e-COMPASS - Streak 5 General

Before my streak went back and whilst i am waiting for another one could someone tell me where the E-COMPASS is i spent half an hour looking round the device and could not find it

There isnt one on the device, download a compass app. Just search the market for compass.

Yep that makes sense. just wondering tho when you go to the settings then to programs list there is a e-compass in there i am new to the android so why is that in there but no app to be found.sorry for my ignorance Just trying to get up to speed with android

Thats probably the service and driver. The app list is a bit dumb by default, it shows EVERYTHING installed, you have to filter for downloaded apps.

It's a free version. The actual name is "Advanced Task Manager Lite" so do a search on "Advanced".
I did do a search and can't find it. Anyone else managed to find it under Rogers in Canada?
I can easy find it. I use it every day, but i find it a bit strange that you cant close apps in any other way! And alot of programs doesnt have a "Quit/Exit" function.
Does anyone have any explanation to why its not possible to close programs without download extra programs?
you know,
I think i heard Something about when you leave the app , it does actually sort of close.
It saves the state you left it in (freezes) and unfreezes when you enter it again. So really the App is not running or using any comsumption at all until you are in the app.

This is true.
It is because android is awesome at app management. There is no real need for closing apps. It leaves apps kinda open (saves their state in ram) but not running. That`s why most apps open so fast. And even though more ram is "in use" it doesn`t cost you battery life.
Thanks for confirming ,
What a fantatic way , The OS is fantastic and I can guarantee that Android has alot of potential and Can only get better and come up with more technological breaking idea's!!

Oh i didnt know that!! Sounds really fantastic. I have to get used to a whole new way of thinking then, i think im too used to windows
Anyway. I love Android more and more. But i was shocked when i found out that you cant send or receive files via bluetooth. I hope this is their number 1. priority in the next released. I mean, comon .. phones have been able to do this for 10 years now!

i did not find it either. i m using rogers too
but you can download Close Everything at Market for free.
i think those apps are similar. the only difference is you have to close EVERYTHING instead of choosing an app to end it.
anyway, the system is not getting slower even i open lots apps.
maybe, the "freeze" thing is true
yesterday I had my phone fully charged before i got to sleep, in the morning 8 hours later the battery was almost empty. GPS and WIFI was disabeld, so I think all the programs in the "background" ( a lot ) killed the battery.
Or what do you think killed the batt?

if you disable background data usage in data sync that will save batt life and lower data usage too.
do not know if that helps at all

alarms still work (tested just now)
i do not know how that app works ~oops~
maybe it does not work at all hahaha
not all programs stop running. some are designed to run in the background
the only real way to check what is running is to use a task manager
I paid $0.99 for advanced task manager. Its a good, but basic app. And hardly breaks the bank at that price!
The other issue I get is "go slows" sometimes on the phone. It doesn't seem to crash, just response times go into the seconds. I switch off and on to soft reset and its fine.

Why should I disable data usage? If i have an app that use data, then I only need to close the app. Please correct me if I´m wrong.

Google Maps 4 Anyone?

Has anyone installed Google Maps 4 on their HD2? Observations?

Well timed, just updated half an hour ago
Much the same really. Just seems to add Buzz and move a couple of options around. Nothing special
Street view is now much better, it finally allows you to pan up/down as well as left/right.

This feature was already present in google maps 3.3.1.
P.s.: buzz seems interesting.
Actually I could not find anything new
You access streetview by holding anywhere .. box with address will popup .. you click that .. and then you can select streetview from details about the place.

Buzz is new, other than that I think it's the same old (unless the Wikipedia layer is also new - haven't noticed it before anyhow).
It'll be very interesting to see what Google's plans are for Buzz in the future. It's a rather cool app/idea as is.
Hmm.. The GPS accuracy seems to have improved..
Also when you tap on a particular point on a map.. it loads info about that place in a pop up..

Buzz .. I see .. well .. we'll see
hmm
I dont understand, how do u activate the street view function?
Tap and hold a point on the map and a balloon will pop-up with options. It may take a second or two to appear but a link to Streetview will appear in that list IF streetview is available in the area that you are looking at.
I haven't noticed anything new (other than Buzz) but the pinch-to-zoom feature still lacks accuracy. The point on the map I'm looking at (for instance, my location) always moves off to the top-right as I zoom in or out.
Since the zoom is not fluent, I see no point in pinch-zooming. Buttons works just as well.
Actually starting with this version I'm seeing the app use the integrated compass to indicate heading.
I tried installing that special GPS driver to get the compass to work in GMaps a few days ago and couldnt get it working so uninstalled it... but this version of GMaps just did it on its own!

You don't have whole Buzz .. only map related Buzz. You can turn it on in Layers. New icon will appear to add new map-Buzz. Generally you mark some point on the map, you add comment to it, and then all your followers can see that point too, if they add Buzz layer.

No. I wish google made new version using 3D acceleration, for both smooth zooming and streetview (or even navigation as it is on Android). I hope such version is in progress. On the other hand, calling this version new major makes me think that they don't take WM platform much seriously.

I tried all of them I could find, and Quickmark seems to recognize the bar code much, much faster than anything else out there. Even at weird angles, poor lighting, etc. With other apps I had to screw around and get it lined up JUST right -- some of them only occasionally, others all the time. But Quickmark grabs the code even if it's out of focus and I'm still moving the phone around trying to find the thing...
This, by the way, is how QR-code scanning is supposed to work. The specification has all those alignment marks for a reason. The cheap-o Japanese cell phones that recognize QR can pick out the code quickly and easily, and this is the first smart phone app I've seen which performs equally well.
strange never had a problem with FC on shop savvy.

Alex here from ShopSavvy. Strange that barcode scanner would be faster than ShopSavvy. The current build of both uses the same library for scanning. They should scan at exactly the same speed. We have a new library that is faster than the Zxing library, but we haven't implemented in ShopSavvy yet (developers can get it for free from freebarcodescanner.com). It will be in our next update. Anyway, if you are getting a force close issue all you need to do is uninstall and reinstall. The most common ShopSavvy issue on Android, is the 'force close' issue. We believe it to be an issue with the operating system. The best way to fix it is to uninstall ShopSavvy, reinstall ShopSavvy and then reboot. This seems to get rid of the 'force close' issue. For all other issues check out our FAQ or Support site.
Our FAQ is located at biggu.com/faq
Our support site is located at getsatisfaction.com/biginjapaninc
We are constantly releasing updates (bug fixes and new features) on Android and iPhone. Make sure you are using the most up-to-date version of ShopSavvy.

The FC issue happens to about 1-2% of users after they update the app. Very annoying. Something about the state of the phone at the time of the update. Google has tried to help us figure out how to resolve it, but after two years we don't have a fix. Lots of other apps have the same issue. When get several million users 1-2% turns into a big number - 60,000+ users for each update.
I prefer quickmark
Bunch of choices, but Barcode Scanner seems to be the default. I think one of the team members works at Google.

so much for hoping the Fascinate would ship with froyo but now i have to wait for this fix? how is it possible that the samsung epic had a fix?
Verizon better not be disabling gps in order for the to sell their agps VZ navigator crap
So it works as long as you reboot the phone from time to time?
Has anyone tried running the fascinate gps with VZ NAvigator?
So can u download google maps and use that? That may or may not be the dealbreaker for me, someone who knows please answer this question for me as i was planning on being the first one in the store on thursday and they are already holding one for me

It comes with Google maps. Yes GPS doesn't work the best, but its good enough for me. Never not found me and directs me where to go. Yes could be better but its not useless. I use mine daily.
I've read the GPS problem is software based, something the way its calculating something is wrong, idk.. Samsung is saying they are going to fix it through a software patch, if that's the case, wouldn't rooting and installing stock Froyo or another ROM fix this issue?
iv been using the fascinate for a week now and yes the bing being the main search engine is annoying. and the bing maps does find me it usually takes 60sec or less. bt it does not give voice guided directions. i did install google maps and you can search fine and it finds you right away bt when you go to navigate option it will search and never come up just gives you the route turn list no voice guidance. bt playing with the phone if you go into the navigation app that installs with google maps and do your search in that and do the navigate it will do voice turn by turn. im pretty happy this is working. it still annoys me that bing is on the phone in the first place it belongs in the garbage.
I can wait for the GPS fix. Everything else about this phone is so amazing. Especially that GPU.

Based on my examination of the system dump, your SUPL settings are still defaulted www.spirent-lcs.com. Change those to supl.google.com, port 7276, secure sockets off, turn AGPS on by changing mode to MS Based, and see how it works. There are further driver level improvements coming. On my Captivate, there is a significant increase in speed of locking and accuracy when going from JF6 to JH2, and that's not the final fix yet.

4 - Under "SUPL/CP Settings" Change the SERVER & PORT to supl.google.com and port 7276 [ Do not use www. in front of supl]
5 - REBOOT
6 - Turn back on the "User Wireless Networks"
i'm not sure if this applies to everyone, but from what i've tested gps works perfectly in google maps. it shows my location to the accuracy of what corner of my work parking lot i'm standing in. however, if i use the test gps app, it shows no signal. very odd.

High fidelity position app

Has anyone noticed better gps accuracy or response times when enabling the sensor aiding, GLONASS, or both in the high fidelity position app?
I have been trying different tests and I am inconclusive.
Since latest update to it I have noticed when it is enabled I keep a tighter accuracy ring longer. Where as before it would lose accuracy faster as I moved. I have been using the Outdoor Navigation app from GPS Tuner with great results for Geocaching.

Separate. Read here:
The app has two settings: "Use Sensor Aiding" where it uses those extra sensors and "GLONASS" or GLObal Navigation Satellite System, developed by the Russians and which you can enable and use at the same time to enhance location availability. (Looks like Sammy is making some new international deals).
In addition:
You have the option to use sensor aiding to help with pedestrian positioning and using GLONASS.
GLONASS is short for Globalnaya navigatsionnaya sputnikovaya sistema or mildly put, Global Navigation Satellite System. As best as I can understand things, GLONASS is a Russian version of the U.S. GPS system. It compliments your Windows Phone GPS to enhance location availability.
