"Tragically flawed" but "the Hero is still the best Android phone yet" so my pre-order still stands
It's making me having second thoughts though. I think I'm going to wait and see. If speed issue isn't there when only a limited number of widgets are used, then I think I'm ok with that.
With a bit of tweaks it will be lightning fast. And who cares of the camera?
Someone in the comments on the article says that a Class 6 micro SD card should speed it up. Guess what I just ordered from Amazon?
The review was pretty much one sided...everything kept coming back to the iphone for some reason
Even after reading through it I decided to go ahead and order my Hero...delivery is on thursday tho...have to wait TWO DAYS lol.
This is interesting from:
http://www.techradar.com/reviews/ph...hero-617981/review?src=rss&attr=all&artc_pg=2
The only problem, and it's a big problem for now, is the whole system does lag quite comprehensively at times. It's at its worst when you take the phone out of the box for the first time, and although it does speed up to an acceptable level on the homescreen, certain aspects (such as updating Twitter or the weather) can cause the whole system to slow down to a complete stop at times.
It's a real shame that this is the case, and could be something to do with the fact there's only a 528MHz processor under the hood, which could be a little underpowered when you're multi-tasking the level offered by the HTC Hero.
However, before you write the phone off, there's more than a ray of hope. The last time we played with the HTC Hero, around a month ago, the problem was there but so much worse. This tells us two things: it's likely it will be fixed by the time the phone is released onto the market (or at least the first firmware update will go a long way to doing so) and HTC have had to rush this to market for some reason (perhaps to stave off the challenge of Samsung's first Android phone, the i7500?).

It probably is due to the fact that these are review handsets or something like that. The Hero rom runs fine on my G1 tbh, it's slow in some places but with a system that has twice the RAM and ROm I would expect that to stop tbh.
Gizmodo reviews you can ignore anyway .
... but still there are quite a few of mixed stories.
Basicly it seems the animation and core Android menu's are smooth and speedy and responsive.
but it seems they put the HTC Widgets on very low priority, as not to slow down the rest of the phone. So the widgets take their time updating their content, which seems more as a connection-speed thing.
I'm sure that if it's not speedy enough from launch, it will come in ROM fixes, either from HTC or from XDA . And if we somehow can get root on the phone, the usual tweaks such as compcache and/or swap will speed it up a bit.
The CPU is fast enough on those MS7xxx based devicse, it's the internal ROM-storage that's kinda slow. The same reason that file-caching tweaks and using SD cards for storage / OS parts work on both the Diamond and the G1 for example.
I'm just gonna form my own opinion on this device when I have it in my hands . But seeing as I'm more than happy with my tweaked Diamond - which is named quite slow in every review out there - I expect good things from the Hero.
Cnet absolutely HATES IT!

Interesting what they comment on the lag other reviews are reporting:
We’ve actually been talking about this in the forums over at AndroidCommunity.com. The reason I didn’t mention lag is because I didn’t really experience any; there’s a slight slow-down in flicking away from a homescreen pane if the widget is updating (such as Peep getting the latest tweets) but it’s incredibly minor (IMO). There was never a lag or delay that I could legitimately say was annoying. The camera, too, seemed faster than some sites are reporting.
The speed you see in the demo videos is basically the speed the Hero ran at all of the time. I’ve talked with HTC about the differing experiences, and they’re just as confused as we are; they say all the review devices (which I’m taking to mean those in the UK and those shipped to the US for reviews there) are running the same production ROM. However there are obviously some differences in performance across the board, not to mention I know a few people have had glitchier devices than others.
In short, this could be a “good” Hero and there could be “bad” ones out there with other reviewers, we just don’t know. Given that Orange UK are apparently beginning sales of the smartphone today, I imagine we’ll soon hear whether those versions live up to expectations or not.

Look at the video "HTC Hero media widget and Flash-capable browser:" in that review.
Now I know what the other reviews are on about. It takes a fraction of a second for it to move between home screens. On default android this was fluid and you saw the "transition" of dragging the screen from one position to another, on the hero it looks more like Homescreen 1, Swipe, 0.2 second wait, Homescreen 2.
Not a problem at all, but most reviewers would criticise for this, especially the ones that always go back and compare to the "all mighty iPhone"
The Hero is far better than the iPhone - me thinks. But I dont want a war about it.
This is just my experience from using apple technology for 20 years

Or the Diamond when it was released or even the TD2... really it's all subjective!!
http://phandroid.com/2009/07/23/htc-hero-review/
I've noticed a couple times scrolling through the forums that an outsider interested in buying the phone might be turned away if they read through here. Of course, odds are they wouldn't come to XDA in the first place, but still the complaints - though in the minority - are most obvious.
Tired of all the hater threads? Love your HD2 as much as I do? Enjoy the looks of envy from 3GS users? This is our thread
Besides, the best unexpected side benefit of the HD2: plentiful opportunities for "that's what she said."
Wow... the counter part entitled "Lets face it: HD2 (and XDA!) is f*in amazing!". Things are getting interesting.
The best thing I love about HD2 is screen, CPU, WiFi router and Remote Desktop Mobile (my personal favourite). Perhaps a couple of other "diamonds sparkling behind the rock". You need to dig to get the diamonds....lol...
I received envy, but not necessarily quite the type I thought...!
I was at the shops waiting for my GF, playing with my HD2. A little boy probably around 10yo was with his mum sitting next to me spotted me playing games.
Boy: "Look there mum!! See!! EVERYONE has an iPhone!!"
Surprisingly, I was actually slightly offended that someone would mistake the HD2 as an Apple product...but he was only a kid so I kept quiet and just continued playing...hehe.
Love it all, screen crisp and clear, fast fast fast processor and navigates really easily and well, surprising ease of use input methods, that fact that while its big it doesnt feel too big when using it as a phone, how clear and loud the speakers are, plays movies really well and so much better than I expected, really easy to use and individualise... so much more that I'm afraid if I keep typing it will look like I am gushing...
I sold My iPhone 3gs to buy this.................. best thing I have done

oh boy... there we go again...
... I'll just add, that I can play street fighter alpha 3 full speed with sound while sitting on the damn toilet. at the moment there's nothing better than hd2 to run playstation emulator.
oh yeah... it's a decent phone too...
im lovin my hd2 tbh. my last phone was an omnia and over at modaco there is a great rom scene, i havent even tried a custom rom on the hd2 yet, so i havent scratched the surface on what this amazin piece of kit can offer! the best thing about wm is defo the customization.
the screen on this device is something else, web browsing is amazing (im writin this on hd2 now).
xda is brilliant, this forum is so active, lots going on!!

normally i`m not responding in threads starting HD2 is bleh bleh, but now +1, loving it...
Finally a thread that makes sense
I love the screen, the wifi speed, the speed in the menus, the video playback (streaming with coreplayer of course), the pinch to zoom, the hardware, sense 2.5, the screen resolution and again that screen... so beautiful
moved from xperia x1, the processor is twice fast and so the screen!
still at stock Rom until my spare battery arrive best phone in winmo era!
buy another iptouch if you want to play fancy game, affordable compared to awesome HD2
At work yesterday I showed a mate who has an iPhone, side by side the HD2 just looks SOOOO much nicer
Htc hd2 ftw
I hope i'll be able to write a line or two in this thread next week
I love the HD2, the wonderful screen estate, the speed and all the wonderful mods. XDA-developers is the one reason I stayed with HTC phones and not gone for others. All the help and wonderful tweaks and modifications just make the phone unique to us and we feel so free to do as we like without being restricted.
Best time was when a iPhone 3gs owner got envious of my HD2 XD
And as many o got offended when some ppl have misstaken it for a iPhone >.<
HD2 looks way better than a iPhone, faster too ^^.
Just a quick one from a very loyal windows phone user who went to iPhone 3GS and then played with a HD2...
There are MANY reasons to go back to windows/HTC and given that I have been using the 3GS for around 6 months now, it's quite a big thing to say.
There are also many reasons to stay with the iPhone.
To be honest, the functionality and hardware...the HD2 wins hands down and not a single person can say otherwise.
Software-wise - I have to admit, the same BUT, when I went back to the iPhone, I couldnt help noticing the simplicity of it all which sometimes made it a bit better to use.
There were also a few niggles that the iPhone seemed to not have
Other: The appstore.
This is where the iPhone won over the market place.
The apps are cheap, there are plenty of them around and some of the very few games that I always have to have on a phone (need for speed/asphalt) were a lot better on the iPhone.
Why am I going back to the iPhone?
Only one reason after all that testing... logmein!
I heavily use logmein for home/work and this is something that is too flakey on the HD2.
iPhone has an app, its all done via the app. Related to this, the web side of things work very well on the iphone where zooming in still fits the page to the screen.
Niggles:
Main one is that the Audi and the HD2 don't like each other in that the contacts are only syncing up to the letter N
Second was emails i found easier on the iphone (don't shout!)
I love the idea of how it displays on the HD2 but hate the idea that to delete, I have to go into another screen or whatever. This is going back to Simplicity that you have 4 icons, one to reply, one to delete, and whatever the others do ON the email in question. Same goes for multiselect...going to a menu, select, select several is 3 screens to many and the iPhone slide>delete individually is still "simpler"
having said all of this, if I had never touched the iPhone, I would not have realised any of the above and gone for the HD2
But the way I work is to take the HD2, not use the 3GS, and see if I need to use the 3GS for anything...if not, the HD2 is a winner.
And in this case, it did win had it not been for the bluetooth and logmein.
End of the day, it's all personal preference and I know for a fact I'll go back to HTC/WinMo once I get what I want on it
Right now, I just dont know what to do and still have both devices in my pocket
A friend of mine brought his HD2 to work today. And I liked how the screen looks on this phone. The size difference is very significant. And browser speed was better than the nexus! Made me a bit upset. The windows based operating system never interest me, but it looked great on the HD2, I just didn't like the pic quality it takes, the lack of pinch and zoom and the limited apps windows have to offer. But it certainly is a worthy competition to our beloved nexus one.

Im not sure what browser he was using but my stock android browser is much faster than opera 10 mobile :\ If he was using opera mini/ skyfire its kind of an unfair test since they use server side rendering.
I had the hd2 and there's no way the browser on the hd2 is better than the one on the nexus.
my friend has an HD2 and yes, its friggin huge compared to our n1's!. texting on it felt horrible and I noticed similar problem with the nexus texting issue how the keypresses would jump all over the place. also the UI looks lovely but kind of confusing
I compared the hd2 and my nexus the day hd2 arrived, no way other. than screen is that thing better. Windows 6. 5 felt so old, and the browser was not faster I tested it, 9.7 vs my stock, needless to say I walked out proud I have a n1, even the store reps agreed I made the right choice.... hardware its nice but that's it.
I too tested the HD2 at a T-Mobile store the day it came out in the states.
I kept trying to swipe to different home screens and then realized I couldn't; only that small film strip at the bottom. I just thought "oh, is that it?"
After seeing all the problems my mom has with that thing, I will never buy any Windows Mobile device. Not worth freezes, black screens, horrible lag, hard typing, it just overall doesn't feel like something I could use everyday..
Got mine today from 3 (UK) and have to say, thus far, best Android phone ever........
Simple stuff, it's set up with M$ exchange and tasks (a must for me) and the seamless integration with Google+,Facebook and Twitter is brilliant (missed this with every other Android phone).....
Loving the Blink feed.....
Haven't used the camera much yet, however the TV Remote app (Watch) or whatever its called.....easy set up on both TV and SKY and it's a genuine brilliant feature.
So far, well happy and nothing Sammy can throw at their (SG3s)comes close to this....

Very nice. Good hearing positive things about blinkfeed. Let us know any other interesting things you find out about.
coming from the og one x
Silver or Black?
I got my silvet one on 3 today. To start with it's the best android smartphone I ever used. Design is awasome and the phone sits very pleasant in my hand. Damn it HTC worked very well on aesthetic of UI.it's so refined detail driven and tuned I am having good times just staring at it.I am detail driven person thats part of my work and I have appreciation and eye for things like this. Battery was around 80% when I got phone it lastet around 9hours on 50% brightness 3g and WiFi combined.Email YouTube browsing music listening an so on. I believe camera softaware could be tweakened more... sometimes highlight details gets overexposed and wide angle lens tends to distort image on the sides the latter I am not sure if possible to correct on the phone but the editing program. Having said that low light shoots are my favourite. Camera does really good job and keeps colour very close to natural. Another good thing is your photos are only a little over 1MB .what a compact size. Dual Speakers are in they own league it sounds stereo and is clrar. Phone is smooth and fast. I like blinkfeed and I think it does a job for me.At the moment I have my FB telling me all new stories. Screen is crisp and clear with natural colour and good viewing angles. Coming from sgs2 I didn't have a problem to navigate through the phone I think it's quiet intuitive. So far so good. I don't regret for a single second I got this phone. If I had a second chance to choose the phone without a doubt I would pick The One.....Enjoy your new phone HTC fellows!

Not only would it melt, it would melt in an unusable gooey blob and look like **** + the fumes would mess up your brain (maybe thats why samsung users like their devices ..)
The One however will be a nice piece of aluminum, that can be remelted and recycled and reborn as a new one

I lol'd, you may have a point, how hot do thsoe phones get? slow burn so you dont realize it? causing brain damage, is the only way someone would want to buy those phones again..
Seeing as I did play with the phone in shops many times, nothing about the experience of this phone comes as a surprise. Its fast, smooth (no lag what so ever), UI is fantastic infact just simply the best, camera is fantastic have only taking one pic, but i took many when I used it in shops, same as video, dual speakers and in headset audio second to none!!! i dont even care about the features of the s3s which is a very good phone btw but certainly not on the Ones level!!! this is just the best phone ever made!!!! forget good job HTC, excellent job HTC, next year just add a memory card slot and much bigger battery to please all those who complain about battery and memory. I was confused as to why they called it the one and orginally thought M7 was better but now having it as my own phone rather than a shop model - it deserves the name ONE!!! coz its number ONE!!
Got my HTC One yesterday and wow i thought this is one good looking phone, fired up quadrant and saw the score rocket up to 12500 whilst my s3 was just finishing the test with a score of 6300, all is well, camera is great, UI is a little bland rows and columns are a bit too big for my liking but i thought i'd hang in there, then the back button breaks, literally would take no input at all (this is on a phone about half an hour old) so swapped it for another brand new one and the back button is working again.
Next day (today) i installed real racing 3 and six axis app (after rooting of course) and went to set up the pad for a game, HTC has messed up with the bluetooth drivers again, no six axis.
Real racing 3 runs on very high settings perfectly, however there is one problem, the phone gets so hot i actually felt uncomfortable holding it, it was so hot i couldn't continue playing any more. I had noticed that it was a little hot when simply browsing but gaming just sent it into boil mode.
On a contract for £46 a month and for two years, these issues will make me hate this phone, so tomorrow morning i will be getting this cancelled and never going back to HTC again, unless they sort these issues in the future (something i highly doubt)
I'd missed HTC after being with Sammy for the last year but i'd forgotten about the silly things that HTC does like the bluetooth drivers and how could i forget them removing the code for the CRT effect?
Won't be getting the S4 either as it's probably only going to be the quad with the adreno gpu, which is why i went for the HTC in the first place.
Sad times.
Think i'll be giving my S3 another whirl and sticking with it until something actually groundbreaking surfaces.
I know to some that these issues might not be that bad but for me it's too much of a pain to live with.
first : do you have scientific proof that the six axis is not working, or the app is not optimized to work with the six axis?
second : real racing is a high demand game, it's only natural for the phone to heat up. try playing on the nexus 10, u have a chest warmer for winter
third : so crt effect is a deal breaker for you? then it's your problem. go back to samsung, dont buy htc. end of story
keywords : VERY HIGH SETTINGS.
and your skin is probably baby skin, browsing is WARM, not HOT. there's a difference between WARM and HOT. and u mentioned hot to the point u cant hold it anymore? samsung fanboy exaggeration
good thing the most intensive games i play are GBA emulators and Candy Crush Saga, I'll love this phone.
Hmmm..
The overheating issue is good to know about. That has to be my pet peeve with any handheld device. Either way, I never judge a phone by it's stock firmware. I would flash a nightly build and see how the phone handles it, overall I think we can all agree that the hardware is fantastic. HTC's software isn't mandatory.

exactly, nobody, else 15% of the community plays super high demand games on their phones. phones are just for everyday convenience ; browsing, small time entertainment, calls, sms, etc. those high end games are designed for tablets.

Wow u are an arse aren't you!
First of all, i don't need scientific proof that the six axis app doesn't work, it is to do with the bluetooth HID protocol that HTC favours, it has always been this way with phones with HTC sense, probably always will.
Secondly, I am fully aware that Real racing 3 is a high demand game, partly the reason me playing it on a high performance device, the phone should not get that hot, i have an s3 which runs the game just as well, even the One X runs it well without getting as hot as this one did, i know whats acceptable and whats not.
And lastly, i didn't say that not having CRT is a deal breaker alone, i said that it's one of the many things that HTC has done that has caused me to send this lump of crap back to the shop and get my contract cancelled.
I didn't come on here to argue with anyone, i don't even know you and your comment is just rude, don't blindly defend the HTC one you probably bought because you're attempting to justify the price you paid for it, it's making you looks like a ****.
For me these are issues i can't be dealing with and i put this up here so that anyone thinking of getting this phone is aware of the problems that i had and can take them into consideration.
Plus i'm not a fan boy either, check my history and you'll see that i've been with HTC since the beginning of their android reign, and i don't have baby soft hands either lol, what are you on? I've been a roofer before and worked in construction for a long time, tell me anyone who's hands are baby soft when they've been lumping slates up onto a roof for a few years.
I've paid for high end games because i wanted to, i bought the phone because it's capable of running any of them. My choice, not my fault the phone can't chill out.

you seem so sure, can you actually provide proof? if you can, then everyone will be notified of the issue instead of "it's just you" issue

like you said, you love to root and flash roms and kernels. custom kernels are leagues ahead of stock kernels. tried running RR3 with stock kernel on the s3 and one x? you phone will melt. dont ask me why, because i own a one x and im using it now, playing candy crush saga melts the phone.
And lastly, i didn't say that not having CRT is a deal breaker alone, i said that it's one of the many things that HTC has done that has caused me to send this lump of crap back to the shop and get my contract cancelled.
one of the many things? then i stand up to my point. just go back to samsung. we dont need people like you to demotivate potential buyers

i've mentioned this on another thread. what i say is merely based according to what people REALLY uses in a smartphone. not in the minority who plays crysis 3 (exaggeration) on their phone and uses their phone as a server and etc.

based on my observation, you are the only one who complains the phone gets too hot to hold, others are saying slightly warm. to strengthen your point, care to post some battery temperatures so that we may deem whether it is too hot or normal? not that it's a burden since you are rooted
Mod u can close this thread if you like, apparently my opinion which is based upon one days usage isn't something that people want to hear? Perhaps a few days with the phone themselves will open their shut eyes.
I never wanted to cause a flame war here, just wanted to help someone dodge a bullet that i took previously.
