I'm so undecisive - Droid Incredible General

So I have this problem, where I cannot for the life of me stick to a stinkin ROM type. AOSP or Sense. And since I am a fan of Sense 1.0 and until just recently there has been no good gingerbread roms using it ive had to try almost all the 2.1/3.0 ROMS. None which I like. Our phone is just too slow to handle it well (IMO).
So, does anyone else have this indecisive behavior? If you do what do you find yourself on most of the time? Sense, or AOSP?

AOSP / CM7.
I found that all my indecisiveness was cured with themeing my phone.
Used Launcher Pro instead of the cruddy default launcher that CM7 uses, I used android kitchen (http://uot.dakra.lt/kitchen/) to theme my status bar, drop down and icons in the status bar- and I used a couple more themeing widgets and apps found from people at http://mycolorscreen.com/category/android/
Also I changed the dock background to a better looking one and I moved around the icons in Launcher Pro so that it'd be simpler to click on them quickly (like the phone icon).
I think the key is to find a stable yet up-to-date ROM, then mod the crap outta it until you really love it, then don't update it unless you really want to (like a new version of android comes out). I'm not planning on upgrading my CM7 unless android has a new release, which may be a few months.

Yeah but the problem I find with AOSP is that it indeed feels so half baked to me. Like there is no K9 dialing? WTH. (It's coming, some guy built it and is going to submit it to review, but still, it hasnt had this???) The browser is sooo much slower graphically. Flash is useless.
But it's so clean. And fast. never freezes.
And themes, eh they never feel complete either. Just my opinion. Thanks for sharing yours!

ah yeah I think you're missing some pieces. If you want T9 dialing then there are "dialer" apps out there. Go Dialer I think was one of the better ones, but I still prefer stock (no T9 smart dialing but I'm ok with it)
You don't have to use prepackaged themes, really you can theme your phone into anything you're looking for. There are apps, widgets and modifications to do it, if you need any hints on which apps and places to go I can let you know. I don't even know what browser comes with CM7, I always uninstall. Dolphin Mini Browser has always been my favorite.
I think you are looking at only what is presented with the ROM, you can really exchange/modify most things in any rooted ROM pretty easily.
and I don't mean to try and sell you on a particular ROM, I just want to make sure you know what's possible and what's out there

OP, you must be a REAL flash-o-holic. I just tried CM7.1... again... on my Tbolt and I can't STAND it. CM doesn't seem any faster on my dInc or my Tbolt than the Sense 1.0 ROM I had on the dInc or the Sense 3.0 3D ROM on my Tbolt. In fact, it shows more lag on both. It's just not a finished product in my opinion. To relate it to a car...
A good Sense ROM is like the whole package. Everything has been thought out and the right things added and the whole package pretty nicely tied together and polished.
AOSP is kinda like GM just sold you the rolling chassis. Now you gotta put some kind of body on it, something to steer it with, lights, seats, wheels better than the stamped steel crap they rolled off the truck on... It's like a hobby kit of an OS. If someone offered a decent package of widgets for AOSP I might give it more than a half a day on my phone. I just don't have any desire to spend hours of time and money trying to slowly build an AOSP ROM into something that begins to do what I want. If AOSP was my only choice, I'd be back on BlackBerry.

I've been on MIUI as a daily for probably 6 months now, the themeing possibilities with this ROM honestly have gotten rid of any need to crackflash for me. BTW OP, it has T9 stock and a bunch of other great things.
I also tried most of the Sense 3.0 ROMs and couldn't find one that I liked enough to stay for more than about a week (Nils BS3.0 for the record) and most only last a few hours. Just can't beat the smoothness and possibilities that come with MIUI IMO.

i have been using skyraider 4.3 the most, swapped it out recently for CM7 until today i went back, and was super glad i did.
Key features for me are:
-CM7 style dual slider lockscreen
(this is a must because i like to be able to go directly to the dialer or messages, and have instant access to switch the phone to vibrate/ring from the lockscreen)
-stock gingerbread keyboard (not a fan of the sense one)
-quick and stable
-sense dialer
Edit: There is also a skyraider 5.0 in the works, using the new OTA gingerbread framework, though not ETA for that yet

My experience has been that Sense 1.0 ROMs are the most stable and smooth. I liked SkyRaider the best for performance and customization, but now that GB is official it's hard to stay on Froyo. SR 5 is coming, but probably not for a while.
My daily right now is Insensitive-Minimalist 2.1. It has the Sense framework, most of the better Sense Apps, but everything else removed. It's fast and stable, IMHO. It lacks the customizable features in CM, but I can live without those.

I keep a backup of CM7 on my phone for when I want to play emulators with my wii controller, otherwise I hop around on various Sense roms. Really liking the Bliss port that's going on right now.

Ah you share my thoughts exactly. Cyanogenmod and the team do a great job of what they do but AOSP to me is like what you said, a chassis on wheels. My favorite ROMs used to be virtuous and skyraider, but I can't go back to froyo now that in on the gingerbread train.

Hands up who just wants a fast, stable vanilla 2.1 ROM with everything working...

I know there are people who love sense/rosie, I used to be one of them. But the more I use my phone, the more I find myself just wanting it cut down a bit and more streamlined..
I have no need for facebook or twitter, htc mail widgets etc.
The only things I see value in are the dialer, pinch to zoom in the browser and the music controls on the lock screen..
I have found myself setting 'home' as the default on most of my ROM's and having everything go fast, but I can't help thinking it could be even better..
I am fine with 3 to 5 home screens, no need for leap..
Just a lightning fast, stable build with no bloat or social crap..
Am I alone in wanting this?
TJ
For all the Dev's, you are doing AWESOME work, I love playing with all the ROM's and sincerely appreciate your time and effort. I know the masses want rosie, but there are a large number of people who aren't the majority
Honestly, I really like the HTC Friendstream and/or Twitter widget, but I can do without them. One thing I would miss is the HTC camera, but I found out today that it's been ported to the Nexus One, so I don't see why we couldn't get the HTC Camera in a vanilla Hero ROM.
I've noticed (using Villain 5.0, aka the 2.1 Sprint Hero ROM) that if I'm listening to music and using google navigation, the music skips sometimes, mostly when the GPS app is calculating something. I figure getting rid of Sense might fix this by freeing up some RAM.
So, as long as we can get the HTC Camera into a vanilla ROM (and maybe that's already been done... anyone?), then yes, I would rather use a vanilla ROM.
With a vanilla ROM we should also be able to use voice dialing, right? Since we'd be using the google dialer instead of the HTC one?
Save Heros from sense.
I really don't like sense and hate the thought of having to return to it for a stable phone... the stock android experience is what I want on the my Hero.
I am a developer and do know Java well but I don't have much time to dive into Android although I have started. I have the sdk, eclipse, and the source synced and started looking at the code.
I know we are waiting for HTC to release updated kernel sources and to get our hands on stable drivers but I would like to get Gallery3D and Launcher 2 working
It's a shame that I have this tease... a 80% stable phone using aHero v0.6.1 but the phone still locks up and reboot randomly... this could have a lot to do with the kernel and drivers.
Gallery3D used to work in both landscape and Portrait on Android 2.0
Not sure if this is Google dropping support or bad drivers but I have had Google Earth running on this Hero too.
Launcher2 is actually faster then launcher but it seems to swap out of memory or something when the phone sleeps and takes a few seconds to wake up.
I will try and look at the code more but I'm hoping some very skilled Android Hero guru will save the Hero and get us up and running %100 in the next months.
i support the notion for a vanila rom. sense is nice, but truthfully, i am a fan of the stock android gui. for some, its clunky. for me, i can work around it. i feel the phone would be more of a true enthusiast's phone with the stock OS, and sense tries to well..(no pun intended) make sense for people new to having a phone.
HTC is doing a great job making android phones appealing, but the way android OS looked prior to sense was what appealed me to it in the first place...something unique, one that is sort of minimalistic yet packs a lot of options for an end-user. I find HTC's widgets beautiful but slow. And in a phone, i'd rather have zip to make an emergency phone call rather than a cool UI soaking up the resources to display the weather. thats not to say i don't like cute little things like that, though. just have the speed first, optimize and incorporate later. 1.5 did well, and 2.1 really makes android very nice, keeping its simplicity and making subtle yet elegant additions.
2.1 stock rom based from these leaks pls =3
It's good to see i'm not alone..
I agree that once the new kernel comes out I think it will be much easier to get a fully functional stock 2.1 happening..
I have used raidroid 2.1 and I was VERY impressed with the speed, but all that makes me think is how it could be even faster!
I just like the idea of a business like experience.. No bull****, just do what you are built to do.
I'm pretty keen to see a fast stock rom as well. I already use the stock keyboard because of its speed and I was using Launcher2 for a while, but it was too buggy.
But really, more then anything I want a fast, stable build to run with.
The only thing I think it would really miss is the music player controls on the lock screen, but I think they could do with some work.... not fast enough at the moment, the same goes with unlocking to answer a phone call, it all seems to take too long.
agree
aHero 0.61 is good, but still a bit buggy
im not a fan of the sense bloatware approach
I'm currently working on a rom that pretty much fits these requirements.
CyanogenMod based (this may change due to video playback issues), JIT enabled, and after an initial release, I may try and integrate drivers from the CDMA 2.1 roms.
Oh, and it won't have Sense (inefficient and ineffective), Launcher2, Live Wallpapers or any of the rest of that superfluous crap.
I would love to see a stable build of a vanilla rom...everytime one is released i flash right away but theres always a major bug that push me to sense roms again.
I even like the android camera, mostly in poor light conditions.
The music control in lockscreen is nice but not nice enough to make it a setback...
All the social widgets(twitter, facebook, mail, buzz, etc.) can be found in market for free...many of them better then HTC ones.
Genie widgets can do weather and news(I use them in sense roms)
If ppl dont like android calendar widget,"smooth calendar" is similar to HTC calendar(to me is much better) and free.
And thats what makes vanilla rom so good,i only install this apk if i want to or need it...my phone,my rules.
yeah i would love one!
I also hate seeing SocialNetworkReciever firing up all the time in logcat when my phone is asleep when I have no accounts for fb, twitter and flickr..
*SocialNetworkReciever is being called every 5 mins! Even after removing peep!
Just like any OS on whatever device. It should be basic and fast.
+1 for Vanilla.
I very much prefer the vanilla Android experience over Sense. For me Sense adds nothing but bugs and bloat and also a few Android features I like are missing in HTC Android.
I would like one as well. Currently I am just stripping everything from someone's custom rom, perhaps I should try the Kitchen that's available to make my own 2.1, based on AOSP.
Yep, i'm on board. A 2.1 Vanilla ROM, possibly with Multi-Touch in the Browser, Touch Focus in the Camera and the HTC dialler would be perfect.
I loved the aychteesee rom for this reason. at the time it was the fastest around for the hero. shame it never got updated, there were one or two bugs that pushed me back to sense.
It makes sense to install an os with very few features on, as we have the Market! I really don't find any htc widget/app that performs better than a Market place counterpart. Just look at Camera Zoom FX.
Best Vanilla Rom
Hi all,
I've tried lots of ROMs and I must say that Kagudroid 1.2.2 is by far the best. It is vanilla Android and it is faster, more stable, less buggy than any other ROM. The only drawback was that the camera was unstable, but now there is a fix for that in the post on Htcpedia.com (http://htcpedia.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1979)
Try it, it's the difference you're looking for!
I really want a stock fast vanilla rom.. Going to try this kagudroid.. Let's se how it is

I don't think this is the right part of the hero threads for your Christmas wish list, mayee the Q&A section. Try picking a Rom that's already close to what you require and giving feedback
Would love one, too!
<3 Google / Android 4 Life ;-)

What do you want from your ROM?

Ok, so this is not only for Viper users, this is for everyone, on any ROM. Please don't post things like "working gps" because the devs can't do anything right now. But what features would you like in a ROM? ...This will give us an idea for updates... if something is needed by enough people, I'm sure everyon
e will incorporate it into their ROMs...
And the rest is up to you.....
I love the VIPERrom 3.0.3. Things about it- stability, speed (I think), custom launcher (zeam launcher). I'd like a cool notif bar. I'm currently using emotionless beast from Mystery. But the 3.0.3 was cool too. To each his own, but I like the colors and such in my themes. And lightweight (keep the bloatware to a minimum).
Keep up the good work Viper team. I tried Apocalypse 4.0.2c for a couple days but went back to trinity 3.0.3. Had a couple problems that I was too lazy to work through. All my fault. I'll go back to 4.0.2c soon.
I look for a rom that cuts as much crap out that I don't need and incorporates as much stuff that I do. This isn't always possible because of individual tastes, but some cookers are better(for me) than others. I also look at theming, which needs to look professional, for me to consider it.

I want support for RFS. Seems almost everyone is making the switch to EXT4 but luckily there are a few that still support those of us using RFS! Other than that I like having Touchwiz stripped out. I always wanted it before but after using Midnight Rom I just don't want it anymore. I bought ADW EX and that's the way for me to go!
Although I'm not running ViperROM, I love the idea behind the viperstore. Regardless of what ROM thread you're in, you see people asking for AOSP lockscreens, themes, certain APK's, etc. I think that with the relatively small community of devoted developers for the epic, there could be a common repository for people to go to for their personalization needs.
Just food for thought. Keep up the good work on ViperROM!

I want my device to be classy with simple elegance. I dont want annoying boot sounds and shutdown sounds, or theming which advertises the name of the rom. I want a rom that is rock solid stable, ie no DK28. I want touchwiz ripped out and no launcher included. I should not have to uninstall anything from a fresh rom install, especially various launchers.
CIFS support for mounting network folders.
Increase network speeds on 3g, becaue data government killer just not doing it for me.

+1 for this.
In addition..
No Launcher (or a very unique one like what was mentioned earlier)
no sprint bloatware.
minimal memory footprint.
Great battery life.
Somehow increased speeds for the data cuz for me the governor killer isn't doing much either.
no annoying startup/shutdown sounds (could be muted)
Slick but professional theming.
No more bubble SMS
stock battery icon. (seems like all the circle ones ping the battery info too often and it kills my battery. Like dropping 25% overnight doing nothing with no widgets installed whatsoever.)
I'm tired of repackaged Roms that just have a different theme and maybe one or two things taken out or added in that I could do myself.
I like a clean slate rom like Naked Bonsai and add the themes and addons myself. I like Midnight just because they got rid of touchwiz. I wish ViperROM would not come with all the themes built in. Undervolting and unique features are nice as well.
So basically, I want clean and stable with themes belonging in the theme section and a nice bunch of addons. I honestly doubt we're gonna be having many unique Roms till kernel source comes out though

I agree about ViperROM theming. I would prefer more of a blank slate. But the developer is free to make their rom however they want. I just have to not complain and change it myself
I just want a stock rom. No custom launcher, no sprint apps, no touchwiz, just stock. Maybe overclocked to 1.2ghz, but stock and built in tethering support (doesn't have to wifi, I can deal with usb) cause paying extra for the same data is bull****.
You want a clean slate, wait till you see Frankenstien FROYO tomorrow night, its 93mb zipped right now,and I'm still working on it,but it is very stable from the start,I'm very excited to be releasing this...

I would like it to be easier to see what I'm getting before I download a new rom. Seems like there are a lot of cases where if you weren't using a rom from the start it's kinda hard to track down all it's features and what it's like.

MIUI rom - why?

I've just checked out a couple of vids on Youtube of the MIUI rom on the Mytouch 4G. It has some nice looking animations, but I don't otherwise get why an Android user would want this rom. It looks like an iPhone - the system takes a big steaming dump of apps all over your home screens, and no launcher. It seems like a step backwards to me.
Can someone who uses this rom please convince me otherwise? What does it have that I can't get elsewhere?
I used to think the same, but when I gave it a bash it was VERY smooth! And with Launcher Pro on it, near perfect.
But there are so many more settings you can fiddle with on CM, I always go back to the best.
Flashed a CM7 nightly this morning,.... AMAAAAZING!
So you CAN install a launcher on it? I got the impression that you couldn't. Hmmm, I might give it a try when I have some time. What's battery life like - one video (admittedly for the MT4G) said it was pretty crap. That same video also said that RAM usage was considerably lower than Sense, which interests me.
Yeah man, standard MIUI launcher is junk IMO, no app drawer? Huh? Definitely get your launcher of choice on there straight away.
From what I remember (since November ish) battery life was ok, RAM was vgood. Yeah give it a bash,... the guy who has done the port has updated quite a few times since I tried it.
I love the standard launcher after 2 years of seeing either stock android launcher or ones similar to it , it is a nice change of pace
I didn't like miui at first but it grew on me. I was constantly trying to find the app launcher it runs fast and you can customize the heck out of it!
Sent from my Pear phone.
I was really impressed with it, actually. Very lightweight on the system.
If you don't like the lack of drawer (I hate it...thinking a hybrid with an app drawer would be perfection) you can get stuff tucked away in folders, or use launcher pro.
It just looks and feels so fresh and clean...but it's just not what I personally love about Android. A great option that's totally different.
It's also a great UI for iphone converters...

Thats exactly it, MIUI is just like an I phone without restrictions! You can add, take away and do anything You want with it maintaining its beauty and speed! I'm inclined to agree with you. I gave it a try, but those iPhone-esque menus had me running for the hills - it just seemed wrong!
In the last couple of days I've been through the stock Sense rom (too heavy on the hardware), MIUI (just no), Enomther's Official (battery life poor) and CM 6.1.1 (battery life poor). I'm currently draining the battery so I can charge properly and wipe batt stats on CM - hopefully that will help. But if not then I'm going to have to roll back to the stock rom, which is a real shame because all the others run so quick even at 800mhz...

i have been running CyanM since went to Android with tthe N1 and I can say its making me think! I like the polish. The initial setup was a little slower because of the lack of app draw and having to tuck things away. After that I can say I am really digging the Rom
I really like the notification put-down with the toggles at the bottom. Looks so good and super functional.
Edit: but I use virtuous as my daily.

I've finally settled on a ROM - Sparksmod Extra HotSauce. Basically CMod with loads of pretty icons and animations. I love it so much, it's satisfied both the need for speed/lightweight on RAM, and having the eye candy to show off.
Install a decent laucher like ADW EX or LauncherPro (which now has transition animations too), and it blows anything else away. I can't recommend it highly enough. My iPhone-toting friends are jealous as well.
At first I didn't like it... Then it grew on me.... Then I didn't like it again (had too many apps on homescreen)... Now I like it again..... I like just installed Touchwiz launcher (I know.. Wut? ) and love it again IMO Touchwiz launcher is like MIUI's with an app drawer xD (I prefer though )
my question is : why not
the easy theme-ing + change icons / pull down widget = win
if u dont like the iphone-ish look, put ADW EX on top of it
i do like how i can organize stuff with the folders
that + the ease of uninstalling apps when i dont like them,
it sucks having to wait to go through setting and wait 30 secs to generate the whole list.
oh the smoothness too
Seriously... why not?? I use miui for a few reasons..
1. Bad ass lock screen.. by far the best. IMHO (Music control, custom wallpaper, quick launch phone and messaging app) yeah you COULD just use widget locker.. but that slows phone down and drains battery life.. not as sick as default miui I think.
2. Themes.. the themes available look amazing, completely customize all your icons, better than you can get with adw, lp or any made for cyanogenmod.. and you can mix and match what themes parts you want applied.
3. Notification bar.. toggles on the pulldown are great.. ya you can do basically the same with cyanogenmod, but not as polished IMO..
4. battery life isn't an issue for me.. or ram.. basically the same as cyanogen 6.1.1... haven't tried cm7. So no input there.
5. Updated every Friday. which is nice..
Yeah its iphone-ish since all the icons are uniformed.. and menus, I don't spend all my time changing settings so menus don't bother me.. easier to navigate then stock android IMO but with icons I actually like that about it.. I use adw launcher ex. So I have a launcher.. I don't use the stock launcher with miui. Personally I don't care for it.. i hate apps on my homescreen... IMO they belong in the launcher.. widgets belong on the homescreen. But that's just me.. to each there own. I switch between cyanogen mod 6.1.1 and miui... I just nand backup each so I can switch between both whenever I feel the need. there both esentially set up the exact same. Same apps and launchers.. I'm been on cyanogen mod since I had a mytouch 18 months ago till miui was ported.. it mixes things up, I don't think it takes away from android.. it gives you the best of both worlds in my opinion..

I have to say, that Im loving the Miui. Sure, it comes with no app drawer and it looks too close to an iphone, but one thing I give credit to apple, is the glossy and high resolution look to their icons and layouts.
I use Launcher pro and it makes me a happy Android fan. I get to load new themes with the least amount of effort whatsoever. Its amazing how quickly you can change the look of your phone.
The lockscreen is the best ive seen. I dont experience lags for a rom that is quite stylish and has so many features. The customization on this rom is out of this world. There's a setting for anything Ive wanted to change (minus changing the color of the notification bar).
So, to summerize: It runs fast, it looks really good with easy theme changing ability and it lets you customize the heck out of it.
The battery life is decent. I havent noticed a major difference between any of the roms ive tried when it comes to that. Btw, I have been on CM 6.1.1 and supervillianz and the default sense. This is the only rom that made me NOT change and try other roms. Im quite happy with what I have. Why look elsewhere

Battle of the MIUI roms!

So now we have several MIUI roms for N1 but which one is the best?
Stability,performance,packed goodies....
Which MIUI is the best and why for you?
Why is MIUI so special? Just go buy an iPhone, it's kind the same... Really, I don't find anything special but heavy modded graphics. What do you use MIUI features for?
It's simply the fastest roms for N1, the menus just fly
I find Enomther's really fast.

Maybe some would love the UI but hate the OS?
I have seen some people adding WP7 UI like into Galaxy S. All these just show how flexible Android can be.
That's true, but being like that, someone could just create a iPhone-like launcher touching nothing else.
If you keep using the MIUI stock Launcher than yes it looks like a far family member of iphone, but if you use the exellent ADW you gain the extra speed from MIUI + some goodies like the Themes while having an Android UI
CM7 is also very fast but unstable for me whatever is the build: dead touchscreen when calling could happen any time

I hate people who attempt to re-create WP7's UI on Android. There is no way you can properly emulate the simplicity and beauty of WP7 with static blue icons. MIUI may try to copy the iPhone over to Android, but even then you have to remember it is simply a User Interface. Android is still under there, not iOS. Everyone knows out off all the major mobile operating systems Android lacks in the UI department (opinion, of course).
And MIUI attempts to remedy that problem.
i tested [ROM] Miui-AU ROM (english/german) but it isn't that fast.
The Launcher ist laggy (compared to GO or LP) and no scrollable widgets...
i know you can use a different launcher, but then i dont need MIUI...
I just want to recall that this topic is about which MIUI is the best, not if MIUI is good or not...
Ive been using Eveek's eMIUI for a while. I reckon its the best one out of the lot simply cos its the most stable version around.. Also Ive noticed this rom is near enough stock with very minor tweaks. Compare it to others they have heavily modded the stock version which wasnt to my liking!
i had no idea MIUI was so much faster. why is it faster? i only watched one video on MIUI and it was kinda cool but i never tried it out. am i missing something by not trying it?
MIUI is always ahead of the curve when it comes to design and innovation. It was the first with lockscreen music control, the first with power control in the notification bar, the first with a built in theme manager system (with an online data base for easy theme searching and downloading), the first with FM radio on the N1 etc. Not only did it do these things first, but it does them the best.
It has an absolutely gorgeous UI (hi-resolution icons, transitions, themes and menus that blow stock Android out of the water). It's fast and has amazing battery life. The folder system for App organization is light years ahead of the app drawer, which is archaic and inefficient. Also, the support for this ROM is amazing!
Let's get real, it takes some of the best elements of the iPhone UI (ex high resolution, unified icons) and combines it with everything great about Android. Those saying it's just trying o copy the iPhone are ignorant and should really just get their heads out of their asses.
Sure, it might not be for everyone but I would encourage people to try it first before they dismiss it. I was skeptical at first as well but I've been using it for months now and have no intentions of going back to anything else. I flashed CM7 to try out but it doesn't compare, that is my opinion.
And I would recommend getting the stock ROM from miui-dev.com just because the support for the stock ROM is so much better than the MIUI ROMs here. There is an online theme database that comes as an app with the ROM anyways, so you can change up the look very easily if you choose to do so.
ya you are missing out, it is highly optimized, solid fast, great battery life, weekly updates, everything makes sense..hence why cyanogen has borrowed some ideas/stuff. Most people just talk **** about miui cuz it looks iphonish, let them be nubs because from the ground up miui has alot more development and is way more advanced than alot of other roms out there, just my two cents but they are worth more than others
I'm not sure whenever I'd consider MIUI one step ahead the current UIs. I find no user friendly evolution, just reordered things. I mean, no intelligent way to launch an application (and no, gestures are NOT the way it will be as you have to remember the gesture), no "outstanding" graphics (I'm not impressed by them, not after 5 minutes handling it).
Is it fast? People in this thread have already replied: it's not fast, it may be faster than CM (which IMHO is getting too choppy due to too many under-the-hood things users are not interested in), but it's not faster than Enomther's, for example. No way.
Why is it followed then? Really simple: it's not the usual CM ROM. If only there was another launcher, people may not idolize this ROM. Kudos to the developers for developing it though, otherwise CM would be the (choppy) standard.

I well tested it as I pushed forward the italian translation, but I always been perplexed about its app management and launcher in general. Yes, I prefere the archaic and - IMHO - efficient current one. And no, there is not so much other code I'd import in any other ROM. From my point of view it's just a (shining?) iPhone UI with FM radio. Kudos for them releasing the radio part. That's all.

Can you give some examples of an intelligent way to launch an application? Just curious.
I'm partial to formel. He keeps up with the latest and its a one shot you're done rom. No need to fiddle with the language packs. I was using enom before which was a very good rom. I get similar batt with formel and the performance is a little smoother. I'm using adw as I'm not fond of the iphone layout anyways. IMO this is a good start for those that want to scope out miui and see what its about. Its pretty much bug free and stable for day to day use which for me is important. I need my phone to work.
I was an Enom fan too, complete rom and very stable but...you get tired pretty soon!
I used to play with Rodriguez's MIUI because it was full of goodies but God knows why he disapeared all of a sudden
Now I am trying Moviestar HD which seems stable but the Theme app can't apply themes downloaded even renamed into mtz, I heard MIUI-AU is the best on Desire but its adaptation on N1 is unstable
The themes work on formel except for the sms skinning. Dont believe that one is figured out yet. The rodriguez rom is good but is 3 releases back now and it has a fair few bugs I turned up in just a few days of usage. Overall the goodies didnt equal out to a newer and quite a bit more tuned up version of miui. I have not tried moviestar yet. Frankly I"m pretty happy with formel. It flat works.
I figured that I can use a custom theme via File Manager but sms app doesn't change like on Formel.
I think a newer theme app is available because it says so when I use it but when I try to download the link is not working!
I hope in next versions of Formel and Moviestar they will use the new fixed one, dunno about MIUI-AU

What makes these ICS roms so cool?

I haven't really tried them out much yet. I installed AOKP for a little bit the other day, but didn't know enough about ti to leave it on as my daily driver for work. SO I am wondering what do these roms have that make them cool? I like the way the 5 icons look in the dock at the bottom of the screen, but I can get that with GoLauncher.
Not hating on these roms at all. I love what the devs are doing. I just want to know what difference I get going with an ICS rom over something like MikG 3.0 or tommys classic?
Thanks
It's the new thing out..newer is better, right?

Battery life on decks alphas is awesome
I'd like to use Chrome for the phone.
I haven't left any on my Evo because I'm waiting for CM9 to come out. Although there are a couple of ROMS in the development section that looks promising.
Plus I am getting stellar performance w/ Evo Classic 0.06 Supermagic preview developed by TommyTomatoe

I have done that, but I also know these roms aren't all their yet. Just wondering what cool new features they have and which ones they might be missing compared to the actual ICS
I'm not always an early adopter, and I don't automatically subscribe to newer=better.
That said, I just really love the new UI for ICS. I've always had to theme my roms to get rid of green and replace with blue (I hate green).
It's also the first real revamp of the UI in a LONG time. I like how the menu options shoot up the middle of screen, instead of 6 blocks across the bottom.
I like how there's finally scrollable Widgets (namely, finally, for the email), but also browser, calendar.
The quickmenu in browser is a really cool feature, as is the way browser handles tabs.
I really like the way gallery is handled, and the layout for sharing options after a pic is taken.
Notifications sweep away much easier/smoother than I've ever seen on GB. Also, long press of home for task switching is handled nicer than previously, I think.
I just really like it. Yes, there are features not working yet, but I do think it really is an improvement over earlier versions. On AOKP, I'm getting pretty poor battery life (but it's a great ROM), On drews p6 I got fantastic battery life.
Oh, I like the rotation animation, too. I'm sure there's lots more I'm not thinking of.

Not sold on ICS... yet.
I'm a flashaholic. My wife and I both have EVO 4G's, and I'm constantly flashing different ROMs on our phones. I've tried a couple ICS roms, even though there are still some bugs yet to be worked out. I'm not really impressed. I've found that I prefer ROMs that are more easily theme friendly. I think the new ICS blue is gonna get old fast. My wife prefers MikG 3.0, while I'm currently swagged out with Swagged Out Stock (Swag=ON). That said, when CM9 is available, I'll flash and play around with it. I'm also looking forward to checking out Chrome and a few other apps only available for ICS.
Why do you think CM9 will be worth? Hell, it may never even come to Evo (if you haven't noticed, CM has dropped support for Evo). The devs working on 4.0 now are light years beyond CM. Try it , you'll see.

Hey,
Ics is android 4.0 which is the latest and greatest! All the android 4.0 roms you will find right now are all AOSP roms, and later on when HTC releases it there will be the Sense android 4.0 roms! The difference is its just the latest and has extra eye candy and a few better features!
I hope I helped If I did please hit the thanks button,
Stevo

As far as I've heard from inside source is that cm9 is close to ready for evo. Its missing some drivers that they are having to write themselves due to lack of support from HTC and qualcom. I know for a fact that a close buddy of mine is running cm9 that he compiled himself from cm tree only thing is hes had to hack the kernel for now. So it will be coming eventually.
cool to hear. I'll obviously keep my eye out (always am lol). Thanks for heads up. AOKP so far has been pretty amazing, though.

Battery life is my favorite part so far. Going a full day and at the end of the night having 50% left is ridiculous. I use to be lucky having battery left by lunch! AOKP by the way. Tried to post the screenshot but either the upload doesn't work on the app or I don't have enough posts.
First, its task manager is awsome, you have to now end tasks or they will keep going its nice in some ways but lame if you get tomany running,
second, scrollable widgets and the ablity to resize them.\
and thats all i got
The big things that I'm loving about ICS are;
Scollable widgets (I used to stick to sense because of the great widgets, but these are comparable).
Re-sizable widgets (I know this is available with different launcher replacements, but it's nice to have "out of the box").
Battery life, getting almost 24 hours on AOKP.
Swiping away notifications (again, available on different ROMs).
The overall look is fresh, I prefer the blue over the typical green.
The things I'm not a fan of;
No 4g (though I hardly ever used it anyway because it just KILLS my battery).
No video recording.
Random force closes (these are few and far between, much less than other ROMs I've been on, but they still happen).
Not being able to long press to add an app or widget to a screen (I know this is available through NOVA launcher, just talking about out of the box here).
Not sure if I'm sold on the new app drawer layout.
Bottom line is, since I flashed ICS (Evervolv first, now AOKP) to try it out, it's become my daily driver. The features match up with what I'm looking for, and what's currently missing will surely be fixed soon enough thanks to the awesome dev's working on it. As always, it boils down to what you want and what you can live without.

I think thats what it was, for me at least. I couldn't wait to hop on board the ICS train. I was flashing everytime someone released a new alpha!
It eventually died down for me, and now I am settled back down nicely with CM7..
So far the only ICS that has impressed me was 4.0.3 sense 4.0. Other than that I can't seem to see what all the hype is. Aosp ICS in my opinion(yes my opinion) is its plain and poorly colored. Maybe I don't want a turquois blue UI. Idk. Just MY opinion as I know everyone has their own ideas thoughts and feelings. Don't get me wrong I do like some of the features(some which evo4g may not see) but in time I believe it will get better. Everything starts from bottom. GB was the same way when it surfaced for our evos. Well see what the future brings!
