I was removing some of the stock apps (Nascar and the like) and now my sd card is write protected. How do I reverse that? Thanks.

Did you make sure that it's not mounted on your computer?
I unmounted, pulled the card and popped it into my comp to transfer some backgrounds to the card and it said it was write protected.

My mini sd card isn't being seen by my phone. I plug it in and go to file explorer but I can never get to it. It appeared once but disappeared. It's only 512mb too. =(
Bump for the same issue. I'm on Core's 2.0 ROM using 1GB Kingston Micro SD w/a miniSD adapter.
My computer can read the card but the phone can't.

Try reformatting it on the pc - i prefer fat32 but try fat16 if that does not work.
Did you format the card with your computer? I had that problem with my card and had to find a way to remove the formatting that the computer did. I found the answer to my problem on the Cingular website.
Insert your card into your card reader. Right click "My Computer" and click on "Manage". Then left click "Disk Management", find your card and delete the partition. At this point, you can then stick the card into the phone and it will ask if you would like to format the card. Even though the computer will not recognize the card, your phone will.
I don't know the circumstances of what caused the problem, but if you did what I did, then the above helped me salvage a perfectly good (and new) miniSD card.

Similar to what i have done to resurrect some cards when all seems lost.
Goto control panel - administrative tools - computer management - disk management.
Now attach card to pc via card reader or wm5torage and with luck it will appear on the list of drives - now format or do as curious d described.

I stuck it in my phone first then I decided to put files on it. There was a temp folder on it (presumably from the phone, so I'm guessing it read on its first attempt). Then I deleted the temp folder (probably shouldn't have) and put my files on it. After that my phone wouldn't read it any more. The computer could and my old SX66 could as well.
I opened disk management and it won't let me delete the partition. Partition Magic won't either because I'm guessing it doesn't see removable drives. I formatted it again and I'm still out of luck.
Thanks for the tips guys.
I've got a Kingston 2GB microSD in a miniSD adapter. At first, it would not recognize it at all...after many insertions/resets/powering off&on. Took the advice to reformat it to FAT32 on my PC then reinserted it. Still no go. Soft resetted it and bingo, it worked. I then removed it to transfer my files from my 1GB miniSD, reinserted and then it wouldn't see it. Removed, reinserted. Still no go. After soft-reset, it finally worked.
I know that my phone does have an issue with recognizing an inserted miniSD...sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't. Usually by inserting it firmly it would work. But maybe the microSD makes it even more flaky.
In short, I think the FAT32 format and the soft-reset makes it work...presuming you can get your phone to physically recognize it.
Inserted my 8GB SD card and the phone isn't reading it. It did then I did a format and now it's not reading it.
Any suggestions? Thanks

Wait, so let me get this straight...
Obviously... as you stated, the storage card wasn't being read by your device prior to your decision to format it, correct?
So, why the unnecessary formatting then...? Be sure that your SD CARD is able to be detected on a desktop PC or laptop. If so, check the SD CARD original format. Make sure it's FAT32. And did you format your card via Apple or a standard PC?
It was working fine on my previous phone. It had few stuff on it so I decided to format it. Then after the format HD2 won't read it. When I plug in the phone it to the computer it would usually read the media card, but in this case it doesn't.
Ok I happened to figure it out. I end up doing a format on the phone and that brought my SD card back to life.
stop reading my sd card
I am too facing the same problem, I have installed the total commander on my sd card and all of a sudden my card top reading.i restart the system and then got the message to format the card in order to read it. i did but still card was not reading. i inserted the card in my pc but still the card was not reading. i bring my hd2 to factory settings and then also not reading the card. then i again format the card but of no use. any help from anyone.

SD cards are notorious for being "wiped" by mishandling them. If I had a dollar for every SD card I lost because I removed it from a PC without ejecting it first, I'd have enough for a Happy Meal at least.
It looks like your install of Total Commander wiped your card. If you have a way of testing it, check to see if it says "0b available". If so, it's junk.
These cards allow unlimited reads, but only about 1,000 writes to a block. They purposefully design them to hide blocks until one goes bad, then a new one comes up, but that is a limited "fix". Not sure I understand it all myself.
This is one reason why it is a bad idea to install a program to the SD card. As the program runs, it may write runtime data to the card, things like logs and such, this reduces the lifetime of the card drastically.
Is there any known fix for this? I've been searching over the forums, but no definitive answer. It was working before, it had some sync program installed on it?? (it came with it when i bought it).
I reformat the card and now it doesn't show up on the phone. I'm trying to get in contact with the original owner and hopefully he has a fix.

When you say you reformatted the card, what was the method you used?
What file system did you use when you formatted the card?
What size card is it?
Did you add any partitions to the card?
Can you add/remove files from the card when you have it plugged into a Windows PC?
Can you "see" the card when you have it inserted into the phone without the phone being connected to the PC?
Morning good people.
Just got a nice sim free Wildfire for my daughter and I'm trying to install a few apps.
I've got Astro installed but when I try to access the SD card from it it says there's nothing on the card even through when I view it from the pc (either as mounting the phone as a drive or just putting the card in the reader) I can see the dir's and files ?
I've tried formatting the card as fat and fat 32 and I've tried 2 cards, nothing.
The Wildfire can write to the cards as its creating .footprints and LOST.DIR when it's given a new card. Also when I going in to settings/SD phone storage both unmount and format are greyed out.
Am I missing something here ? or is there a problem with the phone ??
Thanks...

Is your home directory(In settings) set to "/sdcard"?
Also try another filemanager for reference.
I highly doubt that there is something physically wrong with the phone.

Yes, home is set to /sdcard.
I've tried 2 other file managers. Just the same issue. They say they see the card(s) but report nothing on them !
Did you try rebooting the phone or Hard resetting it?

ok, will get to it when i back home, now at office which uses vista.
Just reboot the phone, it always work for me.
Unmount the sd card from settings, turn off your phone, take out the battery and sd card then put them all back, turn on. It works for me
Alternatively you can try a media card reader and copy all the data off it. It may or may not work depending how damaged it is. If it is damaged that is.
You should make sure the card is unmounted before you turn off USB connectivity. That can cause this.
It will try to repair it however, somtimes it is unsuccessful.
Just take mine as the last option you can think.
Get some partition stuff, Acronis DiskDirector works well, I used a lot with damaged server harddisk.
Just DELETE it. (not wipe!)
and Recover it. If it was about master record fails which it's likely, it should be recovered in a few sec.
If it still not work, then grab some undelete, file recovery to recover your remaining stuff. I don't suggest it anyway though someone claim that it worked well, since those raw-based recovery only work with some general file. (doc, excel, blah blah)
Hello,
I recently tried to flash the Epic Sense ROM and it screwed up my SD Card, it wouldn't install system files and I was waiting over an hour. I pulled the battery out and ever since then, I wasn't able to paste any files to it because there was no paste option. I decided to format, but I was not able to because it said that the card was write-protected. I even made sure that the switch on the side was unlocked. I tried using CWM to format, but no luck. Is there anyway I can fix this?
Thanks
I have also tried the manage computer and tried to format using that, but the format option was greyed out I wish someone could help me fix this.
i went through this but it was cuz the switch was on lock
have you tried to format it through the phone?

It won't format through phone, it says cannot delete folder whenever I try. I used ESFileExplorer and Astro, I even tried the CWM formatter, but no luck. Does anyone know how I can format the card or make it readable again?
Thanks

Did you try pulling SD card, put it directly in PC, save everything to PC, format card, then put SD back in phone and format. Then put whet you want back on SD from your PC

Yeah, I tried formatting on PC, says write protected. I can only copy the files, and then I tried putting it on the phone and formatting, but it just makes me wait when I use CWM and then says its done, but nothing happens. When I use esFile Explorer, it just says that the files cannot be deleted.
If you have a way to try another computer, card reader, and Micro to mini adapter that might work.
Also, you might try this format utility written specifically for SD cards at the bottom of this page:
https://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter_3/
It's also possible that your card was damaged by the flash or battery pull. At least 16 gb cards are pretty cheap these days.
I tried the formatter, said the card was write protected.
Any other options? or should I start searching for a micro sd card?

I know you said you had the switch on the adapter in the unlock position, but I've had adapters who's switches were so loose that just inserting them in the reader slid the switch back to lock. Make sure that's not happening too. (unlock or writable is forward, towards the contacts. write protect is towards the end of the adapter that sticks out)

I'm out of ideas. A quick search on google doesn't bring up any software solutions either. Sorry.
sounds like its messed up i guess
to be clear, you went into Settings> SD Card> Format on the phone and it didnt work?
i agree with the other guy. atleast 16gb is pretty cheap these days lol
I've had this issue in the past. This is what I do.
Put it in a full size SD adapter and push the lock switch to lock.
Plug it into my laptop via either a built in SD card slot or a USB card reader (depending on which laptop I have in front of me.)
try to delete a file (it should tell me it's locked)
eject the card by right clicking on the drive and choosing eject
flip the lock switch back to unlocked
Plug it into my laptop via either a built in SD card slot or a USB card reader
try to delete a file
It usually lets me at that point and then I can format it via the phone. I did have one instance where I was never able to get it out of locked mode and I had to buy a replacement.
Good luck.
I have the same issue right now and i've been using an sd adapter and my laptop's reader all the time.
I coppied all my files on a folder and i'm doing a format right now (not quick)... :fingers-crossed:
Have you tried a pc with Linux or a Mac? I'm pretty sure that'll work!
I' ve fixed it but later on it got me the same msg again... So i had to transfer my files from my Mac. But i' ve found out that the transfer from recovery is working even if i can't transfer via the card reader of my laptop...
