I mean really! Do you think its coming - HD2 General

Do you really think that WP7 is coming to the HD2. you would have to assign the buttons again. you would need a dedicated search button, a camera button so engadget says. my views are that WP7 aint comin.

Engadget lost its credibility a long time ago.

with long time using htc phones i think it is not coming (remember hd1)

The HD2 doesn't have the search button and no Cam button... So what!
it can run 6.5.. without those buttons.. and we all know its possible to run wp7 on it..
So the posibility is there...
only thing is that HTC and Microsoft should agree to give us an update..
@HTC come on you've charged us +550 euro for this phone and no upgrade??
so if its about $$$$, I think the upgrade to wm7 is allready integrated in the +550 price..

It may not come from HTC but it will come... The Tytn2/Kaiser's latest official release was WM6.1 and there are many many WM6.5 custom ROM's on this forum for it

For the required buttons story, remember that for WM 6.5, it was "required" to have a hardware start button, yet the omnia II lives perfectly without any...
It can happen, and i really would like it to happen, but only time will tell, and so will MIX next month, i hope...

I heard from a tweet by HTC Russia that yes, is comming to HD2

at this point who really cares . with touchXperience coming our way this will blow away the (zune HD) windows 7 phone. it was desperate move by MS , and they havent brought anything new to the mobile community , just their version of catching up with others and what has already been done ( out there )
its zune with a few new things IMO .
but again , its just my opinion and i am happy with my tricked out HD2 .

It'll happen, though maybe not officially, and that is might be a GOOD thing!
I cannot help but wonder that if there were an "official" WP7 ROM update, there'd also be a greater likelihood that HTC could do "something" to it to prevent HSPL, etc. and restrict our use of cooked ROMs. We all know that they know what is going on over here, and they are none too happy about it, but who cares?
No, I'll just wait until our wonderful resident chef's cook something up, which if history teaches us anything, is going to be a lot SOONER than HTC will deliver anything anyway. No worries. It's coming. One way, or another.
The question is whether we'll actually want it.

hmm all this crap**** about missing buttons is a whole load of BS (sorry the choice of words but i cant find any othe that fit better )
A OS can NOT Tell what the graphical picture/sign ontop of a button looks like and actually it couldnt give a **** about that pic, or have you seen an OS where a Webcam is needed so it can "see" what pic is on the button? Well i havent. . A programmed line in th code tells the OS that that button has this or that function. So could we please get past all this stupid, senseless nagging and moaning please?????
Windows 7 Mobile needs 3 Buttons, whoopie that means we have 2 free to reassign/rip out and throw away or whatever.
Anyway untill Win7Mob ever comes out to the market, then and only then will we be able to say what goes and what not.
Well, thats my 5c worth to all these win7mob threads popping out all over the place..

Shift delayed until Febuary.

http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2008/01/12/htc-keeps-letting-the-shift-shift/
Well the shift looks like has been delayed again now till Febuary. The reason why? Looks like HTC now cant decide if the shift should be shipping with the phone or not is one of the reasons. looks like they do read these forums and are really considering have it ship stock with voice capabilities out of the box.
How do I know this? well my new source just told me this. who is it? well our very own boygenius has emailed me that they are currently still deciding on this issue and its contributing to why the shift has been delayed.
The latest rom i have did still have phone settings in it so looks like they are swaying still towards it shipping with phone.
Now this kinda proves what i kept on saying that it had the phone abilities. what i was never sure of is if it will ship. we now know they are deciding on it.
That's nice to know... actually I just pre-ordered one.
but at least I'm happy cuz now every body can belive pawel was right!
I think still have to use the athena project's os for use full wm6.
I donated athena project...... mm.... actually not that much amount..
but I really want to say thank to athena project guys...
ok good news (even if delay are not so fun), I hope they understand why it is so important to have phone capabilities .. they put a SMS section on their shift support webpage ... if they remove this ability I think it will be a real problem because we all know about this ability and we'll never accept losing it. I own an HTC Touch but will be really happy to have a shift with phone + my Touch .. both are for different use (one as an calendar and real phone) and the shift allow me not to bring my touch all the time. I can choose which one I took .. I can't bring the shift to a party, to some holidays .. because there are too many risks of losing it, being stolen, etc.. so I would really enjoy both.
But what about the Origami 2.0 package? The shift had this package at CES2008... and it would be the PERFECT "official" reason for a delay. I think that with this package the shift will be THE BEST UMPC for more than a year.
Thanks for the news, I hope we will have more news in the coming days and weeks
ANOTHER delay?
Why don,t they just get the device out there with everything enabled and let the user choose how they wanna use it!?.
Who are they? Microsoft??
C'mon guys at HTC! just release it! We'll hack your ROMs anyway......

It's not only about choice .. the delay comes from many reasons ... yes there are some choices to be made.. but there are issue about the number of shift to produce.. I have heard about CPU for the WM6 part that were not enough produced by Qualcomm and that was the big reason for the delay .. so we'll see
Hi, me tells a german distributor, that HTC has a "special Chinese Year" (like the chinese Year of the dragon, religion) within that, the people works not so a lot and be more relaxed, so that all things that come from there have delivery problems..
maybe i dont now it´s true, but that tell me a distri ;-)
i´m very angry about HTC politics, first they tell some specifications and later the dont have this specifications. (HTC Touch DUAL and S730 without GPS) I tell my users one half year ago, wait please for the new modells with GPS, and then, they change her product spezifications 1 months before to "without gps"..
i´m very angry, i´m sell and support many years with htc devices, i deployed and report many problems with the devices to htc or to the distris, sells more than 3000 devices since start with Wallaby/MDA ..
maybe it´s time to change again.
but we will see, i test the shift - is it right than we stay - is not i search again - i found always a other solution

I hope we get no updates soon, because looking at other HTC devices, I think HD2 has got only 1 chance of a big update and it shouldn't be wasted as 6.5.3. They will definetely release an update and the support called it Windows Mobile 7. I hope we get the better version (WP7S) and not the crappy Windows Phone Classic.
I really don't care, I haven't had an official rom on my HD2 since the HSPL was released and that wasn't going to change any time soon.

but remember porting wp7 will be much more harder than porting wm6.5 roms ( no backword comptability ,which means drivers and applications used to operate the device will not be exist (camera ,bluetooth , wifi , radio ,and more ) like the problems happening in porting android to other phones the mentiond apps doesnot work
Sorry, I should have made my viewpoint clearer. From what I have seen and heard of WM7, I'm not that bothered about it anyway. It looks like a step backwards to me, albeit one with lots of eye candy for those that don't look beneath the surface. Microsoft have seen Apple succeed with that viewpoint and want a slice of the action.
I can upgrade to a new phone in 11 months time, I will be happy for my HD2 to have the various cooks of 6.5.x until then.

Sick of the Winmo 7 discussion

Why o why?
The specs are good, so why can't we all get offically the wm7 upgrade?
I know there will be custom roms but no offence to the developpers, they are all ****ty. Every custom rom I had I need to hard reset my device every two weeks so that won't be a option for me anymore.
MICROSOFT PLEASE DON'T BE STUPID!!!!

Specs are good, but hardware requirements are not met by the HD2, now what does that mean, well it means that HTC did not look ahead, and used the wrong button configuration on the phone, so it is outside the spec of what MS says is required for WP7.
So yes we are Officially screwed out of WP7 because of the buttons on our phones .....
I doubt MS is going to change their requirements for the very few existing WinMo phones that have the CPU and RAM to handle WP7.
The hard resetting you have to do every couple weeks may have more to do with WinMo 6.5.x than the fact that it's a custom ROM. I'm sure we'll get near-stock WP7 ROMs that will function much better than what we currently have. Don't lament before we even have anything on that front.
I don't think wp7 will even be a viable option for most of us anyways (at least the initial release). Very locked down, sounds a lot like the first iphone. I'm hoping they update quickly and open it up (at least every 2-3 months), but I wouldn't hold my breath.
That is why I decided to take the plunge with the hd2. Figured it would be a couple of years before I was ready to jump on wp7. (though that 1.5ghz snapdragon htc sounds interesting and apparently is coming to t-mobile...)

The reason I want to have It Is this:
I read that Windows Mobile 6.5 is based on all the old previous versions, based on CE blabla (I don't know It exactly anymore) so there Is alot of old junk that is not needed anymore.
The new Winmo 7 is totally new so therefore It should be allot faster then all the previous versions.
Please tell me If I'm wrong..

For me, tinkering is fun, but that is not the main function of my work device. I want it to work, and work well. If that means giving up a couple features, features which I can live without, then I'll play ball. WP7 has been built from the ground up with a very different goal than Windows Mobile, which had the original goal of bringing the PC to a PDA format. I don't need that, and the functionality that is associated with that goal gets in the way of usability for my purposes. If your use cases do not match up with what WP7 is capable of, so be it, but know that the vast majority of customers aren't tinkerers and tweakers.

"alot of old junk" in WM 6.5? Oh yes - like copy & paste, and proper multitasking? If you think that's junk, you'll love WP7.
iPhone OS v1 was rubbish. v4 finally has most of what you actually need and what WM has had for years. Same with Android - the first versions were severly lacking in many areas. Only now is it coming into it's own at v2.2.
Anyone should be able to see that since it's a completely new OS, WP7 will be equally as rubbish as the iPhone and Android offerings were at initial release.
yes, BUT WM still misses a lot of stuff such as gfx libs for better programs...
like ballmer says... they need to lure Developers Developers Developers somehow...
iPhone is #1 because of apps... WM is last only because of apps... and WM7 is taking sooo long because MS's management SUCKS... they seriously need to hire someone better to get thier mobile dept straightened... look at kin... what it could have been if only those devs were still part of wp7...

Well, yes it is now, did not start out that way, but a discussion is one thing ...
But when people have convinced themselves of something , and just want to argue the point it is no longer a discussion ...
1.) HD2 Specs are great, but HTC did not adhere to What MS has released as specs for WP7, so HTC screwed us out of an Official WP7.
2.) MS specs for WP7 were released(but not to the public) before the HD2 was , so MS is not inclined or obligated to change their specs to fit the HD2
3.) We actually have 1 too many buttons on the HD2 but None of them are the almighty "Search" button, so again the HD2 is outside the spec so no official WP7.

Actually, the Euro version of the HD2 was released before the announcement of WP7. Still, I'm not sure if HTC was made aware of the requirements by the time they were already far along in the design of the HD2.

I had heard about the 3 button some time early last year, but you are right that may have been after the design and during the production phase of the HD2.
MS did not make an Official release of the specs till I think January of this year, I think that is when it was.
Either way , you can blame HTC, you can blame MS, but, it is true for any piece of technology, CPU's that keep changing sockets, Video Cards that keep changing standards, DVD/Blu-Ray standards the list goes, on ...
I mean providers are not going to change what they decide to to with regards to their specs and requirements just because people scream, I mean why can't I run Iphone OS on my HD2(not that I want to ), because it is not compatible, even though the HD2 out powers most Iphones, and just because Apple says NO.
I suggest, instead of getting all up in arms here, and bashing people for their views you contact MS and HTC and complain to them, not that it will get you anywhere, just as posting here is just gonna start a big discussion, but not fix it anyway.

Yes, sorry I meant more like management a while ago... 1 year ago is still much after iPhone released... they should have done something like WP7 from the beginning and if management wasn't an issue, I doubt we would see two different teams for mobile in the first place: Kin and WP7... I do agree however, management is seeming much better now...
EDIT: also, for hardware keys, all we're missing is the search button... since wp7 will have windows button go to the tiles screen which is also the home, we can map the home screen to search (Kind of implying home page aka bing/search)? If they wanted MS could have easily added official support, but i am sure HTC influenced them to do that... since that would mean HD3 sales for them... ahh if only i were rich :-/...

True, and I am sure some of the smart guys here will do just that for our custom WP7 ...

I'm not sure Win Phone 7 will come to HD2

Sorry if this has been done before, unable to search(at work using IE 6.0)
However i'm not sure if Windows Phone 7 will come to the HD2, i'd love it to and i've heard its possible.
But there is one thing which makes me think it would never be done in the same way Android has, and that is Android is open source where as WP7 is closed source and therefore wouldn't it be illegal to port it?
If it can be done legally then I really can't wait to boot my HD2 into WP7 and Android as don't get me wrong, the devs will have no probs porting it if it can be done

truly wise words
Ive been modding my as off with the HD2 and the Galaxy S, cant wait to se what these creative developers can do with the Desire HD.. man its going to be beautiful!
Illegal
I am constantly putting custom roms on my HD2 with Windows Mobile versions that have not been released yet. I don't think that is less illegal than releasing Windows Phone 7.
An official release would be nice of course. Especially because I do not know if we can update WP7 if it ever gets ported to the HD2.
I have heard from several sources that in the development the HD2 has been used a test device and therefore the drivers and so should be available at HTC. The HD7 virtually is equal to the HD2 so a release should be very easy for HTC.
I still have hopes they will release it. Eventually the phone will be worn out and need to be replaced. If HTC has provided me with an update to WP7, my idea of HTC will be so positive that my next phone most probably would be an HTC as well.
If not, well then I hope that WM6.5 gets more and more stable and with cookie hometab 2.0 or SPB windows mobile shell 5.0 we still have a nice interface. I know that the new range of WP7 phones do not offer enough hardware advantages to justify an upgrade while I bought my HD2 for around 550 euro not even a year ago.
A reason why I still count on an official update is that HTC has not been doing much to update the sense experience so far, while on android it keeps getting better and more flexible.
A WP7 release would make up for that, if not, I feel a little bit deserted by HTC.
Also for Microsoft an update would be usefull, they would have an instant increase of marketshare. This is good for app devellopment, mouth to mouth advertising and eventually would help MS to anker their OS into the market.

Well.. If HTC were to release an OFFICIAL update of WinMo7 then people won't buy the HD7..Of course you can also say that if HTC were to update their (not too) old phones they will bring more customers..
I, personally, don't like WinMo7..
It looks too 'simple' for me.. and I don't really like the design.. but we'll have to wait for some reviews and more pics..
lets hope sombdy at HTC just happens to drop da drivers for WP7 on da hands of a couple dev... an goes on wit der life... nody knowin who left em behind
Well if it is illegal just be one of the first to download it ;o
1 - Legal or illegal, I know I don't give a rat's ass about legality.
2 - BE OPTIMISTIC, COTULLA IS JESUS OF CODING.
3 - I sure hope it will come to the HD2
Well I hope someone does port WP7 to the HD2, especially as I've looked at the specs for the HTC HD7 and apart from having build in 8/16gb expanded memory the specs are identical!!! I thought the whole point of WP7 and HTC denying any statement that they would port it back to the HD2 was that the CPU would be a dual core snapdragon (if I understood things right) but seams this is not the case and there is no physical hardware problem with the HD2 running it.
I would guess the thing that will stop it at the moment is getting a Kernel sorted that would boot WP7 just like is needed for Android ROMS to run or a Radio update.
Personally speaking I can't wait to give it a go, the only reason I still run WM6.5 is so I can properly access my work exchange email and hotmail at the same time (+3 other email accounts) and when i'm in the car WM6.5 is perfect for playing music and using sat nav without having to look at the screen (found android audio multi-tasking lacking) but love the android for the customisable scenes, apps, widgets and more importantly, app content (love robo wars and angry birds).
It would be actually better on the HD2 than the HD7; I really really miss having a phone button on WP7 (you have to go back to the home screen, tap the phone icon, then tap the keypad icon...) but guess what? The HD2 already has one! The future is now!
Wp7 seems to have forgotten that some people actually like their phone to also at the same time be a phone (of all things). To be easy to use as a phone. To let you quickly phone people. To not spend five minutes working out how to phone people whilst fumbling on the touch screen on a rainy day. To let you answer phone calls with a (real) button press that your fingers can quickly find whilst pulling it out of your pocket, and (what black magic is this I see) the HD2 even lets you press a button to hang up a call! It's pure genius.
I really like the way an HD2 is built - much more than other phones I've seen - so I'd love to see WP7 on it.
And just to get it off my chest one more time.... Why of why oh why (oh why....) Microsoft did you get rid of the phone button?
well here is an interesting read for you guys (my email responce from htc)...

Windows Mobile 7 is a giant step backwards in 3 key areas
1. No native tethering support. What this means is ooops no connection to the PC like you have now with WinMo 6.5.X
2. No 3rd party app multitasking. What this means is when you get a call and the OS moves away from the app, it gets closed. if the app developer was not smart enough to save the app state, you're screwed.
3. Copy and paste. (This is supposed to be resolved). What this means is you cannot copy urls or text out of something and paste it into another place

1. This won't last long, it will come unless carriers block it.
2. Depends on the 3rd party app. Microsoft has already relented for pandora (apparently). What makes you think the app devs aren't smart enough to develop their apps properly knowing the issue of save state?
3. I've heard this was already fixed (or will be in the first update).
1. MS has stated that they will leave tethering up to the carriers hence it's missing.
2. What makes you think developers are smart enough? I can point to the crapload of buggy software already out for [insert platform here] that does not work right.
3. Should have been in there from the start, there really is no excuse for this most simplistic feature of windows to be missing.

Some things you should concider to think about before flash WP 7

Some things you should concider to think about before flash WP 7 !
This is just some of WP7 dissapointments which I experianced and why to revert back to WM 6.5 :
1. Activation stuff from MS ( I do not wont and do not need to "activate" to somebody my allready expensive HD2 device). As I read on net,Microsoft will have new activation policy in next WP7 phone update,so,nether WP7 modded ROM would not be safe to install.
2. Navigation looks like that children make it..Navigon is far primitive compared to Igo Primo.Lacks and mistakes are everywhere throughout it,very slow, not precise,no way to customise it...etc.etc.
3. Every kind of application has to be signed before any use or installation.
4. Zune software and bunch of unneccessery "addons" which comes in so called "Windows developer tools" to run from PC.You need to install Microsoft Expression,Zune,Microsoft games for marketplace,Microsoft Silverlight,3,4 SDKs,Visual studio Express..etc.etc.etc
5. Lack of easy access to documents,PDFs,files.Device become "Iphon-ised" and very "dummy".So,expensive device become dummy device.
6. Every kind of sync and use needs various hacks and registry modds.
7. Camera images looks like made by cheap 20$ idiot cameras.
8. No support for flash videos in browser. So,no Youtube.
9. Lack of "real" mighty programs....(I presume that it will be partialy fixed as time goes by)
10. No sharing SD cards between devices...
etc...etc...etc...
If you have to add something that I forget, please do and help to other users who are in doubt to flash WP7 or not.
.
yeah, I have something to add.

They promised Chinese IME since they release. Still nothing.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
To be honest, first time I've ran WP7 I thought this is a beta1 version. I haven't seen so many bugs and design flaws in any other mobile OS. It's a shame.
You realize half your complaints have to do with you running WP7 on a non WP7 device?
^^what he said
but i'm still dealing with it and waiting for the next update this Feb like MS announced
I am sure you are a frustrate buyer of an android phone , because i dont understand how the f. you compare a SO with some months in the market with winmo 6.5 or android or iphone who is established in the smartfone market years ago. Did you forget the begins of this " spectacularry " IPHONE or Android phones, and so manny bugs they have ????
Be patient my friend. The igo8 , primo, or sygic. or something gps about you talk have about 3-4 years acomodated in wm, and wm exist a long time ago.
Sorry but you cant see the future my friend .

1. You will have activation issues when you try to run the OS on a non-supported phone. You ventured into it, so you have to deal with it.
2. For a 4 month old platform, WP7 is reasonably stable and bug free. Nothing, compared to the number of issues I had with my iPhone 2G.
3. Isn't that a good thing for a consumer-oriented device?
4. Zune, yes. Windows Dev Tools? NO. You have to deal with it because you want to unlock and sideload apps. That isn't a fault of WP7.
5. What is meant by "easy access"? I had been able to download a 1000+ page PDF doc and open in Adobe reader.
6. NO. Registry is not for you. If it was, MS would have built in a registry editor in WP7.
7. The pics I clicked were no different than the ones I clicked with Android. Yes, the shutter sound is irritating.
8. There is a YouTube app. No, two. One from HTC too.
9. I presume that it would be "fully" fixed as time goes by.
10. How many times would you want to use a $10 SD card in shared mode?
was going to write all that ^^ said but i dont think i could have done it any better.
You sound very bitter for someone trying to use software you dont have permission to use on a device that is unsupported, you clearly havent used the device much anyway and by the sounds of it you havent done very well with "cracking" it either because youtube is available on the marketplace or im sure if you look hard enough you will find some XAPs, is it Microsofts fault that you cant read instructions on some random website detailing step by step how to get this on your OLD HD2?
Please calm down take a brake and rename this thread because it is infact YOU that is creating confusion to people that might buy this OS.
Windows Phone 7 has had some storm of Missinformation and bad PR based on untruths and incompertance, you are feeding this with this utter nonsense

Agreed.
WP7 is VERY good for the first release of a new OS. I was seriously amazed by it. Can't wait for updates with multitasking and new features, and for when the homebrew community delves deeper in and we figure out more ways of customizing it.
Virtually all "lacks" of WP7 were officially known from the very beginning.
A disappointment is nothing else but a logical consequence if you start trying the new OS if you think it should have been "perfect" from scratch.
There are quite a few buyers of native WP7 devices with the same attitude, that´s something I completely don´t understand.
Considering the flawless port of WP7 to HD2, my first thoughts after installing WP7 were quite different: I never had any first release (of whatever OS on any smartphone I ever owned) which was even close to the smoothness and bugless functionality of WP7 on HD2. Yes, the camera app function is crappy, but then again, there is already an alternative solution from the devs.
We should be happy that thanks to devs, it was (and is) possible to run a trial on our current hardware for free - there is no other device on the market which has the power to offer the same.
I guess quite a few users will go for a native WP7 device sometime in the future, others will decide for Android, or iOS, whatever. But the good thing is, you can do it having had the chance to test over weeks or months.
And that´s the good thing about HD2: It will be my electronic companion for quite a few more months, most probably for a total of 2 years. No other smartphone was good for me for so much time ever before. My guess is that for the rest of the time, I will be doing more trials with Android and WP7, while WM 6.5 is a nice fallback solution.
Oh, and btw, Navigon Select runs nicely here. It is a basic version. The full one will only come during this summer, I was told by them.
Buy a supported device then come back and rewrite this post.

Yes,and I realise that HD2 is faster on WP7 than HD7
I think MS did a really good job with WP7.
Just think about how iOS and Android behaved first year on the market ?!?
I´m a strong beliver of Android (even a mod on forums), but WP7 really is interesting

But it doesn't run as good on the HD2... touchscreen doesn't work as well on hd2. Once the registry is known more and native devices start getting custom roms, it'll probably run faster on native phones.

that's such a weak argument, is virtually the same thing.
I have not experienced anything on my HD2 that an HD7 wouldn't do exactly the same except at times multi-touch goes weird. Any of the custom ROMs have most issues solved and have the registry edits cooked in, so all you have to do is flash and enter your activation code, just as if you hard-reset a native WP7 device.
WP7 is nice and smooth and I like it and I'm very happy to be able to use it on my phone, but till Mango drops it does have some issues that are OS-wide that prevent me from using it as a total daily without booting into Android from SD at times. That's not a knock though, I'm amazed MS put together a product like this for a first release. After the Mango update we will have more apps, more games, more custom ROMs with probably ability to totally change the UI if we want.
and @ OPs opinion that:
Activation stuff from MS ( I do not wont and do not need to "activate" to somebody my allready expensive HD2 device). As I read on net,Microsoft will have new activation policy in next WP7 phone update,so,nether WP7 modded ROM would not be safe to install.

what the hell does that even mean? you provide no evidence to this, just some nebulous claim that you "read on net." We all have activation keys and MS has no idea who has an HD7 or an HD2, so it's not like they can just stop allowing access to the Marketplace. They have been totally cool about giving us keys, but for some arbitrary reason will change that after an update? The HD2 crowd are buying apps and hyping up the OS, with seemingly no security issues at all, I haven't seen any pirated apps...
most of the OP's points are pretty worthless and flashing any of the custom ROMs eliminate any reg hacks or unlocking or anything.

Completley agree, I was going to reply to OP and rip apart everything he has ignorantly moeaned abo9ut but everything has pretty much been said already.
I must admit im a firm follower of WM6.5 and i was very reluctant to change to WM7. Ive had WM7 on my HD2 now for 2 weeks and im really starting to get into it alot more. Now that i have activated marketplace with Microsoft (which by the way was an absolute piece of piss) ive got pretty much all the apps that i used on WM6.5 apart from my Garmin XT which i miss, but im sure someone in the coming months will sort it out. You should re-flash it back to your phone, Activate it and get used to syncing with Zune. You will get into it fella. Its mint.
