Can I use an extended battery? - HD2 Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting an

Hi,
I've installed WP7 from Yuki/XboxMod but is it possible to use this battery:
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/2600ma...tery-battery-cover-case-for-htc-leo-hd2-91228
The biggest one?
Or is it better to buy this 2 pack?:
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/replacement-3-7v-1350mah-battery-for-htc-hd2-pair-103568
I need to buy a new one because I can't do one day with it..
I've heard that some rom's does not work with it.
Greetz,
Kevin

I bought similar extended battery, but failed to gain any significant increase in battery life. I am using Xbmod/Yuki BTTF ROM. Even if I charge with external charger, the phone doesn't seem to recognise the extra capacity.

you can use the bigger battey and use an external charger, that will give you a full charge, to use it you just pop the battery out and restart the device when it reports low, that usually works at least it does for mine anyway
course if you got an cradle with external charger then you can buy a couple of batteries an keep some spare

HTC Extended Battery
Hi guys,
I'm planing to install WP7 on my HD2 but I don't know if the original HTC extended battery is supported once I intalled WP7 on it.
I see that you were talking about some others extended batteries but the one made by HTC self. Is it supported?
Thanks in advance

I have the genuine HTC HD2 EXTENDED BATTERY, BA E400 2300MAH myself, and use it in substitution with regular battery...
Yes it'll work but your battery status readings will be incorrect i.e. the charge status bar in top right corner. However, the battery will last about twice as long as the stock one, but your batt status would be on low for that matter or as the guy in post somewhere above suggests, you can restart the phone when the indicator is low and get back accurate batt. level reading.
With that being said, EVEN THE GENUINE BATTERY WON'T CHARGE WHEN IT'S IN USE/IN THE PHONE. You're going to need external charger or charge it in Android (dual boot).
Good Luck!

Re : the 2 pack deal with external charger
aM i right in saying they cannot be charged when in use??
Would this have any repercussions with the genuine battery? Ie charging when in use?

thanks for all your response. the reason i asked this question is: usually when we use a laptop we can always use an ac adapter without pulling out the battery, which is harmless to the the battery life! but coming to pocket PC, i just wondering when you use the ac adapter, the battery will always be charged and the machine will always use battery's electricity, not from ac adapter directly. won't that be bad for the battery life??
sorry for my silly speculation.

actually the battery they use don't have that much of the battery memory effect, so you should be ok with these. The only problem you will face is battery capacity decrease over the time, so in my case, i usually change the battery after a year use (which doesn't cost that much compare to the laptop one ).
Hope this helps

If your battery is bad and you try to re-flash, you will brick your device (since it will probably stop flashing about half way through - happened to me with my Wizard). Your best bet is to get a new battery... they are rather cheap either on eBay or Amazon...
From your message, everything points to a bad battery...
Good luck!
Thanks for replying
Hey
what do u think the probable problem due to which the battery got BAD?
i am using it from 1.5 years and this problem occured after that BATTERY DRAIN while i was using S2U2 2.33!
so what would be the problem as i mostly have to charge my battery from 60% twice a day so charging many times would be a problem
What do u suggest due to my big usage? Should i buy a extended BATTERY
But i want to tell u that i will take a extended battery if it fits only in the original case i dont want to buy a new case
So tell me the best option to get it also could u send me a link to buy it
it would be great thanks in advance!!!!

It could be that the battery just died on the spot... I don't believe (or at least have never heard of such an issue, let alone related to S2U2. The fact that you've had this for 1.5 years suggests that you bought it used, which means that the battery might be much older than that.
An extended battery will not fit with the original back cover. I believe that there was one (1500 mAh, I think), that it is supposed to fit, but I am not sure.
Just buy a stock battery and you will be in good shape.
hey i took a new battery still the problem occurs
It twice charged till 100% now does not charge above 70%
Same problem here
I am using Blackstone with official ROM. Its a new one. Less than one week old. Its battery is not getting charge more than 55%. Why so? I kept it on charger for one FULL night. But still its not charging above 55%. Please give me a solution for that.

Don't double post. Also, you are in the wrong section. This is for Vogue (HTC Touch and not Touch HD). You should head over to the Blackstone section and see if someone can help there.

It probably has nothing to do, but what is the output of the charger that you are using? Also, 70% is enough (specially if it is a new battery) to flash a rom. Flash the device to something else and see if that solves the problem.
hey thanks for replying
I got the charger which i go from TELUS & by the way i took the phone new from TELUS and its now 1.5 yrs i took a new battery as u said but still the problem occurs my new battery charged to 100% twice but now it does not chage above 70%
charger is having rating output- 5V - 1A
if u say to change the ROM then which u prefer
I AM USING NFS FAN V17

Anything really, even flash the same one you have if you want to. Just make sure that your battery is charged as much as possible. If I am correct (and I think I am), it is a problem with the battery meter in WM, and flashing will tell WM that whatever your battery level is at that point will represent 100%. Give it a go and remember to back up your stuff before doing this. Good luck!
did the same but i think the problem is wid charger
coz the battery charges with the USB connected with computer
but the orange light comes when connected with charger but battery does not charge
but if the problem is wid charger then i dont think that the battery should charge in mobile off condition???

Try a different charger then. The battery will not charge if the device is off.

[Q] 3rd party hd2 battery & android?

Hi, i've read over at the android development thread that some users of 3rd party battery are unable to boot into android from winmo due to certain limitations of the kernel in recognizing the battery (possibly similar to extended hd2 batteries). as i'm looking to get another battery to be a spare to bring on the go, i would like to verify the claim with fellow hd2 users..
my question is this:
To all 3rd party battery users, who have successfully booted into android from their 3rd party battery and brand of the battery (if any)?
hope this will help me and every1 else looking to purchase a 3rd party battery to use as a spare battery since it would suck if it cant be used for android..

I just ordered one from ebay it is a cameron sino, or somthing like that. it is a 2400mAh. I will let you know. I also read somewhere that if you cover up the gold pin that senses tempature then the phone will boot, but since i dont have a extended battery yet i can neither confirm nor deny. Either way i will let you know in a couple of days.

I have two 1200 mah batteries that I swap out with the original batteries. No problems here except I never hit 100% full charge.
see here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756513
this kernel has the option to disable tempchecking so any battry can be used, it has a ton of other awesome features too like overclocking
I have 2 3rd party batteries and I've had no issue with booting into or running Android.
Mine both 100% charge.

Same, however they are similar to the original battery.
Mine are Andida batts.
Thanks every1.. will update the 1st post layet to include the stuff u guys mentioned.. about the special kernel which ignores battery temperature, is it for extended batteries or is it for normal sized batteries as well?
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
Ok I just got my extended battery from ebay, I popped it in and loaded Android. And it worked. It booted into android with no problems. If you want to purchase one like mine I have a previous post and I provided a link. The back cover protrudes a bit but is not in the way at all. I like it. I will buy probably 3 more of this exact one.

Does anyone know if it is possible to power the HD2 from the micro USB supply while I swap batteries. I don't want to have to do a soft reset which loses what you are doing. But I'm worried that without the battery to absorb the power there is a risk of damaging the circuits?
I don't want to just try it because I already blew my main board by powering the USB through a cheep adapter and a Nokia charger that supplied too much power and had I to get it repaired/replaced. I'm hoping someone already knows.
Sam
I bought the 2400 mah extended battery for $21.99 and it booted right into android fine but the new back cover didn't fit my phone very well. So I bought HTC's extended battery 2300 mah with back cover and kickstand on back cover it was much more expensive $71.99 with priority shipping from clove UK. I got it put it in and it would not boot into Android. I had to use the special kernel and then voila all is well. Thanks to XDA and the people who put all the hard work into these projects. I love my HD2 with dual boot and extended battery and it even has a freakin kickstand now LOL!
I've owned the eBay 2400 or 2600 extended battery since I got my phone months ago and have had no problems at all with using Android with it. Just yesterday I decided to swap for the stock battery though, mostly because I absolutely love how sleek the HD2 is with the stock battery.

Extended battery may not be supported in the kernel level. You would think this is a hardware issue, but the OS needs to know how to manage power; hence, if it can't properly read the extended capacity it won't know how to charge it. This is my understanding, though. The same problem exists for Android roms.
I was surprised to see the extended battery to work, but doesn't charge. The only solution is to charge the extended battery on a charging bay while you use the regular battery during the night. Then, change the battery back to the extended battery when it's complete. Charging bays are cheap anyway, and handy thing to have for situations when you could use both batteries.
We can dream for a fix from DFT
I also have this problem with my extended battery. I wouldnt mind except you cant even charge the battery while the phone is off meaning its useless until I can get a charging bay.
I was just about to get a 2600mah extended battery for my Leo because of high drainage from Android and WP7. Good thing I saw this post. I'll wait for this to hopefully be fixed.
The same problem of battery(drum kit) as you, no solution!!!!!
So let me get this straight.
1) Extended Battery won't charge through the phone but will through a charging bay.
2) When EB is in the phone it will be used as normal with the extra capacity.
Yes/No?
Is original from HTC?
Thanks
I have been using the NON-HTC extended battery from ebay. It works, charges and lasts. I would think the HTC EB may not work because of the need for specific drivers that are not present in WP7 kernel.

[Q] Rom WP7 with battery official HTC 2 300mah

I buy a HTC 2300mAh battery. But it does not load, the LED flashes red / green.
There is a rom that works with this battery on WP7?
Thank you for your answers.
Q/A would have been the right place for this post.
Your phone looks like a talkie walkie now ;D
Those "non official" batteries are often not compatible.
Thanks Dad57.
This is an official battery buy on htc.com
So? No ROM is yet available for this battery?
So if it is an official one, every rom would charge this one.
Tried on wm6.5?
it wont get charged works fine for android but quits at the use of wp7 - which means - runs out wont charge in wp7
i have one of these and cant use them here!
I don't understand why people always complicate their life to charge the phone by pc.
Check this out! http://cgi.ebay.de/Battery-AC-WALL-...114546?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3f06ce2bb2
Just put your battery in and that works, because there is no rom which can affect the charging progress .

but even if it charges, it wont be read correctly so you wont get the extended battery recognized
I also have the official HTC HD2 BP E400 Extended Battery (2300mAh) and frankly, the only way that you can get the extra life out of it in WP7 is with external charger. I bought mine from ebay for less than $10.
Despite some claims above that WP7 Rom will not take an advantage of extra charge I have experienced otherwise. The phone will drop the indicator in the same manner as if it runs on the standard battery, but the extra charge will keep it going right at 1/4 charge for pretty much 1+ day of normal use which cannot be said about standard battery .
Bottom line is, you need external charger (or dual boot with Android as I did before purchasing the charger) which will consequently pay off also as your standard battery charger due to no current ROM being able to deliver full charge with them either. Just go for it and finally get full WP7 experience going.
Hope this helps
