Good News for people in the USA.... - HD2 General

I just wanted to let everyone know in the USA that Sprint is releasing the new HTC Evo which is basically an HTC HD2 with a few upgrades and runs Android instead of Windows Mobile. I personally have the Telstra HD2 running on AT&T and love it and I would have got the T-Mobile version except that the T-Mobile coverage is horrible where I live and in many other parts of the country it is extremely poor as well. The Telstra HD2 also doesnt support some 3G bands that AT&T uses, I was lucky enough to live in an area which it does.
I am only mentioning this because its another option for people here in the USA to get a device like the HD2 with a few upgrades and running Android if thats something you want. I am thinking about switching because I am a tech Junky. I swear I am never satisfied!!!

I think everyone is aware of this

I doubt everyone because I just found out a few days ago and I tend to keep myself fairly up to date on stuff like this.

Maybe you need better sources that don't display 2-3months old news. BTW, there's a big thread on the EVO 4G a couple pages back

Lol, I just came to this topic just to see if anyone would slam you, I was right.
It happens though it is reasonable enough to note that you are probably right, there are people that would still not know about it. Thank you for notifying us!

The second poster is right.
Everyone knows.

You lucky bastards.. i live in europe.. and we will never get the EVO4

I just love the fact that people come in here just to bash me... I expected people to bash me but its not like I care; I personally have better things to do than lurk around looking for people to pick on for no reason. I just wanted to point it out for anyone that didn't already know. I am sure there will be a few people who were happy to be informed about it.

Don't bother, EVO4 has nothing much in general than HD2 ! Even Sprint doesn't have that 4G network yet

maybe work will start on porting winmo to evo

Pretty much this. I have a sprint overdrive (3g/4g) from work and use it when im going off-site and being that I'm in SoCal (pretty big market), I'll be lucky if it even locks on to 4G. It's a good marketing tool, but to ask people to pay an extra $10/mo for 4G when the coverage is minuscule at best..is a bit outlandish. But hey, in a year or so, 4G has to compete with HSPA+ and LTE, so don't lose sleep over data speed if you're one of those people.

Yeah, I'm sure most people on this forum are well aware of the EVO. Most people on xda keep pretty up to date. I don't know how the OP just found out... even my brother, who has no real interest in phones or gadgets, knows about it. Plus this is the HD2 section... there's no reason to post about this in the HD2 section. There is already an EVO section on xda, I believe.

people.. tone down.. keep it clean and friendly.. the man was sharing some info.. let it be.. no harm no foul..

EVO has been found to eat battery faster than HD2 due to 4G high-speed... Do not buy it...

I think Sprint is doing so bad financially that they will probably release this phone to attract new customers or lock the ones that are already with them. It won't surprise me if they try to make people getting this phone to get on the "Simply Everything Plan" for $99.00 like they did with the instinct.
ya right, i wish.....
im staying out of contract with 2 lines so that i can bargain with them when the touch pro comes out
Raphael was supposed to come to Sprint before the Diamond. It may be that the Diamond is coming to AT&T I suppose, but it seems doubtful to be coming to Sprint so soon.

not entirely true, since the CDMA Diamond and CDMA Raphael has already gone through FCC. Its up to Sprint now, who probably wont be making any fast decisions just yet, as there still dealing with a lot of **** lately. As a sprint customer I'm starting to feel worried about there future. >_> i just hope that the Korean merger well be a success. And not some cooperate flip-flop.
P.S- i could careless about the Diamond, i want that Raphael phone now!

Amen!!! I'm waiting for the touch pro myself.. I don't care too much for a phone without the keyboard, and about the internal 4gb I can care less too. I'll buy a bigger sd card if I have too and move my contents around. But we need that phone.. my mogul is good but a touch pro would be better.
I love these threads
Less doubt
Well I guess there is less doubt that it will happen!!! Check this report on Engadget!!

What do you mean "not entirely true"? It is completely true: Raphael was supposed to come to Sprint before the Diamond. You're right, it is up to Sprint; but that has nothing to do with my post. Clearing the FCC doesn't mean the devices are both already ready for launch.

Reports I've seen show that Sprint's version isn't going to have a microSD slot.
Yes, now it does seem they've changed their original release order. The specs are fantastic on the Sprint models; I can't wait for these.
But "Herman", Sprint? HERMAN? Really?

Probably. But the version that passed the FCC has no US 3G (AT&T or T-Mo) so odds are it will be European, though I don't know why it'd go thru the FCC if it's European. We all know Moto isn't stupid enough to release a version here without 3G
It has to pass through FCC so that it can operate in the US, for people traveling abroad and such, thus making it a "world phone".
I frankly like the way they're going with the commercial..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPYM-XTqcec
It was pretty head on advertising. Now the 'droid name is out there and more people will be asking about it. Should have been the direction T-Mo should have taken in advertising for the G1. I don't anyone is running out trying to get that new phone Whoopi Goldberg has.
I like the phone in theory... but since it's not an HTC, I don't think I could let myself get it. Is there a Motorola version of XDA?
here it is, perfect design and with keybaord

Funny... the only reason I ever considered HTC was that it shipped with 'droid.

Found this on Craigslist USA, Can anyone confirm?

I just picked up my HD2 I was searching through Craigslist, I found someone who is claiming to have an HD2 that dual boots WinMo and Android. I was under the impression this was not possible yet?? I wouldn't pay that much for a HD2 but It would be nice to have Android.
http://tampa.craigslist.org/pnl/mob/1661032289.html
some people are claiming that they have seen hd2 dual booting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6025146&postcount=32
but until now xda devs were not able to get the kernel running yet.

People BS a lot of Craigslist.
Worse yet, most people don't know any better and would fall for it.
I saw a lot of people putting EURO HD2's up on craigslist, claiming that they are 3G capable in the US, and selling them for $400 or more a few weeks before the US launch...and they were obviously selling.
I dont think its true. there has been so much scam around the last time...... when was the day when all wannabe devs started to turn into idiots?
Its BS.
Shame though, booting from droid and winmo would be awesome.

Really? People haven't been able to get Android to run on the HD2? I have had it on my Fuze for a few months now. Almost everything works as well.
I was going to start looking into having it on my new T-mobile HD 2 as well.
Just read how he describes it and you'll know he doesn't know much. Don't waste your time.
Yes, the guy sounds like a 14year old kid who doesn't know how to make a proper sale ad. He has no idea what he's talking about.
He probably installed an Android wallpaper and thinks it makes the phone dualboot into Android.

Does anyone else here feel... empty?

Most of our devs are gone. They've run off to the Evo portal and ebayed their Heroes. In turn, people bought their Heroes on Ebay and we will have a flood of noobs coming. We probably won't have a rom update from a major dev ever again, and... it makes me feel empty inside.
Darch is still here, Regaw is still here. Not sure who else is.
Toast and flipz have said hero dev will continue, just slow. I think jschi didn't jump ship either. And he is a genius

Heh. Look at the bright side: now other people can take over the reigns; and trust me, some people here are more than capable at doing so.
Don't feel empty, but I am a little upset with HTC. They've pretty much made us dependent on the developers here. I would be fine with stock roms, but it's pretty clear that HTC is pretty much done supporting the Hero. 2.1 is it and the update comes with its own issues that weren't in 1.5.
I got an Android phone with the assumption that it would be supported with the latest updates at a faster pace and for much longer than what I'm seeing by HTC. It makes it pointless to ever do another contract if I'm going to be stuck with a phone that won't get regular updates from the manufacturer. I'm not sure if I would get another HTC phone. I hope Sprint gets the Nexus One.

^ this and i am thinking that devs from other areas will step into heros now that they can pick them up much cheaper than before the evo was released. look at some of the older phones, they are still going strong in the dev department.
i am not worried even if i end up with 'just' darchdriod as my daily rom for the rest of my contract (another 6 months or so).

The Hero is sort of the unwanted stepchild of XDA now. But, all the first-time Ebay adopters are coming to our "rescue".
I cant do what flipz, damage and darch do. Just naming top 3 roms.
But i can put things together and fix broken things. Ill be stuck with my hero for quite some time. So im always willing to collaborate with others to get something working.
Also im sure we could ask a few questions here and there to the main devs for advice and help. No matter what phone they currently use.
I think we have almost everything we can think of, OC, roms, JIT, themes etc.. I think that covers all the big breakthroughs for are hardware restricted phones. But we can always improve on them, many here are capable. So yeah it sucks these big names left but im honestly not worried about the future of the CDMA hero.
Save up and buy an evo.
This is just how the phone loop rolls, once theres something better , you don't go back.
I will be keeping my hero, but yeah look at it this way , XDA devs are not the only ones dumping the phone , so is sprint.

It does have "full root" but the storage has nand locked/protected. It's like that little switch on and SD card or floppy to protect it only its software not hardware theyll break it in a week or two. You can pull apks in recovery... and WiFi tether needs a netfilter kernel so give em a week and it will work.

Well Regaw should be back at it soon and with you here it should all be ok anyways.

Tmobile G2 is done but lets keep this going!

Honestly guys. Lets keep this support going regardless! Too many awesome developers giving us great things. donate. do anything possible for them. It's sad that T-Mobile decided after 7 months.. to just end a device that actually was a GREAT device. And honestly should be kept around for longer than that. (I'm sure a lot of us paid 250.00 for it with 2 year contract) I hope as a loving XDA Developer member and many others we can keep this going. I'm rather concerned what will happen in the future with this device on the development side of things. It's a good device and I know in the world of technology things to age very very fast. but maybe we can keep this around for longer than t mobile wants..
Much respect.. XDA guy dude of sorts.
This belongs in general.
Yes it does. But why not let the developers see this? I'd like to hear most of the developers opinions..
Because this is not what the developer forum is for and I really doubt devs are going to pack up and ship out because T-Mo isn't retailing the phone anymore.

I agree and hope this is the case. There are already a ton of us with the G2/DZ and it isn't a big deal if they take it off the shelves. All of you who have it now can just keep it going. I realize the concern with warranty replacement and such, but other than that I see no reason why this is such a big deal. We all know it's a fantastic device, who cares if T-mo doesn't realize that and discontinues it. Our DZ's still will most likely get the software updates you G2 owners won't get, and the DZ version can just be rooted and put on your G2's. There's no reason to freak out and buy a new phone if you have the G2.
