Froyo Android 2.2 OTA updates begin rolling out - Nexus One General

According to TechCrunch. But I can't post links on XDA apparently, so you will have to go to techcrunch DOT com/2010/05/22/android-froyo-nexus-one/
Sorry

there is a link posted in general section

u from the us?

To be or not to be?
hmmm funny how all the links are to ONE guy... would be lovely if it was the case but the odds of ONLY one set of images and ONE guy having the OTA is slightly concerning.
If he did... "go get a lottery ticket"
If he did not then i'll sit back and refresh for 3 weeks
*#*#checkin#*#*
come on Froyo it's 27 degrees celcius in the UK a great time to drop by and chill us all out!

please can anyone confirmed it

U where you from then? Please tell us if there's any update

In fact reading into it more...
A reporter for TechCrunch website states he has had the OTA?
I'l put 2 and 2 together here and i know this smells very odd now indeed. Do not get your hopes up, and really do smell a clever ploy to attract some users.
Who says it was OTA anyway? surely guys like TechCrunch would be given a sniff anyway weeks ago?
Just my 2 cents.

When running for example Cyanogen, I have two questions someone perhapse can answer:
1) Where do I find the option to check for an OTA-update, cant find it in About in Settings?
2) Will I haveto install a stock rom to be able to do the OTA?
Tnx,

Also from Israel (with CM5.0.6) but still no update I won't install it anyway, waiting for rooted version (so I can flash some Hebrew fonts)

Yes. It's an Update, not a replacement for your custom ROM. The only way you'll even get the option for an OTA update is if you flash your ROM back to stock and wait.
Or, wait for a few more hours for someone to release a rooted ROM, which is assuming the Techcrunch link is for real, which I doubt it is.

Ah that makes more sense, damn typos!

im sure an update.zip will appear within 24 hours of the first hundred confirmed OTA's so don't fret

i bet it´s fake! and techcrunch gets some extra credits for additional clicks...

Questions about Froyo...

So I have rooted my N1 and have cyanogen, when froyo comes out and I decide i want to try it out, do i have to upload the original rom and then upgrade? or what is the best way to do it? so i can go back to cyanogen if i decide i like it better? trying to keep it as simple as possible...Thanks!!!
You don't have to do anything. It will come out as an OTA, Cyanogen will get his hands on it immediately if not a few days before the release and it will be incorporated into his ROM. You will likely have an updated version from him based on Froyo including all his extra goodies before the stock OTA is even 100% rolled out [they usually do it over a couple days].

FroYo will be released in June.
Google I/O is next Wednesday.

2.2 will be leaked next Wednesday.
We will get it.
And laugh at people who haven't rooted.
P.S. Is it just me or does this question come up a lot? And probably will increase over the next few days/weeks...

From Adobe. Check this out:
http://blogs.adobe.com/conversations/2010/04/moving_forward.html
We look forward to delivering Flash Player 10.1 for Android smartphones as a public preview at Google I/O in May, and then a general release in June. From that point on, an ever increasing number and variety of powerful, Flash-enabled devices will be arriving which we hope will provide a great landscape of choice.

Flash requires 2.2, so a "general release" in June would mean that 2.2 would arrive sometime before then or concurrently.
Either way, we (rooters) will get both much, much earlier.
Thanks paul. I hope theres a ton of youtube videos that come from that convention.
I hope froyo has this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ae01yz5z99E
Also if you get bored, watch that video over again with closed captoning, very funny =)
I doubt google is bundling Flash with the AOSP code. That would mean adobe is making flash open source(not happening) or google is locking up android(not happening). With all the talk about decoupling the android OS, the chances of something like a video player being bundled to the main OS update happening are very very very minute.
Flash will be a separate .apk, but the OS will need the frameworks to support it.

It irritates me because he states it as a blatant fact, where it should be said as something less direct. It is a possibility.. but it isn't exactly set in stone to happen - especially with how Google has been so closed about this release.
Froyo being leaked would be a god send, but I won't be holding my breath, simply to be suffocated at the end.
Why do you guys think flash requires 2.2? It comes incorporated into 2.2 but if you have 2.1 you will be able to install the apk and be good. Adobe said flash is coming to android 2.0 and above.

so you have the froyo leak and the flash apk, and you are confirming that flash will not work on 2.1? if this is the case the people in the ppcgeek forum waiting for the evo and the incredible forum are going to be highly upset until their phone is rooted.

its going to suck having to load everything back on to my phone, since this isn't a cyanogen update we will have to wipe everything. then its going to suck when cyanogen comes out with his rom a week or 2 later then we will have to wipe everything again to load cyanogen rom

I credit this to the lack of good stickies in this forum. Ok maybe I should change the word "good" to "useful" stickies. But there really should be a good Q&A sticky to answer everybody's question so that they don't ask it again in a new thread. For example: how many posts have you seen recently that ask "how do I root my phone?".. not many (unless its people panicing because they think they've bricked their phone) and thats because of that sticky at the top. I'm sure Paul will put together a guide (someday) and it will be at the top in no time.
Mod edit: I will pass your suggestion to the responsible forum mods.

Get official JI6 from KIES or online?

So apparently the OTA from T-Mobile is supposed to reach everyone by the end of October. I may get it tomorrow, or I may get it October 31 - I don't know. Frankly, I don't want to wait till the later. Anyone know if its possible to get the official JI6 update from other sources like KIES or online? I realize many people have probably already provided it in the Android Development forum but I am looking for it from an official source, either directly from Samsung or T-Mobile.
Thanks!

Your contradicting yourself, or at least not thinking it through. The OTA *IS* the official distribution method. Samsung KIES is NOT an official distribution method for North American phones. Hate it or like it as you see fit. The only way your going to get it directly is in an unofficial manner, which is the whole reason why JI6 has been made available in the dev forum since it leaked.
Your choices are either wait for the OTA, or flash the JI6 leak that is available.

We can argue semantics all we want. The bottom line is still that I am looking for the update directly from Samsung or T-Mobile ("official" or not); preferably I would like to not have to wait until the OTA hits my phone which could be a while.
For now, your best bet is to install leaked JI6 until someone posts the official JI6 or until someone verifies both builds are same.

That's not going to happen. Either wait for the OTA or like I said, get it in the dev forum. OTA is the only official distribution method you're going to get.
Edit: Actually, you could wait a few weeks, maybe November/December and you might be able to buy a new phone with it.

It's not a semantics argument. The official method is the OTA. There is no other official path.
Now, onto semantics. The leaked JI6 build was gathered unofficially from Samsung's official KIES app. It's been available for about a week. So, it was unofficially obtained from an official source. This is as official as a direct source is going to get.
What you "prefer" isn't really going to alter these truths.

I guess you go to about phone and update firmware and if the firmware is ready it will give it to you?
Personally I am doubting that the rumors of anyone getting the update already are true. I can't imagine that with as many people who are watching and waiting for this that nobody who is on any of these forums has gotten anything yet.
I have been sitting here toggling back and forth between forums thinking just that and then I saw the 9pm time and it all made sense.

Technically even a rooted stock sense phone should receive the update as the updater isn't turned off/removed. At least thats the way the Eris worked. Unless unrevoked somehow turns off the updater when it roots the phone which I'm not aware of.

Alot of the Dinc ROM developers did turn off the updater back when the Froyo OTA was announced due to annoying, constant pop-ups. At least I know that rmk40 did with Virtuous.
This just added over at Android Central:
"Just got word about how the over-the-air rollout's going to take place. The push is scheduled to start Tuesday, Aug. 16, with an initial 10,000 updates. Another 50,000 will get it on Wednesday, and everybody else on Friday."
