If you hate your universal or if you wanna buy one... - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

If you hate it :
I've bought myself a NOKIA E61 few days ago and I can say : no Windows Mobile powered phone, including Universal, is even in the same league as E61!!!
If you're fed up with a size and weight of an universal, if you want a RELIABLE and excellent working 3G/Wi-Fi enabled smartphone then look no further.
I was using Windows powered PDA/Phones and smartphones for last few years and now I still can't get used to not having to soft reset my phone AT ALL, that the battery lasts THREE DAYS, that it doesn't hangs up with no reason, that IT JUST WORKS the way it should with brilliant reception and call sound quality.

Wait few more days or weeks and You ll see how reliable E61 is. My friend bought it few months ago and he have problems with it - mainly with not answered calls and signal drops during conversations. I ve checked many different mobile platforms - standard Symbian, UIQ, pocket pc and palmos treos.
All of them have their own problems. And I always considered windows as the most unstable platform but it really turns out theres no difference. Even few days ago We spoke with my friend about his nokia comm. 9500 and problems he have with this phone.
Seriously - I think those devices are too complicated for now to be absolutely flawless. Such a geeks like us can play with them, upgrade rom countless times etc . but if You need something strud buy normal, simple phone.
In fact I am also tired of endless small problems in my Universal and I am considering to exchange it with IE Motorola K1. Of course I am not completly out of mind and want to buy additionall Fujitsu P1610 as a "neccesarry" addition.
Best regards,
Piotr

I like Symbian phones, but as phones, for PDA devices you still can't beat Windows Mobile.
It's comparing a bicycle to a car, yes, for short distances, they are both good, and in city areas a bike will get you there faster and cheaper, but there are some things you just can't, or at least wouldn't want to do on a bike.
Every device has it's place, if you're so happy with the E61, I would suggest you were using the wrong device for your needs for a long time, rather than the PocketPC's not being very good.

Well said that man!

Nokia E61 would have been awesome if it had touch screen.

how true... how true... I've had an HP h6315, and now an iMate JasJar... Ever since the HP, I can't get along with an "untouchable" screen! I even put my fingers on my friends Sony Ericssons' screen before I say "sorry for the fingerprint, man, I though I was a touchscreen" ;-)
The Nokie 6270 is pretty good, especially with its VGA camcording @ 30FPS with digital zoom! Wish it was more "PC-like" and "touchable" ;-)

How do I replace my lost JasJar?

Well, I'm officially an idiot....I left my JJ on the Eurostar on Sunday. And some lucky train sanitation agent has obviously seen it as a good opportunity to make a couple of quid (despite the offer of a reward )
Fortunately, apart from a couple of photos of Paris everything was backed up. I've managed to remote wipe it (Thanks to AKU2), and IIWPO is installed in the ROM (Thanks to XDA-Dev!!) so I'm waiting to see if my wife gets a text message that I can follow up on....
For now though, I've been relegated to using my trusty Tornado. (Although I keep finding myself prodding at the screen with a pencil in a vain attempt to recreate the happy days of PPC ownership....)
Anyway, my question is this:
I found the Universal to be pretty bulky. Not too bad, but I'd prefer something a bit smaller. My choices as I see them are:
1) Get a replacement Universal now and put up with the size.
2) Get a Fujitsu Siemens T830 in July and put up with a puny screen.
3) The HTC Hermes - pretty much exactly what I'm after, but God only knows how long I'll have to wait...and I'm impatient!
Any other sensible suggestions would be very welcome. Are there any other Universal replacements on the horizon that I may have missed?
Thanks!
I think I'm jumping ship to the Mio A701 tomorrow I want more toys (GPS), and can live without keyboard.
Hermes still seems an incremental improvement to me. Nice idea, but not quite what I'm after. And I think it looks a bit poo...
But then, I've still got my Universal, Magician and P900
V
I did consider the Mio. it looks nice and more toys are always good, but I use a lot of 'connected' functions so the lack of WiFi or 3G kills it for me. Looking at that device that led me to finding the T830...
If only the screen of the T830 wasn't so rubbish, I think this would be a no-brainer, but as it is I may stick with a Universal variant (and it's bulk) until something better comes along.
And the Hermes is pretty ugly, It's only a consideration over the T830 because (again) of the better screen. I think I've just been spoiled by the VGA lovliness of my dear departed JasJar, so I don't want to downgrade too far...
Fuji looks very nice. But screen is 240x240? Sigh...
I don't use my Universal much, but I really want a proper handheld with VGA. I'd go blind (it's hard enough to see on the Universal), but 240x240 is bad
Wifi isn't so bad for me, I've got a wifi card. 3G - useful, but I don't use it in the UK really. Does the Benq have a qvga screen? It's old skool, but if screen space is a priority...

Well if i were you i would stuck with the universal, because there isn't another similar phone/pocket pc with the same specs and a VGA screen ! I bought one because it was the only one with the darn VGA screen !!
It only the Atom had a VGA screen... ohh well !!!
You want VGA Screen?

He probably also wants something he can actually buy.
I'll be able to live without a VGA screen. Just not sure I want to go as lo-fi as 240x240. Mainly because of software compatibility problems...WM5 has precious little decent software already, without complicating matters further.
If the T830 was QVGA it'd be perfect (well...close enough to perfect!). I think I need to do some research on the problems with square screens, then I'll decide on whether to wait for the T830, or just get another Uni.
Thanks though, I do at least know that I haven't forgotten anything. You wait, when they start releasing Ultraportable PC's with built in 3G and voice capabilities, I'm really going to struggle...!
What about:
Advance TC M.A.G.I.C.?
How about a list of what you REALLY want to be there (at least)
All I want is a PPC with:
-AKU2 (for Push-Mail and A2DP)
-3G and WiFi (for decent connection speeds)
The most important NON-essential features are:
-Keyboard
-QVGA screen (or better)
-GPS
Obviously, I'd appreciate anything over and above that, so the more bolt-ons the better. And yes, something that I have a chance of buying in the UK within the next couple of months would be good.
I realise that limits me to roughly one device that's currently available, but the T830 is on it's way, the Hermes is possibly on it's way, Shame the Trinity will take about a million years to surface (if ever).

bye bye tytn

im on my 3rd one and it blacks out and the screen doesnt reposition properly this time. 1st two had the SA problem.
such a good phone, but i cant take its bugginess anymore!
gonna get an E70 or E50!
i agree 100%
i am on my second one and just cant stand the bugs
i am thinking of getting the artemis....the one with the GPS
i love the little ball thing it's just amazing.....
just dont know..
i am definately gona miss the keyboard on the tytn
nut anyway no point in looking back anymore
You'll be sorry
I had a Nokia E61 before the tytn. In fact I had three (replaced under warranty). Whilst Tytn has it's problems, the architecure is open and great forums like this one assist you in overcoming the problems. By contrast the Nokia software has it's bugs too (lot's). The problem is that the architecture is closed and you are totally at the mercy of Nokia who provide terrible service. In the 4 months I owned the E61 I only had it in my poossession for 1.5 months. The rest of the time it was at Nokia.
In the end I took it up with the carrier and had them give me a tytn as a replacement. To rub salt into the wound after the carrier had supplied the TYTN, Nokia called to say do you have a problem? gee we are sorry, perhaps we should have upgraded the level of your problem yada yada yada
Two of the happiest days I had last year was the day I received my new Nokia and the day I got rid of it.
if anyone wants to donate their tytn or sell it really really cheap let me know
I am open to offers...i've got the t-mobile variant...pm me
for what it's worth, I had to get 3 replacements for my orange uk m3100 in the 1st month but since I got this last one a couple of months ago, it works like a dream, i love it to bits. If at first you don't succeed . . . !
Hi there,
I have an HTC644 now (Vario II) which i got after replacing an HTC645 (touchscreen stopped responding after a while) and to be honest with you...
thats the best device I ever had, it works just fine for me. That includes every single option in the phone ( yay i'm not using outlook )
Of course it is not perfect (it could include some more "phone'ish" features), yet that's what this forum is about!
Too many people come around wining about their problems, and some people take their issues as a device review ...
If everyone in the world had a device like that - there would be no wars ! HOOAH!
I'm not gonna waste my time and wait for two weeks til i can get a 4th one. imagine having to deal with this mess everytime you use it...

its meant to be my inbox, but the screens sorta split in half, and the lowhalf isnt getting rid of messages/warnings/menus that have previously been up
theres no denying the tytn is a smashing phone, coz it is. Just that i cant take it anymore. each handset takes at least 10days to get repaired or replaced. I've been without it for a month in total. i'm not paying good money for a phone i hardly see and keeps letting me down when i do see it.
I've not had a series 60 before. but the nokias ive have had before have been reliable. I'm prepared to give it ago, cant be worse than the problems im having, where the screens no use, therefore making the phone irritating to use. at least with the nokia the screen isnt touch sensitive, so less likely to go crazy on me.
three strikes and youre out.

I have had a Dopod 818 Pro for 3 years now and would like to make the switch to another phone. I might want to switch the a Kraiser, but Rogers is offering this phone for $350.
For hw6955 owners, since there is no upgrade future for this phone, plus other issues...would you have bought this phone again?
I think this one is a great device. U should buy it IF you can stand to wait forlonger process time. It lag a lot.
i have one new locked to rogers will sell it for $500
then if you see a better phone and want to upgrade sell this one and get upgrade
It lags a lot?! That's not good! with 416MHz I thought it would have been really snappy.
This is my recommendation on the HP 6900 series. I've been using the phone for almost four months now and I have been very happy with its performance. Compared to a Treo 650 (my previous phone), this device has been very stable and reliable. I have tried installing numerous applications and I practically never experienced problems with it. Being able to use skype on this phone has likewise been an awesome feature. Also, you can do numerous tweaks to further improve its performance.
The complains I have though are as follows:
-The qwerty keyboard is clunky
-Battery life will not last you more than 10 hours after just a few minutes of wifi use combined with several phone calls. My solution to this, I bought an extended battery from Amazon.
I hope these helps...
Alvin
Thanks for the comments, Rogers offered me a free HTC 621, so I'm going to take it
Awsome PDA
I went from the i-mate JASJAR to the iPAQ hw6955.
The hw6955 is an awsome device if you know how to use it properley.
It does not lag, unless you install all your programs into the main internal memory.
Solution: install programs on a mini SD card and reserve the internal program memory.
Battery usage: crap if you use it constantly, better get an extended battery.
Standard battery power is 1200mAH.
Better off getting the extended battery which is 1800mAH
I wonder where to buy the battery? Is it original?

As for your original question, I for myself can not find justification to pay more for the "new" devices
I like the 6900 it has almost everything, the most stable device you can find and it has good quality of hardware
as for 3G communication take my word for it that you will find a lot more converge of unsecured WIFI network then you will find good 3G network
(I'm talking worldwide)
As for WIFI communication = mainly free
3G = most chances a lot of money

agree with you, the 6900 device has it all... if the new 914 would be a VGA 480x480 scree, that would get my attention, but now, i dont think so.. will wait 1 year and see what they put out then

Can someone explain this? Fake/ Knock off G1?

Hi everyone, I am new to the t mobile community and I was looking on good ol ebay for a G1 without a contract. At that point my search threw back this in the query. I was quick to call b.s and all that so ofcourse i didn't buy it, but I just want to ask you all what in the hell is this. Has anyone out there bought it or had any experience with this?

Just some cheap "iClone" phones from China. Check your local craigslist- people cant seem to get rid of them fast enough once they get duped into buying them
Alright, In the first link the bid has ended so i cannot help you there. NOW In the second, It's a piece of hardware that may be fake, For Example, My cousin bought a phone like that about 2 months back from ofcourse good ol' Ebay, And what was it, A Japanese phone that looked just like the Iphone, It streamed TV had an antenna for when we made the switch on cable and antennas would be dead. It had like an 8 megapixel camera, Beautiful sweet deal for a smackin' $200 bucks. SO he went ahead and bought it. When it arrived it was the phone, or more exact the model, Which weight no more than a stack of papers, It didnt turn on, NOTHING. He decided to use a flathead screw driver to open it up, and what he found was that the phone had nothing inside, Literally, Nothing but sand, To make the phone weigh. So from me to you. Don't buy it. Skip it. Go to T-mobile and get the G1. lol But that was just 1 experience never know.
damn what a shame. Hopefully the people who are winning these ebay auctions don't get a box of sand shipped to them as well. I just did some reseach on meizu, they seem to be the company that is producing this stuff. Maybe its good enough for china, but I sure as hell am not taking a chance with it.
Those phones are real (not sure about the eBay one, but Deal Extreme and others sell the iClones) but they are very low quality. They also sell a ton of Nokia clones.

Those phone don't even look like the G1. DA.
Lol... that second one has got SIX speakers!! Must be goood... hehe
Haha
I bought one of these a couple mounths ago they are useless without the stylus and no where near as good as any phone made recently but if all you got is 150 and u need it unlocked then this pos is for you lol...
Edit: this thing does internet movies music and my favorite was the web cam mine had it does a few things but it doesn't do any all that good
These phones do have uses. A lot of these Chinese knock-offs are bought by people needing unlocked phones and multi-SIM capability. In Europe, for example, there are many more carriers over much shorter distances than in the US. Also, the practice (law?) there is caller-pays-all. Incoming calls don't cost anything. Outgoing calls cost your rate plus the rate of the person you're calling, making having multiple SIM cards for different countries more economical. Many of these phones have gimmick features like TV reception, but all come with clunky, proprietary operating systems. Finding good, useful applications will be a constant source of frustration for someone looking for a way to complement his 10mm CZ "diamond" stud in his ear.

Replacement for QTek 9000 - Nexus One or Motorola Milestone?

Hello,
I'd like to replace my QTek 9000. Which of these two phones would you choose?
- Nexus One
. Motorola Milestone
Also, what are the advantages and disadvantages to buy them through a contract, rather than unlocked?
Thank you
Go for device with qwerty keyboard, from this two this is Motorola Milestone
I decided to stay with trusty HTC and got Rhodium, I´m quite happy with it
..
i wouldnt upgrade! =D!
however, id say a HD2 is nicer than both of them. Android is all web-based ****, it's horrible without data. and i believe an OS should be self contained, not dependant on the internet for every function. even calendar doesnt work without data on android.
I could think on this as a better candidate to replace Uni than milestone

I went to the dark side* (well, no, I am lying, it's not really) and.... got Xperia X1.... IN ADDITION to my Uni and LG Prada. Must say, I am quite pleased. With my choice.
Played with X10 today - lovely, but just not lovely enough to make me WANT! madly.
* I bet you all thought I got an Iphone! Hahaha
My chain of collected and kept WM devices: O2 XPHONE IIm, Imate Jam (Magician), K-Jam (Wizard), SP Jas (Breeze), JasJar (Universal), Touch (Elf - still think it was the cutest little phone I ever had), LG KS20 (got TF3D ported and thought I can die a happy girl) and SE Xperia X1
All others I fixed for other people, played with and gave them back in exchange for money I also have TYTNII waiting for holidays when I will finally get to fixing it.

I´m quite satisfied with Rhodium but will like a bigger screen and faster processor, that would be the perfect upgrade!
