I have this issue when i use the onscreen keyboard, when i go to press the spacebar, i quite often end up pressing the full stop/period key instead and it cheeses me right off!
Just this moment i thought i would use the landscape keyboard and i was typing away and used my right thumb as usual to press the spacebar, but it was a bit far and strained by thumb, so i thought i would use my left thumb, feels odd but i wasnt getting any full stop errors, or even accidently pressing the comma button (the button the otherside of the space bar) as the space bar in portrait is ever so slightly towards the left, meaning that the left thumb can hit the spacebar more accurately.
What thumb do you guys use to press the spacebar? and do you get this accidental full stop button press like i do?
if you press the space bar twice after a word it puts a full stop in and then a space. you may be doing this by accident. try using the tip of your finger and not the pad as it is more accurate that way.

i type pretty quickly and accurately with xt9, its just the damn spacebar which gets me....
try to increase/decrease tap time or time between taps!
i think bsb tweaks has a setting for that

why would that help? my problem is that my right thumb seems to in a better position to press the full stop. there is nothing wrong with the screen!

Hi all,
I need some urgent feedback from you good folks as I have been given until tomorrow to decide whether to send back my T-Mobile MDA Vario.
On the slide out keyboard, if I press the space/sym button lightly in the center it clicks once and if i press slightly harder it clicks a second time...
Is this meant to happen? Does anybody elses do this?

Mine makes a sound like it's clicking twice but actually only does one click.

When you say 'does' one click, do you mean in the software? So you only get 1 space in Word even though you're hearing/feeling 2 clicks?

That's what's happening with me, you can feel two clicks in the center but one if you press on either side, just one is showing in word.
So all Wizard Keyboards behave like this? At first I thought it may be something like a two function button ie. light press for normal space harder press for something else.
I looked in the manual for some kind of explanation but there's no mention of it...
If they really are all like this (keep the feedback coming pls) don't people find it really annoying to feel a double click happening on a frequently used button when all the other buttons function normally? (ie. click once)
The reason you get two clicks is because there's two of those little contacts below the space key - the reason for that, in turn, is that the key is pretty wide. These two contacts are on the same 'paths', though, so there's no differentiating a spacebar press on the left from one on the right.
The reason you only get 1 space is because, normally, if you press in the center in such a way that you happen to 'click' both left and right, it will be in such a short interval that the repeat is ignored. Try pressing any other key, such as a letter key, really fast (so not 'click click', but rather 'c-click') twice - it will also only enter the letter once.
It's not too annoying for me, as I either press it on the left or on the right, depending on which thumb happens to be nearest the key

I thought it might be something to do with 2 contacts under the space bar.
Since this is not a fault (design fault maybe ) I'm happy to aim my thumbs to the corners and will rest assured that I don't have a dodgy Vario

I have a question on how to make this phone better... I've never used the iPhone really, other than to jailbreak it for my fiancee. Now that I have the Vibrant, I noticed ridiculously difficult it is to place your cursor in a particular spot. You can't use a stylus, there's no "magnifying glass" like the iPhone has, and there are no arrow buttons on the on-screen keyboard (as there was on my HTC Touch Pro 2). Basically, it'll take me 5-6 taps (or more) to get the cursor where I want it.
Is there any app or hack that can fix this?
If you are using samsung keyboard, then keep pressing the "123" button until more controls shows up, theres cursor control.
You can flash or wait for froyo release it comes with a cursor

I couldn't the 123 option to work. When I press the 123 button, I get four pages of symbols... no directional cursor movements. What am I doing wrong?
If you are using the Swype keyboard, drag your finger from the Swype info button (bottom left corner) to the SYM key (next one to the right). Several cursor control options there, plus a few other handy items.
Also, if you didn't know, dragging from the Swype info button to the "F" key will switch the keyboard into a number keypad.

Awesome. Thanks for the help. It's exactly what I needed. Will hold me off until Froyo.
Alternativelly you can use the HTC_IME (which is the HTC keyboard) and set the volume buttons to work as up and down. Pretty handy when you want the cursor to skip a few characters. Though indeed the lack of cursor buttons always visible on the keyboard is kind of irritating especially if you come from an HTC.

I actually went through the process of installing the HTC keyboard, which I loved on my Touch Pro 2. It was laggy as hell and basically unusable. I also did not notice any directional arrows.
I've been meaning to try that keyboard again, since I did the one-touch lag fix. I'll do that right now.
**EDIT**
I can't find the option to use the volume buttons to move the cursor. It's also nowhere near as fast as the Samsung keyboard. Not sure why, but I have to seriously slow down my typing to get it to recognize each key press individually. I was hoping it would be better once I did the lag fix. I guess it's a separate issue...

Hmmm I do not have any lag issues with the keyboard.
Have you tried Calibrating it? That option is in Settings (within the program, activated by long pressing the language toggle key)>Text Input>Calibration tool.
Unfortunatelly, indeed, there are no directional arrows in the layout.
The option to set the volume buttons is in Settings (again, within the keyboard itself)>User Interface>Volume Keys.
EDIT: I don't really have any opinion about the default samsung keyboard as it does not support my language (go figure lol) so I have never used it.
Why is there no up/down/left/right key on the keyboard on messaging screen? don't this bug you? after typing a long paragraph and need to edit your fingers can't really tab the area needed to be corrected. Big problem for me. I need the arrows key!!!!!!!!!!!!!
figured it out. just like the iphone. hold down on the text then it pops up the space thingy. not as nice as the iphone one but it works.
Yeah if you hold down on the text, the little cursor thing pops up over your thumb and you can hunt down what you want to edit.
So I've had mine for a few weeks now, and I can still count the number of times I've used the physical keyboard on one hand lol. I'm not even sure why. It's fine when I use it, but the onscreen one is just -so- fast and responsive. I can type much much faster with the onscreen one.
On the flip side I like that it's there just in case I need it for some reason (needing to type something really specific, etc).
But yeah, how much do you use it?

same here, mainly because for some reason the fact that my phone has a smiley button is hilarious to me. Also, just a little fun fact, the keyboard backlight will turn on when you click on an area to enter text, but otherwise stays off. Nifty, ehhh?
I use my keyboard A LOT. I never entered text using the on screen keyboard, that is, until my screen light decided to start cutting off whenever I slid it out. Now I have to use the on screen.
Me too... I use it almost every day. Just can't seem to get the hang of the soft keyboard.
I use it every day, almost every single time i type something. it is just faster and more accurate.
Anything more than 5 words and I use the keyboard

You have to use the symbol key and then touch the right arrow key on the onscreen keyboard that pops up to get to it - pretty much the same way you would with the onscreen keyboard (&123 key then right arrow)
By the way, in case some don't know this, you can enter the blue (fn) function characters just by holding the physical key just a bit longer. Saves us from having to fiddle with the fn button everytime.

I also found something today. Long pressing the sym can switch input method. In my case, I can switch between English and Chinese. I might just be too retarded to find out earlier ~
I don't know why Samsung made the onscreen home button working even if you don't press it and just touch it. So is it possible to "disable" the home-button when I just touch it and make it only work if I press it hard so it gives the force feedback?

You can increase the sensativity of the hard press so it always acts as a press so you know
Go to settings - display - nav buttons and move the slider to more sensative

That's only for a hard press, so when locked, or in full screen for example. I don't think we can disable soft presses generally yet.

I thought that there is no normal touch on the home button when all the reports came about the new force touch button. I was expecting that Samsung replaced the old button with the force feedback one. But they just added normal on screen buttons like they are on 100s of other android phones. And I really don't see no need for the force feedback button because all it does you can also do with touching the button and not pressing it.
It would be great if Samsung changes the behaviour so that only a real press on the home button is working and not the touch.

And what phones have soft buttons that only work as hard buttons? Zero, stick to phones with physical buttons instead rather than hoping for an imaginary feature.
Actually I like the idea of pressure on the button as an option. We know it could be done if programmed right as the ability is right there, pressure sensitivity is built in under the screen.
This would be such a great idea. One of the reasons I hate onscreen buttons so much is that it's so easy to accidentally miss the space bar and tap the home button instead.

I'd actually prefer this too. It's weird that their whole promotion was around a pressure sensitive home button, but the way they set it up, it literally has no purpose.

You can press it to wake the phone up, you can press it to go home if you're watching a full screen movie or playing a game and the onscreen buttons aren't shown... ya i guess it's useless.
Interesting topic. So why has Samsung included a hard press home button? It doesn't​ do anything.

I'm pretty sure this is how the iPhone 7 home button works. It is not a physical button but a pressure sensitive area where the button used to be. Different actions for different amounts of pressure.
It would be great to have the whole display everytime and if you need the back button and the task manager button you could swipe them up (like on fullscreen apps) and you have always the sensitive home button. That would be 1cm more screen and no accidental clicks on the home button.
I guess that it has a reason why Samsung built a button but doesn't use it for real. And I found one possible reason: If you touch the display above the button and slide your finger to the center of the button you can't press it. You have to hit the button directly to press it.

I agree with the original poster. With the soft touch intact, what is the purpose of the hard press? You can't get to a hard touch without a soft touch so it is pointless, also, I use immersive mode so if I swipe up the nav bar, invariably it's from the centre so I accidentally trigger the home key.

Hard press (3D touch) is to make you always able to go home even when navbar is not present,
As for the rest of situation, soft press is more than enough to serve the function
So I dont really think enable only the hard press is actually a good idea.
