Ice Cream Sandwich and other News - Droid X General

Today I have an anouncement.
I will be doing all MIUI development for the X, D2 and D2G. Also, I will be making an update for my barebones CM rom once a month from here on out. Lastly, I will be working on an Ice Cream Sandwich rom from the SDK later this week to have something ready for when source drops. As for my Milestone 2 rom, I am probably going to release what I have and see if someone else can figure out how to get data working with it. I do not have a job where I can constantly be SBF'ing my phone anymore and that rom was the fastest way to break the phone. I still am planning on working on a sense port but that will be far down the road after ICS is out.
Secondly, Since I am working on so many devices right now, expect delays to be there but things still coming out at least. I am taking donations to get my thinkpad working again (since it got killed) that way I can have 2 dev machines. Any phones I can get will help too. Whether it be an X, D2G or D2. Simply put, I don't have enough hardware right now to crank them out very fast and I am asking for donations to expedite releases. I am posting this in the X forum since I will be developing for that device now.
I appreciate anything you guys have given to me before (you guys kept me afloat during my unemployment). I look forward to be doing more releases, but if you guys have anything left to give... It will make this much faster for me. Developing with my phone I use has just become almost out of the question.
Edit: ICS will be my primary rom in development until we get it running. Once DXC does his last release I will be doing just maitenence releases for MIUI.

Looking forward to Ice Cream Sandwich and your MIUI releases on the Droid X =D

let me know if you need a beta tester for DX.
I don't mind sbf'ing a few times a week (day?) to help the cause.

wait to see your nice work!

waiting for good news..thanks

I am REALLY looking forward to what can be done with this! Making any progress?

Evervolv vs OMGB ((GINGERBREAD vs 2.3)) ROMS

Alright, my first thread EVER.
First off, I'd like to say thank you to all of the developers on this forum.
Everyone does amazing work... and I hope to be able to contribute one day soon.
So I claim no credit for any of the work I discuss in this topic.
As for now, I've been tapping my toes for Gingerbread, as many of you may have been as well. I have, though, in the meantime trying out some of the ROMs released by developers ( Evervolv | GRH55/Android 2.3.1 | v1.0.0a15 | [released by preludedrew] && OMGB v5 (Android 2.3) [released by R2DoesInc )
Since the initial release, I have run on either / or of these ROMs and not had to revert back except about twice. They both run great in my personal opinion, and I'm sure there both still being worked on. But I found myself asking which one I should leave flashed?
I said I liked the feel of OMGB 5 initially, vs the Evervolv v1.0.0a13 - Gingerbread... but since then, Evervolv took it up to v1.0.0a15 and now has a working GPS. I'm sure OMGB isn't going to be behind, though. It seems like you initially don't have access to change the layout of the Everlov, though. Instead of trying to go mess with the settings, I downloaded a simple Gingerbread 2.3 launcher app off of the Android Market, and it works beautifully. Only the absence of a Camcorder and a few little things here and there. But I was never able to run daily on an AOSP for more than one or 2 days before going back to a Sense ROM. In my opinion, one of 2 things are going to happen in the near future...
Let me specify though, this is ALL speculation.
These 2 developers, are going to come so close to perfection with these ROMs. But I believe after the OTA is released, we may see HTC perfect it's Sense. I'm curious to see in the near future... perhaps on January 1st, the source at least is leaked out. And let me say again, MERE SPECULATION.
((But based on previous trends, at least in my head, reference Skyraider Froyo 2.2 )) which was out before official OTA release.
Does anyone have a preference, or still need to stick with another 2.2 ROM for some reason? I see why a camcorder may be important to some, but as for everything else, it does what needs to be done. Virtually no hiccups.
Thank you for your responses ahead of time.
_Steven_
I don't think you'll see 2.3 sense for quite some time... probably not until at least spring (IIRC this is about how long it took from 2.2 release until 2.2 sense roms were available). We'll probably never get an official OTA for incredible, but hopefully Evo or another similar phone will get it and we can port it.
As for an AOSP version, I think we're a few weeks or less away from having it up and running fully. The source has already been fully released and the CM team (among many others) is on it. If you can live without sense, I don't think you'll be waiting too much longer.
Hmm, I agree. But I was just thinking it would be something to advertise 5 days before the end of the year, in order to get rid of inventory. But it was just a wild suspision, clearly I haven't a clue about marketing.
Happy Holidays
I'll sample omgb on and off until the real CM7 is released. Haven't tried enervolv though. As far as kernels go, I try invisiblek's builds, reports problems, then roll back to #18.
I believe I've been tinkering alot since I've been off all week (and still have another week to go). Whatever I end up with on Jan 3rd will have to be full featured, stable and last 12 hours on a full charge.
There's a gingerbread version for the incredible that's supposed to be coming to testing soon, but who knows how LTE smartphone testing will impact that. Maybe in march or later (after inc HD is released and out for a month)?

I also believe that we are going to have to wait until the Inc HD comes and sits for a while before we see anything related to Gingerbread on our Inc's. We might get lucky and have it released the same day the Inc HD comes out but Moto is more known to do that. One thing I do believe is that the Inc is not one of the phones that will get left out of the update to 2.3. We might be a little behind the Evo but we will see it.
It's not up to moto, though. Has to go through three stages of carrier testing. Unless VZW tries to release both on the same day, you're gonna get one and the other. Ultimately VZW has the last say.

[Q] Ice Cream Sandwich Development???

By the time ice cream sandwich is out do any of you think that the nook will still stand strong and get a stable rom of it since it will be open source(at least thats what i heard)?
I really want to know because if i bought one i want developers to still be active by the end of the year at least. But hey look at the g2 been out for 2 years and still developers i think^_^ but of course it was the first android device to be out on the market...
Probably. I don't have one but judging by all the ports (honeycomb gingerbread etc) i think it should be fine

Since the Nook is supported by a large known custom ROM like Cyanogenmod, I would say it is safe to assume the Nook will be getting a couple Android iterations.

thank you for answering my question
is their any more comments? i would like to have some more opinions
I honestly doubt the NC will ever have a stable HC port.
I think the sooner ICS comes out, the better for us, the later, the worse for us.
well, I think the main thing that will kill our NC is a hardware upgrade from B&N.
NC2, then we'll all have to run out and buy a new one

ummmmm ok then
.......BUMP!
Why the bump? Didn't this thread give an answer?
I have read on the forum that CM7 developer dalingrin plans to keep his Nook Color till quad core tablets come. None of the rest have announced plans, but the activity is so high that it would be strange if the development community left in six months.
With that said, this is CM- there is no promises. We will know the answer only in the winter.
Correct me if I'm mistaken but I believe quad core is coming out in the 4th Quarter, as well as Ice Cream. As well as Amazon's Quad Tablet
My *plan* is to keep the Nook Color going until I get a tablet that comes with ICS this fall/winter. I'm not sure if I'll keep maintaining CM7/8 beyond that point. I'm sure someone else will step up if needed.
I can't speak for the other Cyanogenmod Nook developers but I have a feeling they will likely do the same.
Most likely I will at least get the port to ICS complete before I move on but no promises.

Take a look at the phone developers...they are still developing ports of OS's and apps that the original phone was discontinued by the companies...and they are still kicking some major ass..how old is the nook...it really is not that old and look at our options currently...both android...time will go on and different systems will come with the nook..and let's say all development did stop right now in the software world..the nook is still one versatile little piece of hardware..and can last a good time longer..we have ice cream coming in the future along with the intercourse of honeycomb and phone android.......development will continue for a while because we have talented developers here and they love this device..dalingrin and madcat and others that have not even come forward yet.

Development for the G2? Slowing down?

I feel like developement as slowed down a tad, Not sure if this has much to do with the G2 being at EOL and developers moving on?
no.
mostly it's the waiting period for the official gingerbread for the DZ that is slowing everything down.
although, there is also Virtuous Unity that was released earlier this month and just had an update a few days ago.

There's nothing to haxx on now. All current ROMs are running AOSP 2.3.4, which is the latest source available. Wait for new AOSP and you'll see it pick up.
Never understand these threads...80% of phones on xda don't even come close to what we have here. Go check out the galaxy s 4g forum if u want to see crap development then you may have a new appreciation. I have had over 15 android phones so I guess I have a lot to compare it to. Trust me, were in one of the best boats in ALL of xda!

What is this "G2" of which thou speaketh
I have a Desire Z -- no EOL for me anytime soon, I hope
Don't forget that the last major version of android isn't coming to phones either. In the past, the devs would be almost be to a point of a stable and google would release the next version. With Honeycomb, it doesn't apply to phones, so the have to wait for ice cream sandwich to start on the next version.
wait till ice cream sandwich comes out, i think thatll prove dev support for ya
The kind of development I would like to see is just like tools for our devices. Like with CM7 adding the possibility of limiting what permission apps are given. Just stuff that'll unlock more features on our phone without having to do it through a third party app.

I'd contribute if I could... But thanks for remembering us!
You'll be on my list of guys to drop coin to after the first of the year. I'm loving MIUI on my D2 and definitely look forward to future updates.
P.S., I know it's a tiny thing but if you get the chance to code so that the alt lock key works that would be awesome.

Android 4.0 ICS for Hero??

Do you think think we will ever see 4.0 or would it be time to move on.
Sent from my HTC Hero using Tapatalk
Yeah, certainly someone will make a rom or port it But it will probably take a long time before it runs good enough for everyday use and it will probably be a step back in performance from GB :/ But hopefully it will run okay eventually
I agree with Habarug. For now we can't tell for sure if it will or if it will not run on the Hero. Same debate was when Gingerbread sources came out... the Gingerbread was heavy on the hero, it was extremely slow for the first releases, but slowly it became faster and faster and by the latest CM releases it became extremely fast almost like Gingerbread was made for the Hero. At first ICS will be slow as **** but who knows maybe after the ICS sources come out and the devs will "cast their spells", ICS will work on our poor Hero.
Developers often do miracles!! I will pray for the 4.0 on my Hero, since I won't change phone until the new Quad-cores will come out..
Well looks like Feeyo over at the Cronos forums is going to try and get ICS on to the Hero but just like Gingerbread it will be slow for the first few build's.
if not the cpu, I would keep that phone for forever, perfect size, nice screen, resolution, colors.. Glad that it is not dead yet and new roms are coming out if not daily, then weekly. Guess there will be somebody playing on this device, hopefully will succeed
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1352149
It has been done! The Developers made An exelent job!
There is a ROM but itțs under full development, so you have to wait some time before you can use a stable ICS rom.
I wish all the devs good luck with the new project
Stefan
Would be awsome..
..seeing ICS on my Hero, and I am willing to try and alpha or beta test existing ics Roms for Hero, heard that there is already an Alpha4 outside which is already able to make phone calls.
Looking forward to ICS.
I think the Hero is getting to slow for ICS, it's a real challenge to bring a good ICS rom to the Hero.
I'm just flashing a new rom to my Hero.
i think every dev working on it, and will be a usable 4 ,earlier than u think
I would be suprised if they make it stable and fast enough for everyday use. But fingers crossed.
is under development, there are already 4 beta!
Although Hero is already running ICS, it doesn't mean it should.
We saw a big improvement in performance and features from 1.5 to 2.1. However, the 2.2 improvements were minor and the 2.3 are already trade-offs... some things are better and some are worse.
ICS was designed for 2+ cores and GPUs, which Hero has none.
Definitly right, but sometimes it is just great to have things which are not meant to be.
Unfortunatley the Hero is getting old, but I 'll give him the chance to savor an IceCreamSandwich at least once ;-)
i dont see why our little hero's couldnt defy logic once more
well, the alpha 4 hasn't been updated for two weeks already. It is not going that smooth as you wish for
The Alpha 5 is out already, and I find this version quite fast. I advice everyone to try it if it's not your main phone. It made me quite happy seeing it work so fast.
Ice Cream Sandwich for Hero]
I've tried Alpha 5 and must say it's really optimistic
I made a "test" of ICS on the Hero on my blog : bheller.com/2011/12/15/jai-teste-ice-cream-sandwich-sur-un-htc-hero/ (in french, sorry mates!)
Quite funny to see the Hero still on the edge
