Not yet. We have to wait and see.
By the way, how about a "call for dev" to the people who rooted A500 in the first place?

Not yet, but could use some help
I captured the update.zip and rooted it but can't get it to run. I'm not sure if it only works if the manufacturer signs the update.zip because I can only sign with a test certificate, trying to get this resolved.
I have to get these Iconia 500 rooted as it is fubar'ng our fleet. We root and install a sales/inventory/delivery system in /system/app and then un-root. Therefore employees can reset them all they want and not have to set them back up and they can wipe them clean of personal data when they leave the company without fubaring the company application. Deploying via the market place cannot be done (we only want employees using the app) and using 'unknown sources' isn't a solution. Plus, most of our employees easily wipe them clean all the time as they play around and learn them. Having the application in /system/app solves every one of these issues. The ACER's update nukes everything is system. Why would they not just modify their applications and leave mine alone?
Thanks to ACER, these folks just deleted out all of our applications and data because all the employees said 'yes/ok' to the update. Now who won't do that?
So, I've got several here for testing and welcome anyone's ideas because they are junk or I will have to flash them back to 3.1 and remove the ability to do updates.
Thanks

EDIT: changed to second set of four files (5-8)!
First 4 files on that page are a rared version of stock 3.2.
Open rar1 and it will unrar all 4. Flash the tablets with it, but I'm not sure you can unroot it afterwards?

CWM - Not loadable is it?
This uses the clockwork recovery doesn't it? You cannot load the CWM unless your have root??? What I really need is to be able to use the stock recovery.
So how do you use CWM without out rooting? Sort of a catch 22?
Now I could download to 3.1 and then install CWM and then apply the update using the modified CWM, but that sort of is a long way around isn't it?

If you're already stuck on stock 3.2 it's your only option.

so is it possible for me to downgrade to 3.1 from 3.2 just by flashing the OTA 3.1 given in this post
[ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878 ]
using the default recovery?

Root for 3.2 can be done!!

The latest filelist shows:
CWM_Root_Acer_A500_7.006.03_COM_GEN1.part1.rar
CWM_Root_Acer_A500_7.006.03_COM_GEN1.part2.rar
CWM_Root_Acer_A500_7.006.03_COM_GEN1.part3.rar
CWM_Root_Acer_A500_7.006.03_COM_GEN1.part4.rar
My remarks on what I did when tried this out and it worked!
1.I downloaded the (4) files, extracted them to a new folder as .zip files.
2.Copied to my ext-sdcard in a folder
3. After the (4) files were installed as described above, I then booted into Recovery and installed each one individually. After each file I DID NOT "Reboot system now", but rather chose to install the next .zip until all (4) were installed.
4. Rebooted system. All my apps were still there. The only things I did have to do is root with Iconia Root app, install Superuser and set up my e-mail accounts again. When I ran an app that required root access, I simply had to allow access with Superuser.
Everything else was there as it was before the install and everything is working great. ! Did this 3 days ago and no issues!

so, can i download these 4 files, extract into the 1 large file, put on my ext-sd renamed as update.zip and flash from clockwork?

are you sure you are on the stock 3.2 recovery??
because as far as i know and correct me if im wrong, the 3.2 stock recovery does not give you the ability to chose which file you wish to flash. it just flashes the file "update.zip" file..

Also , just for clarification. If i do as previously mentioned to install this, will I still have clockwork recovery or will it flash he new Acer stock recovery?

DO NOT listen to this post (1 post wonder).
First off those four files are rar files that once you begin the extraction, will extract themselves into one large file. There is no way to flash those four files seperately.
Second, root and su are included in that ROM, so no need to root (as indicated in the title of the files).
Please don't Brick your device by listening to these directions!

The answer to your question is YES, that's the proper way to install this ROM.

How do I fix? Flash attached .zip at the bottom of this post
What if I think I was infected? Completely wipe your device, format sdard, go back to stock and re-apply rom, then flash the attached .zip (before installing any apps)
Why should I care? read below...
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...your-phone-steal-your-data-and-open-backdoor/
Flash this with ClockWorkMod.... this is for any Pre Gingerbread ROM.... ie TNT anything, VEGAn 5.1.1 and below, Zpad anything, GAdam anything.
This is not necessary for any ROMS based off Gingerbread AOSP or CM7. Including VEGAn-TAB Experimentals.
Be Safe.
Even More Details here: http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...-android-nightmare-and-weve-got-more-details/
I checked out the zip and it just adds a blank text file (0 bytes) called profile to the /system/bin folder. So I am not sure what the fix is?
**EDIT** Nevermind it is a dummy file meant to prevent the virus. Thanks to the OP for providing this.

Edit. I just installed the lookout app to scan my tab, everything was fine and then, i un-installed it since it was running on the background and taking 10% of the cpu..
Anyways, a nice app that can be used to do a quick scan..
I don't have a stock gtab but I'll ask anyways... how can our stock rom users be protected? Is there an alternate method?
Edit just saw the manual process. Im guess that's the way to go.

I'd curious to see what all the vendors are going to do about this. Granted, they could just say that the Market is not there, but regardless the security hole is still there and needs to be plugged up.
Hi,
I hope that this isn't too offtopic, but I was trying to create /system/bin/profile using a term and su, and when i went into root explorer to make /system/bin R/W, root explorer showed the dir as R/W already, and as mounted on /dev/loop9.
Is that normal?
I haven't installed dataloop, at least intentionally, so it seems strange that /system/bin would be mounted there, plus it being R/W by default?
FYI, I use z4root to get temp root. Could that be why /system/bin is R/W?
Then again, that wouldn't explain the /dev/loop9 mount ...

Hi,
Creating the profile file manually, it wouldn't persist,i.e., it was gone after rebooting, so I installed gojimi's zip usung CWM, and that worked.
I also did a mount w/o getting temp root, and /system/bin is not on /dev/loop9, so I'm guessing that when z4root sets temp root, it might be remounting /system/bin on /dev/loop9 itself.
Jim
You would have to download one of those sketchy apps to really be affected anyways, right? Who would do that?!
Appreciate the patch. This highlights the two problems with android though, google fixed this security issue in 2.2.2, but most carriers still haven't released that update. And the market needs some oversight, not authoritarian apple like, but some.

Is there any manual for windows 7 noobies users?
Thanks.

There is a DroidDreamKiller app that allows you to check to see if you are already infected and install the patch. There is also a beta test app that gives you other information. Just search the market for DroidDreamKiller.

USA 1.141.07 update fix with. .img's

Crsdr37 said:
Alright Guys in the USA. I will be posting the .img files to fix your device or update your device to 1.141.07 if you have either used the chinese update fix or some other various fix that left you with a different boot image. The instructions are simple.
1. Connect your tablet to the computer via USB. Put the boot.img and the system.img on your SD Card. Also put the Update.zip then use a file explorer to move the update.zip to the root of your SD card. Which is external SD. If you use Astro. (Alternatively you can just take your SD card out and put it in your computer to put the update.zip.)
2. You need to first push the boot.img
-Open ADB type su then hit enter. (your device will prompt for superuser you must select allow) Then enter the command below.
dd if=/sdcard/boot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 (hit Enter)
3. Then push the system.img
dd if=/sdcard/system.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p3
4. Force shutdown your device when those finish (as your screen may not turn on.)Then hold volume - and the power button "until the green android comes up very important do not let them go just because the device turns on" to start the update.zip. Let it finish (Your device will reboot when it completes.
5. Enjoy the fact your device is back to stock and you can now update when future updates release.
To push the files you will need adb shell. If you dont know what that is look it up, It is part of the android development kit. Second these 2 commands will push the files to their proper mount block. You must push the boot.img first then the system.img These files are for the USA update 1.141.07

** Alright guys I am just posting this link for when you just do the update.zip because you are already on 1.104.05_COM_GEN1 and you have a different kernel then the update.zip, What will happen is when you reboot the tablet from just doing the update.zip you may have WIFI error. These files should resolve that issue. Once again they are only if you have WIFI Error on reboot. To install these you will need some type of file explorer that has rw access to the file system. I rec. Root Explorer. To install these follow these instructions.
1. Copy both modules to your SD card does not matter where.
2. With your File Explorer/Manager Copy both of these files. (Root Explorer will let you multi-select if you hit the menu button.)
3. Navigate to System/Lib/Modules.
4. **This step is very important- You must Mount your System for RW access. If you don't they will not copy. Once you have RW just hit the paste button and then reboot your device.
5. **This step is for anyone still having wifi error after reboot. (Stop being lazy lol and just do all the steps. From the top by mounting the boot.img and system.img that way your device is 100% stock there for no checksum issues.

edit: Actually I guess I do have one issue right now. After the update my wifi stopped working. When I go to the wifi settings I see "Error" under Wi-Fi and the check box is grayed out so that it can't be clicked. Any help?
Had a German 1.112 build i guess, bricked it and revocered it with Acer_A500_1.122.01_EMEA_GEN5. Used boot and system image and then updated and it really works!!! Thank you very very very much!!!
EDIT1: I even not lost my settings and can set the language to German too!!
EDIT2: Root gone (as expected), used Gingerbreak (tab version) and everything works fine.

well the only thing I can think of it either the lib modules for wifi are messed up in which case I can post a link with them or the kernel is different. I would use the 2 .img that I posted then use the update zip. That way the images replace your kernel which is always the root cause of wifi errors.
here is a link to the wifi lib modules. You need to use something like root explorer. To mount the system as rw. Then navigate to system/lib/modules and copy those two files into there with the system mounted as rw. Reboot and see if it fixes the issue!!

You get that only when do don't do all three'. Once you reboot after pushing the 2 images. You have to hold down the volume - and the power button it will then run the update zip to complete.

[ROM][STOCK][P7310] P7310UEKHA Stock Rom (US Retail)

Hey everyone - I figured this might help some folks. It is a CWM installable zip that will restore your system to a completely stock UEKHA (the US retail build for P7310). This includes the stock kernel and recovery image as well.
Heres the instructions:
1) Download this file: http://www.multiupload.com/1KRF1M4CQZ
2) Put the file on your internal storage.
3) Reboot into recovery
4) Execute the Wipe Data/Factory Reset option
5) Choose Install Zip from SD Card
6) Choose Choose Zip from SD Card
7) Select the P7310UEKHA_Restock_v1.zip
8) Sit back, wait about 5 minutes
9) Once the script completes and says "Done", reboot.
10) Welcome to a completely stock US Retail tab
Enjoy.
I just want to ask: Can we flash this on other 8.9s from other regions (namely, an Asian model)?
I'm used to how it is in Maemo where the only differences between firmwares is localization and some preinstalled programs.
Yes you could flash it onto another 8.9 as well, although it should be a P7310 (Wifi only). Just like Maemo, the only differences between regions are localizations and pre-installed apps.
This stock image would not support 3G functionality however, so it would be a bad idea to install it on a P7300.
That's great. Going to flash Clockwork and this once I pick up my P7310 on Tuesday.
Which reminds me - how are Samsung kernels built? I heard that they need to use an initrd (or can the modules be compiled straight into the kernel? or is there a kernel size limitation, which is why an initrd is needed?)
I am truly grateful for this as I rooted and debloated my Tab the very first day lol. This is a great step!
Just flashed my tab with the ROM, works great! Originally had asian ROM on the tab.
Thank you very much! I needed some of the stock original loadable modules after some prior tweaks .
Thanks for the good work!
I was checking the system script used, and I was wondering if this CWM preserve the file/folder permissions as out of the box state or is just 7777 state?

Permissions should be out of the box state...the system image was taken from my stock tab directly, and the extract script should leave all permissions in tact.
Hey alterbridge86, it's great to hear you have a GT 8.9 now, that's good news for us
Quick question, how did you dump the ROM and the recovery? I have a GT 8.9 3G from Orange France and I'd like to dump everything before installing CWM to be able to restore to stock if needed.
Thanks! And again, great work!

I ended up dumping it using the CWM I posted in the other thread. The new clockworkmod stores its backups in .tar format, so it makes it really easy to manipulate. Simply create a backup, then if you're feeling adventurous, you can take this flashable zip, replace system.tar and boot.img with the ones created by your backup. The stock recovery is same on all devices, so you can leave the one that is in this package and itwill work for you
Sounds good, thanks I'll give it a try when I have a little more time to play
Hey guys, i did something really stupid today to my 8.9 p7310...I installed that Asia update to it and it placed the tab into a loop and crashes in the settings app when it first starts up. Cant access SD card to install this firmware. I need the Odin firmware to put back to stock I think. Any ideas?

When you installed the Asian firmware at ODIN, did you remember putting the CSC, PIT, BOOTLOADER to their corresponding places along with the biggest file being at PDA? If you just used the PDA file and not the other files...there's your issue. Once you successfully ODIN, flash this specific CWM Recovery and then you can either choose Stock (this thread) or the Overcome ROM.
Yea just did the pda. The instructions only said the pda. Doesnt matter anyway i am back to stock used adb to load the stock zip to sdcard and loaded

Help getting China based GT-7310 to US stock
Hello,
I recently bought a GT-7310 in China, and want to get this to stock US using your method. I had a question on step #2.
2) Put the file on your internal storage.
How do I get the file to the internal storage and where is that location? I don't see an /SDCARD folder anywhere when browsing the tab in Windows 7. I have the latest USB drivers installed. I tried to push the file to /SDCARD using ADB but Android SDK tools doesn't recognize my tab. Are there any other ways to get the file to internal storage?
Thanks.

When you plug in the tab, it connects via MTP to Windows. Then you can only get to the internal storage, just drop it in there. You'll see all the default folders (music, videos, etc.) so you'll know your in the right place.
Thank you. I got the file to SD Card, went into recovery, executed the wipe data/factory reset option. After the wipe data/factory reset is complete, I selected the option "apply update from /sdcard". I selected that and I get the following error:
E:error opening /data/media: No such file or directory
Any ideas?
Thanks.
You need to use CWM recovery, not the stock recovery.

ICS dlpkgfile

Here is another ZIP for the ICS dlpkgfile: h t t p : / / dl.dropbox.com/u/3547656/dlpkgfile%20%28AsusTransformerICS%29.zip
Here is the exact same file on MediaFire: h t t p : / / w w w . mediafire.com/?k3fm9mwswhx4k8r
I will upload the same ZIP to a dedicated server as well.
Remove the spaces in the http parts of the link.
Do NOT flash in recovery.
Posted a link to MediaFire as well. If either one of these links are non-working, then I will upload to my dedicated server.

if you are a modifier, then you could repack the zip, add SU, mod it how you want, and release it as a rom, or really anything..
This cant be installed right?

Working fine here. Make sure you remove the spaces in the links.
flying_pigs, if you've updated, please, do the following:
1, Flash CWM or Rogue recovery
2, Reboot to recovery
3, Select Backup, Advanced Backup, and only do a backup of system!
4, Upload this backup image somewhere, and post the link
Problem is, many of us can't apply the patch for some reason. This would help it!

Sorry to say that I have not updated yet and won't have time to make use of this file till much later.
I was just uploading this file since the other Dropbox link went down.
I got a TW TF101, how do I use the file?
My build Number is:
HTK75.TW_epad-8.6.5.13-20110925,
FOTA does not work for me.. says no update for me with my current IP (eu) :-/
Do I need 8.6.5.21 before this update?
So my lovely TF101 is not rooted (and so there's also no CWM etc.).
But I think there is a way to install it manually, isn't it? Something like renaming the file, transferring it to a SD card... Or am mixing something up? Then I'll probably have to wait the 7 days until it is supposed to be here in Germany (I really wonder why it should take that long...)

Yes you do.
I'm downloading a .21 TW zip file right now, it's taking forever. Later tonight I can release a safe cwm zip for you to get to .21.

[GUIDE] VM HTC Desire 816 Root How-to

Hello everyone, I recently purchased the Desire 816 for Virgin Mobile, and could not find anything on rooting this device.
So... I figured it out on my own! I decided to write out a tutorial since there isn't anything out there about rooting this phone!
I'm also including a nandroid backup of my stock rooted rom if you don't want to go through all of the steps. You will still need custom recovery.
1. Unlock your bootloader, install custom recovery, and flash superuser. I used v_superuser's guide for this, so thanks to him!
Use his guide to install custom recovery and root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2775801
The custom recovery he links to isn't made for the VM variant of this phone, but it works!
Now you can restore my clean install, rooted nandroid backup (link at end of post) if you don't want to do the following steps and still have full root.
2. Hopefully you were able to successfully install custom recovery and root.
Now this part is a bit tricky. Even with root HTC is stopping us from writing to system. For this we need to apply the wp_mod.ko module.
Download it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2707378
Copy this file to the root of your internal storage.
Now download Terminal Emulator from play store, run it and enter the following commands (you only need to do this once):
su
insmod /sdcard/wp_mod.ko
Once you do this go into your favorite root explorer and mount as R/W. Copy the wp_mod.ko file to /system/lib/modules
Now go to /system/etc and find install-recovery.sh. Open it with a text editor and add a new line at the end with the following:
insmod /system/lib/modules/wp_mod.ko
Reboot! If all went well the wp_mod module will run at boot every time so you won't have to do it manually each time!
Congratulations, you now have a fully rooted Desire 816!
Download my nandroid backup here (place the contained folder into the CWM backup directory):
https://drive.google.com/uc?id=0B0bhyG2E55hXaWtpeGVQaEpOVzA&export=download
Hope this helped anyone wondering how to root the device!
I just get md5 mismatch error when I try to restore
Never mind found out my phone wasn't downloading the whole back up

I'm not trying to offend with my answer. Just going for the easiest solution first...
Did you unzip the backup nandroid onto your PC? I imagine he zipped the actual Nandroid folder as it would have a date and time as the name.
If you unzip VM_HTC_Desire_816_Rooted_NandroidBackup.zip you SHOULD see a folder with a date and time. That is the actual nandroid that you'd copy to your Clockwordmod backup folder.

The act of unlocking the phone clears out your data so you might notice that your flashlight and calculator apps are missing. For some reason HTC didn't make those 2 system apps.
If you'd like them back, here you go.

problems with the mod.ko
everything works until I get to the wp_mod.ko command when using the terminal command. It just says cannot open. I tried countless times but it says the same thing. Is there any other way?

If you're having too much trouble and are about to give up you can always download Kontrary's Nandroid backup. I didn't use it but I did look through it and it looks like he already did the write protect mod in it.
Just unzip it on your PC and put the dated folder in your clockworkmod/backup folder. Boot into CWM recovery and restore from his nandroid.
Out of curiosity... Are you hitting enter after SU and before insmod???
Also...
The command insmod /sdcard/wp_mod.ko is only good if you have wp_mod.ko sitting on the root of the internal sd. If its on your micro sd card you'll obviously have to change the path after insmod or just move it to the internal sd..
thanks

Have you plugged it in while in Fastboot? Which OS are you running? I'm on Win 7 x64 and have it set to download drivers from Windows update, I didn't have any problems going that route.
Have you downloaded HTC Sync Manager? It has the drivers required for your PC to recognize your phone.

I installed your CWM Backup after I couldn't figure out your steps... but now there's an ANNOYING notification that says, "Smith disabled... Click here to open." I open it, and no matter what settings I choose, this notification keeps POPPING UP! Is this your doing, or a known issue with this "Mod." All I wanted to do was uninstall all the Google/VM Bloatware. Now going back to stock might be the only fix... ????
That Smith app is a problem for most recent HTC phones. It has nothing to do with the CWM backup. It happens with the M8 and our 816.
I just long press the notification, click App Info and force close. It's usually good until you reboot your phone.
Either HTC or Sprint is supposed to be looking for a fix but who knows.

I was able to stop this annoyance by simply going to Titanium Backup (root needed) and freezing the process.
I typed in Smith in the search bar of TB and it came back with this process/app called
"Smith 4.21-plat_4.4.2-KOT49H"
I believe it happens to come up when a specific "bloatware" app is unaccessible by the device when removed but I have not singled out which app is it so far.
I backed up the app first then froze it and it stopped the Smith popup error permanently even after reboots and power offs.
(You could possibly delete it but until the stock bloatware app that causes this pinpointed i wouldn't recommend it.)
Tested running everything is good no errors rebooted fine checked bootloader and recovery and both are fine as well.
