (can't backup or wipe app data)
reboot recovery broken (just reboots normally)
Report Problems:
I know there are a lot of problems as this is an ALPHA release.
However, it is still usable as a recovery, and a public release allows me to find and diagnose more problems.
So if you have a problem that has not been mentioned, post about it with a log, so that I may begin fixing it.
goto Advanced->Copy Log to SDcard
then upload /sdcard/recovery.log
Download: http://goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/captivatemtd
I hope the bugs will get ironed out, so this can become the best recovery for us captvate users (and next other SGS devices).
Enjoy!
Looks very promising. Will try out in the next day or so.
Thanks

I realize. I have been working on this for some time. I hang out in #glichbeta IRC and contribute to their dev work... So they have had access to this for a while, and have started integrating it into the glitch kernel, which is also in AOKP.
Go ahead and ask sixstringsg. They are my prebuilts I shared.
Anyways, this has a few advantages. Ex: you can still run stock cwm, then flash this over your kernel to test it out. Instead of being 'forced' into using something before it is perfected.
So far the only problems I find are that b34 essentials is only half way flashing. TWRP doesn't like the morphing script. And butter cream does not work at all with TWRP.

Guys, Smasher816 and Sixstringsg are good friends and work together. Smasher isn't stealing anything. Slow your roll dudes. Be grateful that there are great devs working for this phone still.

You'd think that the banner in his sig that say "Glitch Developer" should be a tip off.

They do. It's called, "If you can't read the OP, one-Click your way back to stock because you're not ready for custom ROMS"
You know what? I think ima put that in my sig lol.
Though we should probably try to make our way back on topic. I mean, TWRP with any kernel? Awesomesauce.

Has anybody tried this yet? What's the results?
Alright. Lets call the arguing done, and just talk about the recovery.

Can you get me a log from /tmp/recovery.log
Or by going to Advanced -> Copy log to SD, and uploading /sdcard/recovery.log

It is stable enough for me. If you don't like it you can reflash a different kernel to get CWM back.

I have tried it. I updraded AOKP, flashed gapps, flashed glitch kernel. Made a backup, restored a backup - all fine.
However, as with every one else, I encourage you to give it a shot. The more testers, the better.
I am loving this recovery. Great job. Keep up the great work. Been waiting for this to come to the captivate.

Frog_ligux rom 11/26/2012

This is a port of Cyanogenmod7 with LiGux and Coopoui launcher based off of port done by ajrty33http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433957 and a base of gin-tazz by tazzpatriothttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1040459.
This rom is very stable and fast which surprised me since it is my first attempt.
I have squashed all bugs I could find prior to release but if anybody can find any more to squash I would appreciate it.
Also any suggestions of new things to add to this rom would be great or of course anything that you think is wasteful and should go just let me know.

Thank you and I have to say that your work is what conviced me to try my hand at this.
Installing Ubuntu on my computer right so that I can run a kitchen and hopefully achieve some of the customization that I want on my current rom.
The Eris is a great phone to learn with creating roms.
Will have my boy try it out!

Sorry about the missing audio file updated link with all the audio files included but that should not cause the install to be aborted instead it causes the default ringtone to be silent.
What kind of error are you getting upon install and are you using CWM or something else????
I received the same error and the installation aborted. I am running CWM recovery. This is a play phone, so there is no urgency. I have a rezound as my daily phone.

Can confirm, fails on Amon-Ra installs nicely with CWR.
Seems nice so far. Thank you for this ROM. I just had to pull my Eris out of retirement as a garage door opener to use for my daily driver again.
thank you everyone
Big thanks to everyone sorry that it does not work on amon ra just never thought to test it on there because I have always just used CMW. I will do some research to figure out why it has the problem on amon ra but if anybody has some ideas it would be greatly appreciated.
PS. I am going to upgrade sometime soon but was thinking of releasing a stripped down rom designed to make the eris a kids toy no call, sms or 3G would anybody be interested in that or should a just share it with my kids.
PSS. Any other type of rom that anybody would be interested in seeing on the eris MIUI, windows phone ect.
I'd love that Frog. When my contract is up again, i plan on reexamining my phone carrier. At that point the Eris will become a dedicated garage door opener using the GarageMate app again. I was using the MP3ROM before, but options are always nice. It's great to have a garage door opener that can double as an MP3 player,GPS unit(using Copilot), and so much more.
PS. loving this so far. It is really snappy and I haven't had one major issue yet. Big thanks for your hard work on this.

Cool as soon as I have time I will start working on the play rom.
PS. the guys that deserve the thanks are the ones who did the hard work of actually making the roms and kernels. I just port and theme but your encouragement is greatly appreciated.
