[Q] Actual space on the Nexus 7? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wonder, the OS takes up space, but how much space? I pre ordered the 8 gig but if the OS takes more than a gig or so, I think I'm going to upgrade to the 16 gigs.
What do you guys think or if one of you have it, how much actual space doe sit have?
I searched for it and could not find anything.
Thank You In Advanced.

I think they said in some article that with the 8gb one, with the preloaded magazines and some apps, they had about 5.6gb left over. Hope this helps.

Wow, that doesn't leave us with much honestly... I think I have to switch it to the 16 gigs.

You also have to remember that they come preloaded with a movie which will take up a good deal of space

I just contacted google hopefully they will let me alter the order to 16gb, if it was just for data 8gb would be plenty for me but as its fixed after purchase for £40 extra it makes a bit of sense to chose the larger size
edit: just looked on my TF101 and Galaxy s2 and, on the tf101 I have 600mb of apps and on the S2 I have about 1gb of apps, so I could probably manage with the 8gb version I will decide what to do when google get back to me

I wonder if the movie is actually stored on the device or if it's kept in the cloud.

Micro USB
The Tech Specs says that the Nexus 7 memory is internal.
pdadb.net says that the Nexus 7 supports up to 32gb of memory.
I've read is several forum responses that the 16gb tablet has a micro SD card and that the 8gb one doesn't, but I've not been able to corroborate that on any of the official web sites.
I'm waiting to read a tear down report to see what is actually inside the Nexus 7 tablet. (Too much unsubstantiated information is being posted in the forums)

I haven't held a Nexus 7 yet, but of all the pictures, videos and reviews I've seen there has been no mention of a microSD slot included on the device. That seems like a far cry.

There is no sd card slot.

Yea everyone is complaining that there is no SD card slot, so I don't think there is one.

But if you think about it, everyone who got one at I/O has an 8gb version. Nobody actually owns a 16gb version yet. I know it probably isn't possible, but it would be cool if they added a little more hardware to the 16gb version to help justify the $50 price jump. Either way, it's the one I'm buying.

Monkeyluis,
How long is the battery life on your Wi-Drive? How many unique devices can it serve simultaneously?
The Wi-Drive came out (I think) after I bought a Seagate Satellite, or I might have bought the Wi-Drive instead. The pros of the Satellite is that it holds 500gb and can serve unique content simultaneously to about 5 users before it bogs down (with hacked firmware). The cons are that it's a lot bigger than the Wi-Drive appears to be and it's battery is only good for about 5 hours or so. With the lower price of the Wi-Drive, it looks really good -- particularly if it has something approaching 10 hours of battery life.

If you're streaming movies yes I think it could last 8-10 hrs. I have not used it for that long at once though. You can have up to 3 unique devices at once. The wi-drive is pretty small, light & thin. Easy to slip into a pocket or extra pocket in a bag.

But wouldn't it be better if they just put a micro sd slot on the bloody thing? 8gb is a joke, but an extra £40 / £50 for another 8gb is an insult!
I was interested / excited but I think I'll give this one a miss.

The reason why they did not add a SD card slot, at least to my belief, because it would make the tablet slower. It takes more processing power to go through the SD and what not then the local HD. That's why I think iPhones and what not are less laggy because it maximizes it's processors for its dedicated hard drive and it does not have to sift through the others which makes it a bit faster.

12Gb microSDHC vaporware?

I've seen release dated for this larger 12gb memory card fall back over and over ... and now no retail shops are offering a due date of when this memory is to be released.
Did anyone get their hands on a 12gb card?
Was the 12gb skipped over?
Now I see sandisk announcing the soon to be released 16gb next month (June). Are we going to see the same for the 16gb card?
It was always my understanding that SanDisk had made the 12GB card as a proof of concept that was never intended for retail sale -- just something to demo at trade shows until the 16GB cards were ready.

Way too funny. You can also hold songs, videos, movies, games, gps maps, programs, not to mention portable pc applications you can use via usb. Of course, you can have loads of porn to (ahem) keep you (and hapy go lucky bystanders, lol) focused until the train arrives. Make sure you have a spare a/c adapter as well. and perhaps the kaiser video driver or update will be a motivating factor to watch/play movies, videos, & games.

well it is 32, it probably old info
what idiot designed SDHC to only go to 32GB!? We ran into the space problem at 2GB and they thought of only extending it to 32!? We are going to be there VERY soon and wont be able to go over! Whats next? SDSHC (SD Super High Capacity)? I bet they will only extend that to 64GB.
Can't wait for 32Gb - will finally be able to keep all my music in there, synched with my iPod which spends most of its time in the car now.

"It uses the same form factor as SD, but the SD 2.0 standard in SDHC uses a different memory addressing method (sector addressing vs byte addressing), thus theoretically reaching a maximum capacity of up to 2048 GB [2 terabytes]. However the SD Card association have artificially defined the maximum limit of SDHC capacity to 32 GB. "

Samsung Doubles Speed of MicroSD Card for Smartphones

Im interesting in seeing the real world results of these new microSD cards, might just be out in time for me to buy one for my Epic.

That's actually pretty interesting. I might have to pick one up after they become commercially available. My 16gb class 10 is great, but a 32gb class 10 sounds WAY sexier haha

Our phones can go up to 32gb.
I really don't see what's new here. Class 10 microSDs (even 32GB ones) have been out for a while. I bought a 16GB one for my Epic near the end of last year.
Does anyone know what the hardware limitations of our phone's MicroSD slot is? Will we even get appreciable benefits from this?
Edit: I just ran a test on the stock 16GB card that comes with the phone and for 21.4MB/s read and 10.6MB/s write speed. Anyone tested different classes?
I was under the impression (probably wrongly but can find nothing on it) that the only reason 32GB is the largest supported size is simply because nothing exists larger than that right now. Is it probable that Android can support an unlimited size micro-card?
Not only has class 10 been out for awhile, but their "doubling of speed" claim is based on the minimum specs for class 4. Most good quality class 4 cards already exceeded this.
I was hoping they'd changed the code on the in-phone reader to allow for better throughput as its clearly worse than my dedicated SD reader.

Nope, 32GB is the largest that the SDHC addressing structure can handle. That's why they came out with SDXC.
SDXC cards can theoretically go to 2048GB.

Really? Havent heard that one yet but i really think i might settle for the 16gb xoom.
I REALLY LIKE THE THRIVE> chose it over the galaxy tab 10.1 cuz of the orts. It has the following FULL standard sized ports: HDMI, sd card [use adapter if using micro sd], and a USB port. standard 3mm headphone jack. Not going to lie, I have only had the sleep bug once, and had to hard reset it [hold power button]. But I love it. Its not that heavy [only @.3lbs heavier than galaxy tab], though a bit thicker [due tot he full ports] I really like the toshiba file manager, where you can see the internal, sd card, and usb memory all at once, the just tap between them to copy/move files. Also the removeable baery and cover also make it worth while.

Good look. Also, I'm on my thrive right now. I personally got the 32gb version. Only cuz I want the max storage availble. The hardware is the same across all version, so its not like the 32 has something over the 16, and it over the 8. So you could get the 8gb, get a 32gb sd card, then have 40gb of space...or use an external hard drve either way...its win-win-win.

The Xoom uses the SDHC standard and will never support SDXC. No, a firmware update will not change this fact.
Well, we always have the USB OTG cable option if we use up both the internal and external 32GB memory. The price of the card is just to high now anyway.

Do people not read??
If you actually took a blind bit of notice instead of just posting rubbish. The whole point of the tablet is to use cloud storage.
For me it's different. I always looked at 32gb and 64gb devices (phones or tablets) as a waste of cash. It's so easy to just delete/replace music or movies. I guess some people have so much music and videos to store in their devices. Why not just put 4-5 movies, 4-5 gb of music, a few games and apps.
I wouldn't like to pay 100$ more just to get an extra 16gb, when I can buy a 2tb external hard drive for the same price or a 500gb portable HDD.
You need more than 16 movies on the device at one time to enjoy it?
I understand cloud storage is supposed to be the greatest thing since Japan... but if your internet connection is not rock solid you get buffer bloat and an awful experience, I would prefer to have my music local in flac.
Incidentally I'm still not sure what a tablet is supposed to do... I mean why not just use a laptop, I love android but windows is so much more capable and justifies a case.
Can't really make use of cloud storage when sitting on long car trips, and tethering 3G to watch a 3-4GB movie is far from ideal. Cloud storage is in its infancy with the bandwidth restrictions we have, not quite ready yet.

Actually don't make your decision based on the SD storage (again its not an issue for some). Have a look at the defects threads, quality of the product and manufacturing defects before you make the call. All these issues are reported from 2-3 weeks of usage.
Good luck.

If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand. Seriously. I used to make those same arguments. One doesn't replace the other. I carry an i7 notebook with 16 GB of RAM just about everywhere I go, at least have it in the truck, and I also take my tablet. If you ever get in the habit of using one or carrying one, it will make sense but it's hard to explain it to someone that hasn't gotten used to one. My other tablet is a 32 GB Transformer Prime, and I've never needed to use 16 GB. I use 25 or so GB but it's only because a lot of nandroid backups on there are old and I haven't gotten around to cleaning house that week on my internal storage. I go through about once a week or so and clear out about 10 GB or so of old nandroid backups.

Movie wise, if you officially buy them they will be in cloud storage requiring network connection and you also have the option to download them. If you load the mp4s onto your device it takes up space
Or do what I did and use a NAS server (I use a raspberry pi - for low electricity cost what with it being on all day/night - with samba client and 1TB external hard disk) at home and copy films and content you want for the day/week/month off of that. Can stream from it up to about 720p with no problems any higher requires a bit of buffering if I am in the house or even at another wifi spot (a bit more buffering required depending on connection).
As for portable storage I have installed about 21 games already including some like shadowgun, batman, NOVA 3 and Modern Combat 3 that take up a load of space and I still have 5GB left free on the Nexus. If you want more room then I hear Apple make a nice 32GB wi-fi only model for just £479...oh and that's not expandable either. Even if you go for the 16GB wifi only the money you save by buying the nexus 7 is enough to rent more than a film a week for the next year.
My plan is too use my USB OTG cable (that i ordered from amazon) for use of movies and the 16 Gb for apps

Only allow a total of 16gb of storage. Wth! This is actually keeping me from buying this badass device. Hell, before even installing any apps or music, you would only be able to put about 16 movies on it. This is just ignorant to me. I'm wanting this thing so bad but I know I wouldn't be able to enjoy it.

They want to push their cloud services and media through google play. How many movies do you need on there at once?
You could make the same argument about any tablet that doesnt have infinite storage.
"What's the point of a tablet that can't store every movie ever made in the contiguous 48 states!!?! Argh!"
If you think its a stupid product, don't buy it...but you don't have to come over here harshing on our buzz.
