Telus HTC touch/Elf GPS trouble

With the new Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade is available for the Telus HTC touch, we can now have access to the GPS function. Witch is great. The only problem, I kneed to use the Telus Navigator program in order for my GPS to work.
Other program will work but only after enabling the GPS by starting Telus Navigator.
The 2 other program I'm trying to configure are : Google maps and GPS Tuner.
Both work, but not before I turn on the Telus GPS program, even if I set the port manually.
Is there any buddy els with that same problem ?

I have the HTC Touch from Telus (wich is the Vogue by the way, not the Elf, that's the GSM version ( from Rogers))
I have acces to my GPS from Google maps without having to open Telus Navigator or any other software. You just have to make sure you have a data session active. Just move the map in google around so it will connect the data and you should be good to go!
Also, of course, make sure you have checked the "use GPS" function!
Oh! Remember that the phone needs to see the sky to detect satellites! It won't work well inside...

I spent two days searching post on finding a way to make it work. For a reason I dont know, I could not activate my GPS without the Telus navigator. And it seams I'm not the only one.
The best way I found is true GPS gate. A software the activate your GPS port. Then I could use any GPS program I installed.
Still trying out a programs to find the best one that suites me tho !

TF3D 2.1 'my location' weather not displaying location

Dear forum users,
I'm a happy user WM6.5 with TF3D 2.1. The weather at my location is updated nicely, however there's 1 issue I don't understand:
When I look at my home screen it still says 'My Location' instead of the city name where I live in (Ho Chi Minh city)...this is different from many screenshot I've seen on this forum where weather forecast city names are displayed nicely on home screen.
does anyone have an idea how I could fix this?

I'm having exactly the same problem. The weather tab just stays at 'My location', as does the home tab. I've manually added the city I live in to display the weather, but I'd like to know how to get the phone to automatically detect it. Any help?

I had this problem too and tried lots of fixes I read about here and none of them worked. Then I tried going into my phone settings and changing my phone from "auto" in the Network field to "manual" and then selecting T-Mobile. I'm thinking it was finding AT&T and not being able to determine my location.
Settings>Personal>Phone>Network>Network Selection
After doing this and restarting the phone (airplane mode on/off) it detected "My Location" on the weather tab and then on the clock. I'm in SW Florida and am new to T-mo so i don't know if this will have any undesirable effects.
Not sure if this will affect my roaming, but I don't really roam much so I should be ok. See if it works for you guys.

Could you tell me how to add city manually? My city is not listed in weather list of my phone. I have att, touch2 came from tmo unlock. When I try to update, it said something about not able to connect to dns and web2go.

Can't get My Location to work...

Did you guys try my tip of manually selecting your mobile carrier in settings>phone>network and set it to manual and then select your carrier? I tried everything before this, and it's worked on every ROM I tried it on.
You can always set it back to automatic if it doesn't work or impacts your roaming.
I'm just curious if others see this fix working, then maybe we can collectively figure out why it's happening to us (is it location, carriers, ROM versions, etc.)

manually selecting the carrier didn't work for me.
But I read somewhere else that it could work when you enable Wifi.
Doesn't need to be connected, just enabling should do the trick.
And it worked for me!

I tried the wifi trick and it didn't work for me. All my testing was done at my house with only my wifi in range (I live in the country) and it didn't matter if I was using it or not - no MyLocation data until I manually selected T-Mobile.
I'm on T-Mobile in Cape Coral FL - are you on Tmo too? Did you try driving around to pick up different cell towers? As I said all my testing has been at hoime, so not a lot of "variety" in what it could pick up over the air.

I am on T-Mobile, but it's over here in Germany...
I didn't try different cell towers.
Looks like you have to try both, when encoutering the problem.
Is anyone here who tried both and it still didn't work?

i tried all of your suggestions but nothing helped it worked one time but since then ...

Gotta say i've only ever had it working once, and even then it was very inaccurate (brought up somewhere about 20 miles away).
I've tried every radio, manual network selection, turning 3g off, i also had to add my own town into the database and nothing works.
Using google maps with wifi, 3g, grps it finds my location to with in 500 metres, with gps it's spot on, so i know that aspect of it works.
However using the weather my location, it rotates between 3 different locations (One is about 1 mile away and the other 2 are about 5 miles away). It'll bring up the name, but always gives me the "There was a connection error while attempting to download weather data. Retry?" message.
so i'm at a loss as to how to get this working.

My location is working for me, i'm using the tmob radio(not the one in my sig but it worked with that one too) its showing a village about a mile from me, and the same on my wifes Hero-Stock ROM. all ive done is load latest Google maps and wait for it to find my location then exit, go to weather tab and select download weather automatically then back, a screen appears to accept google data download, accept then it works,
it seems my location is only as accurate as google maps as it uses the tower positions around you to triangulate you approximate position, when i'm in a town or city it shows that place. i dunno what else to suggest changing my radio helped. i'm not using 3g, maybe that helps?

Sorry i can't help any further..its weird, i'm running At0ms 3.7 but i'm sure it also worked for me on previous builds,
i think on earlier builds i had to also switch data connection on in comms so it stays on - Actually i think this might be be key as i think My Location has trouble calling the data connection which is where your error message is coming from. i hope it works for you.
As you're on Vodafone you could try this reg setting for Agps i don't think it will make any difference but it may do..if nothing else there good settings!

yeah it worked on fusion 3.5 but hasn't worked for me on any other rom.
TVM for the reg settings, i'll give them a whirl.

I've tried everything listed here and am unsuccessful on TF2D 2.5.
Does anyone have the original 2330fc3c_manila file they can upload from 2.5?

I a running shadowline's 23064 build with 2.5.19133431. I was unable to get the location stuff working as well. I turned on all the location settings through SenseUI, but no go. I enabled Assisted GPS through Advanced Config (not sure if that is relevant). Still no go. I allowed my phone to connect up to my home WiFi, and instantly, it recognized my location as Seattle.
Not sure if it will work for others, but it worked for me.

That worked for me at my home in Germany.
Now I am in Italy on holidays.
Same infrastructure here. Working WiFi, too.
But it doesn't do the trick here.
My phone still thinks my location is Germany and any updates just fail.
Think, I am giving up with this build.

My Location working on Edge (E) only, not 3G (H)

I've been scouring the forums for a while now, trying to figure out why all of a sudden My Location has stopped working. Unfortunately, nothing helped.
We've been told to have the current RADIO ROM that conincides with the COOKED ROM... we've even been told of the rudimentary workaround: set your location manually. Thing is, not all of us are from a big enough city to be featured in the database. Also, editing the database is a pain in the butt. We just want things to work right out the box.
So moving on...
I did a lot of ROM/RADIO ROM flashing today to find out what the problem was. I even tried a hunch and downgraded my Google Maps, but to no avail. However, my final effort worked... I went to the Comm Manager & turned off 3G (H), my phone went to EDGE (E) and now it's working flawlessly.
Hopefully this helps out future ROM chefs.
P.S. I'd like to add that I did go back to the stock TMOUS 6.1 and My Location worked exactly as if the phone had just come out of the box. Which leads me to believe that it may have something to do with non-US ROMs and the whole 3G/H frequency thing.
Also, when using certain ROMS, sometimes My Location updated utilizing WiFi/ActiveSync.
I'm currently using "Rhodium_AF manila 2.5_R1_TMOUS" ROM in EDGE mode to get My Location to work consistently.

I am using the htc europe 6.5 rom and i get location with 3g. Using the newest version of google maps. No issues with that rom.

Initially, I used the same ROM as well and one day My Location simply stopped working.

A-Gps Question

I was just wondering what it is, as my orange rom had it before i unlocked and de-branded, is it usefull to me as my gps seems to be working fine without it. even when i had it it wroked better when it was disabled i think.
anyone know ?

before i debranded my orange branded jade, i had 2 options relating to gps, one was QuickGPS , thats still in the branded rom.
in the orange rom it had QuickGPS and another setting called A-GPS, just wondered what the second one was for as its not in the offical htc rom

As I have understood HTC pages :
"Quick GPS for Pocket PC from the HTC Corporation is included in the Windows Mobile 6 cusom build. Quick GPS can speed up the amount of time for determining a users GPS position by downloading the latest satellite information via an Internet Connection (such as GPRS, ActiveSync, etc). Quick GPS is intended for use in conjunction with Telenav but will provide the same experience if a customer is using another GPS Solution. "
And Wiki concerning A-GPS:
"An A-GPS system can address these problems in several ways, using an assistance server or other data from a network".
Quick GPS = A-GPS since both use the same principle i.e. downloading info about satellites via internet through GPRS, Wi-Fi if available etc.

For what I understand, Quick GPS uses general satellite tables, which are downloaded every week.
The a-gps is more precise : you download the satellite tables which are calculated for the BTS (radio antenna) you are connected to, so it is very precise. It's quite impressive: wherever I am, I am able to get a cold fix in 10 to 15 seconds..

i think you should start by creating a new thread in the right section
could be a problem with the radio rom or a hardware problem

never noticed this reply last time i checked , where is my head lol
that sounds about right, as a-gps never used the data connection and in my case (on o2-uk using a orange rom on a orange branded device) it would make sense that the a-gps data would of been avalible on the orange network and not on o2, and thats why i could not get a fix with it enabled

As stated 'Newbie', I have just started to learn about modds/roms .... etc
My first attempt turned my Apache in to a 'brick'
I have started on my Vogue and upgraded to WM6.1 which was an update from Telecom nz.
I also upgraded the radio to Bell 3.42.50 for gps purposes as I was told that was the one to use.
What else do I need to do to utilise the gps, also if anyone knows where I can source nz maps to add.
My next attempt will be to upgrade to WM6.5 ..... but I still need to read more and gather the appropriate cab files for the process.
The main purpose was to upgrade and to initiate the gps capabilities of the phone.
The cdma network here in Aoteaoa(nz) will be terminated by Telecom nz by 2012.
So once the cdma network is terminated can the gps still work or not, can the phone be switched to gsm?

No you cannot switch to GSM because assuming you have the cdma version there is no GSM chip.
I have no experience with GPS(never use it)
I would assume so because GPS should work independently of the cellular network if it works via satellite but like I said I dont use it

you can get the garmin que program from the garmin web site and use maps from nzopengps.org.
use the below site for setup and use the nzopengps maps instead of the malaysian ones

As stated above, you cannot run a CDMA phone in a GSM network since the hardware is different (you cannot put a SIM card in the phone).
There are a bunch of good GPS programs out there (TomTom, Navigon, iGo, GoogleMaps, Bing, etc). You have to try and see which one you will like best, that is all.

true, i'm sure they are all good but the benefit of the garmin program is that in NZ we get free map updates from nzopengps.org which is community developed. also it is fully auto routing.

Will try this on my other Vogue phone(this is the phone I use to test apps/software before I use it on my main Vogue), I have iGO8 running on my Vogue at the moment but does anyone know how to change the resolution?. The actual iGO8 Res is too oversized for the Vogue
