Can someone explain the difference between Sprint's ERP, ESRP, and TEP?
I called and asked Sprint, but I think we both got confused. From what I gather:
ERP (Equipment Replacement Program) - $4.00/mnth covers pretty much everything with a 100.00 deductible on smartphones.
ESRP (Equipment Service Replacement Program) - $4.00/mnth covers basically what ERP does?
TEP (Total Equipment Protection) - $7.00/mnth covers ERP and ESRP
What do you recommend? I'm leaning towards ERP (4.00), we currently don't have insurance on our iphones (att doesn't provide it), but would like it. Just don't want to spend 7.00 each line for no good reason.
Also there is Squaretrade for $144.00 for 2 years or $6.00mnth (probably less with coupons).

I pay $7 a month for TEP and I love it, peace of mind, especially with a pricey device like the evo

I finally understand. Thanks, now it's time to decide what level of risk I want to take. ERP has a deductible, and ESRP does not basically. I think since we don't have insurance on our iphones and all has been well for almost 2 years, I think the ERP will be just fine.
They all have deductibles right? I am thinking of the Best Buy plan at 10$ a month since it has hardcore coverage and no deductibles.

If you have sprint's ESRP then no (I think), but if you have ERP then yes, 50-100.00. If you have TEP, then yes if you damaged your phone/lost it... but no if it just stopped working.
Well that's what I think this all means. Sprint really needs to simply its insurance plans. Maybe just offer 1, not 3 plans.
if you bring a phone in and you have TEP or ESRP, and it is not lost or stolen or you ran it over with your car (i.e. normal wear and tear), then you don't pay a deductible. even if you have TEP, the deductible only applies if it falls into the category covered by ERP.
I think that Sprint insurance is b.s ..I have tep pay $7 and just bought my hero on march beatbuy offered the $6 a month if they can't fix it ,they give u a new device.my hero went bad last Wednesday thursday I took it to sprint repair center they couldn't fix it.so I get a refurbished right away when they handed to me I noticed power button don't work,they ordered another refurbished for sat,so another 8 miles of driving to pick it up and its another refurbished that is all scuffed up audio jack is messed up .so if I just bought my hero 2 months ago why did I kept ok getting refurbished devices they said its policy.well after calling like 20 times customer service speaking with reps,managers,supervisors I got a brand new hero, when I could of just bought the best buy insurance..with evo am getting the best buy insurance

Thank you for posting this experience. This is what I hate about the warranty on my Amazon Kindle. I had a Kindle that died in 11th month. They sent me a refurb that looked good, but died in the 100th day . I have another refurb that I hope doesn't die right after the warranty. The worst for Kindle is that the refurbs have 3 month warranties instead of 12 months. I guess I will pay the extra 3$ for the BB insurance then.

yes, once you have insurance on your account, any phone you add to the account then gets covered. even if you bought a use POS phone off ebay and added it to your account, it would be covered. there is a 2wk period after adding a phone where it can't be used.

If you have TEP, you only pay a deductable while filing a claim under the ERP portion. The ESRP portion has no deductable. So basicaly you will pay 50-100.00 if you break you phone, get water damage, lost or it was stolen.(ERP coverage) If it stops working throught no fault of your own, then there is no deductable. (ESRP) Buy both ERP & ESRP = TEP
I know, I know, their insurance options are confusing. If we decide to get the Evo, we will get the ERP insurance for $4.00mnth
So why not just go with ERP and no matter what happens, "I lost my phone"

I agree. But, with ESRP or TEP, you would pay 0 if your phone died from no fault of your own. But if you only had ERP and your phone died because of no fault of your own, you could say lost it, but you'd have to pay 50-100.00 dollars. So like all insurance, it comes down to the amount of risk your willing to assume. For example, I have 500.00 deductables on our cars, but someone else might think 250.00 is better. When I was 20, I had 1000.00 deductables.
If we switch to sprint, we'll get ERP. In the last 3 years with our iPhones, we have never needed insurance. So paying $7.00 dollars a month for TEP seems like too much, ERP for 4.00 is fine. I'm willing to pay 50-100.00 IF I ever need it.
is good if u dont mind going thru the hassle of them not having ur replacement at the repair center,or if u dont mind making a couple of trips if the refurbished phone u get is not a 100% hardware condition,,i made like 4 trips to the repair center and i just bought my hero on march my phone went bad and i got a replacement(refurbished) that power button didnt work and than another one 3 days later that was all scuffed up with paint chipping and 2345 calls mnftcre on 10\12\10 and paying $7 after 4 years .when best buy offered me a $6 equipment protection and if they cant fix it u get a brand new device...so i think is bs.,when i get my evo i will get the bestbuy insurance ...

So tell me, does anyone have insurance on their "rooted" Nexus one? I'm thinking of getting one for mine, but not sure if T-mobile provides it, or is it a good idea to get it from them, if ever. Coz they don't carry the device.

I have insurance on my Non-Rooted Nexus. You can get it from t-mobile. But i dont believe you can have insurance one you root the nexus one. I believe it voids the warranty. I may be wrong. Heres some info:

I have insurance on my ROOTED phone. You can have it. While it is true that rooting voids your warranty this has nothing to do with insurance. So look at it this way. I have a rooted phone and I loose it. I file a claim as loss is covered under the insurance. How on earth are they going to know it was rooted? Make sense.
The other above info is what I was told.
One thing to note. I had insurance on my G1 that was something like $6 / mo when I transfered that to my N1 it went down to the $5 /mo. This is because T-mobile would extend the warranty on the G1 since it was one of their phones. They don't do that on the N1 since it isn't theirs. That is why it is a little cheaper.
As for how it is replaced since T-mobile doesn't have the Nexus. I was told that the insurance company was getting some for replacements. Until then if you had a claim and they didn't have any you would go directly to Google and order a new one. You would be responsible for the full upfront cost of an unsubsidized phone. They then would cut you a check for the phone minus the $130 deductible. Make Sense.
Oh also a point on the 14 days to activate insurance. This is also true however. Lets say you let the 14 days laps. As long as you haven't rooted your phone (that would have voided the warranty) if it is ever replaced by the manufacturer you then have another 14 days to activate the insurance from the point in time you get the replacement. That is how I got insurance on my G1. I forgot to call back in the 14 days and then couldn't get coverage. Then my home button died, T-mobile replaced it under warranty, I then had them activate the insurance. Also if are under insurance and if you have a replacement under warranty I would be sure to call T-mobile. Since that was likely taken care of directly through Google or HTC they may not know. Of course if you had an insurance claim for say water damage that they tried to deny because the SN didn't match what you originally bought you could say "Oh, did I mention that the water damage happened when it fell off the boat in 300' or water?" I must have written that SN down wrong and what you have on record must be right.

that's $2.50 a month folks...
and they don't care if it's rooted, or you used it to hold up your car when you changed your oil.

call whomever you're using, Farmers, whomever, they likely have a similar policy..
T-Mobile is charging a ridiculous premium for that policy

sure, the difference is only $30 a year... over two years an extra $60 on the price of the phone, unless you include the deductible, and it's an extra $190.. 1/3 of the cost of the original phone..
The original poster should call T-mobile again. As I mentioned in my post that the original insurance that I had on my G1 was more expensive. They may have changed it from the insurance that is something like $7/mo to the one that is about $5 ($4.75 or whatever). I got my phone early on so it is possible they are getting better at automating these things. Everyone was still trying to figure out this new Nexus thing when I got my phone.
I have to call my insurance company anyhow so I am going to ask about phone coverage. I have USAA though not State Farm. Even if they don't offer it I wouldn't switch to State Farm. We are saving $1800 a year and have more coverage and a lower deductible on our house compared to State Farm. My parents are now switching over to USAA. He said they will save $900 a year on their 4 cars/truck.

I got talked into the Best Buy Black Tie for 9.99/mo over the 7/mo Assurion. No deductible, protection against everything except for theft and loss, no refurbs...

Use state farm or any insurance company. Pay a few dollars per month with no deductible. I will never use Assurion again. Over the 2 yr contract you pay 7 bucks and $130 Deductible. Thats $300 for there service if you replace your phone during the two years.

I've definitely had some nasty experiences with Assurion... 6 "refurb" Moguls that were all crap, refurb TP's that were crap, refurb TP2s... but I don't know anyone who has had Best Buy's warranty... and I had a really nasty experience with them over a TV a few years back...

It can take up to 2weeks just so you know. Sprint on the other will try to fix it or get-out a replacement phone. If its water damage or damaged beyond repair you can file a insurance claim and the insurance company will over night you a phone. Hope this helps

when i have broken my phones on numerous occasions thru bestbuy i walk in they check and give me a brand new one right away and activate it
Hmmm... Sounds like I should do some more research...
They are both telling the truth. Over the lifecycle of a phone, Bestbuy provides different levels of service. For example, in the early days of the Palm Pre, BB would replace them with in store stock. 6 months in, they began the bullsh*t policy with the mail ins.
They do this with most phones. No way to know if it will impact Evo, until it does.

Well there's your answer right there. Best Buy's plan costs more and covers less. Don't forget with TEP the only time you pay a deductible is for obvious physical damage and loss/theft.
I have mine insured through squaretrade.com. I paid $115.60 (with discount, which is easy to get) for 2 yrs of coverage for up to $599 (they have cheaper plans), full coverage including accidental handling. The ADH portion has a $50 deductible (if you drop it or immerse it in water) and if it's defective there's no deductible. I've dealt with them before and they had the funds in my Paypal account within 2 hrs of having received my broken phone. You don't get a loaner but you get full coverage (except for theft/loss) and no hassle.
So I dropped my phone 2 feet and it exploded and the screen is done. I'd post pictures, but it makes me sad.

As far as I know, you can only add Sprint TEP during your first 30 days. Check your credit card for accidental damage protection (Amex has 1 year extended warranty and 90 days accidental damage).
Repairing the screen probably won't be $550, but will be very expensive.
I'm sorry for your loss. As far as I know you can only sign up for insurance within a certain period of time after recieving the phone. I think you are past that timeframe.
I don't think there are any replacement screens available yet for replacing the glass yourself. You could search for something like that if you are the brave type, or look for a place that will repair it for you. But again, I don't think replacement parts are available yet.
In my opinion, if you want to avoid buying an expensive new phone I would buy the cheapest CDMA phone you can get from sprint (or Ebay) and wait until parts are available for the EVO.
Without insurance you are pretty screwed. You can try adding it to your Sprint account now and see if they will let you and wait 40 days or so to file a claim.
Either that or pony up the cash for one on ebay.
Amex protection, while they are amazing, will only cover what you spent on the phone.
So if you got the phone for $199, they will reimburse you what you spent on it, not the cost of the replacement at $499.
I went through this with my wifes Pre. Dog ate it after 80 days. Amex said they would give me $199 for it (what I spent) but would need the damaged phone as proof. It would cost me $499 for a new Pre. Luckily I had insurance. I asked Amex if they would pay the $100 deductible for the insurance, but my insurance company would want the damaged phone to see if they could repair it.
They immediately credited my account $100 and was happy about it. They did not need the phone back.
I buy everything on Amex. Everything.
But in your case you have two options. Buy a new phone, or try to get away with insurance fraud.

So Sprint added the insurance to my plan and told me it was active as of today. So I'm covered apparently, anyone know what it will cost me to use that insurance?

Luckily Sprint allowed you to add the insurance past your 30 day mark. I understand that insurance can be added "anytime", but I guess they fed me a line of B.S. when they warned me that after my 30-trial period, I couldn't add it.
Either way...$100 is a heck of a lot better then having to dish out the full price of the phone.
If you ever need insurance activate an old phone online then activate the one you need insurance on. It will let you add it then. It needs to be able to power on and join the network though.
My Sprint insurance runs 15 a month per phone.

Why? I have Total Equipment Protection (the best plan) and it is $7 per phone per month.
if sprint ever tells you that you can't add insurance tell them it's in the contract which it is, as long and they didn't kick you off because of too many claims ( i think 3 or more a year) they have to let you add it
If you would have gone to a service and repair store like mine, you would have been charged a $119 fee and then we could either replace the damaged parts if we have them, or order you a replacement. Then you could also add insurnace after that as well.
Best thing is that the Evo is not hard at all for us to work on. The only hard part would be getting a screen. I can have one taken apart and swap a screen in probably 15 to 20 minutes.

If you do have TEP physical damage will be covered (cracked screens ext.), batteries will be covered..everything short of water damage and damaged beyond repair (aka the main board is broken) with no deductable

You have it wrong. The main change is $35 charge. the average person will still used this less than once every two years. The insurance still doesn't make much more sense than it made int he past.
Sprint will treat non tep repairs for warrant issues exactly the same except for a $35 charge.
Sprint will replace phones for the same no deductible reasons as it did before with the exception of a $35 charge.
Paying the insurance still means all the odds have been figured and you are paying extra for insurance company profit, insurance company overhead, people who take inordinate risks with their phones, and people who game the system.
Insurance is always like playing against the house, insurance for losses that are not catastrophic rarely make sense
The huge benefit to the change now is that physical damage is now covered in store with no deductable. (Cracked screens, ex) which saves you 100 big ones.

This is all well and good but I would like to see a few people go into the repair center with some cracked screens to see if they get fixed. The phrase that scares me is "not repairable damage". The leaves things very loose, I would hate to take the insurance off my phone, accidentally drop is and then have the person at the repair center tell me that this is not repairable. I don't take paying 7 a month extra as a bet against the house, its more like piece of mind that I would never have to pay $450+ dollars out of pocket for my phone if something were to happen.

The cost to service is less for a non Tep customer than the deductible. Unless you are prone to lose or water damage your phone the choice seems clear.

For me it's been worth it. Over the last year, my wife has had her Moment stolen twice, and my son ran into the ocean with his Blackberry. Without TEP, I would have had to buy 3 phones at full price.
I'll never get rid of TEP. I've saved so much money from replacing phones. I seem to be cursed with bad screens, hinges, screens going white, etc... Alot of it happens out of warrenty.
I love TEP!

To me, it's just like a concealed handgun license. Better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it.

That is an extraordinarily irrational attitude toward spending. Why not then buy a second phone to: "have it and not need it"?
The fact is the insurance companies have already figured out whether you will "need it." They have the data and statistics. They figured out the odds, built them against you, added profit, overhead, fraud etc
And again this entire post relative to non TEP holders is for phones bought after Oct 25, sprint can't retroactively change existing purchases and charge for what they specifically advertised for as free when n those purchases were made. Sprint specifically said warranty work would be zero cost without TEP to people buying before last week.

No its not irrational. Would you rather walk in the store and walk out knowing your free replacement will be here the next day, or would you rather walk in the store, spend $35 and have it delivered?
Your attitude towards it would be like not having car insurance. I've had full coverage insurance on both of my vehicles since I've owned them, yet have not had any accidents or had to file any insurance claims..should I just not have insurance just because I haven't "needed" it?

I'll save the couple hundred dollars I'd spend total with TEP, pay the $35 and wait a few days.
I'm a single dad with two kids...the money's more important than the phone.

No it isn't. Car liability insurance protects you from loses in the millions, loses that do NOT decrease over the lifetime of your ownership.
Your phone goes from $600 to ~$200 in a year. The $600 phone I bought 18 months ago sells for $50 ebay.

You are confused about Sprints coverage in order to rationalize an irrational purchase. Last time I walked into a sprint store with a non functional phone -- and I have NO TEP or insurance with them, I walked out with a new in box 20 minutes later and paid no fee whatsoever.
You can't argue against the math. That it is not worth it and costs the average user more than benefit is an objective fact. If it weren't, it would cost more.
Please don't call the math irrational, when it is purely rational and the basis for profit of insurance companies, who employ better mathematicians and statisticians than NASA.
Al;so you are incorrect about the $35, that fee only applies to customers who purchased after Oct 25. (and even so it is worth it.)

Just to put it out there, I am a technician at a Sprint corporate store and we definitely charge the $35 even for those phones purchased before the date.

Thank you. I was about to post the same thing.
People, it doesn't matter when you purchased your phone. If you do not have TEP you will be assessed a $35 charge. And now, at least at my store, if a person comes in wanting to have their phone looked at under the manufacturers(sp) warranty, we provide them with the phone number to the specific manufacturer, andvise them of the 1-3 week wait period and inform them once again about the benefit of TEP. The only bright side is that after the initial $35 charge you now have 30 days in the event you do want to add the TEP to prevent any future hassels.
I just picked up two new phones, an evo and an epic, and I was considering getting ERP for each phone. Should I get TEP instead since Sprint changed its repair policy and no longer honors the manufacturer's warranty?
Y do ppl keep saying they don't honor the many warranty?

Not sure what Sprint does but HTC will obviously honor the warranty. Send it to them and they'll fix it for free as long as its covered under the free one year HTC warranty.
Yeah, send it to them at your own expense, and wait 5-10 business days to get it back.
It also better be in pristine condition, or they won't cover it.
As far as getting TEP vs ERP. If you don't have TEP, it's 35 bucks in store. So based on how often you think you will be in the store for repair or replacement, you should make a decision.

Yeah, I figured sending it to HTC isn't an option--I can't wait that long. I guess I'll just roll w/ ERP and pay the $35 if I need to. Does anyone know if it's $35 per repair visit or $35 per thing repaired? For example, is it $35 if I get 2 things fixed at once or will it be $70?

I sent mine to get repaired (broken digitizer; section of the screen didn't respond to touch) I had the hairline power button crack as well as a bunch of dings on the corners from dropping it. Guy on the phone said it might not be covered because of the hairline crack but it ultimately was. Cost $6 to fedex it to Texas, 6 days later it was on my doorstep with a replaced screen as well as a new black trim piece that had all the dings. If it isn't covered by the warranty they charge you the $35 in addition to repair costs. I only paid shipping on the way out and that was it. 6 days wasn't too bad of a wait, thought it felt like forever.

It's $35 total. If you had 2 things it's still just $35.

im not certain, but i think ERP is only for repairs. what ur paying for is Total Equipment Protection (TEP) which covers repairs and loss/theft.

i work for sprint, ERP is ONLY for loss/water damage through asurion, 100 dollar deductible. ESRP is for repair only through sprint, which doesn't cover water damage or loss. each are 4 dollars, but you can get them both for 7 dollars, which is called TEP

Ive got TEP for 7 dollars....Iver replaced 2 screens and and external speaker in store for nothing. took about 30 min each time. The first screen was from water damage and the second was because I literally used my Evo as a hammer and shattered the screen. They never asked how or why or even flinched in fixing it. Sprint is by far the best customer service Ive encountered in the cell phone world. Ive only been with sprint since the Evo came out.
Hmm, my next question is, how does this affect those of who bought Evos before this policy change and can no longer enroll in TEP, since 30 days have passed?

Get buddy buddy with someone at the sprint store and they can add it to your account.
Right now, I'm getting TEP for $4/mo =).
I wouldn't worry about it - TEP really only covers you for 2 things: 1, an insurance claim - water damage, lost/stolen, physical damage, phone won't power on at all, etc. This didn't change with the new policy, so if you were OK with taking this risk before I assume you're OK with it now. and 2: Repair at the service center (pretty much anything other than what has to go to the insurance company. Sprint will still repair your phone, it's just that there's a $35 flat rate for that now (before it was free in the first year, then $119.99 after that). So you might get stuck with the $35 repair cost, or the new policy might actually save you $84.99 if your phone breaks after the warranty is up. Either way that's cheaper than the $4 / month for ESRP unless you expect your phone to break more than once every 9 months.
I had my Evo replaced from Sprint with no insurance and was not charged a dime.
Because they can't fix software issues......

T-mobile is the best...
I call them and told them my g1 won't turn on,and I tried different battery. They mailed me a replacement and I sent the bad one back no cost to me
