Official Android Rom for HD2 Petition - HD2 General

I went ahead and made a petition for Android on the HD2. HTC probably won't care and it sucks that it's come to this but whatever. At least this way we'd have an amazing device WITH an OS that will be supported down the line. Theres a field to state whether you're a current or potential owner as well. I couldn't hotlink since I'm a newb so add the www below...

Hmnn, good luck with that. I doubt that HTC would care. They are a commercial organsiation, they sell phones, hell, they've won, they got you (and me) to buy an HD2. I chose it for what it was at the time, and it's still the same excellent phone. Developments and politics surrounding Windows Phone 7 Series hasn't affected it's ability to operate. HTC will be wanting people to buy Desires and Supersonics and whatever the next big Android phone is. You might get Android via the back door if someone ports it from a similar spec'd device but i honestly think nothing official will happen. The small number of people interested in migrating their HD2's to Android would be a tiny drop in a massive ocean of commercial opportunities for HTC (but how many people would demand it it to be free if HTC offered it but asked for a porting charge for any driver development changes?). I really don't think that the disappointment felt by some that their HD2's won't be officially, and freely, upgraded to Windows Phone 7 Series is of interest to HTC (or Microsoft either).
That's my honest opinion. Good luck.

there's no way in hell HTC would do this with Desire coming out.

I'm with u Pikasso1, it would be nice to have another O.S in our HD's (Android, linux), only to **** MS to hell!, in my opinion, I don't care if MS brings WinMo 7 to another phones and not to HD2, with 3, 4 or 532 buttons, I piss off over it, I changed from an I900 Omnia to HD2 by the capacitative screen ONLY (I use caps lock to mark the only reason, not big screen, SnapDragon, or nothing else), MS tells us that don't upgrade, HTC get a slap in the face, ****'em & HTC!, the phone itself it's a big machine, I can do a lot of things (even call! ), I think there is HD2 for long (and WinMo 6.5 too), I'll can see videos, hear music, surf internet, and a lot of things without WinMo 7 or another O.S.
How many phones with WinMO are on market? 0?, not yet?, how many with another 6.0, 6.5? millions?, it's like a big soccer score!, in my country there is a phrase to describe this moment...to MS & HTC...Zas! en toda la boca! (Peter Griffin).

i signed it, but htc would never do this... it would kill desire & supersonic

Sigh... it's true, but it's so rare that T-Mobile US gets good hardware and the one time it does... well, you know. I'd switch carriers if I wasn't paying $70 per month for unlimited everything.

Ha, it won't even let me quote your hotlink.

Actually, I haven't bought one yet, but I'm on T-Mobile and I want one! But it's harder to justify the purchase right now. It's my favorite hardware design by a wide margin though. Plus I just thought, why not make a petition?

Well I would pay for the Android port, just for the choice, we all switch roms to improve performance. So switching between OS gives more choice, but it's not gonna happen.....…

Double LOL on this, what would be next, a petition to FORD to make an alectric engine for your car with diesel engine?
You bought winmo device not an open platform hardware.

MS should read this forum and find out how bad they truly are...
maybe they aldready have..

signed the petition.... expected to see alot more sigs on there than 33

signed.. we need more people!!!

Well I signed, a famous saying springs to mind..... Judge not those who try and fail, but those who fail to try....
Just sign any way, you never know.

seriously, terribly disappointed that w7ps would not be made available to the HD2 just because of the button layout.
screw you HTC!

Signed it just for fun and to see how many people this hits... I expect we'll see a good 100 people or so, which would be a drop in the ocean next to the several hundreds of thousand HD2 owners there must be, i.e no single bit of value whatsoever

Its Microsoft you should be saying "screw you" to if you actually want WP7S not HTC...

Signed with the below comment...
"HTC have two options either allow continued HD2 support via Android or shell out for WM6.x AND WP7S support people. You know where the smart money is HTC. Let XDA-Devs look after WM6.x and HTC can officially offer Android 2.x with support."

HD2 pricing now that we know there is no upgrade to 7

Do you think prices for the phone will start falling? The phone is essentially a dead end unless the wizards of xda cook something up.
I cannot stand this blabbering about "HD2 as a dead phone". There is NO WP7S to come within the next at least 6 months... AND WP6.5.x seems to go on. HD2 is still THE phone that you have to buy today if you want by far the best Win-Phone. The prices won't suffer some kind of inflation too soon... It hasn't been launched in the US at all and it stays the HTC-flagship until HD3 will be launched in the end of this year.
Well the price for the phone through mobile service providers is already low... I got mine for 79€ and another 24 months commitment.
I don't really see why they'd bring the price down any lower... They never claimed it would be upgradable to WP7 so why should they feel obliged to lower the price?
Am I the only one who wants to wait and see what WP7 turns out like before even considering using it? I think it looks interesting but I'm far from sure that it will be able to meet my needs as well as the HD2 and WM6.5 does.
US phones
It essentially is a dead end product. We don't know if xda's cooks will be able to get 7 going on it. I'd like to buy a phone that will last me a couple of years. The Australian version that works with AT&T here in the US, is still very expensive for us. Almost $1,000. Too much money for me. I can't imagine switching over to t-mobile though.
Price will come down anyways. It will take some times but you can get them with some carriers for cheaper as other posters have mentioned.
I don't see any relationship between the price and actually the phone not being upgradable to WP7.
It is still too early to see anything.
IF there is a "WP7-related" price fall at some point, it won't be before WP7 devices are actually selling. You've got time ahead.
Are all the people who keep repeating HD2 is 'dead-end', 'outdated', 'old', 'no wp7 upgrade' looking to buy up some cheap HD2s on ebay?
it is a dead end NOW, cause developers are ALREADY abandoning wm6.5.x
like adobe, skype and a lot more.

why on earth you say such bulls**ts?
Dead end my a$$! There are people all over the world working with their HTC Touch Diamond and WM6.5 with the help of xda's chefs!
You got the most powerfull device on the market and you already say that is dead while WM6.5 was released no more than 6 months ago? Dear friend you're totally OUT! You better buy an Iphone and work with a closed minded, kid oriented operated system istead of the best OS and phone on the market.
The HD2 is the BEST phone on the market today, no questions and I think it will not be reached very soon. Fast, smooth and good looking.
With help of the chefs, this device will last very long.

Is there an official statement of any of that from MS themselves? Or are you just jumping on the bandwagon and spouting "what I 'eard of't internet"

Android on the HD2: a few word from Europe

Just to let you know:
For all the users in Europe, the HD2 with Android seems to be the only chance to get some kind of a light version of the "HTC EVO 4G". In fact, there wouldn't be that much difference.
The Motorola Milestone (= your "Droid") has not only a signed bootloader wich only accepts signed images, it also has a hughe bug in audio quality.
And the Desire (= 99% your Nexus one) has a crappy screen! (due to the Pentile Matrix of the AMOLED Display)
Alternatives? NO! At least nothing in the "Nexus class".
Android on the HD2 would not only be a "geek hack" or just "fun". It would be something awesome and insane, no other product or money could give you (at least in Europe, where we might never see the EVO 4G)
I and a big bunch of other users here, "over the pond", really, really hope, the XDA Devs will make it!
My honest respect and good luck to all the Devs who might bring a second Christmas Day into 2010 with Android on the HD2.
This is not limited to the fine folks on the other side of the pond. I'm in the states with an HD2 (duh) on T-Mo. Not to say T-mo is the end all beat all, buy I really don't wan't to go Sprint. Nothing against the Sprint network, as my professional experience shows it's as good if not superior to T-Mo in my area of travel.
Still, I would love to have an android device that's fully functional. And since I have not the technical where-with-all, I rely, as usual, on the brains here at XDA.

these threads are just annoying, its not on the hd2 yet, maybe one day, you had 14 days with most networks to return the phone and change it a android phone, yeah be cool if it comes in hd2 if it doesnt so what!!! same with WP7 if either of them cone cool.

Exactly, most people who bought the HD2 bought it because it's a WinMo phone. That's how most smartphone users pick their phone... by what os it runs. Why would you buy a WinMo device if you didn't want a WinMo device? If you bought it just for the big screen or fast processor, you're impatient and dumb.... there will be phones just as fast with just as big screens for android soon enough. Even the next iphone will have a processor just as fast and have a higher-resolution screen (although, not quite as big).

alldino, I think you didn't get me!
I don't own a HD2. I have a Milestone (US=Droid) and a Desire (US=Nexus).
The Milestone has a big bug in speech quality, the Desire has a crappy screen.
So there is actually no device with "perfect hardware".
The HD2 does have a great hardware, but WinMo - and I want Android!
and btw. there is NOT much difference between the HD2 and the EVO 4G!
"Just" a higher MP cam, HDMI and more RAM and ROM as far as I know off-hand now.
this will be my one and only reply in an "android on hd2" thread (not including the one that, one day, will officially announce android for hd2 )
IMVHO, if something "linux-ish" has to be ported to HD2, it would be extremely silly that it was android. Android!=linux, linux>>android
Android comes from linux, but it's so underdeveloped and sectorialized that it retains just a little bit resemblance with the flexibility of proper linux.
I am really counting on the fact that something like meego will come to the HD2.
Luckily, as soon as it will be possible to port android, it will always be possible to port meego/moblin/maemo to it.

I, too, look forward to the linux kernel port being completed and seeing the different os's that get ported. Meego would be awesome... I haven't had an opportunity to play with it, unfortunately, so a port to the HD2 would provide me that opportunity. I'd also like to see Ubuntu on the HD2. Android will be nice because of the variety of apps it will open the HD2 up to, but I wouldn't use android full-time. But thats why I love the idea of using haret to boot the linux kernel... I get to keep winmo as my main phone os, but can boot up a linux os when I want to.

Any chance you could tone down the language?
I personally bought the Hd2 simply because the hardware is just awesome. Never used Winmobile before so I really didn't know what to expect and quite frankly I don't think it's as stable as the Iphone I sold to get the Hd2. Does that bother me? Nope, not a bit. To me, the tweaking and modding, hacking etc... that's the fun part. Android? I say, bring it on! The more I can modify and tweak and hack, that makes me a happy camper!
I, unfortunately, also don't have the expertise to write the coding to do these marvelous things so I'm also waiting patiently for some of the supergeeks,(and I mean that with the utmost respect), to come up with these solutions and programs so that I can run whatever OS that's available for my new toy. I say, the more choices I have, the more fun I'll have!

Should we be thinking of ways to get rid of it?

-No win7 support , although even though our hardware if far supperior to the win 7 devices currently
-horrific support (HTC has to be nobel price winning at sucky support)
-battery life is amazingly bad..some members here report success with alternative chinese batterie types, but come on we paid our bottoms off for the thing we shouldnt have to bleed our eyes out on 3rd party web merchant pages
-its being discussed that we are not even going to get 6.5.3 or 6.5.5 upgrades even though omnia II and toshiba models will(or have dunno)
-millions of buggs that shouldnt be there in the first place
-lack of supported apps
-overpriced marketplace
Such a mixed feeling..I truly and deeply love the device i hold in my palm as i write this..but its like i am holding the hand of a relative in a hospital dieing..is truly HTC gonna give away the future of such a brilliant phone?have we payed 50% more of the value of the competitor's phone(iphone) price and go nowhere (while they get their free os 4 upgrade) ? i feel so decieved..i even got to thinking ways i could cheat for my warranty to get my money back..
-edit : forgot the 250ms sound delay woe issue (one of the reasons we bought this cursed phone was to watch movies in its perfect screen dammit)
You got what you paid for, the hardware is already surpassed by the Evo 4G, in a few months time it will be even farther behind, such is the way of tech. WP7 was never promised, only speculated so that is not a valid argument.
Your other reasons are otherwise sound to varying extents, but at the end of the day this is still a fantastic device, so no, I dont think anyone who bought the device and is happy should be looking for ways to get rid of it. If you dont like it, return it or sell it but it works very well for a large number of us.
So that the fact that they do not even care enough to upgrade it to something as idioticaly as simple as 6.5.3 version (hich like 40 roms in here have) doesnt make u feel they are throwing the phone support (that made me laugh) away?
And no, i do not get what i paid for..i paid nearly 800$ for this..no not even marginaly close to it.

No, I agree totally with your view of HTC support, I actually think they are the worst phone manufacturer among WM OEM's, contrary to what everyone else thinks because they like the eye-candy of Sense, which I think is utter bug-ridden rubbish.
HTC has the HD Mini out now, you would think they would be releasing 6.5.3 updates for all their phones, especially the HD2, but this is typical HTC, once a device is released the normal support life cycle is 6 months, then we are left to our own devices while they work on the next device. In the current climate, HTC is apparently focusing entirely on their android phones, so we WM users are left to look on and lament our lack of updates.
As for getting what you paid for, I guess we will have to disagree, I never expected HTC to provide an update to 6.5.3, knowing their past history and considering they never announced it. I knew I could only count on the OS they shipped the device with, and anything above that would likely come from Xda.
You have a great device there, the hardware is top notch and capable of outstanding performance, just dont look to HTC for any kind of realistic support. Xda is your friend and will give better support and performance enhancements than HTC ever has.

You seem to be stuck in a mindset which goes against that of technological advancements over the last, say, 50 years.
The computer you buy tomorrow was out of date last week, that surround sound system you've got, that's been surpassed several times since you bought it.
You do realise that the iPhone OS upgrade was to insert features that most phone companies have been producing lines of phones with for almost a decade?
Cut and Paste for instance, was first used (in a computer sense) in a Xerox environment in the 1960s, Apple's iPhone was announced in 2007. It didn't support it until an OS upgrade. The first Windows PocketPCs in the mid/late nineties had it as standard.
The iPhone's hardware is 50% of the capacity of the HD2, maybe you did get what you paid for?
Ur point seems truly valid, but dammit thats not what i signed up for..(even though it was contract reneweal bonubs 650$ bonus to get new phone) this is no way to treat a heavily paying customer..and i am not obligated to know the tradition of customer handling of each company each time i buy a phone..i know the phone is amazing , but its dead..truly dead..and mark my words when in a couple months the new candies come to surface no1 in xda will care to develop roms in this long dead phone....at least those 800$ taught me 1 thing i guess ..never buy anything from htc again

The HD2 is far from dead.... there will be people making roms and writing apps for it for years still. It's gonna be known as the last great WinMobile phone. It will remain as the best WinMobile 6.5 device, and for that fact, I think it will last longer than most phones do.
There are still people supporting phones from 5 years ago on these forums.
What is it that you signed up for? Nothing was promised for this phone other than what came with it. HTCs customer service sucks, but they make some great devices, and with them we get XDA support here! Thats much better than the support any other oem gives, imo.

this was a comment because imho past devices were not as promising as the imminent are..nevertheless my problem is that i the services that came with my purchase feel like being molested..absolutely no future in it from the developer's end..i really dont know if its that typical of HTC to manage in that manner, and if it is is till do not know why this company still exist.
Got what I wanted!
I researched for months, got what I wanted, & what they said it had! Runs smooth, no bugs,"except audio booster" Would not trade for wm7, don't like how it will hold you down. I also pd alot for mine!! But I'm still sooooo happy. Love it. Sounds like you need to trade every month to try to keep up? Quig

Issues mentioned in forums are negatively biased. People with problems are more likely to come here and post their problems as opposed to the many people who are not having problems.
Secondly, if you want to troll, do it on MySpace. April 2010 join date, seriously? If you don't like your phone, sell it and be done with it. Stop whining because you didn't have the common sense to read the labels on what exactly HTC is selling in the HD2. HTC is a phone manufacturer. Ergo, their job is to keep selling phones, even if it means phasing out past models. If you do not agree with this business strategy, go with another company that suits your needs.
How many 1000's are in use?
You have to realize how many of the hd2's are in use! I wish someone would count the number of people on these forums that are having problems, since they come here to get fixes. Not too many people go to forums, if everything is working ok. We have over 7000 members on htchd2forum.com the % is pretty clear, most are great!! Think about it,"if your car runs ok, do you go to dealer & tell them? If it is giving you trouble ,you call, complain, go in, get it fixed? HUH? wierd concept!! Sorry, got going,, I like this phone better than anything I've ever had!! But that is"me" not "you"! Goodluck,,Quig

I GUESS I really didnt know the HTC way of thinking...apple and android seem to get it a lot different..although they state 6.x phone support is not halted it indeed is..no upgrades,no updates,no nothing...i guess i should start flashing or im stuck with the ton of problems bundled in my handheld
I dont see the point in making these kind of thread. What will u get from these?
If u have problem, then try to search and solve it.
If u dont like the phone, then try to sell it.
Is it easier to feel better than making these threads and have most of people tell that u wrong here?
As far as I see, most of people who complain about their devices are people who just joined in to ask and complain. They messed up with their phone then try to get people to help them fix it. This phone is just amazing and works out of the box.
Let's compare the ones that have problems with the ones that dont, who only focus on flashing and trying roms. Maybe at a rate of 100 and 10000?
Hey guys!
I think chris2busy actaully does like the phone, but he is probably just really fustrated with the lack of support. I mean, usually, wouldnt it make sense that if you had issues with a certain product you have purchased from a certain company, then u should get all the support from them(Mostly). But for me, this forum is my support.
Also, I too agree with the point that why on earth, after paying so much money, do we have to rely on third party apps to tackle issues that shouldnt really be there in the first place? I mean, why doesnt it just simply work right out of the box? Dont get me wrong, i love customising my phone, but these customisations should really be for "customising" our phones with what suites us & looks good in our eyes....not to fix issues that HTC/WinMo shouldve done. I still love my HD2 but these are just some things we ALL couldve done without......
Finally, No, we shouldnt be thinking of getting rid of this phone as its "Kick Ass!"
(watched the movie last night, so still in that mood!)
I do not like this moaning and groaning, It has been posted recently that it takes time to know your new device. If you're not willing to spend that time, then stop harrassing us/this forum with your "complaints". By the way: what's the point of your post anyway?

win mobile 6.5.3

Anyone know why HTC have not released an official rom with this update, or even if they ever will release it? Cheers.

Several reasons.
1. It would cost them money.
2. Not developing it encourages people to buy new phone models with 6.5.3, or WP7 which makes HTC more money.
Witch is also the reason why we'll not have wm7.
I understand them not giving us wm7 (SORT OF), but 6.5.3 is just an update to what we already have, I thought it was standard to get these updates with windows phones, like auto updates on the pc. If this is how they carry on then this will be my first and last htc / windows phone. (Yes i could just flash an unofficial rom, but I have this phone on an 18 month contract so cant afford to kill the warrenty) Its like MS creating a sevice pack but not releasing it officially. So which new phones come with 6.5.3? I cant think of any.

Actually 6.5.3 or 6.5.x is way more than an update, they changed several things , so it really does not qualify as an update , more like a new sub-version ...
HTC have never been good with providing updates.
Given they have about 10 phones/year in a single category, they have no care for users of 'obsolete' (in their eyes) phones
And what's this talke of witches?
"us" get it in the backside!
htc, may be bad with updates. however us in the US have only gotten one update. it is like every other week i see an update or hotfix for every other country! we are so lucky to have a great place like this to get our phones even close to as updated as the rest of the world!
THANK YOU XDA and all of the great and generous developers that make it this great!

How hard is it for HTC to sort out a new rom with the latest 6.5x, cooks on here do it no trouble, and like peeps are gonna go out n get a new handset just for what is really just an update to what they already have, like I said, windows phone 7 is a brand new o.s, and I understand not getting that for free, but the 6.5x are just updates making it how it should have been in the first place. I would have though HTC would want to look after there existing customers, not make em feel like there brand new phones are outdated a week after they have got them. Like a HD2 owner is gonna go out and buy a brand new phone with 6.5x on it with 7 around the corner, so why not hook the peeps with 6.5 up, thus ensuring customer loyalty?

Have an iPhone 3G and it is JBd and unlocked. Refuse to keep updating it via iTunes. Apple has a good piece of Hardware, a lot of good apps, but they refuse to allow people who bought their phone and now own their phone to customize it. That is pure 'Dicktatorship.' LOL
Freedom of choice and optimization/customization is what makes us the USA!
So, iPhone or HTC, AT&T or T-Mobile is a choice you have. Apparently your choice is?
Thanks for your Opinion.

whats HTCs reaction to this development?

is HTC quietly standing by?
supporting?
or trying to prevent the further development?
because from the company's point of view we are cutting into their cash by preventing people from buying a new model of android phone.
i ve seen what happened to alot of gadgets that got hacked and then company usually releases an update that prevents further hacking and prevents from downgrading.
seagate HT+, apple newest iphone firmware, archos502 etc.
what are che cances of HTC working on a lock out for the HD2 specifically?
the only development we have here for HD2 and android...
In your post you fail to state what development you are talking about.

I think he is talking about porting android to the HD2. I dont think they would care seeing as how many people, myself included bought an HD2 because of android development going on. If this didn't happen I would think they would have sold less phones.
Theoretically they shouldn't care since at the end of the day we bought their product irregardless to what OS was on there. If anything, I would think Microsoft would get pretty upset and take action if we continued on the path to porting WP7 on the HD2.

not if you buy from their market place
at the end of the day. microsoft is just like google. a software company. they want their software on as much phones as possible. if you happen to be an hd2 user who is running windows 7 and buying stuff from their market place, then awesome to them.
htc is the one who would be pissed. because you didnt change ur HD2 and buy a new phone windows 7. they lost 1 customer " figure of speach "
i dont see them happy that android is working on hd2 . they lost desire hd sales.
you know where i am going with this. for hardware companies, this is bad.
for software companies like microsodt and google ? the more the better.

True but not completely true!
HTC is definitely loosing by not selling new phones but winning by selling more HD2s!!! (as i've read many bought HD2 just for porting android!! Really weird but it's true!!)
Both Google(android) and Microsoft(WP7) are winning and loosing at the same time!!!!
How is that you might ask?!
You are using their product, you are making propaganda, you are paying for apps from marketplace... It's all good!
However you are not purchasing their OS! As you know part of the price of a phone goes to the OS company! So practically it's true that you have ported their OS but you didn't actually buy it!
There are actually two sides to this story: Yes, making Android possible on a HD2 will indeed keep people using their HD2 in stead of buying a new android phone so from a short term point of view on might say that this has a negative effect on sales.
On the other hand, phone sales is mainly driven by "sponsored sales" by phone operators. A lot of phones get replaced after the initial contract periods regardless whether it is still usable. Only a relative small group of people actually use custom roms/android installs, but they spread a lot of good publicity about HTC and its possibilities. HTC is the fastest growing company at the moment, showing 139% growth in Q2 this year compared to Q2 last year. Still, Samsung is holding 20% of the market and HTC less than 2%, so enough room for expansion.
To cut a long story short: I don't think they mind too much, they probably watch this forum closely, pick up ideas for development and just let XDA do the marketing for their brilliant smartphones.
i agree with the post above me.. i don't think HTC cares much about the android port.. besides, i think they owe it to us.. coz like M$, they said that there will be a free wp7 upgrade for our phones.. so, since there's no wp7 upgrade for our phone, they should give us android instead... and they can't do anything about the android port anyways, as android is an open source program.. but if HTC was apple though, things would be different.. a lot different..
Ive got a few mates who bought or are planning to buy a hd2 simply because it allows the dualboot.
I dont think HTC should be complaining as XDA has made their devices much more interesting then most others.
I even think that without XDA or any chefs HTC would see their sells go down fast
I think that quietly they helped us to run android on hd2.They give the kernel sources of desire and other android phones,so the developers of porting android to hd2 can take some code from there and port it to hd2
Also they give us the new 3.14 rom with radio 2.15.50 who gives us the ability to run android without the need of hspl and losing the warranty.

That is not because HTC is somehow beneficial, they have to release the kernel sources or else their license to distribute their modified kernel (by selling phones in this case) is void.
True, they may be losing some sales because of android port on HD2. Many people with HD2 may have had shifted to Android phones including myself...but since Android is running on HD2 and its running fine...I've decided to postpone an upgrade...
But I think HTC has gained from XDA then it lost...if it weren't for XDA, HTC wouldn't have been the company we all know it...things are different now because HTC has now become popular but initially in WM days people bought HTC phones because of great XDA support otherwise it may just ended up like an ordinary Taiwanese manufacturer like ASUS, etc in phone market...

That's the exact reason I bought the HD2. I was going to get an iPhone otherwise. HD2 > iPhone in every aspect except for Android (which was my deciding deal, I found out you could dual boot)
While I agree with a lot of the aspects of both winning and losing, in the end, HTC wins. Some of you say that they are losing be side of an upgrade, if you think about it, they still win. Why?
Let's say the HD2 costs $200(not sure...) if people were to buy 2 or 3 times as many HD2 devices, that beats an silly update which costs only $200?...They look at it in a BUSINESS perspective. And the numbers prove the best move.
In addition to, Google is much happier, that there OS is going to more devices. The small OS fee for factory devices hurts none. In the end, more people by from the Market. Even if it does hurt them, the publicity is well worth it, and will prove them good in the end. Besides, XDA has helped HTC, so I would be disappointed to see HTC block what XDA's main source comes from..... Everyone is happy, unless Microsoft were to complain, but even then, HTC could easily support Android instead, which I believe they will do eventually.
And in another addition to, I'm sure many people have multiple HD2 one Android, one Windows Mobile, or even both Android. You can't beat that.... HD2 is quite distinct. They may even support the movement, and design a newer HD2 that will be (secretly) compatible with both OS, as the devices we are using now work very well with both.
I think it has done more good than bad, so what's there to concern HTC.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
HTC aren't Apple - they aren't megalomaniacs. From their perspective, all this hacking and modding is just free marketing, brand awareness and of course brand loyalty, as a result of HTC devices being known to be flexible, you are more likely to pick up another HTC than say, Samsung.
I'll go one further and say i reckon that there is a chef on here or maybe more than one who are employed by HTC but obviously this isn't public knowledge and they could lose their jobs if found out,it's well possible.
If HTC were really that bothered being a global company they could have instigated some type of legal action against this website allowing people to hack their product, im not sure exactly what but realistically they could prevent this from happening if they were really bothered.

When I was first looking at widows phones and I saw XDA and the work being done I was sold I started with the T-mo MVA then the S620 (t-mo Dash)-the TyTN- which i replaced with a tp2 which i Just sold. I still have my HD and HD2 for dual boot but I'm at the crossroad should I just get android like the MyTouch 4g or the desire HD??? Point is only because of the amazing and innovative work here at XDA did I try out and stay with windows other wise I would have ended up with 'shudder" the Icrap or crackberry...
My guess is that for corporate reasons they have to advise against it and can not support the work openly but I'm sure that they enjoy and are happy to have the free publicity and the building of brand loyalty as well as the development work and seeing how HTC Sense can be developed and customized by people like Cookie and Max for them for free, is an added bonus.
As for phone sales lets be honest despite 3 or even 2 year contracts the average reliability of most phones is about 18-24 months sometimes less and the handset makers know that and base there future sales on that not on the rarer cases of people who were going to buy a new phone after 9-12 months but kept it because of duel boot.
Personally, I think it is a win, win situation for HTC and Google for this device to have the dual boot ability. I am on AT&T, have an unlocked HD2 that runs Windows Mobile as well as 4 different builds of Android. I don't think you can get much more versatile than that. Personally, I am not worried about, nor in any hurry for NAND boot capabilities for Android on the HD2, that would just cause a new set of headaches in the early stages. Not to say that I won't give it a shot after it has been publicly released for quite a while, but as I stated above, I am in no hurry at all.
I traded one of my HTC Touch Pro 2's for this carrier unlocked T-Mo HD2 a couple of months ago and it had nothing but problems as it still had the stock ROM on it. I did the Hard SPL, flashed it with a custom ROM and the rest is history. This thing is a tremendous device, even if I do not get 3G speeds on the AT&T network. There is no 3G service in my area anyway so I don't think I am missing out on much at all.
XDA Devs - Don't stop what you are doing as far as Android on HD2 development. HTC could learn a few things from you folks!
HTC - Keep up the great work and keep on releasing these great devices!
GooG - Same thing, keep those fresh Androind builds coming!
AT&T - Get a clue as to what your customers want and quit bottling Steve Jobs crack sweat (iPhone) and shoving it under your customers noses! And if you are going to claim the biggest 3G network, actually create and maintain that network to make the statement true!
My .02 ..... HTR
The only reason I got an HD2 is for the Android experience and the potential to run WP7 on it. Win Mo 6.5 sucks (in my opinion) but I am still rocking an HD2 because of what it can do, and because the hardware is awesome.
I think HTC as a company would be happy that enough people like their hardware that they are willing to buy the HD2 just to run a (less than stable) version of Android off an SD card. Tthe HD2 hardware is amazing, and HTC is more in the hardware business than anything.
Think of it this way, its like buying a Dell computer with Windows 7 and installing Ubuntu on it. Does Dell care? Nope, they sold the hardware so they're happy.
I dont think that they lose as much business as one might think.
I was at my local T-Mobile store yesterday morning to pick up the MyTouch 4G...I love HTC devices because of what devs here at XDA do for them and have owned quite a few (MDA, Dash, Wing, TP2, G1, MT3G, Nexus One, HD2...and now MyTouch 4G) I still show all of my phones affection and still cruise the different sub forums here and keep my phones updated on the newest builds, but HTC hasn't (and never will) lose me as a customer.
Sure, there are some people who will buy phones from places like craigslist or ebay, and HTC does not see any monitary profit from transactions like this...but I am sure that they win a future customer when that same person walks into their carriers store with an upgrade available and sees a new HTC device...Especially those who find their way to forums such as XDA. No device will last forever and will need to be upgraded eventually...and I feel that HTC has built a great name for itself.
