Any issues with reading eBooks on XDA Mini? - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

Hi
I am considering the XDA Mini and would like to know if anyone has problem reading text on the mini, especially with eBooks?
I was playing with a display set and I noticed that general readibility is improved when I select cleartype on. However, I must selet the font size slightly bigger so as to be able to have a comfortable read.
Anyone has any screen shots with Microsoft's eBook Reader or has anyone experience difficulty in reading? :?
thanks!

ain't got no MDAc yet.
but i did a lot of ebook reading on a sonyericsson p900, which has a screen that's roughly the same height, but has 32 less pixels in width. and i had no problems with that.
so i expect to be able to read without any troubles on the MDAc that i'll hopefully soon have, once i figure out how to get a t-mobile MDAc and unlock it so i can use it with another operator.
(first post, hello everybody!)

I read ebooks on my I-Mate Jam every day with Palmreader, works fine, only problem I have, is in the dark the screen is to bright, even at the minimum brightness setting, I then use the theme setting 'inverse' and then it's OK

Sure, go to ereader.com, they have a version for Palm, PocketPC, Windows and Mac. Their DRM is much better then MS's, you just have to enter your Credit Card Number to unlock your book, so you can read your ebooks on all the devices you (will) own, without activating it at MS

The O2 Mini doesn't come with Microsoft Reader installed I see. How do I real .lit files now?

Go to www.microsoft.com and download the latest version of reader for pocket pc. Heres the link.

Thank you much

what is it like then?

As some of you have had the exec delivered whats your verdict?
I have the 11s and i am considering upgrading.
The 11s is about as bulkly as i would want to go and i know the exec is slightly larger and heavier but until you have it in your hand you cant really tell.
The 11s has a anoyingly quit ring tones and the vibrate is not much better.
So please post your thiughts.

oops
meant this for the existing thread sorry
Why don't you delete it then?
Btw..
Roman numerals uses the letter "I", not the number "1"..
It's "IIs" not "11s"..
how
dont know how to delete it
if i did i would have
remember we all start somewhere thats how the whole thing works if it was only for smart asses then it would not be required

I just upgraded to an XDA Exec from a IIs and I love it. Sure it is buliker than the IIs, which was big enoguh with a decent case, but the extra things you can do with it more than make up for it. The VGA screen is crystal clear, the stereo speakers and proper headphne socket, video calling, 3g internet browsing, proper keyboard... There are quite a few people here who think it is a disappointment, and yes, there are a few bugs and niggles, but overall I am really pleased with mine.

I got mine last week and its well cool. what a nice bit of kit. I'm finding it more easy to use than my xda2s, I've even been using pocket putty at work doin admin network stuff (just showing off), its like a second screen! lol. I'm even on it now replyin! I couldn't go back!
well I've had my say
I give it 10/10.
Out of interest, what is Pocket Putty? Just googled it and was none the wiser as to what it does! Sorry for my ignorance!

100% agree. In a few years many companies will build devices like this.
Why did we have to wait so long for WMdevices with a keyboard?

It looks great not as large as i thought either.

converting apps to VGA using res2exe

Ok, I have an obsession to get a VGA resolution web browser right now on my MDA PRO. The only thing I came up is using an MS developer tool called res2exe and using with existing Internet explorer or Opera. I have seen a post where the user has I guess recompiled the opera broweser with res2exe, however to do this you need Visual studio.net and the Windows mobile SDK.
would anyone be able to give me a hand on how to do this in plain english? Alternatively would anyone be able to post the recompiled exe ?
I dont think I can rest until I get a VGA browser !
Cmon guys this must be on the top of everyones list?
p.s the best thing MDA owners can do is flash with the IMATE ROM, the T Mobile ROM is the biggest pile of cack and the UI customisation is awful.

I hope so... I'm dying to get one working myself. They just recently released a new version of Minimo and it has full VGA support, but it's painfully slow on my Jasjar... looks beautiful, though.
I spent some time trying to get Pocket IE to run in VGA mode, but the problem is that it technically *does* run in VGA mode... the fonts and larger graphics are displayed in VGA. For some completely stupid reason though, it quadruples the size of smaller graphics... this prevents web sites from displaying properly and keeps us from getting as much as we want on the screen at once.
The Opera for smartphones that some people have gotten working doesn't interest me at all because it doesn't support the touchscreen. I'd rather browse in non-vga mode than loose the touchscreen.
Right now, most of the time I just deal with Pocket IE as is. If I need to do a lot of browsing I'll use the registry hack to enable VGA mode on my Jasjar and use Pocket IE that way... which does support VGA mode the way it should. Unfortunately it requires a soft reset to get into VGA mode and a soft reset to get out of it, plus there are problems with a lot of other programs when the device is in VGA mode, so it's not a pretty solution.

Couldn't agree more - I was stunned when browsing didn't feel any better than my XDA, and it took a bit of time to understand what was going on. I really don't understand why Opera is not doing an WM5 version. I've got my money ready to pay the SECOND someone comes up with a VGA browser for us.
which vga hack?
Brett, I agree with your comments. Can someone point me in the right direction of the jasjar VGA hack ? these seems to be a number of them.
I am sure this has been covered, but the annoying size of the friggin soft buttons bar/menu bar at the bottom of the screen is such a waste of our new found screen real estate. the bar could be smaller. or at least should be able to hide. ......this is not a fair comprmise between screen estate and menu navigation.

Any of the ones for WM2003 (SEVGA, OZVGA, or simply editing the registry) work to get the Jasjar into VGA mode. The problem is that as of right now, no one has figured how to get WM5 to display icons correctly in VGA mode. You lose all of the symbols at the top of the screen that show signal strength and connection status and such, and the icons displayed on the today screen and in Programs don't actually apply to the programs that they're associated with. Some programs (such as contacts and calculator) simply refuse to run in VGA mode, so it's not something that works as a full time solution. However, Pocket IE does run in VGA mode, and when it's in VGA mode it doesn't do any of the horrible image stretching that it does in 'normal' mode. That's why I go back and forth ocassionally. There's another thread here that was started by Rilot that talks about this a bit more.

Thanks for the Rilot link - I'll track it down now. I tried ozVGA and my screen wouldn't respond to any taps.

Screen Brightness

When I open the camera application on my I-mate JAM/HTC Magician, the screen goes bright for a second when the camera app. is about to open but it goes back to slightly dull after i close the camera.
I have maximum brightness in the settings.
Is there anyway to make the screen stay bright just like the second before the camera opens?
There are at least a couple of ways to do this.
One is VJLumos, which I don't recommend.
Another is VJLumos II - which is being released in a few days.
V
Thank you! Awaiting the release of VJLumos 2. How soon do you reckon you'll release it?
Magician version is done, and works great. Just tweaking the Universal version (which also works, but needs a little refining). Release hopefully around this weekend or so.
I don't have a wizard so can't support it for now, unfortunately.
Implementation is cool now, automatic superbrite every time you switch on, and no more risk of a hard reset  I was showing Mrs Vijay555 yesterday. She wasn't impressed I'm so misunderstood...
V
oh lol sigh. I had a look at your site...people should praise your talent more often
Anyway, why don't you share the Magician one now
I thought I had it on my ftp but I don't, so give me a while and I'll send you over a beta, if I remember. If you don't get by tomorrow, PM me.
V
Ok then...i'll be waiting. Thanks!
hi all
i'm very interested to by this soft. I was looking for this since 1 year so it's very nice you done it.
waiting for that to
thanks
Announcement!
Hi,
I've been investigating in the brightness hack and could finally track down what's necessary to enable it. This is the real way to enable it, which means no unneccessary DLLs are loaded and you're no chance of risking a soft reset because of this. The other advantage is that if you have your camera hardware removed this hack still works - on a Magician at least. I hope I can try this hack on a Hermes next week (don't own one).
I'm almost done creating an app like VJLumos II. If it's ready I'll post it in this forum.
Cheers.
PS: I was experiencing a hard reset during my research... so I hope you can esteem what I immolated
Ok, here it is.
For the moment this is for Magician only! And even on them you run this at your own risk!
This app is very freaky - it has no (obvious) dependencies and therefore loads fast like hell. Although being already ruddy slim and thus perfect staying resident it doesn't. But it accepts four parameters which are as follows:
on --> enable SuperBrightness
off --> disable SuperBrightness
install --> install a OnWakeUp event
remove --> remove event
Again: this app does not load anything (and consume memory) nor does it expose you to risk a soft reset.
Nevertheless I still encouter the odd behaviour, that Magicians without the camera hardware do not get superbright on WakeUp.
ahh vjays555 worked for me..
might prove usefull when im using my magician as a GPS..
oh btw, i tried chatty's program first and all i downloaded was 'attatchment. php'

No problems here - got a zip with one exe and 4 lnk's as it was supposed to.
Some news about our backlight:
Well, above a certain a minimum level brightness can be controlled continously from dark to (super-)bright. Keypad light can be controlled independently, but on/off only. Another news: absolute minimum is still a little darker than official (Control Panel) minimum. So if you're in for a little book reading under your blanket this could safe your eyes a little more. So currently I'm thinking of a new cmdline app which offers you to set brightness in all possible levels (super-dark to super-bright).
I dunno when I'll find the time for it, but is anyone interested at all?
pick me!
heheh, i use msn messenger and type up notes in the dark, it strains the eyes. Sometimes i watch movies on it in plain darkness.
Would be a cool utility to have. Dont know if anyone doese the same things i do, Since its so hard to sync for me through bluetooth.
Bring on the interest!.
Whitemoo.
I got a wicked idea: how about flashing a new brightness dll into the living device like it is done with the splash screen? The usual brightness control panel applet would then operate in the wider range and this hack would not eat up any memory.
Whohoo... exciting... lots of work to do, but interesting project.

How does your HTC Universal look? Post your ScreenShot here.

Here is mine:
This was taken in July but it works so well nothing has changed
I think I know the answer to this question, but what is that program with caller picture thumbnails you have?

Hey that looks so cool, what software do you use to get you desktop looking like that?
Nothin' Fancy
Kinda boring but it works for me
The first screen is for work, the second for play.
I usually switch both sims and desktops.
Note to self: I need to get a dual sim adaptor
New to making themes and struggling with VGA themes but this is my current screen. If anyone is better at this and cares to help me sort this out I'd be extreamly grateful!!!

LOL,
how do you make this great screen ???
That is SUPER !!!
I was just looking at the screenshot - January 2006! Sheesh. I haven't programmed anything specific for VJSihaya since then - reason being, when I had the idea way back when, I knew what I wanted it to do, but knew what I had to go away and learn LOTS of new stuff.
I've been tinkering with different ideas, bits and bobs, so that I can eventually throw them together to make it as complete as I want it to be.
Like I've said elsewhere, stuff like VJVolubilis is just R&D, that I've released stand alone, but I like the idea of VJSihaya. However, HTC really need to get more VGA screens out. I'm thinking of going to TyTN, and at QVGA VJSihaya isn't as beautiful

I think that is WisBar Advance he is using. It is not free though.
Yep thats Wisbar Advance I'm using along with a windows vista theme. The picture dialer is the one ripped off from the Treo 700W and was designed for QVGA and square screens thats why it looks so small on the Universal's VGA screen but it still works great
A couple of questions:
Does it not totally destroy your eyes trying to read the text on true VGA mode?
I used WisBar Advance once when I had my alpine - it made it so there was no ring when an incoming call happened, are there any problems with using it on a phone now? If not, do you know why not? Is it the new device or a newer version of the WisBar software?
Thanks guys, I'm off to investigate Wizbar Advance!
Anjow - to answer your question.
Yes the text is small in VGA mode - in Word set your font size to 7 point font size (perhaps 6 - hard to tell) and you'll get an idea of how big the text is.
I find it perfectly readable and LOVE the extra space it gives me, browsing the internet actually becomes worthwhile as well!
VJBigPhone makes the phone work properly on VGA (Thanks again!!!) - my only problem is that Solitaire still thinks it's using 320x240 and is too small!!!
It depends upon personal preference and what you intend to use the device for.

Hmm, perhaps tolerable then. I'm surprised because when I'm using pocket opera some of the text is really tiny already? Perhaps that's a feature of opera though.

Using RDP gives very small resolution

Hi,
On HD I've tried to use RDP and it works fine, however resolution is set to something very small.
Haven't be able to find any solution on the phone or google.
I want to see a larger resolution or I fear that I have to buy glasses or strap the damn thing to my head with a rubber band
What you say?

Hi Kim,
that's the problem with a high res but small screen
you don't say which windows type/version you are connecting to
but a fix is to increase the font and icon size on the windows system
If you can, it's probably best to create an extra user called something like bigme
log in locally and increase the size of the font and icons
It'll look a bit strange on your normal screen
then when ever you connect remotely it will be a lotmore readable

yep,
the Himalya is 240x320
the Blackstone is 480x800
so everything will be half the width and about half the height which works out as about a quarter sized, for a given screen.
Thanks again,
Your solution is, I'm afraid, only half-way good.
I've got sales people reporting sales in the daytime on himalayas and the night time logging on RDP from home for mail and other use.
It's gonna be a nightmare instructing sales people on screen changing every other time they log on.
I think my solution would be a mininote of some kind.
Thanks for your help anyway, I got my question answered
Kim
