I'm sorta interested in this because it could mean a lot more branded franchises coming to PS-Certified devices, but at the same time, this could mean Sony Ericsson's awesome ad campaigns (ex: Kristen Schaal <3) would be replaced by *big Sony's* traditionally ****ty counter-productive ads, alongside their awful marketing decisions and insane limitations.
Sony Ericsson provided a LOT of liberty with the Xperia PLAY that probably wouldn't fly with *big Sony* in control.
Unknown Sources was an option without any kind of fight, we got a standardized expansion media format, standardized connection cable, access to the official market... I'm just sayin', would it surprise anyone if this takeover meant our oh-so desired "Xperia PLAY 2" came with some piece of **** proprietary cable? ...or outrageously-priced proprietary memory, some atrocious marketing, total bootloader lockdown with the stock ROM stripped of it's unknown sources option and forced integration far more intrusive than anything we ever got with TimeScape?

Love kristen schaal. xD I made my face, out of dirt, pretty good for a dirt face.
Not sure how I feel, sure we'll still see great xperia phones either way. Might just see them differently if sony decides to change the advertising.

You can see straight away Sony is going with power, But yeah I can see Sony devices taking over imo, Sony Xperia S is pretty cool imo, I want it lol.

From the looks of things with the S and P tablets, none of this has appeared. Bar the non-standard design, they have played it fairly cool.

I think them tablets and don't have bootloader unlock (just got root) but you don't need bootloader unlock unless you want to flash a custom kernel.
My idea: Same workers, same people, same initiatives, maybe they dropped the "E" in SEMC, but it is still pronounced almost the same SMC LOL.
Anyway, previous phone was a HTC Wildfire (I loved it - apart from limitations and bootloader locked without OFFICIAL unlock method for two years) and it was okay. My next phone will be a samsung or HTC, maybe the Xperia S, but not if it has a hidden boot partition and no recovery partition - I need these to flash kernels on the go and also to get into recovery...
Although, I don't know, I will probably keep my play for another year and a half or so
A second phone would be nice though
Keiran

I don't care as long as they don't start sue-ing people for rooting our phones. lol.

it was always Sony at the reigns anyways, so not much will change i think.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 user experience and stuff

Hi all,
today I got a X10 unit (here in Croatia there was a press conference) and X10 come with localized Android 1.6 Cupcake operating system.

I just put battery in side and connect to Internet.
Device is great, solid construction (I also have HTC Legend), it is fast, but without multitouch
Can you, please, confirm the presence of AWS (WDCMA-IV) 1700MHz band support?
BTW Android v1.5 was Cupcake, your X10 is running Donut.
PS: I don't give a flying f*ck about multitouch, it's a classic gimmick with no use for me - I prefer to be able use my phone with one hand instead of having to perform some two-handed gymnastics nonsensical gymnastics, only to gain nothing but lose safety when, say, I'm riding a train or driving a car or walking with my daughter holding her hand.
Tnx for correcting me, so where can I check AWS?
Well, I am playing with X10 for few hours, and I think that the main problem is 1.6 Android, in comparation with Legend (which I have) it is slightly slower. This can be seen in putting widgets.
What you see is the "Donut lag" - it is a common problem among Donut-based devices.
After someone releases a 2.x port it should be gone.
Well, we will sit and wait and I will continue to use my HTC Legend, hope to see upgrade rom from SE on 2.1
I know they will, it's only the question of when...
Retail version review from Stuff Mag:
anyway, they say that SE UI is pretty laggy...
Congratulations on your new device beetleman! Glad to see you went with an excellent choice. Hope you can include some more pictures soon.. Have you tried changing the background at all?
Thanks but I won this device and also HTC Legend, last week (what can I say, best week in my life- HTC Legend was in press conference, and SE Xperia x10 on SE event- I am ICT yournalist and editor in chief of Croatian e-zine about smartphones).
So I am very lucky, but as I said, it is good device, with big potential, so in comparation with Legend, Legend has smoother UI (HTC Sense) and implementation of services, but all thanks to 2.1 Eclair, so we wait update on X10.
Today I got him, so I will play with him a while, so we will se how it goes..
my main concern is TFT screen, because AMOLED screens are much better.

Ouch! I cannot watch this: her nails are truly disgusting... what a nasty, unattractive girl.

[Q] Are you going to buy another sony-eric**** product?

I see lots of mistreated and tortured owners of Sony X8 phones.
People bought them in hope to replace old phones and use as main device.
So far NOBODY can use this phone as their main device.
The 2.1 firmware .504 was made same time when X10 was released, but we did not get it, only to receive the root-impossible .47 version !!!
I am sure this was my last purchase from sweden (yes, no ikea, no volvo and no stinky swedish fish for me from now on).
Are there more people feeling like me ?
Tell ericshits what we think of them, show your support for boycotting sweden and their stupid eric**** employees.
Nothing good ever came from sweden anyway (except Abba, long time ago)
Personally i'm quite satisfied with my X8, I bought it as a toy and to experiment with rooting, since i didn't want to risc bricking my X10. I now use it as a 3G modem with great success, but since it's the cheapest Android phone available in my country by a margin of 20% under the nearest HTC phone, i never expected much from the X8.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
I use it for everything and I am satisfied w/o rooting. It's my sixth SE phone
Your poll is extremely bias. Basically what you've done is said
Do you like Sony Phones?
-No

-No
Not everyone is going to agree with you.
And yes, I've always been happy with Sony Phones. I agree, however, that their decision to keep an android phone locked down is stupid, though.
Android is opensource... user can customize own phone... sony is ****... they lock android... i will sell my phone with the best buyer.. HTC i'm coming..!!! i use sony phone about 3year. i like walkman.. user can customize walkman phone.. sony ****..!!!
Development forums are not made for this kind of questions.

Its realy good phone. It have everything from android to gps,wi-fi,bluetoth and is cheap. You are crazy men.Why you are buy phone if you dont like it.

Yeah, dat's right. At least they gave us an 2.1 update, right?

I'm using x8 as a main phone, and i had waited it since august. I like Sony phones-the best phones.
I have a Sony Ericsson P910i. This phone was a brick. My friend, Kristian used it as a work phone. It was dark red when I got it. Kristian was painted it. I cleaned the whole device and assembled it as a brand new hammer.
Now I have an X8. Akku is **** but that is the only benefit of Android phones. My GPS flying, Android 2.1 flying as well. I need the root only or hacking the bootloader. That is only 11 more days. I can wait.
I am handling this device as a finger friendly computer. I do not brake it as Kristian but this phone lives as the fish in the ocean.
Not too keen about such a biased poll... thought I'd balance it a bit.
I'm happy about my x8, but I do realize that I would be even more happy with an android device from another manufacturer. For me, its not a phone, it's an android device. How well it performs as an android device is alpha omega. Manufacturers that don't provide updates to most recent version ASAP, are simply cut from my list of potential buys in the future.
I have no anger towards SE. I am happy about my phone. Next time tho, it won't be an SE, unless they convince me they got their stuff together and realize that its no longer about the phones, but about running android well. I'll simply look elsewhere.
Manufacturers who still think they sell phones (SE, Nokia), will have a hard time competing with companies who sell devices (HTC, LG, Samsung).
Stupid thread.Go home and cry.Dont waste our time here please.

[DISCUSS] Potential next phone? Sony's Xperia Play (PSPhone) is coming to Verizon.

http://www.wirefly.com/learn/resour.../sony-ericsson-xperia-play-vs-apple-iphone-4/
It looks like the playstation phone will be on big red. I was going to wait until year's end and pick up whatever dual core monster is out there that i really like, but with the exception of this phone only being single core, it does have a lot of what I wanted anyways and more.
1. two cameras
2. Android 2.3
3. Playstation controls
4. Newly announced Playstation Network store/studio or whatever the Android link up is called.
I think this will be a great phone.
Anyone know any history of the sony android phones? good/bad/unrootable/etc?

Xperia Play Confirmed for Verizon
Xperia Play just got released at Sony's Ericsson's MWC conference and it's confirmed for Verizon and start shipping in March! Unfortunately specs haven't be released yet and it's still made by Sony Ericsson, .
But i'm not going to lie, I'm kind of excited and want it to do well.

Neat, thanks for the info.

"Sony held the Sony Ericsson's MWC 2011 press event today, where they finally revealed the long-rumored PlayStation-inspired phone. Labeled the Xperia Play, the device utilizes Google's Android Gingerbread platform, is "PlayStation certified," and is on the Verizon Network.
"This Spring, expect to see a lot of people with their heads down and thumbs up," said Sony Ericsson's marketing head for North America, Peter Farmer. "Xperia Play combined with the power of the Verizon Wireless network gives you everything you need in a smartphone and the one thing you want – the ultimate gaming experience."
Due out this March, the phone will launch with 50 downloadable titles, play PSN games, and eventually be able to host original PlayStation titles. Sony's Kazuo Hirai teases that the phone will come pre-installed with a "legendary PS One title." My money is on Final Fantasy VII. The Xperia play will also come with Asphalt Adrenaline 6, Bruce Lee, Star Battalion, The Sims 3, and Tetris already on it.
Other games will include EA's FIFA series and the Android version of Dead Space. The phone is capable of utilizing Epic's Unreal Engine. Sony is also partnering with Unity Technologies to bring their Unity Engine to the Xperia Play. Approximately 350,000 games exist that utilize this engine, and this tech would allow those titles to be ported to the device.
Other stats:
-60 frames-per-second via the Snapdragon 1Ghz processor
-Adreno 205 graphical processor
-4-inch multi-touch display
-Four-way d-pad
-Alphabetical keys
-Left and right shoulder buttons
-Dual analog touch pads to mimic analog sticks
-5.0 megapixel camera"

Sony Ericsson's new Xperia Play smart phone may be supported by PlayStation games, but that doesn't mean that existing fans will have a leg up if they buy the phone.
GameSpot talked to Nathan Vautier, managing director of Sony Ericsson UK and Ireland, who admitted that any content previously purchased through the PSN store will have to be re-bought for the phone. "[Xperia Play owners] will have to re-purchase games, so it's not totally integrated."
One of the advantages of the Android-based phone is its ability to play PlayStation titles, and the phone will launch in March with 50 games available. Sony is already teasing that the device will come installed with a "legendary PSone title.

I Have the game informer mag. It says the PSone title will be Crash Bandicoot.
It might be coming to AT&T as well. I know Rogers is getting it up here in Canada, and we're DEFINITELY NOT CDMA. It would only make sense for AT&T to pick up the GSM version as well, but what do I know?

I have the X10, it was rooted.
Sony had a hard time with updates (untimely/didn't give us basic features/said features were impossible) but in all honesty they have done ok with updates...
We ended up getting 720p with the 2.1 update (long after 2.2 was out, we got an old OS Sony claimed was better than stock 2.2), we ended up getting glitched dualtouch after Sony told us it would never happen, and most recently they announced we will be getting 2.3.3 later in the year.
They say with the way Sony built their 2.3 ROMs they can provide more timely updates because they left it closer to stock Android.
Sony's support is really odd, they aren't truthful, they are behind the competition, but they do seem to work on the phones, they will probably update, I just don't know how timely it will be.
The Play looks promising, but the ROM will probably feel sluggish and don't count on Sony for anything wonderful, that will come from XDA Devs.
But I give Sony credit, they appear to be moving towards a more open concept with the new lines, they are unlocking the bootloader so updates will happen, from them or XDA, it will happen.
Latest rumor is that the Verizon version will be stock Android, and even the engadget preview of the Verizon version is stock android. The bigger question is whether the Verizon version will have a locked bootloader...
I am chomping at the bit for this phone!
yet we still have no info and date and price

Aww Someone is jealous of Xperia Play ,and he is so pissed at us, calling us suckers
Actually, I made the image. I hardly can be accused of being jealous of XPlay owners, but I feel that the phone has been brutally abandoned. I guess my sentiment isn't shared among the userbase...
No, it's not, and you look the fool.
With Gingerbread as standard on the phone I'd say SEMC is good for a while, the majority of other phones that are out now, including some just hitting the market don't even have that.
We're still waiting for Sony to come through with Playstation Suite, I'm guessing that will be a vital part of the appeal to Playstation Certified devices. In the meantime, it's a prime opportunity for developers of Android games to step up with the new coined "Xperia Play Optimized" label.
I'm not sure what more you want SEMC to do?
come on guys its just a stupid joke
we all have to be able to laugh at things in life
if they dont want a xperia play then thats fine who cares
its all dual core this dual core that
but at the moment dualcore is only good for one thing benchmarks!
there hasnt been a game that is designed only for a dualcore phone that
are phones cant play aswell
and lets be honest that why we all got a play, to play games
so who really cares if there apps fire up hundreds of a sec faster than ours
or when u browse the homes screens etc, theres is abit smoother?
we got our phones to play games and play them comfortably
and our phones do that better than theres.

Releasing a working PlayStation Suite on arrival, so that we can, you know, play games properly? Following a non-retarded bootloader policy? Updating our phones with interesting GAMING-RELATED content?
I agree with the Playstation Suite stance. They mention it every now and then but in no detail whatsoever.
But again, that's not SEMC, that's being developed by Sony (SCE). Different people.

No. I bought the phone for the emulators

With the pending release of ION, does that mean no more controller buttons? :-(

I love my Xperia Play because of the actual buttons. Touch screen controls are good, but nothing beats tactile feedback. For simple games, touch screen controls work just fine, but the Xperia Play wasn't a simply gaming phone device, it was able to play all my N64 games, and PSX.
With the release of the Ion Play, does that mean the end of our beloved buttons?
The Ion is the new American flagship for Sony Ericsson. It's not going to replace the Play, it's out because Sony didn't have any carrier-backed flagship in the US (the Arc wasn't available with carrier subsidies). It's not going to phase out the Play or anything.

It is not "Ion Play" its just simply "Ion" its not a 2nd Xperia Play or as such. All Sony devices will be Playstation Certified.
My understanding is that they support the use of Playstation 3 SIXAXIS/DualShock 3 controllers.
I find it very stupid that every new regular Sony phones are getting the "PS Certified" tag without the actual gamepad. Its a promotion skill but at least make some effort like in the original XPlay. For example I love the new Sony Xperia S but how is it a PS certified ?
Sent from my R800i using MIUI
They want to create a gaming ecosystem for mobile gaming, which is not a bad idea. However, no one else is biting the hook, and it would be nice to have more choices for gaming than Sony's phones. Imagine some PS certified Galaxy S III or a Nexus Tablet made by Sony and PS certified. That'd certainly kickstart the ecosystem's popularity. It would damage Sony's hardware sales too, but since they're making a loss with them, it wouldn't be that big an issue.

Its not all about playing on a tiny screen with tiny buttons all the time. Tablet S already has official sixaxis controller support for ps suite and we think sony mite roll this out over the hole ps certified device range like you see sony demoing with the ion here below, so there is a point to certified device's.
To see this concept in action check out this custom xperia arc we made with full ps suit early here http://www.xperiagamer.com/News/xperiagamers-plarc.html
