Since there seems to be some problems with TCPMP on the tytn, and I'm new to the pda phone business and don't want to mess around too much with my new phone just yet, I've decided to stick with windows media player for now when it comes to video.
So I've been trying movie maker and windows media encoder and some other software to convert some sitcom episodes into 320x240 wmv format just to try out the playback on the tytn, but the video has so far turned out a little bit choppy on the tytn in all my attempts, like every few seconds the image stutters a bit.
Is this just the the way it should be or is it possible to get totally smooth video playback with wmp on the tytn?
If anyone has any tips to share on how to encode video for the tytn for the best result, what software and settings to use etc, it would be greatly appreciated.
media player tends to suck especially with videos on all WM units it seems. there is pocket encoder that you can use (type it in google, sorry don't have the exact name) Lathe came up with a paid version of it, but it isn't as reliable as the free one (yeah i got suckered in to shelling out the $8 for it for no reason)

I have bought 3 generations of past HTC based XDAs including the Wallaby, Andes and Universal.
Primarily I need a phone and a PDA in a single unit with the promise of also using it as a media player in situations where I'm without my laptop or subnote.
The fastest media player that I have used always seemed to be the TCPMP player but this was too slow to play conventional DIVX .avi or other FULL SIZE movie streams.
I dont have the time to constantly convert movies from standard 700 MB .avi format to PPC pixel size. But the Universal was simply NOT fast enough to play the uncoverted movies. (Plus the Universal has some issues when it comes to slooowly receiving and making calls .. another story)
As a standby measure I use a Fujistu Loox N560 (and Nokia 7380 combo), with a 624Mhz Xscale processor. Wiith TCPMP IT IS fast enough to play movies on its VGA screen without really any noticable skipping.
This was a temporary measure until HTC could produce a phone PDA combo that I could again use as a do-it-all device.
BUT after much monitoring xda-developers I conclude that the HTC advantage with all its other features will not do this job. I really really wanted the Advantage to work for me but post after post have indicated that it just cant cut it for displaying videos.
How difficult can it be to produce a device and software that can do this! Like I say, I dont want to spend all my waking hours converting .avi files from one format to each other, just to play the regular 700MB / 2hour standard .divx file.
The x7500 is a phone and a PDA, not a video player. Yes, it can play Videos and movies, but they need to be converted as you already stated.
So if you want to watch videos in their native format, why would you think a phone would work as a video player.
Why not just go buy a mini-video player...And if you already knew the answer and you don't want to convert to a format that can be played on a PDA......
Why did you waste our and your time explaining the obvious!
I don't think it's unreasonable to expect that the HTC Athena, with it's dedicated ATI graphics chip, might have a chance to play the same videos he's able to play on the Loox (another PPC device that uses the same 624Mhz Xscale processor).
Hopefully either the CoreCodec folks will be able to work around the buggy ATI drivers driving the Athena, or we won't have to wait long until someone releases a device with better a dedicated GPU.
i see ur point...i have converted many videos and most took no more than 15-20 mins max. but thats due to my core 2x duo processor.hopefully we see some software upgrades to solve this.
mmh,... I do not really see the point you mentioned.
The TCPMP is not able to use the Ati drivers but with the RawFramebuffer and DIVX (XVID) converted movies it runs brilliant.
I also convert DVDs to approx. 600 video and 128 audio @ res of 640x480. with this I will come up
with about 500-600 MB per movie. Excellent quality and no lags...
And what is your exact problem with converting.... Du you want to
but a DVD content auf 4GB on your MD ? uncoverted movies on a mobile
device makes no sense... or didnt I get the point here ?
Definitly I can not confirm your statement mentioned. Also standard divx movies at 700MB CD size will run like a charm.
But now some experience from my side:
I used the SPB Mobile DVD to convert files directly from DVD... a big mess... audio/video goes out of sync and if paused the whole movie
become laggy. 5-10FPS .... I was searching the Inet and also XDA Devs for this problem...
At the end I had to find out the SPB Mobile DVD converting program is SH** !!!!
Now I use Pocket-DVD Studio... converting with the newest XVID drivers. Excellent performance as mentined before...
So maybe this is your problem... give try to another converter and see what happens. (Use one with not installed codecs... use one where you can make
setting and use the system installed codecs)
So from my side: The Athena is a good mobile movie player (with TCPMP)... my opinion

I must say that this is a bit confusing to me. I use the ATI driver on my Ameo (advantage) with TCMP as long as you dont use the hardware acceleration it works perfectly. There are many threads regarding this subject.
All in all, any 700-800 MB movie that I err......come accross and copy directly to my Ameo plays perfectly for me. Xvid or Divx.....
I dont do any conversions or anything. I just download and play.
Maybe I get the odd frame skipped here and there but its not an issue for me. I watch many action films...no problemo.......all standard 700 mb+ Avi files....I have Simpsons amd Resi Evil extinction on my Microdrive now...both 700MB plus..

Lol maybe I am just not fussy and this is a nuisance to everyone else. I have not found an AVI that I have been unable to watch yet....
Then again, I used to watch 160 X 120 movies on my HTC Voyager using Pocket DIVX encoder which really really sucked and I thought it was cool.
I can also confirm that no convertion is needed, I have a lot of convertions which are over 2gigs, I watch these on my pc, but have watched them on my Ameo.

i play "regular" 700 mb avi file on my uni without any lag.

dude what are u smoking video on the advantage is freaking sweeet. plus if u install projet athena 3 on it, the thing is a marvel of design and technology. they guys that made project athena put so much into it. infact i dont even need to use my hardware keyboard anymore. the teksoft keyboard works even better than the hardware one. but i digress, the tcpmp that is includded on the project athena uses the ati graphic card. i have never seen better video even better than the psp. no need to convert. i use full videos no conversion at all.
ok well im slowly getting to grips with my touch, now obviously it comes with windows media player, i have also installed core player.
on my pc i have total video convertor and pocket divx convertor. which program should i be using to convert various avi's that i have to get the best quality, what format should i be converting into, and what program should i be using on my touch to watch them, iv had a few attempts and everything i convert seems to come out rather jumpy etc and just not good to watch.

Please use the search function or atleast google. This has been addressed many times over. In fact, it's been discussed so much that several great xda members have even made various programs/applications which will convert whatever input to an output which performs best on the HD. Most of these are in the Applications part of the Blackstone forum.
In a nutshell, the built in TF3D player is the best way to go since it's the only player which uses hardware acceleration and will give best results when playing mp4.

The Touch HD has its own player and the quality of these 2 apps together is superb. If you put the converted films on to your sd card in a folder called films or what ever you want then start/programs/album/albums/storage card/films then select to play or add albums to your programs short cut.
Quality when watching is like half hd
use Duttys ROM with coreplayer i can play pretty much anything i want without jumping, dont get me wrong the converting programs on here are very good but why convert if you dont have too!
hi folks.. i have an O2 XDA Orbit 2, and the video playback sucks. I know about the HTC video driver "issue", and i've tried numerous players nd formats, but still get lag or synch problems with playback. At the moment i use windows media and divx player, but i wondered if any of you clever people had discovered the best conversion settings? I use pocket dvd studi /pqdvd to convert divx movies for my pda, with limited success.
Any ideas, or o i just accept my fone aint powerful enough to play video and buy something else?

try coreplayer with qtv enabled. This has the best playback. Oh and it also depends on the video settings of the ROM.
You could also search for gfx boost in these forums, that might help.
I've been using the TD2 for almost a week now. Really really happy with it,but I haven't tested any videos yet,though it was one of my major priorities behind buying this phone. Actually I am bit concerned after some reviews of the phone by some websites,they stated the Video playback is not up to the mark(Like-Skipped frames,Sound cracking etc.). If this is true then the large 3.2' screen will make no sense and I would be very SAD. So please vote and input your comments.
BTW-By Video I mean AVI files(either .xvid or .divx encoded) for PC playback(VGA or above quality),please don't say anything about .mp4,3gp and Conversion of videos. Maybe CorePlayer is the option,I don't have it as it's not free.

IME the device on its own barely plays any video formats and doesn't even play them so well. I bought CorePlayer and it plays most things and quite well too. Sometimes you just have to pay for stuff. Shame the UI is a bit ropey though.
convert the video first to smaller resolution..it will be better..and yes coreplayer is my favourite player too..
Without saying anything about certain formats we've been asked not to mention , I have converted some films (they had to be converted, they were DVDs to start with!) and have got to a place where I'm happy, extremely, very slight lip-sync issue, but watchable, and on the 3.2 screen they look great, no issues with Video, just need to get the Audio-Video sync sorted.
BTW-Haven't used an existing files, converted films specifically for TD2 (the ones converted for my XDA Orbit were a bit on the small size due to the screen size.
PS Only use HTC Album to view, WMP doesn't seem to want to play anything I give to it.
I have excellent quality with PocketDivxEncoder to make my movie smaller.
On my TD2/Topaz i use CorePlayer because it's WideScreen.
TCPMP won't run on my phone and WMP doesn't have the codecs.
Ok,so I got one thing-A conversion is a must for higher qualities. But I will not see high qualities/resolution on my TD2,I'll rather choose my 22" HD Dell monitor for that,but I thought I atleast can watch the DVD rips(the popular xvid encoded <=700mb)on my TD2 by Core player or else when I am on the go..haven't had a clear idea about it..anyways thnx for voting.

I'm guessing you are looking for a bit more clear answer, so I will try to give you one. The answer is - YES, you can easily watch DVD rips WITHOUT any conversion, on the go, by Coreplayer of course To me personally, any conversion at all is a misunderstanding. Sure, a phone isnt a PC, but if I pay so much for it, I demand that it can handle unconverted videos. And Topaz really does that very well As an example, I can tell you that I watch a lot of my favourite TV shows and series on the go without any compression, I just download my show (which has a resolution practially the same as DVD) and put it on my SD card. As far as You do not want to watch videos with more than 700x... resolution, you dont even have to convert anything. All in all, I'm very satisfied with my Topaz's video playback capabilities
oh and to be even more clear - all <=700MB xvid encoded movies running superb smoothly, WITHOUT any compression

Just to be clear, the ripped DVD can't just be a standard file, it has to have been converted first, even if that conversion keeps the resolution and size intact, even Coreplayer can't play vob files.
Coreplayer also doesn't support AC3 audio which is a huge limitation and disappointment This means that any video files with DD are no go.
watched the pilot of Caprica. The file was downloaded for PC viewing. was a Xvid encoded .avi file resoloution 624 x 352 and encoded with 23 fps with a data rate of 133 Kbps (It says 133kbps for audio as well, so I assume that is the total ofr both streams).

I copied a .xvid encoded .avi music video file(71mb),24fps,640*352 from my Desktop Pc to the TD2,played it with the CorePlayer 1.30(6213) and the result was TERRIBLE. It just didn't play anything at all. The sound was there but the video lagged all the way. So,what to do now? Huh,I decied that's it,as my major priority was watching video without any conversion has failed and failed so badly,so I am selling it. But except all this I liked it.

I think 1.3.2 build 6909 is the current release so maybe the version you are using is a bit old. It should play xVid avis no problem at that resolution. You could alos try the free TCMP from which coreplayer was derived. http://picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/test/

What was the data rate? My version of Core is older (1.25) and the same res file flew for me. It was a 700MB file for 90 odd minutes of video.
I tried two videos(music),here are the detail:
The First one,(a Taylor Swift video),72mb
The details from my PC- Time-4 mins 37 secs,Resolution 640*352,Audio format-Lame MP3,Audio Bit rate-192kbps and Video Frame rate-23fps/sec, Video Date rate-2099kbps, Video Sample size-24bits, Video compression-FFDS
Now when I tried to play that by Core Player 1.30 on my TD2,it didn't run at all,
Now the details of the Video by Core Player-
Video- AVC aka H.264,Codec-Core AVC and I played it for first 30 seconds and it played 67 frames and Dropped 985 frames,the rate was 1.527
Now the second music video,98.6mb
Resolution-512*384,Runtime-18 mins 57 seconds, Frame rate-23fps/sec,Data rate-710kbps,Video sample size-24bits,Video compression-XVID
Now Core player played this video well,very well infact,the Details by Core player,
Video-MPEG4,Codec-Core ASP,I watched it for first 6 mins and it played 744 frames and dropped 7,Played FPS-23.88

I'm guessing that You copied your file to the memory card. If so, did You install SDTuneUp drivers? It looks like they are a must have.
Sir,I don't know what is SD tune up driver and where to install from. BTW-I don't have a memory card on my TD2,it didn't come out of the box and so lazy to buy a seperate one.

I know it has been mentioned before but converting using he HTC Touch HD ‘Encoder’ program works well using HTC Album playback on my stock ROM TD2 playing back from the SD Card.
I understand that some of you are resistant to converting files and do not want to go this route but I thought it might help some of those reading this thread that smooth HQ playback from the SD card is absolutely possible without paying any money if you spend the time converting files on a PC (or Mac).
