Thinking of doing a Hard Reset, any tips or advice? - Venue Pro General

I've had my 16GB DVP since late Dec 2010. I have generally been very pleased with it so far. I haven't had any of the crashing or freezing problems that so many other people seem to be having with their DVP. Like everyone else, I have been dealing with the usual WP7 bugs and glitches, but nothing I would call phone or DVP specific.
The only major annoyance I have had is with the weather apps and their live tiles. I have tried them all numerous times each and the Live Tiles just will not stay updated. They will work OK for a day or two, but then lock up and fail to update for days at a time. Eventually, I just uninstall the app and move onto another one.
Today was the final straw. I bought the new Weather Live app for $0.99 because of its' supposed excellent Live Tile features. I installed it at 11 am ET. It is now almost 2 pm ET and the Live Tile has not done a thing. Of course, I have enabled Live Tile in the settings, set it to update Hourly and turned on the GPS Location. Launching the app gives me the current weather conditions just fine, but the Live Tile remains unchanged.
This leads me to believe my Live Tiles are just hosed and I should probably do a Hard Reset to see if that helps. I have no problem doing that. I really don't have anything personal stored on the phone. I've sync'd with the Zune software on my PC, and all of my emails and contacts are backed up on the cloud.
The only thing I am concerned about losing are my call history and any loose phone numbers that aren't associated to any of my backed up contacts. I'm not sure if any of these are saved to the SIM like the old feature phones used to do.
So my question is, has anyone ever done a Hard Reset and lost anything they thought should have been backed up? Is there anything I should make sure to back up manually? Any other tips or advice? TIA.

Advice? Yes, don't waste your time!
I just did a hard reset yesterday. The only thing I reinstalled was the weather channel app and another app that uses toast notifications. Those are the only 2 live tiles that I have running on my device for 24 hours now and the weather tile has only updated once.
I've now given up on live tiles and am waiting for mango for the fix. Don't bother hard resetting and losing all your information.

All of a sudden, alarms don't work!

Background:
ATT8525 with the ATTWM5 Rom
All of a sudden no alarm will work on this device. I have SPB Time and City Time Alarm both installed and ever since Saturday morning my daily alarms do not sound.
Thought it was a fluke at first but I've been playing with it tonight trying several different times and nothing seems to work. I even tried the built in WM5 alarm and it didn't work either.
This isn't related to the no sound issue I've inquired about in the past as right now all my OTHER sounds are working.
I've also done multiple soft resets and I've checked and double checked that my phone has the correct time and time zone.
Any ideas?
Thanks
It sounds like you have some duplicate/out of date/bad notifications in your notifications queue.
First do a full backup (just in case) then:
You need to use a 3rd party app such as Checknotifications (free), Memmaid, SK tools.
Use one of these to eliminate duplicate notifications and see if things start working again. If not, unfortunately you will have to go through each one manually. Look at the ones beginning Calendar and Clock. Make sure that the time/date for these is in the future. Delete the ones that are not. Leave alone the other notifications some of these are necessary for other processes.
See if it works now.
If not, you may have to do a hard reset. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply.
Memaid did the trip as it was a built up queue of notifications. Not sure what caused that but at least it's fixed without having to do a hard reset.
This never happened with my 8125, strange.
Also, this fixed a couple of other issues I was having.
My 8525 had stopped pairing with my automobile's BT and it did this morning, and the last few days the phone and stopped doing the first active sync of the day (at 0700) automatically. It did this morning.
Looks like I may check into purchasing Memaid. It's a handy little program.
I have to admit, it's one of the first apps on any device I own. Especially now that it has a reg editor too.
Beware, you may need to do the notifications queue clearout quite frequently, just keep an eye on it for a day or 2. I've found that if you use windows live mobile, this puts 3 or 4 duplicates on your system at every soft reset! Don't you just love microsoft applications?

Gee I wonder if the iPhone's have to do this?
Sorry, couldn't resist.
They probably would have to if they were allowed to install 3rd party applications!

Oh thank you.
At first I thought you all were just ganging up on my since I'm across the pond from you all. <G>
Kinda back to my original question.
What is up with the Notification Queue? I currently have 37 "time based" entries. A few of these are obvious. But I have a whole mess named "\\.\Notifications\NamdedEvents\Scripts:0x0023B3D0" and a couple of dozen more with similar hexadecimal(?) endings.
They are all "dated to run" on September 26, 2007 at various times of the morning.
The thing is, nothing is in my calender on that date. So what in the world are those entries? Are they safe to delete?
Thanks
Don't mind us, if you play with Windows mobile, you just have to have a laugh as often as possible (makes up for all the crying!).
On your alarms/reminders/notifications etc, do you have the setting on for 'flash light'? If so, do you have this set for no limit? If so, I think these are your scripts as above. If they are set as no limit, I think they go on for around 40 days or so. So probably they relate to an event 40 ish days before 26 September.
They might also relate to some other software you are running. I understand TomTom puts some strange notifications in.
If so, they are PROBABLY fine to delete. As long as you do a full backup before touching them, then if it all goes pear shaped, just restore your backup.
Whatever you do, don't touch the repllog.exe entries. These relate to activesync and if you delete these, you will have a lot of trouble with synchronising.
If, however you do accidentally delete a repllog file that you should't, Mike has written an excellent guide on how to get it back!

Thanks. I think the message notification thing is the reason. I do have the flash light checked and their seems to be a correlation between the entries and the number of messages I currently have in OL.
Thanks again for all the help!
Hopefully I can return the favor sometime.

I hope by now you have solved your (our) problem. I was able to fix my problem by installing a free program from Burr Oak called Wakeup Tweak.
I never ever RAN the program - I just installed it. During installation, it asked me if I wanted to use default notifications and I said yes.
I then tested an appointment alarm (before running Wakeup Tweak) and the alarm worked.
Hey there... I used to have the same problem under WM5 (I think it was a known fault and the idea was to fix that for WM6). My reminders didn't work, and my alarm, initially came on but I could not dismiss it, and so came back on the moment I switched my phone back on etc. I found that using Pocket Mechanic and then deleting all 'clock.exe' entries i which have the word obsolete added under the type column solves the problem. I think some people have experienced problems doing this and it messed up their device. I, personally, never had any problems but you may want to back up things just in case. Again, it's not a long-term solution and I had to do that every couple of weeks. The deleting of duplicate notification did not, for me, restore reminders etc. I have to say ever since I upgraded to WM6 I have not had this problem so I guess Microsoft fixed this issue.

Alarm clock sound not going off

Sometimes my alarms sound doesn't go off. I've checked all the settings, the sound is turned up, the profile is normal. The only way I can fix it, is to reset my phone. Then it works for a while.
It's happen to me a few times where I've woken up pass the time I've suppose to wake up. This morning I work up 2 hours late! . Lucky I didn't miss an important exam or assignment deadline.
I'm using the latest 3VOLUTION SERIES Rom for maple.
Anyone have any suggestions to fix it?
I'm having the same problem now. I've searched around, and can't seem to find a solution. Some suggest it's an installed app, but i can't pinpoint it.
Any thoughts?
(I have the Snap/Maple, with default rom, branded to Mobilicity in Canada).
Alternatively, are there any decent alarm apps out there that don't weight down the phone? I can't seem to figure out how to get more than 2 alarms on the phone.
Thanks for any help.

you should use a SmartTweaker.2008.v2.0 to fix it and you can get it through http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=664195
It may not have anything to do with rebooting. Your alarm might have failed due to receiving a notification at the same time:

Thanks for the suggestion, but there's little point in paying for that app when almost all of those tweaks can be done for free by other apps or direct registry editing. Also, I don't see anything on there that addresses the silent alarm problem.

Thanks for the info. This is both sad and alarming (sorry, had to throw in the pun). I guess we better hope we don't get an email/text around the time we're expecting to wake up!
FYI, I have installed Alarm Master (http://www.connectivetools.com/alarmmaster.html). Looks simple, but has a fair bit of features. Incidentally, the regular alarm regained it's voicebox and started working properly right after I installed this. Maybe a coincidence. I don't think message updates were causing the alarm to be silenced, but I can't be sure. For now, I'll keep using Alarm Master, since it has more option, and I don't want to risk Windows' alarm not going off in the morning.
Still haven't figured out how to get more than 2 alarms, though.
Alarms versus notifications
I have only had my alarm fail due to an incoming notification once, at least as far as I know. But yeah, I laughed out loud (out of frustration) when I read T-Mobile's note about "expected behavior". It's like they are saying, okay, we know that your alarm could fail but that's what it's supposed to do! I liked your pun, by the way, and appreciate the fact that I'm not the only one that finds T-Mobile's answer both sad and funny!
Anyways, I think unless you are getting notifications every minute of the day, it's probably a remote chance that both will happen exactly at the same time. You can also take the added precaution of having your notifications audible, I suppose, so that if one cancels your alarm at least you'll hear an alert for the new notification.
As for the two alarm problem you mentioned, what about using the calendar as an extra alarm? You'd have the two default alarms plus you could set calendar events to alarm whenever you wanted extra ones. In fact, I rarely use the two default alarms as I have all of my appointments set to alarm through the calendar. I have my work schedule and stuff like that set as reoccuring events synced with Outlook.
I hope that helps! I'm still really enjoying my Dash 3G despite a few minor annoyances. All phones have 'em, I think the trick is just learning how to avoid 'em.
Good point. I forgot about the calendar since I don't really use it. Since i upgraded to Win 7, I've had touble syncing my windows phones and kinda gave up on it. I recently managed to get my phone to sync, but I don't use outlook, so it's a bit of a hastle to get everything into the calendar.
I originally got my Dash as a temporary replacement, but have found it to be surprisingly capable. After customizing the home panels, adding a GPS (Tomtom), and a few apps and games, (and learnind to avoid the annoyances), I'm pleasantly suprised with what I can do with this phone.
I'm still using Windows XP so I haven't had any trouble syncing. But you should be able to set calendar events on the phone itself fairly easily. You could set an alarm for every minute of the day if you wanted just by making calendar events. I do prefer setting appointments in Outlook because you can get really creative with reoccuring events that happen at weird intervals. But when I'm on the go and need to set a reminder for an appointment, I just make one on the phone.
I, too, think this is a great phone. I use it for business all the time, especially e-mail, Word, Excel, and Adobe Reader. I also really like having the Notepad because I can use it combined with Word at the same time. I use a bluetooth keyboard with it so that I can touch-type but I like the built-in keyboard, too. I also really like the Task Manager, it's so much better for switching and managing programs than when I was using a Blackberry.
My only disappoint with this phone is that there isn't a flash with the camera but it's not usually an issue. Otherwise, it's easily the best phone that I've ever had.

[Q] News stopped updating

On Nov 17 my news widget abruptly stopped updating. Manual, Auto, existing sources, new ones, NOTHING makes any difference at all. I've tried disabling AdFree, mucking about with all the settings there are, which were all correct when I started, and various other things none of which made any difference at all.
From searching the forums it sounds like if I restore factory defaults the News app may start working again, until the next time it stops of course.
I'm not certain what "restore factory defaults" means wrt the OTA update but I'm not sure I care either. I have a LOT of work into this and getting the RSS reader to work for an indeterminate period is not worth doing it all again.
I did see reference to AnyRSS, so maybe that's an option. But before I abandon the news app/widget entirely I thought I'd put a post of the forums for my actual device.
One option that I haven't tried but is interesting is in Froyo Task Killer I can delete all the app's data. This conceivably could wipe out whatever bad data is preventing it from syncing. It could also make a damn mess deleting files that would insure a Sense crash until a factory refresh.
So, simple question, does anyone know the cause of this apparently rather pervasive problem? Is there any way to fix it other than "reinstall the OS". Shocking how many things that will "fix". But while it often, perhaps even usually, works it is NEVER a reasonable alternative. Thank you micro$oft for lowering the expectations of an entire industry.

winMo free and loving it
When mine stopped updating on the 24th that was the last straw for me and I ditched Sense and began using LauncherPro Plus. It is much more customizable and super stable. You lose the news widget and the clock widget, but those can be replaced easily. Clock replaced with Fancy Widget Pro and the news I have given up on for now until I find a suitable replacement. I just haven't had the time to find one yet. Whatever you do DO NOT erase the data on the news program/widget. I did and I lost all the feed options. I had to nandroid restore to get them back. I would just find an alternative and give up on the Sense version. I know this isn't a great answer, but I'm in the same boat.

[Q] Dead Live Tiles?

Hi there,
Not sure if this is a Quantum issue or a WP7 issue, but some of my Live Tiles aren't so "Live" anymore.
Particularly Weatherbug doesn't update anymore. The app is fine, but the tile is not.
I removed locations, changed Live Tile settings, uninstalled, reinstalled, unpinned it, rebooted, re-pinned it, etc.
I'm wondering if it is a another app that does Live Tile things that busted it. For instance, OMG (the game) wouldn't start when I installed the really terrible Amazon app (which put itself in Games for some reason). Once the Amazon app was gone, OMG was fine.
Just wondering if anyone else has seen this, and if they found a fix.
Thanks,
TTFN
Gregg
Same issue with weatherbug... only updates if I go into the app and look at the weather...
I was having the same problem too, but it fixes itself somehow... maybe on weatherbug's side?
Drop Weatherbug and switch to Weather Channel. It's better anyway.
I think it was an app conflict. The AP News app also had a stuck Dead Tile.
After I moved Smug Seven off the home screen, opened AP a couple times, the WeatherBug and AP tiles started to update again. It wasn't just WeatherBug. I think it was an implementation bug in Smug Seven (it was a new app feature back then).
As an aside (since nobody asked)... I had both Weather Channel and WeatherBug installed. And a couple other weather things. I ditched Weather Channel because the design of the app is a total afterthought for WP7. I didn't like their iPhone app either. Weather Channel wanted you to buy their real app. Maybe they have the same strategy here too.
Anyway, to me it looks cluttered. It could just be the background image fighting with the foreground info. It also hung on me a few times.
Visually, I think WeatherBug's app looks cleaner and has more of the details I like. It also leverages the Metro metaphor's strengths (like being able to flick between summaries and hourly forecasts). It has a few weird things too and some of the features may be hidden to some users (like tapping the city name).
At least we have some apps to choose from!

[Q] Live tiles stopped updating on my 8X

For reasons I don't understand, most if not all of my live tiles stopped updating with in the last week or so. Mi have tried every "fix" I can find posted on Microsoft help and WPCentral forums, ( soft reset, stopping background agents, unpunished and pinning tiles, etc) but nothing has resolved the problem although others report that these have. I am heading for a hard reset, something I very much don't want to do.
Looking for any solutions, suggestions, etc.

I've never had this issue on WP8 but on WP7 I had something almost similar to your issue. It turned out to be an app; If I remember correctly on mine it was a battery meter app, it was conflicting with my other apps over background usage or something. Try deleting any recent apps that use the background services especially the free apps. I recently had another issue where my battery was draining, after delete recently downloaded free apps one at a time the issue went way.

Should have tried that, but I did a hard reset. Everything now working, but it took a lot of time.
Many WP users are experiencing this problem, Microsoft must look into it,coz Live tiles are what differentiate WP from other OS.
