Can a non oem car charger kill battery? - Vibrant General

i bought this car charger from ebay from my vibrant for 10 bux. when i went to canada this was like 3 weeks ago and since i got back my battery life was never the same it dies pretty quick. what can cause this

I would avoid the cheap generic chargers. Go with the T-Mobile or Samsung OE car chargers. Purchase a new battery if you think it's the source, they're pretty cheap on eBay.

I don't think the charger did that. I have made some Frankenstein chargers that have never affected the battery. I would guess the charge controller in the phone crapped out, but not because of the non OEM charger.
The thing you plug into the wall or cigarette lighter doesn't know or care about what phone or battery you have. it just gives the power. it doesn't tell the phone to give you the "UNPLUG YOUR PHONE" message, the controller in the phone does that.
Go to powerstream.com for info on cells, batteries, and charging.
Think about this...if you have your phone plugged into your car BEFORE you start it, what happens? The charger goes dead, then comes back. That is way more stressful on ANY charger.

Off-topic, but it is bad on the battery to leave the phone plugged in all night, with the phone asleep but not off (i.e., the phone remains plugged in long after it finished recharging)? I do this, as I suspect many others do... I was under the impression that the phone cuts the cycle so there's no "overcharge" issue. Thanks.

chargers shouldn'ty hurt your battery. I've NEVER owned a OEM car charger in my life, and you know now that i think about it I think the crappy $12.00 charger in my car is the same one I bought for my Razor back in 2005, I've used it for my Jasjar, N95, my Gf's chocolate, her Blackberry and now my Vibrant no issues.
as for overcharging, phones like most electronics, should have a built in switch that switches to trickle charge after completion. also batteries no longer use memory Cell technology so again no issues there. I only charge my phones at night and I leave them all night no issues. no dead batteries, no exploding phones, no overheating etc.

AC Charging problem with original charger & new battery

Hi!
I had a battery probelm (same one everyone else seemed to get with there 1yr old uni) where it cuts out at 60% due to the voltage from the battery dropping below the threshold really fast.
Anyway I got a new battery .. my old one was 1650ma (or something like that) I got this new one which is 1750ma (or something like that).. definitely different.
Now I plug my original charger (5v 1a) into the pda and the charge light turns on .. I leave it for an hour and the battery hasn't charged any.. in fact its lost charge as you'd expect if it had been left switched on with no supply.
So.. I plug my motorola krzr charger (5v 550ma) into it and go for a shower/sh*t/shave come back and the battery has gained 10%.. great! atleast I can charge it now.
I also have a desktop cradle charger (5v 1a), same problem.. it sits there forever and a day and discharges... no charge.. (I only got it when I got my new battery so could not prove it before hand)
USB charging works with no problems (not from the cradle one though). So my question is ... Why?
Could it be something to do with my new battery?? I got it from PDAAddons and they've always been good in the past so I believe I can rule out it being a fake.
My new battery is a Li-on Poly.. I've got to admit I didn't look at my old one to see if that was a poly too ... was definitely a li-on though.
I can live with using my moto charger on my exec but unfortunately the ac adapter for my cradle is of a different connector type (female pin sleeve thingy like nokia) so before I search the world for a 5v 550ma version I could do with knowing if i'm barking up the wrong tree and about to waste my money..
Any electronics whizzes in the house say ho!
anyone? :''-(
Aahaahaa!
I'm here! Now, what you say sounds very interesting and yet very strange, why?
- Normally more current from the charger should be better, you cannot put in the PDA more current than it's factory maximum (which I don't know how much it is, but that's not a problem), the internal charger (inside the PDA) knows how much it is and how to limit, also takes care of the right charging profile for your battery.
- You don't have to worry about the exact battery type you bought, boths are Lithium, so chargind profiles are mostly the same, these (LiIon and LiPoly) are "exchangeable" usually (I've heard of no problems until now, since several years I mean).
- If your battery is discharging means only one thing, you're not puttin current into the battery, you're taking it out of it! So, either you might have a deffective charger, a deffective charging circuit (the one inside the PDA) or a defective battery.
- You can charge the battery with your Moto's charger, so battery is probably ok, you have used your original charger/craddle until now, so they might be ok, you have charged one battery at least to 10% so PDA should be ok.
What can it be?
Possibilities are:
Slightly deffective PDA's internal charging circuit, the fact that you can charge with a lower rating charger (the one for your Razr, thing that I've done myself two weeks ago), might point to this, because you have already "limited" the maximum current to 550mA (Razr's charger max current).
Slightly different battery, most of the batteries do have some kind of thermal protection circuit inside (chip + temp sensor, etc.), if the behavior of this circuit is not "compatible" somethin strange can happen, however I personally consider this option not to be the best.
One or two of your chargers might also be somehow "deffective", why? Your original battery might be ok and you are just having problems with your chargers or your High capacity chargers (the original one and that from the craddle) have some problem to give enough juice to your batteries.
I surely might proceed as follows:
try to charge both batteries with a stand alone charger, this is not an easy task, because Lithium batteries are the most "delicate" types, charging method is the "strangest" one, I have two stand alone battery chargers that came as gift with some Nokia batteries I bought from an Ebay seller, eventually, I could give you the full schematic so you can construct it (if you want and if you can).
In this way I will not have any more suspects from the batteries.
Second, test each of my chargers, it can be done by connecting a medium -and suitable- load to each charger for some minutes.
A wire wound ceramic resistor should do the trick, ie for the Razr charger (5V, 550mA) I could use a 250mA load, R=V/I, so 5V/.25A equals 20 ohm (1.25W max power, use at least a 2W resistor, 3 or 5W better).
If the internal PDA circuit should be defective, take it to fix or try to fix for yourself.
Hope this helps

There is some anomaly about charging with a plug-in charger. You may have to turn the device on so that it can recognize the charger, then close it and let it turn itself off; or perhaps it's turn it off then on, I'm not sure, but I've encountered similar oddities with both 110v, 220v, and 12v chargers, and I've seen discussion about this anomaly on this and/or other fora. Once you get the AMBER light, you're fine (as long as it's putting out at least +5v; +5.5 is better).
I think it has something to do with its looking for a [non-existent] USB signal along with the voltage under some conditions, but not others, but that's just a wild guess. Anyway, I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with your battery, device, or charger. Hope this helps. Cheers,
Thanks for the reply, I'm 100% that the amber light turns on. Not only that the screen brightens so it definitely knows its connected. I've tried several combinations of turning it off/on etc during the charge/before but nothing seems to make this desktop charger actually put anything in the battery.

Charger that comes with Wing VS other chargers.. Did I make a mistake?

I got a Wing, and it came with that big ass charger that says use only for wing, mda, and dash. Well I JUST now read that on the charger. Its not that I've been using this charger on other devices, its that I've been using my OTHER usb chargers to charge my Wing.
Is this bad?
Im currently using the charger from my BlackBerry Pearl (well, until I found the Wing charger again), am I in any way damaging my battery life? Or perhaps not charing as fast as I should?
Im just curious why you can only use that charger on those phones, and if its so picky, if I'm doing harm using other chargers.
If anyone knows please do tell.
No worries. The tag you see is more of a marketing decision than a limitation of the adapter itself. You can use that safely and normally on any device that requires a standard USB charger. And vice-versa, you can use any standard USB charger to charge your phone with zero adverse effects.
... well, as long as it's not a REALLY cheap charger.
right on.
I didnt know if the "wing charger" had some type of extra output to help charge faster or something.
I use a Motorola Razr car charger and it works just find.
I have noticed once or twice, for some odd reason, sometimes the Wing wouldn't "recognize" when I plugged it in with a razr home charger... like it wouldn't show that it was charging ... but maybe it was just a crappy charger.... I don't know. But I have charged it with a Blackberry 8000 charger with no problems.
I always wondered myself whether or not it would be a problem... bc the Wing's usb plug isn't a "standard" usb, but it's got a weird shape.... but I still think its just a marketing BS technique to get you to buy THEIR like $40 chargers.
Actually it may not damage your device, but may damage others using it the other way around.
Moto RZ charger is 850MA Output
T-Mobile Charger is 1A
Output
After charging my raz on accident with the t-mobile charger it seems like it can no longer hold a regular constant charge...
This also is in effect with any itips/igo adapters there are two tips for the charger, one raz USB, and one for t-mobile higher powered devices
I'm using a Motorola Q charger in the car just fine. Which is nice, because it can also charge the GPS receiver that also has a mini USB jack.
Charging your wing with any min-usb charger (such as the standard motorola ones) is fine...
The only problem you might face is... if your phone is *completely* discharged, you will need the stronger charger to recover it... the Razr chargers and the like don't seem to have the strength to revive a completely 100% dead Herald

DAMNIT!!
I did this too!
I had a wizard I was going to use before I got my wing. It wouldnt charge, I thought the battery was trashed, so I bought a new one.
Though I only spent 10 bucks on the battery, I wish I would of known. Though I bet a real charger for it would of been more then the battery.

Problems with new wall charger. Discharging?

I'm having a problem charging my phone. Long story short, I left my phone charger at work and can't easily go back to get it until next week. I went to Best Buy today and bought another wall charger. It said it was compatible with the HTC EVO, and since the Shift also has microUSB and the same battery, I assumed it would be compatible.
I plugged the phone in and it seemed to be working fine, but a few minutes later I checked on it again and it wasn't charging, although it was still plugged in. I unplugged it and looked at the Battery Status when I plugged it back in. First it says Charging (AC) for about 12 seconds, then changes to Charging (USB) for about 14 seconds. After that the battery icon stops doing the charge animation and the Battery Status says Discharging (instead of the usual Not Charging when it's not plugged in at all). I have tried rebooting but it does this every time.
Anyone have any ideas what's wrong? And if I have to just take it back, how can I be sure this won't happen again? Has someone else bought a charger at Best Buy that actually works for the Shift?
Not sure if it makes a difference but I'm running Evervolv.
Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks guys!
Well I've learned my lesson and only use chargers of the same brand as my phone. With a HTC phone ill only use a HTC charger. I've had a phone just completely die from using a off brand charger and had to get a new phone.

Take it back to best buy and try again, might have just been a faulty unit.
About the only problem I have with chargers are the cheap gas station car chargers, I use boost chargers MOTO cliq,Droid,g2(HTC) them all work fine but the gas station chargers just keep my battery where it was when I plugged it in no matter what I do it won't charge but it won't run dead either I dunno its weird

Thanks for the responses. I think I'll try to exchange it for a different brand and see how that works.
yah i would only use htc chargers... i used to have a longer amazon usb cable i connected and charged with my htc adapter. now i can only use it to transfer data, no charging.
I came to the Shift from the Palm Pre. When I was looking to get extra wall and car chargers for the Pre I was told to be sure and get 1000mA output chargers, that anything less than that was not powerful enough to charge the Pre. I have used those chargers with no problems on the Shift.
On a trip in my girlfriends car I plugged her Shift into her car charger. She also had a Pre and now a Shift, so the same chargers. I noticed on the phone it said "Discharging" I then realized I had replaced her car charger a couple of days earlier because it was falling apart with a new one I found in a drawer. When I looked at the charger it was rated at 750mA. I replaced it with the 1000mA charger and have not had the issue since.

Anyone tried wireless charging ?

Anyone tried wireless charging on DT2 or MXF ? And how was the experience ?
Works, nothing special - overnight charge from 1% to 100%
It works, but many of us have problems with the Qi charger disconnecting charge at 100% and then reconnecting after about 5% has drained. Motorola is looking into it. I may be picky on which Qi charger you use.
Maybe I did not notice this problem - as I put the phone on charge in the evening, until the next morning I take it to work.
I use cheap qi charger from ebay - ~$2.5
Use a ravpower qi charger every night, no issues, phone comes off 100% full, cool to the touch. I know some units I've tried with my Maxx back in the day kept it warm through charging.

Exactly how it should work to prolong battery life. Keeping any battery (especially lithium) full charger for long period of time will significantly decrease its capacity.

Never had a problem with that in the past even with wired chargers. I don't think in recent phones that there is actual current on the battery at all times past 100% whether charging wirelessly or wired. I'm pretty sure it goes into a maintenance mode, but it will still show charging on the display which is the important part. That is important if you use it on your nightstand as an alarm clock with wireless charging. My Sony Z3v had no problems staying in a charge state even after 100% but my Turbo 2 does not which causes it to disconnect. It will reconnect after it loses about 5%. If I don't have it silenced, it will wake me up when it reconnects. It also affects any tasks you have programmed to happen when it is charging.
From my understanding, the first Turbo did not have this problem. I think it cropped up from the inclusion of the powermat charging or maybe something related to the 810 processor. Anyway, just waiting for a definitive answer from Moto.

Have any Qi charger brand to propose ?
I'm using a Samsung Qi puck - not the newer round plastic one, but the older more squared soft-touch one. Works great, I don't have the 100% disconnect issue.
I use the tylt qi charger the desk top one so my phone is sitting at a 60 degree angle. It works great no issues and every morning my phone is at 100% and cool to the touch
This all sounds encouraging. I think it would be helpful if people could also add a few common notes:
charger / model
any case they have on the phone (or not) when using a Qi charger
whether the phone must be in a certain orientation (e.g., horizontal vs vertical) to charge
whether the phone is at 100% - and stays there after a charge
whether the phone is cool / warm / hot once charged
A cleaned up list developed from this would be a good resource for the user community
Tylt works great phone gets warm. Itian charger is cheap from Amazon but is very finicky.

Uhm, that's one of the sillier things I've read today.
If it drains to 5% it's not terribly useful as a charge system regardless.
A charge controller chip is supposed to be designed to PREVENT the problem you just described.
Each charge cycle, regardless of it's form shortens the life of the battery, period. If you charge it up and then let it deplete it like that, you're damaging it as much as if you left it charging.
You kind of need to leave the stupid thing plugged in or in some wireless charge hysteresis loop so that the device isn't drained. In light of the charge system being supposed to keep the battery out of the loop until it needs to charge it again (some threshold below 100%) it shouldn't MATTER if it's "plugged in" and the device won't be pulling from the battery.

I picked up 3 Samsung qi chargers at 6 quid each on offer on Amazon (UK). They work very well although they are more a convenience thing rather than a method of charging. I use one at work. One in the bedroom and one next to the Xbox great for the work desk to keep the device topped up and frees you up from plugging and unplugging constantly BUT.... It takes absolutely ages to charge so you dont go expecting to be dumping your cabled chargers. I use the work one most of the time as I'm out and about a lot and its very useful to be able to just grab the phone without unplugging and placing back on the pad when at the desk. The turbo charger gets used at home more coz in more likely to plug in to that and jump in the shower knowing that I'll have a nice reserve of power for the pub so yes they work as advertised and work well great as a trickle charge device when you ain't in a rush. If anyone is interested ping me and I'll spend some time on giving more detailed stats such as charge times from 0% and model number of the devices I use. Away for work at the mo so probably the weekend

I bought the Raynic Orchard I. It charges the phone just fine, but I noticed that if the phone wants to wake up because it senses movement, it detaches and reattaches to the charter, which gets very annoying. I moved the phone to an angle where it couldn't see me (but I could see it; sensors were under my monitor stand but the rest of the phone was sticking out) and everything went smoothly after that.
Verizon QI charge stand, Verizon case, have to charge upside down
To charge our new Turbo Droid 2 in a Verizon QI stand with the Verizon case on it, the phone must be upside down. It's OK if out of the case. We have a car QI 'base' which it won't charge in either; probably exact same issue, whatever that is. Any ideas appreciated!

How many chargers do you have/own..

First thread.. not here to start any issues..
Well quick question, how many chargers do you guys use/own? Since it's Dash charge and we are unable to use any other bricks due to the Dash Charging capabilities how many should a OP user have to be fully effecient.
For me.. i will have three when my new shipment comes in from OP. Used the 5$ they gave me for the delay and took off shipping (paid 29$) for an extra charger. I also bought a 3t charger on Offer Up for 5$ lol. and the stock charger.
I just dont want to be left with a dead phone when i can easily find a socket and plug it in for 15 min for a nice boost.. :good::good:
I bought an additional one to make the total of 2. One will permanently be in my bedroom where I plug it in overnight, and the other will be downstairs in my den/office where I spend most my time whenever I'm at home, during the day.
I'll also just be using that second charger as a to-go charger if I ever need to take it with me, so 2 total chargers seem like the perfect amount! I don't want to spend any more money on a third charger anyway lol
I'm in the same boat. Just couldn't believe someone was selling their dash charger for 5$ on offer up.. had to pick it up. Messed up part about it, the night before I spent 30 on a new charger.
I've bought some micro usb to usb C adaptors so I can still utilise all my old cables. I don't always need to dash charge.
I saw the video on how fast it charged with the dash car charger where it was pitted up against the S8 with both running Google Maps. OP5 went from 2% to 43% in 30 min and S8 went from 2% to 12%in the same time. When I saw that I changed my from an extra brick to the car charger (which came with a cable of it's own). This way in the car for 20-30 min will be fine when I'm out and about. If I'm not going to be with my car I'll just grab the brick.
With that said, I'm getting like up to 9.5 hours on a charge (averaging 8.5 hours SOT) so once its charged, is there really a need most days to worry about charging it mid day?

Says who?
You can recharge the OP5 using any 5V charger. The limitation is that it will take longer to recharge the battery. But that shouldn't be an issue if you recharge overnight.
Also because the battery lasts so long on a charge you don't need to do a full recharge in order to get a day's worth of charge. Indeed slower recharging and less than full recharging should also help to extend the useful life of the battery.
So for all of these reasons I intend to use only the single Dash charger that came with my OP5 plus all the other "regular" chargers I've accumulated over the years. I've already bought USB and microUSB to USB-C adapters to use with my charger collection.
P.S. The OP5 indicates what type of charger it detects:
5V 0.5A as found on PC USB ports shows "Charging slowly."
5V 1.8A as found on a typical smartphone charger shows, "Charging."
Dash charger shows, "Dash Charging."
I've bought 4 dash chargers. 1 at my desk in my house, 1 at my bed, 1 in my office at my work and one in my travel bag. An there is also always a fully charged 10.000mah powerbank in there... I did the same with my handicapped Galaxy S6 haha. But Now I figure out my OnePlus 5 goes on and on and on... without breaking a sweat hahahaha.
I've got 3 of them... One at home, one at work, one in my bag.
Stupid question, cuz I haven't tried yet and I'm wondering... if you can use the charger to charge other devices? I know, it won't charge them faster or blah blah but do you think I can use it to charge my MP3 player or some other phone? Or is it purely proprietary and has something more than the other chargers?
Unfortunately the QC 2.0 and 3.0 blocks I have, like 11 of them are super slow, as noted previously. I only have the one that came with the phone for my house and I got a car charger discounted with the phone. I might end up getting a third for work, not sure. Is there ANY knockoff 3rd party charger than can charge similar to dash charge?
I have one dash charger, the one that came with the phone. I have a bunch of non-dash charger/cable because the previous phone supported QC 3.0. I know this phone does not support QC, but it charges up the phone pretty quick. Not as quick as the dash but quick enough for me. Unless if you are on the phone every minute like playing games or watching a movie, you should be able to get a full day's worth on a single charge.
I have one dash charger which came with phone plus car dash charger. If you are not in hurry and charging it overnight why would it matter dash or regular charger to use?
Phone has so good battery life you don't need to put extra chargers anywhere you go...
But it's personal decision.
PS: usually, if you are charging lipo battery slowly, it goes easy on it and may prolong life of the battery.
As far as dash chargers, I only have the one that came with the phone, which I barely use. I mostly charge my phone directly from a usb C port on my computer when I'm working from home. At night I use an iOrange-E cable that I connect directly to my usb-A/usb-C wall outlet to top it off and unplug it right before going to sleep. Since I'm not a heavy user, a single charge pretty much does it for me and I haven't had the need to use Dash charging to top off my phone.
I don't understand having a bunch of these chargers. Unless you work or live tin can, you should not struggle to get a days worth of battery.
The only extra charger someone should need would be the car. Plug your dash charger in your living room / den, plug a standard usb c charger in your bedroom, and a dash charger in your car.
I can't imagine this setup not working for 90% or more of users.
It's weird, I have 3, I keep one in my laptop bag, I have the dash car charger, and another wall plug I keep in my room. I have maybe used the one I keep in my laptop bag twice. I mostly use the one in my car at the start or end of the day as I commute about 45 minutes to work everyday. Battery on this phone has been better than my oneplus 3 by a noticeable margin.
I only have one dash charger. Just a regular USB-C for typical charging - why would you need it for overnight charges?
The dash charger definitely came in handy today though, since I visited a theme park all day (but came prepared of course).
Battery on this phone has been great. I also went to a water park yesterday, phone was on 15% when I got home.. plugged it in to the dash charger and 40 min later I was in the 90s. Don't know what they did for it to charge that fast, but I'm one happy OP customer.
