I have $50 for the person that roots my EVO. I dont mean next year either. Im talking rooting it in a timely manner. I fully understand devs have lives, and new phones their trying to root in some cases I just wanna add a little incentive for getting it done. I just bought this EVO last night after returning my 3rd Nexus S 4G due to radio issues. The rep told me it would have 2.2.1 out of the box but did not. Although it runs very smooth with 2.3.3 on it, I prefer aosp over sense.
that sux man! is a return an option? I would think you could find a reputable seller that knows the product better than who you received your evo from! my local sprint store can hook up deals on used evos in "exelent condition" check your local store if it isn't corporate. Some sellers on ebay actually know what the product too. that's what the message feature is for. look for someone in florida!!
I payed $100 for this one and have black tie protection so i wouldnt want a used one. But root would be nice. I know it will happen eventually, just want the devs to know that there are people that appreciate their work and time. And, hopefully get someone to take time away from the 3D also
Who is working on rooting it? Is anyone?
no body cares about this phone anymore. HOWEVER, IF YOU TAKE IT TO A SPRINT STORE! ASK THEM TO DOWNGRADE IT FOR YOU! lol! no joke. just do it! BUT you must know the difference between a corp store and franchise

LOL, they cant downgrade it any more than we can at this point. There is way to many EVO 4G owners for this thing to go unrooted forever. I hope...
Your best bet at this point is to swap the phone on Craigslist along with the $50. There are a few folks who don't use the phone no more and didn't do the upgrade. There are ads on Craigslist for evo trades only. They get to make $50 but still sell the evo for there asking price.

Thats something I thought about, I just dont want to lose the insurance from Best Buy. I plan on buying the Photon when it drops anyway, so I guess its not a huge deal. I guess I just thought for $50 someone would take a few hours(or whatever) to figure it out. Its all about the downgrade, that much I know. Hopefully someone figures out a way to get it to work.

no sprint store has that capability, only htc does , and even contacting them directly about it just produces a nice " we cannot downgrade it because it would render your device innoperable" ......
im sorry but short of desoldering nand and reflashing ...yeah...just wait till they are tired with the 3d and somone MIGHT get back to evo, but for now, i think there are thousands of us on the "i kinda hate my phone now" boat , someone will eventually do it i guess, i personally think this release is a trainwreck , and id rather have stock froyo than this tbh but we are pretty boned for the time being..

downgrading/rooting 2.3.3 its the same problem,i believe the hboot simply WILL NOT let you install anything other than a signed , higher version newer date ruu
unless someone finds a way to change the version number on the ruu package itself (short of impossible to do judging by what little understanding i have of code and programming) you cant install anything thats the thing...
the hboot on the 3d is similar i believe to the evos hboot, once they crack that one , that knowledge may make doing it on evo 4g a possible task, but im just monitoring the pertinent threads/channels at this point until i can upgrade on sprint or i manage to sell my evo so i can get a 3d
I chose this unrooted EVO 4G over the 3D last night. The 3D is really nice, but the screen size is a little narrow, and that was one of my big issues with the NS4G.
Well, this offer will stand for a few weeks. Ill say August 8th is the cutoff for me to give $50 to the person that gets us root. If my phone is rooted by that day, the person that figured it out is getting paid.

And if they dont send me one with 2.2, I just swapped a brand new phone for a refurb.
do it 3 times and you get a brand new device
Fraudulant insurance claims are probably one of the main reasons the manufacturers are locking their phones down. Im not saying not to do it, Im saying I prefer not to do it.

and at the end its just going to cost both him and the company money, and solve nothing, as all phones come with 2.3.3 now, even more so if its a new one....
so as others have said, your best bet is craiglist or waiting pretty much
as of thursday no they dont i just got my refurb 2.2 with black tie its free to replace for any reason but lost or stolen

Android 2.2 went live Aug 3, 2010 and it was rooted Aug 26, 2010. Which for those of you who can't add thats 23 days. Android 2.3 went live June 15, 2011 and its July 10, 2011 which puts us at 25 days. So I would say that we are right on course for something to be announced soon.

So i call them up last Friday asking if they had any EVOs and the guy says "No but if you pre-order now we guarantee you will have it next week" so I decide to go with the shack due to the extra $20 in accessories and the fact that he guaranteed it to be there.
so I called this past Wednesday to ask if they had them in yet and the people told me it would be here on Friday, So i wait until today then call them at noon and ask, they tell me "we are waiting on the truck" and ALL throughout the day that is the only excuse i get is the truck and to call back in an hour or a half an hour until I finally went in and the guy says " Oh they will be here Monday" so I ask "why was i guaranteed Friday and given the run around all day?" he responds "I will take your name down for the manager and you will definitely have one Monday".
I feel like they lied through there damn teeth to have me buy the $50 card and lock me in or at least make a $50 profit because really what do they sell that is worth spending the cash on?......... then I will have to get another $50 to cover the gift card if I were to buy from another store.

Think that's bad? try getting a replacement from them if your Evo is getting more mess up (screen is raising higher and major light leakage now). I called every radioshack up to 50 miles from where I'm from and all of them saying there's none in stock and are only doing pre-order or so their saying. Who knows if their saying out of stock only to lure the new customer with their preorder crap. Very fustration I'm telling you.
I know warranty is up to 1 year for manuafacture defect and also have the 7 dollars insurance through Sprint but I just want to go in and out with a new device without waiting since this is a manufacture defect.

I know the feeling, mine has major light leakage now, and I called Sprint because I had ordered mine on release day, and put me on hold only for some rep to tell me they are not taking orders over the phone even more, even for defective products, I had to go to a corporate store and get put on a waiting list. I was like WTF? Went to the corporate store and they would only tell me they would add me to a waiting list, and didn't know when the phones would be in, they are estimating 1 week. Store Manager didn't even apologize, that made me even madder, thinking about telling them to shove it and wait on the next new android phone to come out, especially since I bought mine off contract, bought my wife's with her upgrade and no problems with hers.
Have you ever worked in retail? Honestly, most of these people will tell you what they know, and a lot of these things are out of their control.
Contrary to popular belief, most people that help you at retail stores and restaurants are not out to ruin your life and steal your money, wife, job, etc. Their normal people just like you, and most of them do really try to help you out.
So cut 'em some slack!
I walked into a Radio Shack today in downtown Miami and bought 2. They were the last two left in all of Miami! I feel so lucky
I don't think they "lied through their teeth" exactly. Odds are Fridays are their normal delivery days for product. Shipments can get delayed. End of story.

Hardly. Nothing about Radio Shack now represents the old Radio Shack. I thought they were supposed to cater to hobbyists instead of immitating Best Buy!
Here is another one....On June 16th I found a new "in stock" Evo sold by Amazon. I went through the checkout and selected "overnight" shipping. I filled out the payment info and just as I clicked down on the confirm purchase button I saw the small print at the bottom saying that the order should arrive on June 30th!! 2 friggin weeks?!?!? Luckily I hadn't released my mouse button and got out of it.
lol, thats retail for you. reguarless they have to say they guarantee it, because thats radioshack's policy, who wants to take a loss from their job. their not worried, so at the end of the day its not their problem. just like anywhere else in retail.. you WILL get the phone but at the end of the say the wait is your loss lol
radio shack sucks
So I went into the Sprint store to pick up my brand new Evo replacement. Yes they give you NEW ones if you have a hardware defect and demand one, not a ****ty refurb. The refurb they initially wanted to give me had 3 huge scratches on the screen - go **** yourself Sprint. Anyway, I get to the store and this guy is with a salesman asking about what phone he should get. The salesman right away goes to the most expensive Evo and Epic phones and says you NEED an Android phone. Whatever, I thought, salesmen work on commission and this type of behavior is not out of line necessarily. Next the salesman says, "You have to pay an extra $10 a month to get this phone but thats because you get 4G" I though to myself... we pay the extra $10 because we get 4G? Weird... Then the guy asked him when they would be getting 4G where they are the the salesman said in 1 month - mind you this is midsized Colorado city with NO 4g towers. He said it would be live in 1 month. At this point I made a comment to my girlfriend saying this salesman is a bullshitter. Next, the salesman tells the guy that the Evo has the best resolution out of ANY smart phone out there. At this point I just wanted to punch this guy right in the face. Not only is this not true but it has just a regular LCD screen. Compared to the Galaxy or the iPhone, it just has a large. The salesman also went on to say that 3G is fast enough to do anything 4G does in the meantime before its out such as stream high definition youtube videos.
I don't get it... should I have said something? I didn't want to ruin this guys commission but at the same time he is blatantly lying to a customer so he can get him down for 2 years. The ****ed up thing is Sprint will never believe him if he says a rep lied to him about any of this stuff. I still feel bad for this guy - he obviously wasn't the most technologically sophisticated cat in the world and he was about to get a real wakeup call.
Knowledge is power.

I honestly don't see how this guy has anger issues. He's simply asking for opinions on whether or not he should've called out a lying salesman. Imo, I say no. Dishonest salesman are worthless, but if you believe everything they tell you cuz you didn't do any research you have only yourself to blame.
Ps. Still waiting to see some sort of worthwhile post from Sporkman.

Anybody who goes to buy anything without doing their own research first and relying on a salesman's word kinda deserves what they get. I believe this on any type of purchase, but especially on anything I would have to sign a contract for.
I work on commission, too, and I don't lie when I sell. With that said, when I am speaking to a customer and another customer pipes up with their opinion I get pissy.
Honestly, if the guys lying about the product he shouldn't be getting his commission so don't worry about that. When found in this situation again, try this - wait for the salesman to leave for a minute, and walk up and mention to the customer "you know I couldn't help overhearing, but I have this product and...." and tell him the truth. The important thing is to not make a scene or accuse the salesman of anything. Just let the customer know that you don't think what you overheard was correct, and suggest to him that he go online to check it out, and do some research before taking your word on it, or the salesmans. If you don't get a chance to talk with the customer, or the sale guys lies were too over the top, talk to the manager on the way out.

+1. Now I feel bad I didn't do that.
No different than a used car salesman.
I'd be on the fence as well
I am of the type that I research anything that is a significant cost or commitment, (phones, cars, contracts, etc) so I have somewhat diminished sympathy for the average consumer who walks into a store clueless and actually expects to be told the 100% honest truth. There are endless jokes about anything salesmen. Oldie but goodie: How do you know when a salesmen is lying? -- When his mouth is moving.
The only thing that would have held me back on saying anything is if that was my local sprint store that I might need a favor from in the future. If I wrecked a guys comission, I would never expect to be properly helped out by anyone in that store again. (word travels fast in small stores like that)
You never know what kind if guy the customer was either, there are two types of people who use the Evo. The kind that love to tinker/customize/tweak and set things up through learning and discovery (i.e. most of us here) and there are people who just don't give a damn and want it to "work".
This is my first droid phone, I ditched my iphone 3G and ATT beacuse of the endless runaround and BS. I couldn't be happier with my Evo. On that same note, I have a friend who had an iphone, we convinced her to get a droid based phone. A few days later she calls us up *****ing how its "too hard to use" and it never works. This was 100% user error though.
Is it me or is anyone else tired of the android phones being referred to as "Droid'

Eh... They can't say it's for 4G because everyone that doesn't have 4G will complain. Richer data experience is their best excuse right now. Everyone want's 4G but doesn't want to help pay to have it developed. Like I tell all my customers, don't go to the dealership expecting to purchase a Bentley but then complain that you have to put 93 octane gas.

You don't think wanting to punch someone for saying something incorrect about a screen is a bit much?
Although, I do agree, it is hard listening to a salesperson lie to a customer. It could very well be he didn't know he was lying, but that doesn't help much.
I am speculating here....
I don't think we will see a preorder of Xoom this weekend and possibly not an actual release next week . The fact that no announcements have been made from Motorola on release is why I think this. If Motorola wanted to get people excited about this, they would have announced something today. That didn't happen.
I think that Motorola/Google/Verizon (yes Google too because this is the flagship tablet release for Honeycomb) are looking at pricing based on the overwhelming outrage at the $800 price point and are trying to do something to make this a huge launch in favor of Honeycomb. This can be many things. But I think the bottom line, $800 for launch will turn into a flop for the first Android approved tablet and that will not look good. The sales from the first real Android Tablet launch will be dismal at this price point. They may also decide to delay launch until the WiFi only tablets are available and/or a decent subsidized price is offered from Verizon.

Some solid points here. I would further speculate that we will see some sort of Mail in Rebate for 100$. I base this on the rumor that Costco will have the device for 100$ less. The HTC EVO, IIRC, had 200$ subsidy and a 100$ Mail in Rebate which some retailers applied automatically. Though as I say this, I think this won't work as this device, being uncontracted, has no incentives for an in-store instant rebate.
I have been waiting for this device for a while now, and would hate to see it pushed. Your speculation about waiting for a wifi only device could be a good thing though, and at the end of the day I am a team player so I would grit my teeth for that. But only till the end of the month

I am as anxious as you are trust me, but if you look at the overall picture from a general consumer point of view, $800, most people will walk on by and not even consider purchasing it. Add to that, a mandatory $35 activation fee plus minimum $20 one month data and on top of that, required to even get WiFi to work. With taxes, you will spend almost $900 without even buying an accessory. That is insane! And rumors that you cannot initially use the external microSD card slot for more storage without an update AND wait for a 4G upgrade, which we do not know if that is even OTA, wow, that is quite a bit to swallow.
They're running the ad for it this weekend in the sunday paper..it will be there on thursday

We will see. But I can tell you that it will be a big flop at the current price point and needed additional costs for activating WiFi (mandatory $35 Verizon activation fee and $20 one month data). If that is true just to use it as a WiFi device, that would be one of the biggest greediest launches I have ever seen.
well the rumored preorder day is sunday which technically is next week. not much of a speculation by my book.
@keitht
Beside that Costco ad (which may be a Costco thing), there isn't anything out there from Verizon or Best Buy that states activation is required. The leaked best buy playbook from a few days ago didnt even say it was required.
The words were "If customer activates..."
Read the exact details of that Best Buy memo... it doesn't say its mandatory.
As for that leaked Best Buy ad from 10 days ago... that said "activative required" or something... plainly either a draft or hoax because of the spelling issues. On top of that, a self titled MOTO tester here on XDA said they skipped activation in testing and WiFI was fine.
I bet a beer that activation isn't required. Sorry, but I call bogus on this.
Anyhow, the price point worked for the iPad. That was $749 for the 32gb 3G and the Xoom is alot more advanced.
These are all optional words, not mandatory words...

True... we don't know the facts and that is why I am "speculating". Don't get me wrong here as I am in the crowd who has my money aside for this. I am speaking of the majority and from what I understand, the $750 iPad is not the big seller for Apple. $800 as the only option for the Xoom initially is not going to sell like hotcakes especially for an unproven device. And if there are any added costs, that will make matters worse.
arent you just paying for the xoom when you buy it? Isnt the activation fee and data plan charged to your verizon account? isnt that why you can cancel it within 72 hours because you arent actually charged the until after the 72 hours? i cant remember because its been awhile since i actually bought a phone from a store but i think thats how it goes. anyways i doubt its going to pushed back. moto is just being hush hush. Google doesnt need moto to sell alot just enough and then when more honeycomb tablets come out google gets more products out there. Im more suprised google hasnt released the sdk yet so devs can get ready to make apps in tablet form.
In addition, Apple made a big deal about the launch date for their device. Motorola has not officially announced anything about release. How will people get excited about this release when they do not know when to line up outside the store?

We're all speculating, I'm just trying to be an advocate against all the negative speculation. All these blog sites post in there headlines the same thing "Xoom + activate required = FAIL". You read the article and its always the same screenshot always the same links....etc...
I'm just trying to keep hope alive, haha... I feel bad for some of the readers here who "refuse" to buy the Xoom because <fill in the blank". I just want to push that it may not be true... its all speculation on media and opinions.

if theres one thing moto knows how to do is market and so does verizon. People will hear about it. The thunderbolt and xoom are already in the swimsuit edition of sports illustrated which is the highest selling copy of SI every year. I'm pretty sure it's coming. expect a release date when preorders go live

Still not feeling warm and fuzzy about the release of something new to compete with iPad at $800+. If $800 is the only option for the next couple months, we will see a lot of negative press for Honeycomb and I don't think that will be good for Google.
Imagine the headlines after 2 months... Only 100,000 Honeycomb tablets sold. Google's entry into the tablet market a complete failure.

the pressure will most likely be on moto for selling it that high. Google wont be taking any heat unless there are some big bugs in honeycomb. From what i have learned watching apple, they arent perfect they send patches just like any other company. i dont think moto expects to beat apple outright, they just want to take some of their share of the market. Yea releasing the $800 model by itself doesnt seem right but i doubt wifi xoom is far behind seeing as we saw it pass through the fcc. Its probably better just to watch and see what happens.

I disagree. Google worked very closely with Moto on this as the flagship Honeycomb God of tablets. Just like Nexus phone. You better believe Google is interested in making this a successful launch.

yea i worded that wrong as not taking any heat but the benefit for google is that they dont have to worry about putting all their money on one OEM. If moto doesnt sell many xooms, they can go back to samsung or lg who are next in line. Samsung is one of companies who sold as much or more android phones as moto. Also 3D is a big thing lately so that means LG could see success. There's also the other companies who make more budget-friendly tablets like viewsonic. Google will probably take a small hit if inital xoom sales arent what is expected but they will be far from out of the game. The community is excited about honeycomb so there will be a demand for it. As for the average consumer, they will get to demo the xoom and see if its for them.
At least they got a bunch of hot chicks to attend the Xoom party:
https://picasaweb.google.com/ocnnfeed/MaximPartyPoweredByMOTOROLAXOOM#
Well, the bestbuy.com/xoom page has been updated a little.. it used to say 'page requested not found'.. and now it finds a lengthy URL path, but nothing on the page. My guess is they will open the page when the stores open at 10am ET. Everything's a guess though. We'll see in 1 day and 30 minutes. Or at midnight tonight with an 'in-store only' note.

Xoom Release
I just talked to BestBuy and they said that the official release will be on the 24th for $799. I also asked about the WiFi only version but they didn't have any information on that. Does anyone know if they will be released close to each other?
my phone is barely working and i got hosed by my 3rd party insurance. I would like to get out of contact. Sell my used evo and get a new one. any ideas. i have heard of changing your prl and roaming on other towers to get them to bumb you. any other ideas?
fix the phone!
whats wrong with it?
That will take forever. If you live or work somewhere where you get crappy service, that's how I got out of VZW (easier with Sprint since they have crappier coverage most places). Or just sell Evo to help pay ETF.
How far are you into your contract? Your ETF goes down every month, so maybe it won't be too bad. You may also be able to ***** enough about the premiere policy changes that they let you out.
Also, what's wrong with your phone, maybe we can help you fix it so you don't need to cancel.

Fix it - it's not Sprints fault your third party insurance screwed you over and now you want to screw over Sprint. Man up and pay your ETF or sell your broken phone to help pay the ETF.
This is why companies keep raising rates and taking away perks, everyone wants to rob everyone but want the companies to keep prices low.

nice but tried that they dont want me
my screen is cracked but thats the least since its barely cracked like a square inch at the corner. But before that two sections of the phone middle top and middle bottom dont work. to explain better around 50 % or my screen is unusable. and my notification bar doesnt work but i can pull it down in my menu screen. tried to get the screen fixed was told that the glass is one thing and that the screen now working is another thing having to do with the underbelly of the screen. would run me around 150 to fix

How exactly did you get "hosed" by the insurance? You broke your phone, you pay the $100 deductible and you get a new phone.

First, thank you for your service, and I'm glad you made it home safely.
Back to OP and this escape-from-contract thing, is Sprint's service REALLY that bad?? I'm a new convert and all, but I'll tell you, coming from AT&T, I have to say, Sprint's coverage and call quality are better than Big Blue's and I'm getting good (not always great) 4G speed in and around NYC, as well as Miami (but not so much in Baltimore), areas I frequent a lot.
As for your device woes, your ETF starts at $200 right? But fixing your phone will be an estimated $150. Fix your phone. Stay with Sprint a bit longer, reduce your ETF, then sell your repaired Evo on eBay. Profit.

You signed on the dotted line. Time to learn a thing or two about responsability and legal obligations. You can:
Put your big boy undies on and ride out the rest of your contract term
Go get another phone, and keep paying for this one until the contract is up
Pay the early termination fee
I love this "the world owes me something" mentality that everyone has now days.
thanks.

no Service issues. Which was mostly true though. Several Note 2 replacements and SAME issue kept happening Was not a network issue as did not happen on any other device I stuck my sim in. I think it had to do with the area and the phone not liking how it kept wanting to connect to LTE
I tried a few days ago by calling in but they wouldn't budge for me, my contract ends in Jun 2013. I just did a test call to my nearest ATT Company store & mentioned that I'm thinking of leaving to TMO if I wasn't able to get an early upgrade for $199. They basic said ok cya in not so many words but would be willing to do an early upgrade for $499. Very disappointed with this but their lost. I;ll try calling AT&T in a few days when I make up my mind in staying if I plan to stay with AT&T to see if I can get an early upgrade. I'll give it a few tries before giving up if they turn me down.

Hey be patient. You cant always get your way. They gave you a date which is one month away. Are you going to leave every carrier that doesnt give you your way? Geez. Good luck in life with that kind of mindset.
My upgrade was supposed to be this September. But I got it for $199 at the store on launch.
I did. I've been eligible since January. Opened contract march of 2012. But after some bad customer service I'm getting my s4 delivered tomorrow free of charge.

anyways, If they don't want to give in to a loyal long term customer in good standing then so be it. I will leave any carrier if I find one that is cheaper for me & family & has better things to offer.

I'm jealous. Enjoy your new phone!
Walmart ATT mobility center moved my upgrade date from May 4th, to May 1st (today) and I got mine. Loving it so far. Can't complain about $168 at wally world!
I switched to AT&T from Sprint back on December 31, 2012. I got the Galaxy S III and last month I was having issues with making calls and getting GPS signal. After the troubleshooting failed, they went ahead and did a warranty replacement. When I got the refurbished phone, I told them that I wasn't going to accept it because someone returned the phone for a reason (and not to mention I hate the idea of refurbished phones as a consumer). After being transferred to several agents, one guy said he would send me a brand new Galaxy S III (unopened). In addition, he let me get an early upgrade to the S4. I will be selling me unopened Galaxy S III on Craigslist to make up the money that I spent on the S4 (not to mention a little profit).
Personally ill buy refurb over anything in most cases. Reason being most consumer electronics companies hand inspect/ fix returned devices broken or not! Meaning better quality control vs buying your new s4 of the assembly line which may or may have not been checked by a real human.. Think about it. Even though usually buying refurb results in worse warranty though..
