Part Exchange of 16 key htc touch dual with a 20 key QWERTY one. - Touch Dual, MDA Touch Plus General

Hi there...
Is any one interested in part exchanging my HTC Touch dual (16-key keypad) with a 20-key QWERTY keyboard version??
Nixu

maybe this helps,
link
It only costs 7 dollar

hey soulcrusher,
Thanks for the link, but I am not sure that if i manage to replace the key pad only, the system automatically changes to handle the 20key keypad .
I have my doubts.
nixu

It (most likely) doesn't automatically changes the handling but it can be changed with a few registry changes. My 16-key dual sometimes has a bug wich makes it to handle like a 20 key version, so you (should) be able to combine any version of dual with any rom.
The two keypads are interchangeable. With the 16 key version, the 4 buttons on the right and left side actually have 2 connectors but they only use the inner ones because the other ones are for the 20 key version

Hi Sorry for the n00b questions but does the 16 key tocuh dual have the 20 key keypad undeneath or do you need to replace the electronics part too?
Raptor

hi, did somebody manage to successfully replace the 16-key hardware with the 20-key or viceversa? I'd like to replace the 20-keyboard with the 16-key on my German Xda Star but I have the same reservasions as raptor-damon.
thx

No it doesnt, and no you dont have to replace any electronic parts

So you can't just replace the keyboard to change from 16 to 20 key then?

I think so, I dont know if the part is soldered on but i think its just a flexcable

change
Sorry for my english
Im would like change my 20 keypad for a 16 keypad , key of registry to change?

Dont know;(
But I found out the layout of the 16 key version is different than the 20 key version so you need to buy the whole keypad itself with the reflex cable and stuff

I have already bought the keypad face from:
http://cnn.cn/shop/touch-dual-keypad-p-2385.html.
But when i opened the phone I found out that I need to change the hardware that has 16 key pressure sensors with a 20 key version...
Any idea from where I can buy one??

change to keyboard with diferente button positions

Hello, i'm waiting from ebay an keyboard for qtek 9000(in this case, T-mobile MDA) and it was a qwertz layout.
the question is, if I change the original keyboard to a new keyboard with diferente button positions such as Ok button, video call button and others, will pda recognize the diference and atribute right function to each button?
url for new keyboard from ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Keypad-Keyboard...yZ150774QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Tanks a lot!!!
Seriously?
No it will not. the picture shows just a QWERT keypad with no electronics so it will not re-map anything (read: it will function exactly as the old keyboard)
remap via software
but how can i do that, which software will i use?
Tanks!
can i change sym.xxxx.txt file and fix ok, start, video call...blablabla buttons?
tanks for help!
I suppose you must find the correct language code for the keyboard, nothing else.
Someone cofirm?
PLEASE????
i don't now if i install imate rom, will solve the problem?
DESPERATED.........
Hell, the keyboard is compatible all most in every button, but wen I install it, after disassemble universal...the original space button was 1 contact, and this new one was 2 contacts.so, the new space button of new keyboard is not campatible....You can see in link, on the back side os keyboard!
At least, housing for universal of the same seller is very, very good!!!

Is there a way that the 40 key keyboard can replace the 12 HTC Touch?

I just installed the Google Search Today plug in the other day, and what's nice about is that when you click on it, it comes up with this rarely seen 40 key QWERTY keyboard that makes typing way easier than that other microscopic keyboard we usually have to use to enter passwords and stuff where the 20 key keyboard can't be used.
I saw someone created a reg hack that enabled the 40 keyboard ALL the time, but isn't there a way that it could just replace the 12 key keyboard (which I find totally useless), so that when you click on the 12 key, the 40 key will show up and actually work for passwords and such?
I find it extremely annoying having to fiddle with the other standard keyboard for passwords...that's the time where you really don't want to mess up, and that's when they present you with this tiny piece of crap where you almost have to whip out the stylus unless you have little asian girl fingers!
Thanks!

New keyboard
Hi
I understand your problem. My o2 uk version of the wizard (XDA Mini S) for some reason has different layout of symbols, so in any rom apart from the original wm5 one all the symbols are in the wrong place. My wizard is in a fairly battered condition (bought for £26 on ebay) and I considered replacing the casing and found on ebay (item 270284727220) for $38.99 a full housing including keyboard with close inspection of photos, a Standard layout!
I haven't got around to ordering one yet (they seem to have plenty) but if you're brave enough to get your screwdriver out and change the keyboard and maybe casing too, you'll have a nice shiny looking wizard with all the buttons in the right place! This may seem an extreme measure but it's up to you. It is a SUGGESTION if you don't follow the tutorials available online for opening your wizard and/or you break it I WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE.

[Q] DZ from HK, hardware keyboard symbol layout not match with Software???

Dear follow DZ owner:
Just bought my DZ today, and disappointed to find a hardware problem.
1. the "printing" of the symbol on the hardware keyboard doesn't match with the soft keyboard, this creates a lot of trouble for the user who get used to the standard HTC layout. e.g. # is on S key and $ is on D key while on soft keyboard @ is on S and # is on D
2. the strange thing is the symbol output from the hardware keyboard IS indeed still based on the soft keyboard layout, which means what you type on the hardware keyboard is NOT what you get from output on the screen.
e.g. printing of the # is on the S key, however output generates by long press S is @ and the worst is output by pressing FN + S gives #.
I didn't see anyone discussing this issue. Am I the only one that is bug by this problem/issue???
In your second picture, it shows that your on-screen keyboard is the English keyboard ("EN"). Press the soft key towards bottom left and you should be able to select different languages, is there one that matches better in that list ?

Sorry, what I was trying to point out is that, when a key combine with FN its output is not the same as long press on a key.
Will remapping keys help fix this problem?
I'm also using HK version, but I don't use the built-in IME since I type in PinYin普通话拼音, didn't notice that issue.
If you wanna have a look at the key-mapping, go
/system/usr/keylayout/vision-keypad-hk.kl

pull it to your computer and open it with text editor, notepad or UltraEdit etc.
The reason its like this is simple.
The hardware keyboard has its own design, made to make our use easier (according to the guys at HTC), however this keyboard still runs on the SAME software used to run the on screen touch keyboard this is why when you do things like long press you still get certain behaviours of the touch keyboard.
You will either need to remap, or just simply get used to the new layout, it will happen over time.
@OP: your key map doesn't match your physical keyboard.
@Lennyuk: No.

That's the whole point, the stupid HTC guy think the new key layout will help the user. The truth is they are re inventing the wheel.

[Q] Can I change software & hardware keyboard?

Hello,
after 5 years my Wizard is died so I diceded to buy a new one!
I found a very cheap QWERTZ but I need a QWERTY keyboard (as mine is) so, if I buy it, I have to change the registry keys... But what will happen after that? If I'll type "Z" on the keyboard it will write "Y" on the screen?
If yes, do you think I can swap the two hardware keyboards to allign software and hardware?
Thanks
Hi, i dont know about registry, but if you buy new hardware jeyboard, youll need plastic keyboard that youre tiping on. I have changed inner keynoard but not the plastic im tiping and i have got wrong all. Mine was qwertz but now is qwerty. Greetings from Serbia!!
Hi, I have changed the keyboard of my wiza (just the plastic keys) from Qwerty to Qwertz, if you want to have QWERTY on your new Wiza, just disarms your old phone and take the Keyboard to the new one, it most work right with an English rom =)
Good Luck!!
